Statistical Precision Of A Replicated Farm Grazing Trial Versus Replicated Paddock Trials, K. P. Vogel, L. E. Moser, D. E. Bauer
Statistical Precision Of A Replicated Farm Grazing Trial Versus Replicated Paddock Trials, K. P. Vogel, L. E. Moser, D. E. Bauer
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The experimental unit for animal average daily gain (ADG) and gain/ha in grazing trials is the paddock. Grazing trials on research stations often are conducted using small paddocks because animal and land costs restrict the number of treatments, replicates, and animals per paddock. Land and animal restrictions can be reduced by conducting trials on farms using animals provided by cooperating farmers. Farmers typically want only a single replicate on their farms and as result, virtually all on-farm trials in the USA and elsewhere have been un-replicated demonstration trials from which estimates of experimental error cannot be obtained. Farms can be …

Making Posters To Understand Statistics: Towards A Didactical Approach In Communication Design, Michele Mauri, Simone Vantini, Beatrice Gobbo, Tommaso Elli, Elena Aversa, Andrea Benedetti, María De Los Ángeles Briones Rojas, Gabriele Colombo
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The paper describes a didactical approach to introducing statistics to communication design students at the master level. The approach helps them develop a critical attitude toward data manipulation and information visualization, acknowledging a lack of education in such areas despite their growing relevance in the communication design field. In previous experiences, we observed how theoretical lessons in statistics were inefficient because they were perceived as distant from the communication design practice. We, therefore, adopted a “thinking-through-doing” approach: instead of asking students to study statistical methods, we asked them to design a poster explaining them. In the paper, we present the …
Statistical Analyses Of Model Ensembles For Policy Support, Judith Verstegen
Statistical Analyses Of Model Ensembles For Policy Support, Judith Verstegen
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Scenario-thinking has become common in modelling for policy support, particularly through the climate change mitigation scenarios developed over the successive IPCC reports. Often, multi-model ensemble runs are performed, representing a set of possible descriptions of the modelled system to account for our limited understanding of this system. For each scenario, this results in a distribution of model outcomes that represents the range of potential system states and their probabilities. In our opinion, model outcome distributions are not used to the fullest at the moment. For example, only the median and minimum and maximum are reported, possibly because policy makers are …

Joint Orientation Readings From The Gorge Of Massies Creek, Greene County, Oh, Paul P. Coviello
Joint Orientation Readings From The Gorge Of Massies Creek, Greene County, Oh, Paul P. Coviello
Scholars Symposium
It is often assumed that jointing in the dolomite bedrock of Massies Creek Gorge influences the course that the stream follows. These assumptions are based off of knowledge from previous work. In order to provide evidence for or against these assumptions, strike and dip measurements were taken on vertical joints within the bedrock walls of the gorge, with the focus being on the strike. These measurements, numbering 315 in total, were taken on both the north and south walls of the gorge, as well as in locations outside of the gorge, again on both the north and south sides. Care …

