Gender Bias And Race Bias In Student Evaluations Of Teaching, Megan Boyce, Audree Britte Apr 2020

Gender Bias And Race Bias In Student Evaluations Of Teaching, Megan Boyce, Audree Britte

Student Research Symposium

There is mixed evidence regarding the presence of gender bias in student evaluations of teaching (Foote, Harmon, & Mayo, 2003; Morgan et al., 2016). Given the importance placed on student evaluations of teaching in regards to promotion and tenure, it is essential to determine whether gender bias is present and to what extent (Laube, Massoni, Sprague, & Ferber, 2007). Many previous studies have shown there is strong evidence of implicit bias in the traits we expect to see from female and male professors, but these studies have been limited by how they identify the presence of bias (e.g. Basow, 1995; …

The Relationship Between Child’s Toy Selection and Anger: Then and Now

Female expression of anger has long been stigmatized due to historically, and still presently, strict gender roles. Anger is considered a “masculine” emotion, and women have often been discouraged from crossing that gender line. In a study done by Salerno et al. (2018), undergraduate students rated the effectiveness of both male and female attorneys who presented identical closing arguments. When the closing argument was spoken in an angry tone, the male attorneys were seen as significantly more effective than the women attorneys. When the students described the attorneys after …

Welcome To Gendered Dada, Morgan Drawdy

Georgia College Student Research Events

This paper explores the works of art throughout the Dada art period from three specific artists; Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, and Baroness Else Von Freytag-Loringhoven. It delves deep into the making of the pieces and the influences behind them. The pieces are analyzed through the lens of gender and gender bias that is caused by the changing of societal roles during World War One. Those roles touching on topics such as women entering the work force and the evolution and devolution of the typical masculine role throughout history. The paper is brought together to explore how these societal changes influenced …

Gender Differences In Factors Influencing Retention In Aviation Occupations, Katya K. Rivera, Katie Kirkpatrick, Marisa Aguiar, Lindsay Stevenson, Haydee Cuevas Ph.D. Mar 2020

Gender Differences In Factors Influencing Retention In Aviation Occupations, Katya K. Rivera, Katie Kirkpatrick, Marisa Aguiar, Lindsay Stevenson, Haydee Cuevas Ph.D.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

In the past 90 years, the workforce has been diversified in many fields yet diversity in the pilot workforce has remained stagnant. This also holds true for other aviation occupations (e.g., aviation maintenance, air traffic control). Promoting gender diversity is one approach to address the pilot shortage and ensure a strong aviation workforce in the future. This will involve opening aviation occupations to all members of society: leveraging the untapped potential in groups historically underrepresented in the industry. Women are a vast resource overlooked for far too long. Aviation companies need to target this group to fill the gap left …

Learning At Work In Female-Dominated And Male-Dominated Industries: A Piaac Study, Joshua C. Collins, Tobin Lopez, Jill Zarestky, Ellen Scully-Russ

Adult Education Research Conference

Learning at work has the potential to be an important contributor to employee performance and professional advancement. Yet, gender inequality is prevalent in many workplaces and may influence the types and quality of learning to which employees are exposed. This study’s purpose was to examine the relationship between female- and male-dominated industries and learning at work as measured by the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). For those industry sectors determined to be female- or male-dominated, we used a linear regression model to determine whether a relationship exists between gender dominance and learning at work based on …

The Pink And Blue Problem: Altercasting In Gendered Advertising, Abigail Benn Jan 2020

The Pink And Blue Problem: Altercasting In Gendered Advertising, Abigail Benn

Capstone Showcase

When you meet a baby for the first time, and you don’t know its sex, if its wearing pink clothes, most people will automatically assume it’s a girl; or if they’re wearing blue clothes, it’s automatically a boy. The pink and blue problem is the enforcing of gender stereotypes through color, associated roles, and imagery. The root of this problem is that many people are unaware of the difference between “sex” and “gender”, and that they can be mutually exclusive. Your sex is the body you’re born with, and all the parts that come with it, while your gender is …

