Gentrification, Neighborhood Change, And Crime Across Milwaukee, Hannah Smith

Data from 247 census tracts and 592 block groups in Milwaukee, Wisconsin were analyzed to determine the extent of gentrification across Milwaukee and the effects of neighborhood change on both property and violent crime rates. The data are from 2010 and 2018 and captures the city’s transformation over the majority of the past decade. Using frequency analyses, OLS regression, spatial lag regression and spatial error regression models, the relationships between gentrification, neighborhood change and crime are assessed. Similar to other quantitative research findings, this paper found very little evidence of gentrification in Milwaukee from 2010 to 2018. Regarding the effect …

Eminent domain is generally treated by legal geographers as a tool of the state. This thesis applies legal and feminist geographies to the case of the Atlantic Yards development in Brooklyn so as to reframe eminent domain as a spatio-legal intervention complicating traditional notions of scale and power.

Under the paving stones, the beach investigates the human labor that goes into sustaining life inside of a luxury condominium on Brooklyn’s newly redeveloped East River waterfront. This study is an exploration of power structures governing the redevelopment of Honolulu’s Kaka‘ako neighborhood. Through participant observation of three initiatives that utilize creative placemaking as a tool for asserting the right to the city, this thesis offers active strategies of opposition to the commodification of culture by developers.

This thesis explores the gentrification process in Church Hill, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Richmond, Virginia. After World War II, Richmond residents knew Church Hill mostly for its crime rate and dilapidated housing. The white, middle-class flight to the suburbs left the remaining residents, mostly African American, to experience decades of disinvestment. Church Hill was considered a neighborhood to avoid for much of the late twentieth century. Yet, Church Hill is currently one of the most desired neighborhoods in Richmond, particularly for young professionals.
