Effect Of Plant Species On The Development And Vertical Migration Of Larvae Of Gastrointestinal Nematodes Which Parasitise Sheep, J H. Niezen, W.A. G. Charleston, J Hodgson, C M. Miller, H A. Robertson

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The development and migration of gastrointestinal nematode larvae on a range of herbage species were compared following a series of standardised contaminations with sheep faeces over two years. In 1992/93, greatest numbers of larvae were recovered from browntop (Agrostis capillaris cv Grasslands Muster), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata cv Grasslands Kara), ryegrass (Lolium perenne cv Grasslands Nui) and Yorkshire fog (Holcus lanatus cv Massey Basyn) while the lowest numbers were recovered from white clover (Trifolium repens cv Grasslands Huia) with the other herbages intermediate. In 1993/94, highest numbers were recovered from Yorkshire fog and ryegrass, lowest numbers from …

Perceptions Of Young African Scholars’ Migration From Africa To The Global North: A Case Of Selected Kenyan Universities, Anne David, Enock Magack Masaki Nov 2023

Perceptions Of Young African Scholars’ Migration From Africa To The Global North: A Case Of Selected Kenyan Universities, Anne David, Enock Magack Masaki

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

As the old adage says, ‘East or West Home is best’, that may not be so true for the young African adult. Despite Africa being a very rich continent in its culture as well as physical resources and beautiful weather to a large extent, most of the African youth who live in Africa always dream of a life abroad. So much so that the thought of migrating to the West, either the United States of America or Europe seems to offer the once in a life time solution to all their problems. This is so real that many risk death …

Who Am I? A Qualitative Study Exploring Identities And Sense Of Belonging Of Black Migrant Women In South Africa, Eleana Velentza Nov 2023

Who Am I? A Qualitative Study Exploring Identities And Sense Of Belonging Of Black Migrant Women In South Africa, Eleana Velentza

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Post-apartheid South Africa experienced a massive migration flow of African migrant women due to the accommodative Constitution of the Republic of South Africa that was promulgated in 1996. Diversity, multiculturalism, and ethnic and social heterogeneity have been some of the features and challenges of modern South Africa blending national and non-national elements. Nevertheless, black migrant women experience significant levels of xenophobia and multiple layers of discrimination because of “being a woman”, “being Black” and “being a migrant”. The perennial problem of xenophobia in South Africa towards Black Africans is complex and multifaceted; the institutional side of xenophobia circumvents other explanations …

Behind Derogatory Migrants' Terms For Venezuelan Migrants: Xenophobia And Sexism Identification With Twitter Data And Nlp, Joseph Martínez, Melissa Miller-Felton, Jose Padilla, Erika Frydenlund

Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference

The sudden arrival of many migrants can present new challenges for host communities and create negative attitudes that reflect that tension. In the case of Colombia, with the influx of over 2.5 million Venezuelan migrants, such tensions arose. Our research objective is to investigate how those sentiments arise in social media. We focused on monitoring derogatory terms for Venezuelans, specifically veneco and veneca. Using a dataset of 5.7 million tweets from Colombian users between 2015 and 2021, we determined the proportion of tweets containing those terms. We observed a high prevalence of xenophobic and defamatory language correlated with the …

Genetic Variation In The Perennial Ryegrass Fungal Endophyte Neotyphodium Lolii, E. Van Zijll De Jong, N. R. Bannan, A. V. Stewart, K. F. M. Reed, M. P. Dobrowolski, K. F. Smith, G. C. Spangenberg, J. W. Forster

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The common fungal endophytes (Neotyphodium species) of temperate pasture grasses are associated with improved tolerance to water and nutrient stress and resistance to insect pests, but are also the causal agents of animal toxicoses. Considerable variation exists among grass-endophyte associations for these beneficial and detrimental agronomic traits. The extent to which this variation may be attributed to the endophyte genotype, the host genotype or environmental interactions is currently unknown. The development of molecular genetic markers for endophytes based on simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci and the demonstration of the specific detection of endophytes in planta with these markers (van …

An Analysis Of The Concept Of Hospitality In The United Kingdom’S Immigration Policy, Catelyn Ballard Jan 2022

An Analysis Of The Concept Of Hospitality In The United Kingdom’S Immigration Policy, Catelyn Ballard

Capstone Showcase

The United Kingdom offers a Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme for the most vulnerable Syrians fleeing the Civil War. For those who do not meet the requirements, they travel to the UK on their own seeking asylum. The United Kingdom deems itself as welcoming to all immigrants; however, while looking at the Syrian population, it is obvious that those who come via the scheme are offered more support while acclimating, compared to those who migrate on their own. This thesis will look at literature on hospitality in order to understand why the UK is welcoming to some Syrians but not …

Mental Health In The Undocuqueer Community, Cailan Cordwell Dec 2021

Mental Health In The Undocuqueer Community, Cailan Cordwell

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Trauma is increasingly experienced by people in transit as border militarization increases migrants’ exposure to violence and forces them into more precarious situations. For queer migrants, this includes situations where they are more likely to experience persecution and sexual violence. This presentation explores the availability of care for queer undocumented migrants in the United States after surviving a precarious and potentially deadly journey from their country of origin to the US, as well as forms of alternative care developed by the undocuqueer community. In particular, I focus on access to care for LGBT migrants, who face stigmatization on multiple levels …

