Investigating Strategies For Delivering Change Through The Practice Of Co-Design With Communities In The Northern Ireland Context., Katrina Newell
IASDR Conference Series
The PhD research proposes that awareness of and exposure to co-design processes will support communities in Northern Ireland to frame and develop long term strategic goals. In doing so the research focuses on three areas: how the local context might affect a co-design process, the components necessary to create a space that nurtures co-creation for social transformation, and the relational facets within a community-based co-design process between the actors engaged. This research has emerged from the researcher’s experience of working in community development in Northern Ireland and a desire to better understand how we might collaboratively design with communities to …
How Risk Perceptions And Level Of Trust Of Information Influence Individuals’ Health Services Usage, Wan-Lin Chang
How Risk Perceptions And Level Of Trust Of Information Influence Individuals’ Health Services Usage, Wan-Lin Chang
Research Symposium
Background: When facing health-related issues, decision-making is not an easy thing. Some people look for advice from health care professionals, and some people trust their family members' and friends’ experiences more. Previous studies in health communication have suggested differences across various demographic groups in information seeking access and skills, including variables related to the knowledge gap assumption and individuals' risk perceptions.
Methods: Multiple linear regression and logistic regression are used to examine how individuals’ health risk perceptions influence their health service usage by analyzing the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) 5 Cycle 4. HINTS conducts national surveys to monitor …

Partnerships In Early Childhood Education: Engaging Families In Professional Conversations, Simone Griggs, Greta Rollo
2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences
Effective monitoring of learning and development involves integrating multiple perspectives from a child’s parents, carers, family, and their educators. A collaborative approach between educators and families not only recognises the family’s critical importance in their child’s life but it has also been shown to benefit children with learning difficulties, delays and behavioural concerns (Parenting Research Centre, 2012; Prior et al., 2011). Efforts made towards the integration of multiple perspectives can also support stronger inclusion of diverse families into communities of early childhood education and care. However, discussions with parents and carers about issues regarding their children’s development can be a …

The Role Of Trust In Argumentation, Catarina Dutilh Novaes
The Role Of Trust In Argumentation, Catarina Dutilh Novaes
OSSA Conference Archive
Abstract: Argumentation is important for sharing knowledge and information. Given that the receiver of an argument purportedly engages first and foremost with its content, one might expect trust to play a negligible epistemic role, as opposed to its crucial role in testimony. I argue on the contrary that trust plays a fundamental role in argumentative engagement. I present a realistic social epistemological account of argumentation inspired by social exchange theory. Here, argumentation is a form of epistemic exchange. I illustrate my argument with two real-life examples: vaccination hesitancy, and the undermining of the credibility of traditional sources of …

Cybersecurity And Osfa Architecture, Patrick Jungwirth, Abdel-Hameed Badawy
National Cyber Summit
In this paper, we will present an overview of the patented OS Friendly Microprocessor Architecture (OSFA) and introduce its cyber security features. We are interested in feedback from cyber security professionals, microprocessor developers, and operating system (OS) developers about the hardware computer security features in the OSFA. The OS Friendly Microprocessor Architecture is based on a cache bank memory pipeline. The cache banks and memory cells incorporate Unix-like file permission bits to create a hardware level computer security mechanism. A trusted OS and OSFA hardware system form a separation kernel. The trusted OS configures the security tags (access permission bits) …

Investigating Trust And Trust Recovery In Human-Robot Interactions, Abigail L. Thomson
Celebration of Learning
As artificial intelligence and robotics continue to advance and be used in increasingly different functions and situations, it is important to look at how these new technologies will be used. An important factor in how a new resource will be used is how much it is trusted. This experiment was conducted to examine people’s trust in a robotic assistant when completing a task, how mistakes affect this trust, and if the levels of trust exhibited with a robot assistant were significantly different than if the assistant were human. The task was to watch a computer simulation of the three-cup monte …
What's More Important: Design Or Content? An Analysis Of The Impact Of Website Design, Argument Quality, And Need For Cognition On Information Assessment, Luke David Salomone
What's More Important: Design Or Content? An Analysis Of The Impact Of Website Design, Argument Quality, And Need For Cognition On Information Assessment, Luke David Salomone
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Author Abstract:
When evaluating information online or offline, two important aspects are considered by readers: the credibility of the source and the quality of the argument. It is well known that strong arguments are more persuasive than weak arguments of the same length (Petty and Cacioppo, 1984), and recent research has shown that in an online environment source credibility is determined by the reader in part by the design aspects of website (Lowry et al., 2013). Using a 2 (website quality: good vs bad) x 2 (argument quality: strong vs weak) ANCOVA with need for cognition (NFC) and disposition to …

