Sharing data is now encouraged by major funding agencies, and many journals require it as a prerequisite for publication. While many of the hard science journals have implemented ‘Data Deposit Requirements’ and ‘Policies’, in the Library Science literature, publishers are beginning to move titles into open access journals, but data deposit requirements are just beginning to be addressed. Librarian authors will increasingly find themselves having to comply with data sharing policies. In this webinar, we look at examples from the Journal of the Medical Library Association and the Journal of eScience Librarianship and discuss best practices in data deposit.

An institutional repository (IR) is an online digital archive that organizes, preserves, and provides access to the educational, scholarly, and research output of an institution. Medical libraries began establishing IRs more than a decade ago and these repositories have become an important component of scholarly communication outreach. In an article in the 2014 Against the Grain health and biomedical sciences special issue, Palmer (Palmer 2014) described institutional repository services provided by health sciences libraries, and the barriers and challenges to providing those services. Objective: The paper provides a review of current practices related to evaluation support services reported by seven biomedical and research libraries.

Methods: A group of seven libraries from the United States and Canada described their experiences with establishing evaluation support services at their libraries. A questionnaire was distributed among the libraries to elicit information as to program development, service and staffing models, campus partnerships, training, products such as tools and reports, and resources used for evaluation support services. The libraries also reported interesting projects, lessons learned, and future plans.

One of the “purposeful pathways” in the UMass Medical School Lamar Soutter Library’s 2016-2020 strategic plan is to “responsibly preserve institutional investments in purchased and unique content” [1]. Upon completion of the strategic plan, the library began to investigate digital preservation services for its institutional repository on the Digital Commons platform, eScholarship@UMMS. Although content on bepress platforms is protected by a robust infrastructure that includes multiple backups and cloud storage with Amazon Glacier, the library was interested in an additional level of preservation and control, at a minimal cost. The goal of the SHARE initiative, a partnership between the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Center for Open Science (COS), is to build a “free, open, data set about research and scholarly activities across their life cycle.” As of October 12, 2016, 129 repositories and publishers have made metadata available to SHARE for harvesting, and the aggregated data set is available for searching. Many metadata providers are institutional repositories utilizing the bepress Digital Commons platform whose metadata is harvested through the OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) protocol for repository interoperability.

Objective: This poster presents a comparison of student and faculty responses to surveys on data management attitudes that were distributed during 2014. In the Spring, the Lamar Soutter Library distributed a survey to UMMS students on their attitudes toward and awareness of research data management best practices. Similarly, in the Fall and using the student instrument as a guide, the library surveyed UMMS faculty on their attitudes and practices around research data management. Results from the surveys set a baseline and identified needed resources and training opportunities on campus.

The early promise of institutional repositories is beginning to bear fruit. Medical libraries with institutional repositories, like other academic libraries, have found that their repositories support new ways of engaging with researchers and meeting the challenges posed by the transformation in scholarly communication over the past decade exemplified by open access, the National Institutes of Health Public Access Policy, campus-based publishing, and the sharing of research data. Institutional repositories can grow and thrive in academic health sciences libraries and be a vital component in the provision of library services to faculty, researchers, staff, and students.

This analysis explores specific institutional repository (IR) data management needs of the University’s biomedical sciences doctoral students. Awareness, intentions, attitudes, and concerns about depositing, sharing and publishing supplemental ETD (electronic thesis and dissertation) research data into the library’s institutional repository eScholarship@UMMS were explored.