A Gendered Analysis Of Habermas And The Underrepresented Narratives Of Domestic Migrant Claims, K C. Abalos-Orendain Dec 2021

A Gendered Analysis Of Habermas And The Underrepresented Narratives Of Domestic Migrant Claims, K C. Abalos-Orendain

The Canadian Society for Study of Practical Ethics / Société Canadienne Pour L'étude De L'éthique Appliquée — SCEEA

This paper explores the limitations and possibilities of Habermas’ critical social theory and discourse ethics by utilizing the analyses of two of his former students, Nancy Fraser and Seyla Benhabib. Fraser shows us the limitations of Habermas’ position because it fails to take into consideration the female perspective and contribution to the labor force. This raises the question of migration within the gender framework. On the other hand, Benhabib argues for the potential of Habermas’ philosophy by reminding us of its universalist stance.

Evolving Migration Trends From Afghanistan: Management Andhonourable Repatriation Of Afghan Refugees In Pakistan, Waseem Ishaque, Shabnam Gul, Muhammad Faizan Asghar

Security Research Hub Reports

Since 1979, Pakistan has been a key player in the management of Afghan refugees despite challenging economic and security conditions. The repatriation efforts in the past could not bring conclusive results as a significant population still live in Pakistan. The outbreak of COVID 19 has increased their vulnerability due to inadequate quarantine and health facilities. The positive political developments by way of new elections and a political settlement with the Taliban provide an opportunity for honourable repatriation of Afghan refugees. This article investigates the dilemma in the management of Afghan refugees in Pakistan and suggests a viable course of action …

Migration, Agriculture And Rurality: Dynamics, Experiences And Policiesin Europe, A. Corrado, C. Zumpano

Security Research Hub Reports

The themes of migration and mobility have become particularly relevant with respect to the analysis of the transformation of rural areas and agriculture in the European context, in the light of demographic and socio-economic dynamics, which have drawn new maps of development, inequalities and disintegration, also with relevant political repercussions (e.g. in terms of the growth of right-wing populist movements), but also of moments of crisis that have imprinted new rhythms to the trends in place and have produced new scenarios. The economic and financial crisis of 2007-2008, the socalled “refugee crisis” of 2015 and the Covid-19 pandemic from 2020 …

Migration Forecasting—Significance And Approaches, Johann Fuchs, Doris Söhnlein, Patrizio Vanella Jan 2021

Migration Forecasting—Significance And Approaches, Johann Fuchs, Doris Söhnlein, Patrizio Vanella

Security Research Hub Reports

International migration is a global phenomenon with a current estimate of 281 million people globally being counted as migrants, defined as living outside one’s country of origin, with an increasing tendency [1]. Reasons for migration are diverse, and classically defined by Lee [2] into the two categories of push and pull factors, with the first being factors repelling individuals from their region of origin, such as violent conflicts, poor nutritional and health standards, lack of work, or restrictions to freedom of speech. Pull factors instead are those attracting individuals to a specific region, such as better opportunities in employment or …

Global Warming And Population Change Both Heighten Future Risk Of Human Displacement Due To River Floods, Pui Man Kam, Gabriela Aznar-Siguan, Jacob Schewe, Leonardo Milano, Justin Ginnetti, Sven Willner, Jamie W. Mccaughey, David N. Bresch

Security Research Hub Reports

Every year, millions of people around the world are being displaced from their homes due to climate-related disasters. River flooding is responsible for a large part of this displacement. Previous studies have shown that river flood risk is expected to change as a result of global warming and its effects on the hydrological cycle. At the same time, future scenarios of socio-economic development imply substantial population increases in many of the areas that presently experience disaster-induced displacement. Here we show that both global warming and population change are projected to lead to substantial increases in flood-induced displacement risk over the …

Security Research Hub Reports

The United States anticipates receiving more than 300,000 new asylum claimants and refugees in Fiscal Year (FY) 2021. Pursuant to Section 207(d) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), the President proposes resettling up to 15,000 refugees under the FY 2021 refugee admissions ceiling, and anticipates receiving new asylum claims that include more than 290,000 individuals. This proposed refugee admissions ceiling reflects the continuing backlog of over 1.1 million asylum-seekers who are awaiting adjudication of their claims inside the United States, and it accounts for the arrival of refugees whose resettlement in the United States was delayed due to the …

Primer On U.S. Immigration Policy, Congress Research Service

Security Research Hub Reports

U.S. immigration policy is governed largely by the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), which was first codified in 1952 and has been amended significantly several times since. U.S. immigration policy contains two major aspects. One facilitates migration flows into the United States according to principles of admission that are based upon national interest. These broad principles currently include family reunification, U.S. labor market contribution, origin-country diversity, and humanitarian assistance. The United States has long distinguished permanent from temporary immigration. Permanent immigration occurs through family and employer-sponsored categories, the diversity immigrant visa lottery, and refugee and asylee admissions. Temporary immigration occurs …

