Annual Research Congress for High School and Elementary Teachers, Researchers, and Scholars (ARCHERS)
The 2020 global pandemic made academics realize that online learning is a viable educational delivery mode. However, along with the persistence of schools to craft necessary learning frameworks comes the age-old issue of academic dishonesty. While technology has been seen to be pivotal in instruction, the same has also been used to commit academic misconduct, especially during distance learning. Following Dinneen (2021) and Park (2004), the study explored the level of familiarity of selected students of the different taxonomies of academic dishonesty. Then, through focus group discussions with the students and content subject teachers, the study was able to get …

Real Rap, Does Authenticity Even Matter In Hip Hop?, Amin Allam
Capstone Showcase
Rap and Hip hop has evolved tremendously since its inception. The collective genre has been catapulted to global influence, where in the United States it represents the largest genre based on market share. After reviewing the history of rap music there is a perceived relationship between hip hop and authenticity. To which the question arose of whether hip hop could maintain authenticity in a commercial sphere. To explore this relationship, after reviewing the literature on authenticity, a model of analysis created by Newman and Smith was used to explore 5years worth of data dealing with the Billboard top 100 list. …

Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
It takes time for a department chair to earn their credential to fit into the campus and departmental culture. Beyond experience or seniority, we will explore the diverse factors that determine whether and when a department chair becomes accepted into the dominant group in order to speak up and to be heard, as well as strategies for proactively making it a continuous self-growth process.

Flow: An Ancient Way To Contemporary Worship, Lester Ruth
Flow: An Ancient Way To Contemporary Worship, Lester Ruth
Symposium on Worship Archive
Is there a way to follow the prescribed order of worship from mainline denominational worship resources in a way that feels legitimately and authentically contemporary? That is the question this workshop will try to answer. The source for this answer is ancient, from the earliest centuries of the church. Step by step, we’ll break down the process of rethinking what official orders of worship are calling for so that pastors and worship leaders can plan and lead a Word and Table order that feels genuinely contemporary. This workshop will cast a new, but classic understanding of traditional worship as well …
The Effect Of Accepting External Influence On Emotional Labor: A Study On White-Collar Workers In Turkey, Buket Akdol, Gamze Guzin Kazakoglu
The Effect Of Accepting External Influence On Emotional Labor: A Study On White-Collar Workers In Turkey, Buket Akdol, Gamze Guzin Kazakoglu
UBT International Conference
It was many years after Industrial Revolution that the threat child labor and working under inhumanitarian conditions poses as physical burden to laborers and the severity of the fact that they had to work for many hours under such ardous conditions were realized. However, as industry developed and the concept of being a laborer evolved into a task that requires emotional assets of laborers other than physical burden as well, the “emotional labor” of workers was started to be investigated as a concept. First brought up by American sociologist Arlie Hochschild in 1979 in her book “The Managed Heart” that …

ISCCL Scientific Symposia and Annual General Meetings // Symposiums scientifiques et assemblées générales annuelles de l'ISCCL // Simposios científicos yy las Asambleas Generales Anuales
China is an active player in the international arena of intangible cultural heritage (ICH). While China is transforming from an agricultural country to an industrial country, rural heritage, either tangible or intangible, is facing tremendous challenges and opportunities. Among Chinese provinces, Yunnan in Southwest of China can be regarded as the best case to investigate the issues of protection, use and transmission of rural heritage as Yunnan is a unique province of China because of its ethnic cultural diversity and geographic diversity. Based on literary studies and fieldworks, this paper illustrates history, cases, theories and practices in the protection and …
Who’S Evaluating The Evaluators? Cognitive Biases, Fake News, And Information Literacy, Jon C. Pope, Kim Becnel
Who’S Evaluating The Evaluators? Cognitive Biases, Fake News, And Information Literacy, Jon C. Pope, Kim Becnel
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
In response to the increased attention to “fake news” and “alternative facts” as information challenges in the wake of the recent election cycle, librarians and educators have dramatically stepped up efforts to cultivate basic information literacy skills, especially prioritizing the careful evaluation of online sources of information. While these critical source evaluation skills are an essential component of functional information literacy, the recent emphasis on them is predicated on a model of communication that assumes that the readers of these online sources are capable—and desirous—of making informed, objective judgments about the credibility of an external information source. Rhetorical theories, however, …