The Cultivation Theory And Reality Television: An Old Theory With A Modern Twist, Jeffrey Weiss Jan 2020

The Cultivation Theory And Reality Television: An Old Theory With A Modern Twist, Jeffrey Weiss

Capstone Showcase

George Gerbner, a Hungarian-born professor of communication, founded the cultivation theory, one of the most popular and regarded theories in the communications world. Developed in the mid 20th century, the theory focus on the long-term effects of television on people. Longer exposure to signs, images and people on television cultivates their perception of reality in the real world. The television became a household staple during this time. Families often spent time together watching programming together, however, it played out different effects for each person. Television's constant visual and auditory stimulation on a person made it easier to cultivate certain messages, …

“Circumstantially Volatile”: A Narrative Study Of The Lived First-Year Experience At A New England Liberal Arts College, Patrick Flynn Jan 2020

“Circumstantially Volatile”: A Narrative Study Of The Lived First-Year Experience At A New England Liberal Arts College, Patrick Flynn

Adult Education Research Conference

College-ready, traditional-aged undergraduate students in the United States have been stopping out at an increasingly higher rate over the last forty years. Many students stop out after the first year, which has led researchers to focus on the first-year experience (FYE) as a way of understanding the trend. While the FYE literature, complemented by research in gender theory, the college transition, emerging adulthood, and college student development provide a foundation for considering the problem, there have been very few studies concerning the FYE of white males. Understanding the FYE at a substantive level for this population will lead to further …

“We’Re Here, We’Re Queer, We Will Not Live In Fear!”: A Content Analysis Exploring Gender Disparity In The Public Reappropriation Of Lgbtq+ Slurs, Nicolas Hall

Capstone Showcase

As minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ community have faced many hardships throughout history, such as the use of language as a weapon against them. However, this research explores the public display of linguistic reappropriation of LGBTQ+ derogatory language and terms within the community. Throughout history, the use of slurs (e.g. faggot and dyke) and their social definitions have shifted from having no connection to the community to directly affected these individuals. These terms have been used to demonize members of the LGBTQ+ community for decades. Despite this reality, there are some scholars who suggest that these terms are being reappropriated, …

Abortion As A Human Right In The United States: Exploring The Role Of Cedaw Cities In Challenging The Hyde Amendment, Jessica Pierson Oct 2019

Abortion As A Human Right In The United States: Exploring The Role Of Cedaw Cities In Challenging The Hyde Amendment, Jessica Pierson

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Women’s sexual and reproductive rights are foundational to gender equality. Having access to abortion care is fundamental to the full realization of a woman’s human rights. Although abortion is legal in the United States, anti-choice groups and conservative lawmakers have been successful in restricting the right to an abortion, particularly through legislation like the Hyde Amendment, which bans federal funds from covering abortion care for low-income women insured by the Medicaid program. U.S. constitutional law has upheld restrictions on abortion care, leaving a large portion of reproductive age women without the ability to exercise their constitutional right to an abortion. …

Exploring The Ongoing Diversity Issues Embedded In Product Design, Franziska Conrad, Gary Underwood Jul 2019

Exploring The Ongoing Diversity Issues Embedded In Product Design, Franziska Conrad, Gary Underwood

Learn X Design Conference Series

The Fourth Industrial Revolution offers great opportunities and challenges to the UK design economy. The emphasis on communication and connectivity, together with new disciplines and new markets derived from technological, political and social change, makes it all the more crucial that the future design industry is infused with a wide range of skills, experience and perspectives. Lack of diversity is hindering that process, and this is especially true in product and industrial design – an industry which is 95% male with no measurable black contingent, according to current figures. Focusing on gender imbalance and opportunities for black, Asian and minority …

Women In Student Leadership: How Group Makeup Changes Communication Style, Katie A. Kuckelheim Apr 2019

Women In Student Leadership: How Group Makeup Changes Communication Style, Katie A. Kuckelheim