Embracing Large Calibration Spaces To Unify Model Structure Across Scale: A Migration Example, Andrew Bell Sep 2020

Embracing Large Calibration Spaces To Unify Model Structure Across Scale: A Migration Example, Andrew Bell

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The MIDAS (Migration, Intensification, and Diversification as Adaptive Strategies) framework was designed to apply across a range of scales from local rural-urban commuting through to international migration, drawing on prospect theory and push-pull-mooring theory to create a decision framework that places the many different factors that shape livelihoods decisions on a common footing. Two mechanisms that make this possible are i) a specification for all possible elements of a livelihood (income, social services, access to nature, asset use value, etc.) as streams of utility with seasonal structure, as well as monetary and time costs; and ii) a comparatively large calibration …

Giving New Life To Old Memories: Migrating Central Florida Memory From Contentdm To Digital Commons, Lee Dotson

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group 2020

For 18 years, CONTENTdm was home to Central Florida Memory (CFM). CFM is a cooperative project started by three partner institutions in 2002 to provide an online platform and focal point for gathering, preserving, and disseminating the documents, artifacts, and stories of the history of Central Florida. As the project grew to include content from nine partners, UCF remained the primary technology support and host institution for Central Florida Memory. Recent server consolidations and lack of support for locally hosted CONTENTdm instances underscored the urgent need to migrate this valued cultural heritage content to another platform. In the Fall of …

Local Consequence Of Global Process: Challenges Of Maintaining Pastoral Production In High Mountain Pastures Of Nepal, Lila Nath Sharma Feb 2020

Local Consequence Of Global Process: Challenges Of Maintaining Pastoral Production In High Mountain Pastures Of Nepal, Lila Nath Sharma

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Grassland pastures are important livelihood resources for local people in agro-pastoral production in high mountainous areas of Nepal. The character of these pastures, as part of cultural landscape, result from historical interaction of human activities and local ecological processes. Fire and grazing are two important landscape drivers that have a direct impact on the structure, diversity and composition of pastures. Recently, grasslands in many semi-arid regions of world are undergoing rapid transformation as consequence of changes in fire and grazing regimes. One conspicuous change is an abrupt proliferation of native shrub species. Migration of herders away from marginal mountain areas …

The Impact Of Migration In Latin America And The Caribbean. A Review Of Recent Evidence, Juan Blyde, Matias Busso, Ana Maria Ibanez

Security Research Hub Reports

This paper summarizes recent evidence on the effects of migration on a variety of outcomes including labor markets, education, health, crime and prejudice, international trade, assimilation, family separation, diaspora networks, and return migration. Given the lack of studies looking at migration flows between developing countries, this paper contributes to fill a gap in the literature by providing evidence of the impact of South-South migration in general and for the Latin American countries in particular. The evidence highlighted in this summary provides useful insights for designing policies to leverage the developmental outcomes of migration while limiting its potential negative effects.

Forced Displacement In A Time Of A Global Pandemic, Geoff Gilbert Jan 2020

Forced Displacement In A Time Of A Global Pandemic, Geoff Gilbert

Security Research Hub Reports

Covid-19 has limited “access” by refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). First, access to protection at the frontiers of states and access to services in a state. Covid-19 was defined in terms of a disease from abroad, so refugees who were always seen as “other” are seen as tainted in yet a new way. Nevertheless, states have a right to control their own borders and in a time of a global pandemic, entry can be restricted. This paper will argue, however, that those controls cannot be arbitrary and must respect international refugee law and international human rights law, as well …

Climate Change Impacts On Environment: Human Displacement And Social Conflicts In Nigeria, T.E. Olagunju, S.O. Adewoye, A.O. Adewoye

Security Research Hub Reports

In northern Nigeria, drought and desertification have grossly affected water available and land carrying capacity for both pastureland and farmlands. Hence, the northerners, particularly, the youth inevitably migrate to the south for greener pasture for themselves and the animals. Most of these youths are uneducated and not skilled to secure employment, they, therefore, become an instrument in the hands of religious bigotry. This climatic change can also result in a rise in sea level, thereby increasing the flood events especially, in Nigeria's lowlands. These changes have not only caused fierce conflicts buthave additionally brought about the death of thousands and …

Travelers Of The Caribbean: Positioning Brasília In Haitian Migration Routes Through Latin America, Gustavo Dias, João Carlos Jarochinski Silva, Sidney Antonio Da Silva

Security Research Hub Reports

This paper examines how Haitian migration connecting Haiti to Brasília is enacted through Latin America. The empirical data come from an ethnographic study of Haitians in Brasilia. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with 34 migrants to reconstruct their mobilities. We explore how the Haitians’ historical practice of living on the move has enabled them to deal with border controls and develop tactics to circulate through several Latin America countries, including Brazil. We argue that their migration to the Brazilian capital can neither be understood as a linear movement characterized by an established Haiti-Brasilia connection nor defined as movement …
