Solution To Eigenvalue Problems Of Antisymmetric Cross-Ply And Antisymmetric Angle-Ply Laminated Plates Using Affine Transformations, Zaffir A. Chaudry Dec 1984

Solution To Eigenvalue Problems Of Antisymmetric Cross-Ply And Antisymmetric Angle-Ply Laminated Plates Using Affine Transformations, Zaffir A. Chaudry

Theses and Dissertations

Using affine transformations and suitably recasting the buckling vibration differential equations, the eigenvalue problem of anti-symmetric cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminated rectangular plates has been reduced to a function of two strong material constants, the generalized rigidity ratio, whose range is in the closed interval from 0 to 1, and the ratio of principal lamina stiffness. With the reduction in number of constants an exhaustive parameter study of buckling and vibration solution trends, is possible. The buckling coefficients decrease with decreasing value of generalized rigidity ratio for both antisymmetric cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminates. For a given aspect ratio, and …

A Study Of Selected Style And Content Variables In The Drawing Of Depressed And Nondepressed Adults, Catherine F.S. Dawson

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated differences between the drawings of depressed and nondelpressed adults. A procedure for obtaining objective scbres for structural and content variables was developed. Subjects were patients of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona v.rho were high and low scorers on the Beck Depression Inventory. Based on the research of Wadeson (1980) and Wright and McIntyre (1982) the following differences between the drawings of depressed and nondepressed subjects were hypothesized: the drawings of depressed subjects would have less color, more empty space, smaller forms, more missing details, and fewer extra details than those of nondepressed subjects. Based …

The Omnibus Bill Of 1889: Stathood For Dakota Territory, Julie Marvyl Andresen Koch Dec 1984

The Omnibus Bill Of 1889: Stathood For Dakota Territory, Julie Marvyl Andresen Koch

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the Statehood history of the present-day states of North and South Dakota. They were part of the Territory of Dakota during the years of 1861-1889, their ultimate division occurring only after a long and bitter eighteen-year struggle.

The prime objective of this thesis is to pinpoint precisely the reasons why statehood for the Dakotas took so many years. It seeks to determine who supported and who opposed admission, both in Dakota Territory and in the United States Congress, and investigates the reasons admission was so long delayed. Specific investigation of the Fiftieth Congress, 1888-1889, is necessary because …

Heuristics, Schemas And Biased Social Judgement: An Explanation Of The Reports Of The Sources Of Self-Knowledge, David L. Nash Dec 1984

Heuristics, Schemas And Biased Social Judgement: An Explanation Of The Reports Of The Sources Of Self-Knowledge, David L. Nash

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated subjects' reports of the sources of self-knowlege in light of the growing literature about the shortcomings of social judgment. The hypothesis of this study was the subjects' tendency to report self-observation at the expense of feedback and social comparison as the best source of self-knowledge is based on an implicit evaluation bias similar to Schlenker's (1980) notion of "self-projection" and Jellison and Greens' (1981) "norm of internality". It was predicted that subjects' intuitive notions about the sources are such that self-observation is seen as a generally "better" method of self-knowledge than feedback which, in turn, is better …

Study Of Longitudinal Landing Flying Qualities Evaluation Using Pilot Model Theory, Eric D. Didomenico Dec 1984

Study Of Longitudinal Landing Flying Qualities Evaluation Using Pilot Model Theory, Eric D. Didomenico

Theses and Dissertations

Control Anticipation Parameter (CAP), used in MIL-SPEC-8785C as a longitudinal handling qualities criterion does not adequately distinguish between different flight phases. Recent flight test data from the Landing Approach Higher Order Systems (LAHOS) study further indicate the inadequacy of the second order approximations for higher order longitudinal landing flying qualities. Nine Aircraft that fall within the Level 1 boundary reveal pilot ratings ranging from 1.5 to 10 (Cooper/Harper). These nine aircraft are studied by combining their longitudinal dynamics with pilot modelling to examine a better method of landing flying quality prediction and evaluation. Pilot model theory (cross-over pilot model) is …

Influence Of Physically Attractive People On Consumers In Advertising, Rick W. Caylor Dec 1984

Influence Of Physically Attractive People On Consumers In Advertising, Rick W. Caylor

Theses and Dissertations

When meeting another person for the first time, the most prominent factor in formulating an impression is the person's physical attractiveness. It has been stated that "A person's physical appearance, along with his sexual identity, is the personal characteristic most obvious and accessible to others in the social interaction" (Dion, Berscheid, and Walster 1972). There are numerous studies in this area and they will be examined and analyzed with respect to their immediate and long-term implications within the marketing and advertising arenas of the business world.