Residents’ Attitude Toward Future Tourism Development: The Application Of Trust, David Cardenas Phd, Fang Meng Phd, Simon Hudson Phd, Karen Thal
Travel and Tourism Research Association: Advancing Tourism Research Globally
Local residents remain peripheral players in tourism development planning, and exhibit little appreciation of potential impacts. Yet the long-term viability of sustainable initiatives depends on community members’ initial understanding, support and engagement in the planning process. Trust is a key construct that most scholars believe to be critical in gauging and understanding resident support for tourism development. However, limited tourism research has been conducted exploring the dimension of trust. The purpose of this study was to explore the construct of trust, and its antecedents, ability, benevolence, and integrity, in the context of a tourism development project.

Demonstrating Objectivity In Controversial Science Communication: A Case Study Of Gmo Scientist Kevin Folta, Jean Goodwin
Demonstrating Objectivity In Controversial Science Communication: A Case Study Of Gmo Scientist Kevin Folta, Jean Goodwin
OSSA Conference Archive
Scientists can find it difficult to be seen as objective within the chaos of a civic controversy. This paper gives a normative pragmatic account of the strategy one GMO scientist used to demonstrate his trustworthiness. Kevin Folta made his talk expensive by undertaking to answer all questions, and carried out this responsibility by acting as if every comment addressed to him—even the most hostile—was in fact a question in good faith. This presumption of audience good faith gave in turn his audience good reason to presume his good faith, and a situation of reciprocal distrust was transformed into one with …

Biases, Bumps, Nudges, Query Lists, And Zero Tolerance Policies, Sheldon Wein
OSSA Conference Archive
Zero tolerance policies are often mistakenly thought to be the best way to deal with pressing social problems. However, most arguments for zero tolerance policies are either based on inaccurate premises or they commit the zero tolerance fallacy. This paper explores ways that we might counteract the bias in favor of zero tolerance policies by adding a query list to the choice architecture.
Another Dimension To Deep Disagreements: Trust In Argumentation, Moira L. Kloster
Another Dimension To Deep Disagreements: Trust In Argumentation, Moira L. Kloster
OSSA Conference Archive
I will connect the literature on deep disagreements with the literature on trust to construct a two-dimensional picture of the limits of argument. Argumentation and trust are important to the functioning of society, but each sets different expectations for when arguments can and should be used to resolve disagreements. When trust is factored in, we see a more nuanced picture of which disagreements will remain too deep for objective argument. Affective and social aspects of argument are not independent of procedure and content.

When All Hope Is Gone, Trust Then Believe: “At Risk” Or “At Potential"?, Erica C. Pooler, Barbara Kirby-Bentley Dr.
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
The Cards of Life, when all hope is gone; trust then believe forces educators to view students differently. The notion that we can’t teach students until we truly begin to know them and they begin to trust us is challenged. The fact that our actions have to align with our words and meaningful conversations and relationships must be established in the classroom. At Risk or At Potential? Every school across the nation have students that struggle, academically, socially or behaviorally. There are a variety of reasons as to why? We can no longer ignore these students and pad the numbers …