A Quantitative Assessment Of The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, Grace Mcfarlane
A Quantitative Assessment Of The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, Grace Mcfarlane
Scholars Week
A Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) program offered in an inner-city health center run by the Cincinnati Health Department, which started in 2014, was created to help those in an underserved population learn how to manage their diabetes. Two key measurements, A1C (glycated hemoglobin) and BMI (body mass index), were taken over time to monitor their progress. In this study, we analyzed quantitatively whether or not there was a significant improvement in their BMI and A1C values over the course of two years since they joined DSME program as any improvement would imply a potentially healthier lifestyle in regards to their …
The Statistical Comparison Of Remittances In Kosovo With Balkan Countries, Blerina Jashari, Mentor Geci
The Statistical Comparison Of Remittances In Kosovo With Balkan Countries, Blerina Jashari, Mentor Geci
UBT International Conference
Taking into account that Kosovo is a developing country, revenues coming from other countries play an important role. The paper will present a clear picture that examines the level of remittances in the country as well as external countries. In addition to the level of remittances, a literature review will also be made regarding the methodology used. Remittances received in Kosovo, which also represent the largest category within the secondary income account, amounted to euro 568.8 million in September 2015, representing an annual growth of 12.5 percent. One of the reasons why a remittance study is done is to identify …
Deep Machine Learning For Mechanical Performance And Failure Prediction, Elijah Reber, Nickolas D. Winovich, Guang Lin
Deep Machine Learning For Mechanical Performance And Failure Prediction, Elijah Reber, Nickolas D. Winovich, Guang Lin
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Deep learning has provided opportunities for advancement in many fields. One such opportunity is being able to accurately predict real world events. Ensuring proper motor function and being able to predict energy output is a valuable asset for owners of wind turbines. In this paper, we look at how effective a deep neural network is at predicting the failure or energy output of a wind turbine. A data set was obtained that contained sensor data from 17 wind turbines over 13 months, measuring numerous variables, such as spindle speed and blade position and whether or not the wind turbine experienced …
Addressing The Stem Challenge Through Targeted Teaching : What’S The Evidence?, Dianne Siemon
Addressing The Stem Challenge Through Targeted Teaching : What’S The Evidence?, Dianne Siemon
2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences
Numerous public reports are pointing to the critical importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to Australia’s future, but the number of students studying STEM subjects in senior years is declining, and many students in the primary and middle years of schooling do not have access to the ways of thinking and learning needed to succeed in school mathematics. Research over the past 10 years has established the critical role of multiplicative thinking in building student knowledge and confidence at this level of schooling, but there is a need for an expanded, evidence-based learning and teaching framework to support …
Modeling Fantasy Football Quarterbacks, Kyle Zeberlein, Myles Wallin
Modeling Fantasy Football Quarterbacks, Kyle Zeberlein, Myles Wallin
Celebration of Learning
Fantasy football is a way to score NFL players based off of their statistics in particular categories. We have created formulas for modeling every quarterback’s fantasy football points per game in the 2015-2016 season. Our model is partitioned into four sub-models depending on the length of the quarterback’s career in the NFL. We have developed a weighted model based on previous years’ performance of the quarterback, of the defense, and of the quarterback against the defense using data from the NFL. We compare our projections for the season against Yahoo’s projections for the season.
Topological Methods For The Quantification And Analysis Of Complex Phenotypes, Patrick S. Medina, Rebecca W. Doerge
Topological Methods For The Quantification And Analysis Of Complex Phenotypes, Patrick S. Medina, Rebecca W. Doerge
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture
Quantitative Trait Locus (QTL) mapping of complex traits, such as leaf venation or root structures, require the phenotyping and genotyping of large populations. Sufficient genotyping is accomplished with cost effective high-throughput assays, however labor costs often makes sufficient phenotyping prohibitively limited. In order to develop efficient high-throughput phenotyping platforms for complex traits algorithms and methods for quantifying these traits are needed. It is often desirable to study the spatial organization of these phenotypes from the images generated by high-throughput platforms. With the goal of quantifying the traits, many approaches try to identify several core traits useful in describing the phenotypic …

Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture
The utilization of statistical methods an their applications within the new field of study known as Topological Data Analysis has has tremendous potential for broadening our exploration and understanding of complex, high-dimensional data spaces. This paper provides an introductory overview of the mathematical underpinnings of Topological Data Analysis, the workflow to convert samples of data to topological summary statistics, and some of the statistical methods developed for performing inference on these topological summary statistics. The intention of this non-technical overview is to motivate statisticians who are interested in learning more about the subject.