Ormsby Macknight Mitchel And The Railroad: A Study Of The Significance Of Lines Of Communications In The Civil War, 1861-1862, Michael Robert Terry

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes a minor campaign of the American Civil War, but one which illustrates the importance of the railroad, as a line of communications, to strategy. In the Spring of 1862, the Union Army in the west concentrated at Pittsburg Landing, in Tennessee, preparatory to an advance south on Corinth, Mississippi. General Ormsby Macknight Mitchel, in command of the Third Division of the Army of the Ohio, was given the defensive duty of safeguarding the Federal left, which included Middle Tennessee, against any Confederate threat from Chattanooga. Instead, Mitchel advanced to and captured Huntsville, Alabama.

This action provided several …

Adult Age Differences In Recall And Reading Times For Prose, Dee Rene Ramsel Dec 1984

Adult Age Differences In Recall And Reading Times For Prose, Dee Rene Ramsel

Theses and Dissertations

One strategy used by good college-age readers is to spend additional time viewing or reading information which is relevant to their goals or purpose in reading. Additional viewing time of goal-relevant information then presumably leads to superior retention of this information, at the expense of information which is irrelevant to the reader's goals. One way to detect different strategies used by younger and older readers is to measure how much viewing time readers allot to goal-relevant information and how much of this information is recalled. Relevant information can be designated as that material which contains answers to previously-memorized questions or …

The Structure Of Reflexive Clauses In Michif: A Relational Grammar Approach, Larry Lee Lovell Dec 1984

The Structure Of Reflexive Clauses In Michif: A Relational Grammar Approach, Larry Lee Lovell

Theses and Dissertations

Work in Relational Grammar has made possible the characterization of such notions as 'passive' and 'reflexive' in terms of grammatical relations and relational changes. More recent work in Italian has revealed evidence supporting the notions of retroherent advancement and cancellation.

This study examines reflexive clauses in Michif, a language with Algonquian verb morphology. It shows (1) that the conditions for the occurrence of the reflexive morpheme and the passive morpheme may be formulated simply using concepts available in RG, (2) that the structure of reflexive Passive clauses involves retroherent advancement, and (3) that there exist initially unaccusative clauses in Michif …

Measurement Of Air Force Fire Department Productivity: An Evaluation Of Efficiency/Effectiveness, Timothy A. Byers, Susanne M. Waylette

Theses and Dissertations

This research was sponsored to develop a method of evaluating the productivity of Air Force Fire Departments. Using the tasks developed by the Fire Department Workshop, input and output measures were defined and used in a new model of efficiency called Constrained Facet Analysis (CFA). The advantage of this methodology over others considered was that it can simultaneously evaluate multiple inputs and multiple outputs using empirical data with no a priori weighting. The results of the analysis provided an efficiency rating for each fire department and information about marginal rates of substitution and marginal rates of productivity for inefficient units …

The apparatus used resembles an oil-well with a casing (outer tube) of 6.5 inch inside diameter, and it stood eight feet high. Three different sizes of replace able tubing (inner tube), ranging in outside diameter from 2.38 to 4.49 inches, were used to investigate the effect of annular diameters on void fraction. Superficial gas veloci ty, which is the single most important variable in determin ing void fraction, was varied from 0.015 to 0.60 ft/sec. The column temperature …

Reading Ability And Perception, Christopher J. Revis Aug 1984

Reading Ability And Perception, Christopher J. Revis

Theses and Dissertations

Skilled reading can be partly understood as a set- of interrelated component processes (Perfetti & Lesgold, 1979). The efficiency with which any one of these component pro cesses operates could limit or improve the efficient opera tion of the other component processes. However, there is some controversy over which of these component processes are important in showing differences in overall reading ability. The processes of interest in this study are those at the perceptual level. The purpose of the existing study was to examine the relationship between perceptual processes involved in reading and individual differences in reading ability among college …
