Due to the influence of different cultural contexts, the process of foreign terms entering the Chinese context is often accompanied by “variation”. The semantic evolution of “inspiration” in the translation process serves as a typical example. The Japanese transliteration of romaji (innsubiresyo) follows the translation of ancient Greek-Latin languages. While Liang Qichao's Chinese transliteration of the word implies a potential contradiction between “availability to all” and “unique genius”, it allows for a broad scope of reinterpretation within the Chinese context. The translation as Linggan gradually establishes a connection and transformation with categories such as “sensation” in traditional Chinese culture, while …

Evaluation Of Cone And Seed Quality Of Siberian Stone Pine (Pinus Sibirica Du Tour) For Plus-Tree Selection, Svetlana Velisevich, Alexander Popov
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Siberian stone pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour) is a cone-bearing species with outstanding nutritious seeds, health-supporting properties, and nut oil. Currently, the main volume of pine nuts is harvested in natural forests, which causes damage to ecosystems. The best solution to this problem would be harvesting nuts on special pine nut plantations established on the basis of high-seeding clones. However, it is hampered by the low efficiency of the existing methods for assessing plus-tree productivity. This work focused on cone analysis in two sites used for plus-tree selection: a 42-year-old sparse forest plantation and a 186-224-year-old closed natural forest. The …

Deaf Women’S Health Vocabulary: Challenges For Interpreters Working In A Language Of Limited Diffusion, George Major, Rachel Mckee
International Journal of Interpreter Education
Interpreters are aware that signed languages often do not have ‘established’ vocabulary for specialized topic domains, including topics that may occur regularly in situations that require interpreting. Healthcare is one such domain where interpreters are often challenged for equivalent signed language vocabulary or ways to communicate about the details of physical conditions, processes and treatments. Motivated by this practice reality, this study analyzed a corpus of deaf New Zealand Sign Language users’ accounts of women’s health-related experiences, to examine the language forms they used to communicate such topics. In this article, we present an analysis of how deaf women express …

Maximizing Use Of An Extension Beef Cattle Data Set: Part 1—Calving Distribution, Jennifer M. Ramsay, Lauren L. Hulsman, Kris A. Ringwall
The Journal of Extension
Previously, we created a 20-year data set, CHAPS20Y, from historical data generated by Cow Herd Appraisal Performance Software, a beef management program. In this article, we describe CHAPS20Y calving distributions, including yearly means and 20-year averages. Yearly mean calving distributions are consistent over the 20-year period, but yearly herd minimum and maximum values vary greatly. Herd-to-herd differences in nutrition, breed, environment, and management may explain this variation. We used CHAPS20Y as a tool for understanding calving distribution and increasing the Extension knowledge base. Extension professionals can use this knowledge to help beef producers set and achieve their herd management goals.

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Rice is one of the most important crop plants as well as a model organism used for genetic studies. Transposons, especially retrotransposons, have a significant impact on the rice genome. A considerable percentage of the rice genome is composed of transposons (about 35%). Thus, transposons are an important internal factor for the genome evolution of rice varieties. In this study, we performed fing?erprint analyses of 37 Oryza sativa L. Cultivars using an IRAP marker. For this purpose, we designed IRAP primers specific to Houba (Tos5/Osr13), RIRE1 and Hopi (Osr27), and Osr30 retrotransposons, the most abundant retrotransposons in the rice genome. …

Fish usually have a simple body shape and many morphological characters can be easily obtained by 2-dimensional image analysis. Measuring errors are often analyzed using data from several researchers or repeated measurements, but the testing of accuracy and repeatability based on different methods has rarely been examined. Here we report the comparison of manual measurements using Proma 150D digital calipers and computer-assisted image analysis in LUCIA software to evaluate the accuracy of both methods and the suitability of digital images for exploration of fish morphology. Eighteen morphometric characters of 20 specimens of Prussian carp were examined by 2 researchers. The …

Numeracy
This column draws on the approach of statistician J. Edwards Deming to analyze sources and consequences of variation in an education system. Educational systems are not immune from the effects of poor statistical control, which makes it difficult for teachers to teach effectively and for managers such as principals to improve on school performance. It is also argued that the need for statistical control in these areas is in tension, if not outright conflict, with our goals for educating students.
