By using content analysis techniques to compare social construction of knowledge in online dialogues to concept maps generated to synthesize this knowledge construction, this study showed that concept maps are an effective tool to synthesize knowledge construction in online conferences. This finding was also supported by self-reported data in a moderator survey. Concept maps were also considered an effective tool for organizing information which indicates that they can be utilized as a knowledge management and preservation tool in online conferences. All students perceived that the Cmap tool software could be used as a tool to foster online collaborative learning in …

Designing The Social Environment For Online Learning: The Role Of Social Presence, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena Jan 2004

Designing The Social Environment For Online Learning: The Role Of Social Presence, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

A major challenge to designing online learning is the development of appropriate means to facilitate the social environment that is critical for higher-order learning in many disciplines. In many online learning designs, the majority of resources are channeled to web interface design and technology, while little or no resources are devoted to facilitating the teaching and learning process, the negotiation of meaning and the validation of knowledge among peers and instructors that depends on a conducive socio-cultural environment and adequate learner support. This paper seeks to address this issue by examining one factor, social presence that has been shown to …

Methods For Evaluating Interface Design For Online Learning Environments, Constance A. Lowe, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Designing online learning environments poses many challenges. One critical issue is the design of appropriate user interfaces so that the interface does not become a barrier to the learning process. The interface of a web site may be described as the sum of the visible (and/or audible) elements which convey to a user what functions and resources are available at the site and provide access to, or control over, those functions and resources. The interface is a key element of usability, where usability means the ease or difficulty with which the user can complete the intended tasks. Following a brief …

The Freshman Year Experience movement has created an excellent opportunity for academic library outreach. Its values, which include collaboration among various campus units charged with supporting student success and a focus on student mastery of key academic skills, correspond well with the objective of many college and university libraries: to become a more central part of the institution's educational mission. This chapter provides a discussion of academic library outreach to one of the movement's most significant components, the freshman course. The aim is to provide an overview of historic and contemporary trends in postsecondary freshman programming and corresponding library outreach …

Virtual Work And Leadership: The Role Of The Internet, Complexity, Creativity, And Knowledge Workers, Johann Van Reenen

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This chapter presents the case for strong leadership to develop an internationally distributed virtual workforce. It is a speculative approach to how work and workers may behave in a future where most of their work and interactions will be virtual and disconnected from their physical location. The lessons that can be learned from the natural world are explored especially from complexity theories. Examples are provided of natural systems in action and the insights others have drawn from these theories and how this may inform decision-making, risk-taking and the management of virtual workers. The impact of the Internet on knowledge creation …

Consortia Vs Reform: Creating Congruence, Margaret Landesman, Johann Van Reenen

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The inability of research libraries to offer the collections their users desire has become more pronounced each year. In response, libraries have moved in two directions: the rapidly growing consortial movement and the movement to advocate and support reforms in scholarly communication. However, if libraries do not pay careful attention, these two directions may, at least partially, cancel one another out.

No library or information service can stand aloof from the current developments (legal, technological, and organizational) in scholarly publishing. I will be describing my personal actions to influence beneficial change, as well as those of the various groups I am involved with. This may be useful to chapter members and, I hope, stimulate more ideas for effecting changes in the electronic publishing environment before it, too, is usurped by for-profit publishers.

Librarians At Work: Are We As Satisfied As Other American Workers?, Johann Van Reenen

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

For almost three decades, libraries have experienced rapid change, first in behind-the-scenes technical processes, then gradually everywhere. This allowed enhanced services to our customers and new opportunities for library workers. Did it make us happier workers, or at least as happy as the general American worker? Many job satisfaction surveys has been reported and analyzed in the library literature. These were reviewed for overall satisfaction indicators. Permission was obtained from Inc./Gallup to administer six of their 34 questions verbatim to library groups. The results are described in this article.

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

A sub-committee of the Senate Library Committee of UBC examined the relationship between serials and electronic technology, and the principles, which should underlie holding or accessing journals and producing electronic publications locally. The work was done during the summer of 1994 and a report published by the end of that year. This article is based on my experience working on this task group and do not mirror the final report.. This was also presented — in part — at an EBSCO\u2122 Executive Seminar in August 1994. The information has been updated since the session where necessary. Recommendations have been made …

Proline's Function In Cold Stress And Osmoregulation In Carrot Tissue Culture Suspensions, Jackie Shane

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Wild type and high free proline suspension-cultured carrot cell lines were used to determine whether proline influences cold tolerance. In addition, various stressful environments were imposed on the suspensions by varying media ingredients, such as the addition of mannitol and absicisic acid (ABA), in an effort to induce proline production. Results showed that an optimum concentration of proline hardened the control lines and acted as a growth stimulant under normal growth conditions. When both lines were grown at 3 C the high proline mutant line C-63, proved to be the hardiest. When grown at room temperature, C-63 was actually the …
