Anthony Eden, The Egypt Committee, And The Politics Of Prestige During The Suez Crisis, Alexander Shelby Dec 2006

Anthony Eden, The Egypt Committee, And The Politics Of Prestige During The Suez Crisis, Alexander Shelby

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The impact of the Gamal Abdul Nasser's nationalization of the Suez Canal on Anthony Eden's policy making during the Suez Crisis is the bases of this research. Using data from the Cabinet records of Eden's Egypt Committee, this research will demonstrate that Eden and the Egypt Committee acted irrationally during the Suez Crisis and by doing so created a schism in the Atlantic Alliance. This rift would force President Dwight Eisenhower to side with the Soviet Union against Britain to resolve the conflict. The effects of the crisis caused the British to lose their prestige as a world power and …

Analysis Of Two Neighboring Miocene Paleo-Turbidite Systems In A Complex Deep-Water Environment: Implications For Biostratigraphic Techniques Used In Gulf Of Mexico Petroleum Exploration Studies, Andrew Tipton Dec 2006

Analysis Of Two Neighboring Miocene Paleo-Turbidite Systems In A Complex Deep-Water Environment: Implications For Biostratigraphic Techniques Used In Gulf Of Mexico Petroleum Exploration Studies, Andrew Tipton

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Biostratigraphic techniques are commonly used in shallow environments of the Gulf of Mexico basin for depositional history modeling in petroleum exploration applications. Extending these interpretations to deep-water settings, where the structural and depositional history is more complex, is problematic. A localized study area was used for a case-analysis of a typically complex deep-water study area. A dataset of seismic, well-log, and biostratigraphic information was used to: (a) assess accuracy of the biostratigraphic interpretations produced by Fillon (2005), (b) determine specific pitfalls of micropaleontology as a tool in this environment, and (c) provide guidelines for the application of biostratigraphic data in …

Development Of An Image Noise Estimation Method And A Sub-Imaging Based Wiener Method, Eric F. Smith Dec 2006

Development Of An Image Noise Estimation Method And A Sub-Imaging Based Wiener Method, Eric F. Smith

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This research consists of three parts. The first part is an investigation of several popular image restoration techniques. The techniques are used to restore 2-D image data, f(x, y), that has been blurred by a known point spread function (PSF), b(x, y) and corrupted by an unknown amount of noise, n(x, y). Several sample images are restored using all of the techniques. Of the methods investigated the one which produces the best restoration results was determined to be the Wiener deconvolution method. The determination of the best method is based on the quality of the restored image and the required …

Bloom Filters For Filesystem Forensics, Rachel Bourg Dec 2006

Bloom Filters For Filesystem Forensics, Rachel Bourg

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Digital forensics investigations become more time consuming as the amount of data to be investigated grows. Secular growth trends between hard drive and memory capacity just exacerbate the problem. Bloom filters are space-efficient, probabilistic data structures that can represent data sets with quantifiable false positive rates that have the potential to alleviate the problem by reducing space requirements. We provide a framework using Bloom filters to allow fine-grained content identification to detect similarity, instead of equality. We also provide a method to compare filters directly and a statistical means of interpreting the results. We developed a tool--md5bloom--that uses Bloom filters …

An Empirical Analysis Of Commercial Bank Profitability In Financially Liberalized Markets, James Nguyen Dec 2006

An Empirical Analysis Of Commercial Bank Profitability In Financially Liberalized Markets, James Nguyen

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Chapter 1 of the dissertation investigates the determinants of bank interest margin (NIM) and noninterest income (NII) using a system estimation approach for all commercial banks in a group of 28 financially liberalized countries during the period between 1997 and 2004. The empirical results generally suggest that NIM is directly influenced by operating costs, risk aversion, credit risk, the interaction between interest rate risk and bank risk, bank size, volume of credit, and NII. NIM is negatively related to interest rate risk and capital adequacy. NII is found to correlate positively with NIM, total assets, credit risk, liquidity risk, overhead …

White Faculty At Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Kimya Dawson-Smith

