The Journey To Becoming A Reader: Relationships Between Home Activities, Attitudes And Reading, Kylie Hillman
2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences
The Progress in International Reading Study – PIRLS for short – has been running since 2001, with Australia joining in 2011. Along with a well-researched measure of students’ reading comprehension, PIRLS includes a number of questionnaires for students, teachers, principals and parents/guardians that provide background and context for students’ performance in the reading assessment. This presentation will provide educators with an introduction to PIRLS and discuss what PIRLS can tell us about various home, attitudinal and behavioural factors that relate to Year 4 students’ performance in the PIRLS reading comprehension assessments.
We will discuss relationships between reading scores and factors …
Assessing Reading: How Assessment Can Be Used To Target Teaching And Enhance Understanding Of Reading Comprehension, Sandra Knowles
Assessing Reading: How Assessment Can Be Used To Target Teaching And Enhance Understanding Of Reading Comprehension, Sandra Knowles
2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences
The skills demonstrated by a proficient reader are not easy to untangle. Current research acknowledges that reading comprehension is a highly complex area of ability, one that needs to be understood as the coordination of several integrated processes. Using example test questions and data, this presentation explores how assessment can help us make sense of reading comprehension in a way that curricula and commonly used teaching strategies cannot. Assessment is evidence that informs us about the skills involved in the reading process, how they relate to each other, and how they develop in complexity. When assessment is understood in this …
The Relationship Between Extraversion And Listening Comprehension Under High And Low-Salience Visual Distraction Conditions, Nicole Virzi, Steve Rouse, Cindy Miller-Perrin
The Relationship Between Extraversion And Listening Comprehension Under High And Low-Salience Visual Distraction Conditions, Nicole Virzi, Steve Rouse, Cindy Miller-Perrin
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
The proposed study contributes to the pool of research examining the link between level of extraversion and sensory stimulation. Numerous studies have shown that introverts are more susceptible to forms of auditory distraction than extraverts when completing cognitive tasks requiring visual attention, but no study has examined the opposite relationship: the differing effects of visual distraction on auditory comprehension amongst introverts and extraverts. Using undergraduate college students as participants, this study tested three hypotheses: 1) there will be a negative correlation between level of extraversion and self-reported distraction while under high-salience visual distraction, 2) there will be a positive correlation …
Using The Hpst Framework To Improve Reading Comprehension With Students With Intellectual Disabilities In A University Setting, Jose M. Pombo, Amanda Giust
Using The Hpst Framework To Improve Reading Comprehension With Students With Intellectual Disabilities In A University Setting, Jose M. Pombo, Amanda Giust
South Florida Education Research Conference
The HPST Framework, a guide developed for document analysis (Pombo,2015), was implemented in a post secondary transition program at Florida International University. The purpose of this study was to explore the necessary adaptions for the implementation with students with ID at the university level as well as their reading comprehension outcomes.

Effects Of The Use Of The Educreations Application In The Reading Comprehension Of An Adolescent With Autism And Speech Delay, Alba C. Zamora
South Florida Education Research Conference
Comprehension is one of the most challenging aspects of reading for people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The present paper describes an action research that intends to investigate the effect of the use of the Educreations application in the reading comprehension of a 19-year-old boy with ASD and speech delay.

Seven Steps To Engaging At-Risk Students With Text, Jelani Jabari Ph.D.
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
Diminishing student engagement with text remains a colossal challenge with children at-risk. In this highly interactive session, participants will explore a seven-step process for engaging students with text as well as techniques for presenting highly engaging literacy lessons. Attendees will walk away with names, reading level, descriptions (and actual samples) of several engaging texts.

The Effect Of Music Familiarity On Students’ Reading Comprehension Performance, Heidi J. Johnson, Ben B. Holdredge, William T. Mckinley
The Effect Of Music Familiarity On Students’ Reading Comprehension Performance, Heidi J. Johnson, Ben B. Holdredge, William T. Mckinley
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
The current study examined 85 university students’ performance in a reading comprehension task under three conditions: silence, familiar, or unfamiliar music. The results indicated that the students in the familiar music condition performed significantly worse than those in the silent conditions, as well as those in the unfamiliar music condition.