The Financial Crisis: Origins, Causes And Conclusions, Eneida Permeti, Blerta Mjeda
UBT International Conference
The crisis in recent years took start in response to a crisis of the real estate market in the United States in 2007. The year 2009 has seen an economic crisis and between 2010 and 2011 it was known the spreading of the crisis sovereign debt and public finances of many countries. The financial markets failed in their main task: the allocation of risk. The products and services traded in the financial market are characterized by the immateriality and legal complexity. It means a high uncertainty degree and a high risk. Therefore is very important to protect the investors and …
Determining Return On Investment: The Importance And Development Of Statistics Collection For Information Literacy Training At Cput Libraries, Janine Lockhart, Deborah Becker
Determining Return On Investment: The Importance And Development Of Statistics Collection For Information Literacy Training At Cput Libraries, Janine Lockhart, Deborah Becker
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Academic libraries are increasingly required to prove their value as university management is demanding evidence of return on investment. The Information Literacy (IL) programme at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Libraries has undergone a process of development over many years from the initial random training sessions to the development and approval of a certified short course.
With these developments came the need for more relevant and detailed statistics. In a parallel process, the recording of the statistics for IL and other training done by library staff have therefore also evolved over the past few years.
This paper outlines the …
Analyzing The Seahawks' Offensive Play-Calling, Adam Brand
Analyzing The Seahawks' Offensive Play-Calling, Adam Brand
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
Analytics has become a valuable tool in sports. Movies like Moneyball have even popularized the mathematical methods that sports teams are now using to try to gain an advantage over their opponents. Sports analysts are also using analytics to attempt to predict outcomes in sports. Since offensive plays in football offer clearly-defined, short term events (plays), offensive play-calling in football is the perfect opportunity to analyze how a team calls plays and how those plays affect performance. My project will attempt to analyze all of the Seahawks’ 2013 regular season offensive plays by fitting specific play events to probability distributions …
Using Library Statistics To Inform, Promote, And Advocate Library Services For New Generation Users, Deborah Becker, Hillary Hartle
Using Library Statistics To Inform, Promote, And Advocate Library Services For New Generation Users, Deborah Becker, Hillary Hartle
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
This paper is based on a case study of how the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is actively using library statistics to promote and advocate for better library services for its users in a new digital environment.
At CPUT Libraries we realized that we need to promote our activities, determine our return on investment and show what value we add to the lives of our clients. This could be determined by the increase in the quality of work done and services used by the different user market segments. Four market segments have been identified namely, CPUT management, library staff, …
How Do You Count That?: Statistical Reporting Of Online Library Instruction Activities, Tim Bottorff, Andrew Todd
How Do You Count That?: Statistical Reporting Of Online Library Instruction Activities, Tim Bottorff, Andrew Todd
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2010
Until recent years, library instruction (LI) was usually conducted in face-to-face (F2F) settings. Statistical reporting of LI activities tends, therefore, to focus on measures relevant to F2F settings -- for example, the number of "sessions" (classes) and the number of "participants" (students). However, newer forms of LI conducted in the online realm (from librarians embedded in classes through courseware, to online library tutorials, to for-credit online library research courses, and beyond) may be difficult to count in traditional ways, with significant implications: the way librarians quantify their activities can affect everything from advocacy efforts to funding decisions to individual or …

On The Role Of Pre And Post-Processing In Environmental Data Mining, Karina Gibert, Joaquín Izquierdo, Geoffrey Holmes, Ioannis N. Athanasiadis, Joaquim Comas, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The quality of discovered knowledge is highly depending on data quality. Unfortunately real data use to contain noise, uncertainty, errors, redundancies or even irrelevant information. The more complex is the reality to be analyzed, the higher the risk of getting low quality data. Knowledge Discovery from Databases (KDD) offers a global framework to prepare data in the right form to perform correct analyses. On the other hand, the quality of decisions taken upon KDD results, depend not only on the quality of the results themselves, but on the capacity of the system to communicate those results in an understandable form. …

Teaching Evaluation: A Complicated Issue, Z. Lin, K.H. Chan, Q. Xue
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
To justify/quantify/qualify on teaching evaluation may be difficult and not objective as there are so much variables. Comparing teaching evaluations obtained by individual lecturer may not be meaningful, as each staff facing independent course with different students, course and other variables (or statistically, each is an independent event and a single mean value must not be compared directly with another).