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the socialization process of White faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Specifically, this qualitative study identified influences and barriers in the socialization process of White tenure-line faculty at two HBCUs. Through the participants shared experiences, both positive and negative themes emerged relative to their perceptions of the socialization process. The positive themes were: the provision of clear institutional values and expectations through colleagues and institutional documentation, as well as establishing and maintaining collegial relationships, particularly with senior faculty members. On the other hand, the participants identified the absence of an …

Coping With Stress In Children, Tolonda Age Dec 2006

Coping With Stress In Children, Tolonda Age

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Unique stressors can prompt child adjustment difficulties. Coping strategies and emotion regulation that impact the adjustment of children in general and military family children were investigated. Eighty children, 36 with deployed parents, their parents and teachers participated. All experienced stress related to hurricane Katrina. Correlational analyses indicate that children with more hurricane-related losses or moves, use some coping strategies less often; hurricane-related child distress is related to lower maternal support; and parental hurricane-related distress is associated with high levels of child externalizing problems. When dealing with general stressors, some coping strategies were positively associated with child internalizing problems. Analyses indicate …

Usability Studies With Virtual And Traditional Computer Aided Design Environments, Syed Adeel Ahmed

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

For both the CAVETM and the adaptable technology possessed by the University of New Orleans, crystal eye glasses are used to produce a stereoscopic view, and an ascension flock of birds tracking system is employed for tracking of the user's head position and position of a wand in 3D space. It is argued that with these immersive technologies along the use of gestures and hand movements should provide a more natural interface with the immersive virtual environment. This allows a more rapid and efficient set of actions to recognize geometry, interaction with a spatial environment, the ability to find errors, …

Acoustic Seabed And Target Classification Using Fractional Fourier Transform And Time-Frequency Transform Techniques, Madalina Barbu Dec 2006

Acoustic Seabed And Target Classification Using Fractional Fourier Transform And Time-Frequency Transform Techniques, Madalina Barbu

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

An approach for processing sonar signals with the ultimate goal of ocean bottom sediment classification and underwater buried target classification is presented in this dissertation. Work reported for sediment classification is based on sonar data collected by one of the AN/AQS-20's sonars. Synthetic data, simulating data acquired by parametric sonar, is employed for target classification. The technique is based on the Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT), which is better suited for sonar applications because FrFT uses linear chirps as basis functions. In the first stage of the algorithm, FrFT requires finding the optimum order of the transform that can be estimated …

Nanocrystalline Transition Metal Ferrites Synthesis, Characterization And Surface Functionalization, Daniela Caruntu Dec 2006

Nanocrystalline Transition Metal Ferrites Synthesis, Characterization And Surface Functionalization, Daniela Caruntu

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a new synthetic methodology for the high yield synthesis of spineltype transition metal ferrite nanoparticles has been developed. This approach is based on the complexation of the first-row transition metal cations with diethylene glycol (DEG) followed by the hydrolysis of the resulting chelate iron alkoxide complexes in the presence of an alkaline hydroxide. Due to the passivation of their surfaces with DEG molecules, the as-prepared nanoparticles are stable against agglomeration and can be easily dispersed in polar protic solvents (water, alcohols, etc.). Alternatively, a postsynthesis passivation with carboxylate ions can render the iron oxide nanocrystals highly dispersible …

Trade Relations Between Southern U.S. Cities And Latin America: A Study Of How The Port Cities New Orleans, Houston, And Miami Fare Against One Another Amid Increasing Competition For Trade With Latin America, Bethany Comboy

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Globalization has affected decentralization and greater centralized control and management within governments traditionally unconstrained by international change, city governments. City governments must be increasingly active internationally to survive in a politically decentralized global environment, especially in international trade. Trade is important to cities because it affects growth, jobs and standard of living among other contributors to local economies. The effects of globalization at the local level are manifested in three Southern U.S. cities with business-generating ports linked to Latin American and world markets: New Orleans, Houston, and Miami. This comparative case study considers the competition among New Orleans, Houston and …