Pistis - The Common Ethos?, Anne-Maren Andersen
OSSA Conference Archive
The classical Greek term pistis (trust) is presented as a relevant norm in the analysis of parliamentary debate. Through exploration of pistis apparent similarities to the term ethos have appeared. It is proposed that pistis can be viewed as the equivalent to ethos, concerning the common space or connection between the speaker and the audience. Tentatively "truth", "faith" and "respect" are proposed as the elements equivalent to phronesis, areté and eunoia.
The Virtue Of Restraint: Rebalancing Power In Arguments, Moira Kloster
The Virtue Of Restraint: Rebalancing Power In Arguments, Moira Kloster
OSSA Conference Archive
Is argument a game everyone should be able to play? If it is, current argument practices do not yet level the playing field enough for a fair game. We may build in subtle imbalances that work against people who cannot easily adapt to the most common patterns of argumentative interaction. We need better ways to build trust, to create safety, and adapt goals in order to bring everyone into the game.
Trust, Distrust, And Trustworthiness In Argumentation: Virtues And Fallacies, Suzanne Mcmurphy
Trust, Distrust, And Trustworthiness In Argumentation: Virtues And Fallacies, Suzanne Mcmurphy
OSSA Conference Archive
What is trust? How does it function as a primary virtue for persuasive arguments? How does its presumption contribute to the effectiveness of an argument’s persuasiveness? This presentation will explore these questions and the controversy among scholars regarding how trust is generated and under what conditions it is lost. We will also discuss whether inauthentic trustworthiness is a manipulation used for gaining a fallacious advantage in argumentation.
Different Gender-Based Roles On Cooperation: Integrating Differentiated Leader Member Exchanges, Communication, And Trust In Hotel Organizations, Seonjeong Lee
International CHRIE Conference-Refereed Track
This study aims to discover how the relationship between leader-members exchange (LMX) differentiation and cooperation can be moderated by the different gender-based roles. Different gender-based roles are investigated through communication, trust, and perceived fairness in this study. Specifically, this paper proposes that male employees/leaders will less care about (LMX) differentiation, due to their task-oriented characteristics, than female employees/leaders, who are more relationship-oriented. In addition, male employees/leaders are likely to develop cognition-based trust; whereas, female employees/leaders tend to build affective-based trust. Furthermore, this study predicts female employees/leaders represent more cooperation when they are involved with participation throughout the process.
Roles Of Brand Value Perception In The Development Of Brand Credibility And Brand Prestige, Chihyung Ok, Young Gin Choi, Seunghyup Seon Hyun
Roles Of Brand Value Perception In The Development Of Brand Credibility And Brand Prestige, Chihyung Ok, Young Gin Choi, Seunghyup Seon Hyun
International CHRIE Conference-Refereed Track
This study explores the functional roles of consumers’ perceived brand value on brand credibility and brand prestige and consequent positive effects on key brand relationship outcomes. The links were depicted in a conceptual model and empirically tested with structural equation modeling using 309 consumers in a coffeehouse setting. The results suggest that perceived utilitarian value shapes brand credibility, and perceived hedonic and social value enhance brand prestige. In turn, brand credibility and brand prestige had positive effects on brand trust. The effects of perceived social value on social image congruence and well-being were also confirmed. Suggestions are provided.
Accounting For The Force Of The Appeal To Authority, Jean Goodwin, Raymie Mckerrow
Accounting For The Force Of The Appeal To Authority, Jean Goodwin, Raymie Mckerrow
OSSA Conference Archive
As appeals to expert authority shift from “fallacies” to “argument schemes,” argumentation theorists are called on to provide critical questions for assessing them. I argue that current treatments focus too heavily on assessing expertise, and not enough on judging trustworthiness. I propose instead a norma-tive pragmatic account of the rational force of the appeal to expert authority, one that emphasizes the ex-pert's actions in constructing his/her own legitimate trustworthiness.
Exploring Customer Loyalty Following Service Recovery: The Relationships Of Perceived Justice, Commitment, Trust, And Loyalty, Soyeon Kim, Jay Kandampully
Exploring Customer Loyalty Following Service Recovery: The Relationships Of Perceived Justice, Commitment, Trust, And Loyalty, Soyeon Kim, Jay Kandampully
Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism
Existing research shows that loyalty is a function of customer perceptions of trust and commitment following service recovery. This study proposes and tests an integrative model of customer loyalty following service recovery in the context of social exchange theory. Specifically, this article argues that perceptions of justice (distributive, procedural, and interactional justice) in service recovery influence customer trust-commitment towards the service encounters, which in turn affects customer loyalty. Customers’ trust and commitment in service providers were proposed to mediate the relationship between perceived justice to service recovery efforts and subsequent loyalty intention. Finally, the author discusses important theoretical and managerial …

Customer Perceptions Of Corporate Social Responsibility Of Service Firms: Impact On Customer Attitudes And Behavioral Intentions, Priyanko Guchait, Mark Anner, Luorong Wu
Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism
Using an experimental research design, this study investigates the influence of customer perceptions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on customer attitudes (loyalty, trust and commitment) and behavioral intentions (patronage intentions, switching intentions and word of mouth). Focusing in the hospitality industry, this study examines whether customer attitudes and behavioral intentions are affected only by the services provided to them by the service companies (service quality), or are also affected by the services provided by the service companies to its own employees, suppliers or to the society (CSR). The present study is based on the understanding that customers have already developed …

An Analysis Of Information Sources For Trust Development In Managerial Relationships, Yung-Kuei Huang, Linchi Kwok
Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism
In view of different information-processing approaches over the course of a managerial relationship, this paper provides a conceptual analysis to address which factors that influence interpersonal trust are subject to change in their relative importance over the course of a manager-employee relationship and which factors are more likely to remain salient over time. This paper examines the utility of disposition to trust, social categories, trustor’s moods/emotions, third party influences, history of interaction, and shared perspectives as sources of trust-related data over time. As a number of propositions are formulated to encourage future intellectual dialogue on trust development in managerial relationships, …