Student Symposium

Genderlect theory (Tannen, 1990) examines the differences in communication style of men and women and suggests motivations for those differences (Tannen, 1990). In addition to internal motivation, research has examined other ways in which communication style may change depending upon the gender makeup of the audience. This study sought to determine if there are differences in preferred communication and leadership styles of female student-group leaders based on gender makeup of those groups. Method: 31 undergraduate leaders from student organizations across Ohio Wesleyan’s Campus were surveyed about their leadership and communication styles as well as information about the gender makeup of …

A Heart To Heart Conversation: Sex-Based Differences In Cardiovascular Disease Symptomatology, Mary Simpkins Apr 2019

A Heart To Heart Conversation: Sex-Based Differences In Cardiovascular Disease Symptomatology, Mary Simpkins

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Center for Health Statistics, cardiovascular disease, or heart disease, continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States. Despite being the leading cause of death, heart disease, including stroke and ischemic heart disease, receives significantly lower funding than other causes. While 1 in 25 women will be diagnosed breast cancer, 1 in 2 will experience heart disease (Stock & Redberg, 2012). Not only are the fatality and dangers of heart disease, especially among females, understated, the difference in symptomatology from males to females is rarely …

Are Post-Session Student Surveys Useful?: An Examination of Self-Assessment and Gendered Language in Student Surveys

Many writing centers have clients complete post-session surveys about their experience in their tutor sessions. In this panel of two tutor-scholars, we seek to examine how useful these surveys are for tutors and writing centers. We explicate this through two different lens (abstracts below): tutor’s ability to use the client surveys as reflection and how clients perceive gender differences in their tutors in the surveys.

Panel Part One:

Post-Session Surveys and the Effectiveness of Praise

The struggle to determine the best assessment practices in Writing …

5.2 Sources Of Women Empowerment Information And The Role Of Language Policy And Practice In The Process: The Case Of The Sidama Zone, Ethiopia, Mekdes Tegegnework

International Conference on African Development

The population in Ethiopia consists of more than 50% women. Gender equality and women empowerment have been a fashion in Ethiopia’s governance discourse and by most of the NGOs functioning in the country for decades. Even though efforts by national and international agencies and the government have brought some changes in women empowerment to the country, significant numbers of women are still suffering from gender inequality. The fact that women empowerment is one of the key priorities in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda; calls have come for the importance of revisiting the subject from different angles. Women empowerment is a …

Creating Genderless God-Language Through Lutheran Liturgy, Eileen A. Ruppel Jul 2018

Creating Genderless God-Language Through Lutheran Liturgy, Eileen A. Ruppel

Celebration of Learning

Drawing on the work of feminist and queer theologies, this paper examines and challenges traditional God-language, proposing the implementation of genderless language in Christian worship liturgies. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is used as a model for potential methods of shifting God-language. This work focuses on God-language in Lutheran liturgy, focusing on Scripture, hymns, doctrine, and prayer. This work seeks to prove that implementing genderless God-language throughout the liturgy will provide ELCA leaders the opportunity to be more inclusive, while representing God’s transcendence beyond human conceptions such as gender.

Understanding The Gender Dimension Of Food-Energy-Land Security Nexus In Rural Ethiopia: An Agent-Based Model Approach, Grace Villamor Jun 2018

Understanding The Gender Dimension Of Food-Energy-Land Security Nexus In Rural Ethiopia: An Agent-Based Model Approach, Grace Villamor

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This research focused on the development of a gendered agent-based model to investigate gender dimensions of the food-energy-land nexus in the rural highlands of Ethiopia. This includes the specific roles of men and women that may reduce or enhance synergies among food-energy-land nexus resources, and their specific responses to modern bioenergy interventions to address energy crises. Furthermore, the model was applied to explore whether the introduction of modern bioenergy would improve quality of life for both men and women. The modelling process included the calibration of existing sub-models, such as forest yields, to highlight the dependency of rural households on …

Gender Discrepancy In Asexual Identity:The Effect Of Hegemonic Gender Norms On Asexual Identification, Tori Bianchi May 2018

Gender Discrepancy In Asexual Identity:The Effect Of Hegemonic Gender Norms On Asexual Identification, Tori Bianchi

Scholars Week

How do gender roles and expectations affect individuals identifying as asexual? Why do more women and genderqueer people identify as asexual? What about masculine stereotypes dissuades individuals from identifying as asexual? In this study I investigate how the cultural and societal expectations of different genders, both assigned and actualized, affect the perception and performance of an individual’s sexual identity. In particular I examine ideals of prescribed and hegemonic masculinity and femininity and how those ideals are upheld or broken by an asexual identity, and how those holding diverse gender identities feel their gender identity interacts with their asexual orientation.