Experiencing ‘Otherness’ In Ethnic-Themed Restaurants, Dr. Shengnan Zhao, Dr. Deepak Chabra, Dr. Woojin Lee, Karla Scott, Erin Johnson
Travel and Tourism Research Association: Advancing Tourism Research Globally
Ethnic-themed restaurants are one of the most powerful influential socializing agents of foreign cultures. The most common reference point for those seeking enriching leisurely cultural experience is object authenticity. Yet little research has been done on authenticity in eatertainment experiences from both supply and demand perspectives. This paper attempts to fill the lacuna through exploring how ethnic-themed restaurant owners/managers use markers to create a genuine version of their food and cook in the virtual cyber world and how patrons project authenticity to their experiences on the blogosphere. The preliminary results indicate that patrons continue to place emphasis on experiencing the …
Authenticity In Voltourism: A Motive For A Decommodified Form Of Tourism, Thabit Alomari
Authenticity In Voltourism: A Motive For A Decommodified Form Of Tourism, Thabit Alomari
Travel and Tourism Research Association: Advancing Tourism Research Globally
Theoretical and practical hegemony characterize varied forms of tourism. Tourism, the service-based product, has various commoditised subsidiaries in our neoliberal era. In the Society of the Spectacle, Debord portrays tourism akin to a symbol of commodification “a by-product of the circulation of commodities” (Debord 1994). A traditional form of tourism such as mass tourism is a clear model of commoditized tourism. Volunteer tourism is one of the fastest growing significant forms of alternative tourism nowadays (Wearing 2001). This paper aims to abstract and clarify the role of authenticity, the foremost motivation, in volunteer travel structure. The study explores the motives …
Authenticity In Music Performance: Evidence From The Singer-Songwriter Community, Jon Littlefield
Authenticity In Music Performance: Evidence From The Singer-Songwriter Community, Jon Littlefield
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
Experiencing music provides a unique lens to study identity. The alienation resulting from increased technological mediation in both music production and consumption might drive consumption (Potter 2010), hence authenticity may be an appealing positioning strategy for marketers. Singer-songwriters, for example, write and perform their own music with minimal technological interference. This represents a direct connection with the musician that we characterize as more historically authentic (Thornton 1996), however this characterization is not universal. In this paper, I seek to gather insight into the myriad expressions of authenticity within the music consumption environment by detailing a study of performance musicians.

Selling the course experience to future students has been corporatised across the Higher Education sector. At many universities marketing and sales specialists, such as ECU’s Student Recruitment Team, rather than academic staff, field prospective student enquiries. Representing courses authentically is crucial to matching future students with an appropriate course experience and career, as well is managing future students’ expectations. A challenge for academics is communicating the course/career experience to university sales agents (recruiters). A challenge for recruiters is conveying an authentic course experience to future students when they have not taken a course themselves. This paper selects two ECU courses, …

The Relationship Between Types Of Tourist And Destination Authenticity, Hyojin Kim, Howook Chang, Chang Huh
The Relationship Between Types Of Tourist And Destination Authenticity, Hyojin Kim, Howook Chang, Chang Huh
Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism
Since the 1960s and 1970s, the issues of both types of tourist and authenticity in tourism have been popular topics among tourism academics. However, their socio-cultural approaches and contributions have been limited to the theoretical stage. These arguments need to move to the next level of debate for tourism literature. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationships between the types of tourist and authenticity in tourism based on a summary of three decades of tourism literature. The findings of the study are expected to reveal a new approach to tourism destination segmentation supported by strong theoretical foundations.

Developing A Theoretical Framework For Understanding (Staged) Authentic Retail Settings In Relation To The Current Experience Economy., Bie Plevoets, Ann Petermans, Koenraad Van Cleempoel
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In the current experience economy, some retailers and retail designers aim at triggering customer experiences by associating the retail store’s design with ‘authenticity’. The notion of authenticity, however, is complex and layered and has been studied in several scientific disciplines. But within retail design, only limited research on authenticity is available. This paper aims to clarify the complex concept of authenticity in relation to retail design. Retail design as part of interior architecture is an emerging discipline. By establishing its theoretical basis, authors mostly rely on the knowledge of background disciplines; as in this paper, where we look at theories …

Empowering The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: Towards An Authentic Practice, Carolin Kreber
SoTL Commons Conference
In this presentation my aim is to look at the different kinds of questions that can be asked as part of the scholarship of teaching and learning and the different types of knowledge these questions might generate. I will explore and unpack the meaning of the now common notion of ‘SoTL research’ and compare it to an alternative or complementary notion of scholarship, that of ‘SoTL practice’. The latter I will argue is not just characterized by context-specific inquiries into the effectiveness of certain teaching strategies in bringing about particular learning outcomes but by questions that are directed at values …