Government Ownership, Firm Value And Choice Of Seo Methods--- Evidence From Privatized Chinese Soes, Ohannes Paskelian Dec 2006

Government Ownership, Firm Value And Choice Of Seo Methods--- Evidence From Privatized Chinese Soes, Ohannes Paskelian

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In 1991, the Chinese government started the privatization process. A distinguishing feature of this privatization process is the presence of the government as a major shareholder in the privatized SOEs which creates a unique ownership structure that affects the firm performance, and, in turns its choice of equity issuing method. This dissertation investigates the relation between ownership structure, firm value, and the choice of equity offering method of the Chinese semi-privatized former state-owned enterprises. The dissertation consists of two essays. The first essay examines this relationship during the period 1993-1998 when the Chinese stock exchanges were at the infancy stage. …

Clustering Of Leukemia Patients Via Gene Expression Data Analysis, Zhiyu Zhao Dec 2006

Clustering Of Leukemia Patients Via Gene Expression Data Analysis, Zhiyu Zhao

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to cluster some leukemia patients described by gene expression data, and discover the most discriminating a few genes that are responsible for the clustering. A combined approach of Principal Direction Divisive Partitioning and bisect K-means algorithms is applied to the clustering of the selected leukemia dataset, and both unsupervised and supervised methods are considered in order to get the optimal results. As shown by the experimental results and the predefined reference, the combination of PDDP and bisect K-means successfully clusters the leukemia patients, and efficiently discovers some significant genes that can serve as the discriminator of the …

Purification Of Global Regulator, Spx, And Rna Polymerase From Staphylococcus Aureus For Use In In Vitro Transcription Of Redox Genes, Jane Mcbride Dec 2006

Purification Of Global Regulator, Spx, And Rna Polymerase From Staphylococcus Aureus For Use In In Vitro Transcription Of Redox Genes, Jane Mcbride

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Spx is a global regulator discovered in Bacillus subtilis to suppress basal growth and development processes and activate transcription of genes involved in thiol homeostasis when a cell encounters oxidative stress. Its activity relies on reversible thiol-disulfide bond formation and binding RNA polymerase rather than DNA. The discovery that Staphylococcus aureus global virulence regulator, SarA, is more active upon cysteine reduction suggests that redox response could mediate virulence in this important human pathogen. We describe the cloning of spx from S. aureus strain RN6390, overexpression in Escherichia coli, and purification of native protein. Antibodies against Spx were raised for western …

A Parallel Architecture For Analog-To-Digital Conversion With Improved Dynamic Range, Brandy Sausse Dec 2006

A Parallel Architecture For Analog-To-Digital Conversion With Improved Dynamic Range, Brandy Sausse

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a parallel architecture for Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) is developed to increase the system dynamic range. The proposed architecture is a critical component for a Continuous Wave Stepped Frequency (CWSF) radar system. Existing Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components are inadequate to meet the demands of a high sample rate and a high dynamic range specification. The proposed parallel architecture meets the design criteria by extending the upper voltage limit of high sample rate converters. Extensive simulation study verifies that the desired high sample rate and increased resolution is achieved.

Protecting Mobile Ad Hoc Networks From Spurious Cts Attacks 'Carrier Sensing Based Deferral Mechanism', Sreekanth Pagadala Dec 2006

Protecting Mobile Ad Hoc Networks From Spurious Cts Attacks 'Carrier Sensing Based Deferral Mechanism', Sreekanth Pagadala

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Request-To-Send (RTS)/Clear-To-Send (CTS) mechanism is used to combat Hidden/Exposed node problems in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). The popular implementation of the RTS/CTS mechanism may lead to virtual blocking of the wireless medium. Problem arises if a malicious node randomly sends out a large number of spurious CTS frames in order to falsely block regular nodes in its neighborhood. Such an attack is termed as spurious CTS attack. In this thesis, we investigate the effects of such spurious CTS attacks and propose a solution to mitigate the problem. Our proposed solution, Carrier Sensing based Deferral (CSD) mechanism, asks nodes …