Women And Health Care: Exploring The Communication Dynamic Between Women And Their Doctors, Mairin Mccurdy May 2018

Women And Health Care: Exploring The Communication Dynamic Between Women And Their Doctors, Mairin Mccurdy

Scholars Week

This is a qualitative study examining the effects of the communication between patient and doctor on the self-concept of female patients. The researchers will use a combination of the Health Belief Model, which studies the individual constructs and beliefs that one feels and how this affects decisions made about health, and the Spiral of Silence, which explores how minority groups stay silent for fear of retaliation. Through the scope of these theories, the researcher will attempt to understand how insufficient communication on the part of the doctor, both in situations of diagnoses and in general practice, impacts how the female …

Placing Caster Semenya Within And Outside Of Discourse On Sex And Gender In The Space Of International Professional Athletics, Joanna Line Apr 2018

Placing Caster Semenya Within And Outside Of Discourse On Sex And Gender In The Space Of International Professional Athletics, Joanna Line

Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies

World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Caster Semenya’s body has caused a rupture within the space of international professional athletics, which is structured according to a binary conceptualization of sex and gender. This rupture created a space for international discourse about alternative ways in which sex and gender can be defined, and to reimagine the space of international professional athletics, and other binary-bound non-sport spaces, to be more inclusive. Cultural geographer Denis Cosgrove's concept of landscapes and Stuart Hall’s concept of coding and decoding provide a framework for exploring how Caster Semenya’s body has been read and interpreted like a …

Human Development, Human Rights, And The 50th Anniversary Of Populorum Progressio, Ellen Maccarone Nov 2017

Human Development, Human Rights, And The 50th Anniversary Of Populorum Progressio, Ellen Maccarone

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

At the 50th anniversary of the encyclical Populorum Progressio, we have a critical opportunity to bring Paul VI’s insights to the social practice of human rights. The development of peoples discussed by the encyclical isolates areas of significant concern to the Church and humanity more broadly. This, however, is not to say that there are not other issues overlooked in Populorum Progressio that also need to be addressed.

In this paper I argue that the understanding of human development found in Populorum Progressio serves as an important yet sometimes overlooked foundation in Catholic social teaching for the advancement of …

We Just Need To Pee: Bathroom Bills And The Intersection Of Human Rights, Gender, And Race, Lena Tenney Nov 2017

We Just Need To Pee: Bathroom Bills And The Intersection Of Human Rights, Gender, And Race, Lena Tenney

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Although rarely publicly discussed, bathrooms are a fundamental element of everyday life. In fact, the majority of the population does not question their right or ability to access public restroom facilities because they are a mundane aspect of daily routine. However, the recent rise of “bathroom bills” in state legislatures has sparked significant media coverage and highlighted activist movements seeking to guarantee safe, affirming, and legally protected access to bathrooms for people of all gender identities and expressions.

This paper will illustrate that bathroom access is not only a matter of public policy, but also a question of human rights. …

Human Rights And Disability, Lowell Ewert Nov 2017

Human Rights And Disability, Lowell Ewert

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

In every context where racism, poverty, inequality, religious intolerance, or any other form of exploitation is present, persons with disabilities within the category experiencing discrimination are almost always worse off than their non-disabled peers. In this way, disability has the practical impact of magnifying discrimination and multiplying harmful practices. There is even evidence in some places that persons with disabilities have been deliberately targeted with violence. Additionally, sexual violence against disabled women and girls can be especially cruel.

Efforts to combat discriminatory practices that are primarily focused on addressing the concerns of the able-bodied often further exacerbate the general indifference …