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This is a story about a man who revenge dates women for hire because he thinks women are only out to hurt men. Bryce has something of an allergic reaction anytime he tries to talk to a woman unless it is under a completely false pretense, in which case he is a woman's worst nightmare: A charming, handsome, heartbreaker. His world gets turned upside down when Bryce, despite his affliction, falls in love with a woman and must undergo painful subterfuge techniques just to be around her. Can a relationship built on pain, survive? Will Bryce give up what he …

Detecting Routing Misbehavior In Mobile Ad Hoc Network, Kejun Liu Dec 2006

Detecting Routing Misbehavior In Mobile Ad Hoc Network, Kejun Liu

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Routing misbehavior in MANETs (Mobile Ad Hoc Networks) is studied in this thesis. In general, routing protocols for MANETs are designed based on the assumption that all par- ticipating nodes are fully cooperative. However, due to the open structure and scarcely available battery-based energy, node misbehaviors may exist. One such routing misbehavior is that some selfish nodes will participate in the route discovery and maintenance processes but refuse to forward data packets. Therefore, we propose the 2ACK scheme that serves as an add-on technique for routing schemes to detect routing misbehavior and to mitigate their adverse effect. The main idea …

Digital Dissection Of Radiographs, Using The Early Cretaceous Bird Confuciusornis And Photoshop Cs2tm, Sirelious White Dec 2006

Digital Dissection Of Radiographs, Using The Early Cretaceous Bird Confuciusornis And Photoshop Cs2tm, Sirelious White

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the past, radiographs (x-ray "shadowgraphs") have been used by paleontologists as ways to identify and capture bone images. Primarily, this was done to examine the skeletal elements without having to remove the surrounding matrix. Radiographs have so much three-dimensional information compressed onto a two-dimension image that it is often impossible to understand the entire skeleton. Obviously, it would be desirable to strip away the readily interpretable skeleton elements and examine those less well understood. An initial set of experiments were performed on a particular section of a radiograph of Confuciusornis sanctus, as a subject, while utilizing Photoshop CS2TM to …

A Study Of Conditional Volatilities In Financial Markets Using Generalized Conditional Heteroscedasticity Jump Models, Babatunde Olatunji Odusami Dec 2006

A Study Of Conditional Volatilities In Financial Markets Using Generalized Conditional Heteroscedasticity Jump Models, Babatunde Olatunji Odusami

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this manuscript, I investigate the time-varying volatilities and co-volatilities in the fixed income and equities market using jump augmented stochastic volatility models. The results highlights that the fact that jumps are inherent in financial markets and have implications for the dynamics of volatilities and co-volatilities of financial assets over time. Jump augmented models provide a superior description of instantaneous market conditions and a promising avenue for future research in areas of asset pricing, portfolio selection, and risk management.

Möbius: For Orchestra , Anthony Dominic-Paul Cipolone Dec 2006

Möbius: For Orchestra , Anthony Dominic-Paul Cipolone

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Möbius: for Orchestra attempts to explore an alternative use of the material that typically appears in the development section of a piece composed in sonata form. By using the modified themes in the recapitulation rather than disregarding them entirely, the A-B-A' form of the basic sonata becomes more of an A-B-(A'+B'). Much like the mathematical function this piece is named after – a loop whose ending is never identical to its beginning and whose mirror-image lacks symmetry – the listener is brought to a new ending with familiar, non-repeated material. Many times throughout the piece, the listener will hear up …

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study is an informative discussion on the history behind Walt Disney's film, Song of the South, based on the Uncle Remus tales originally written by Joel Chandler Harris, which will be addressed in Chapter One. Chapter Two elaborates on the methods within the vehicles of two distinct media versions in two different time periods as the problematic source of perception. Chapter Three relates why this is due to cultural sensitivities pertaining to the film and the suggested media guidelines by minority organizations that have gained power since the Civil Rights movement. Chapter Four discusses the historical data showing the …
