The Effects Of Chronic Anaerobic Infection On Atherosclerosis In Rabbits, Janet Smitheran Bissell
The Effects Of Chronic Anaerobic Infection On Atherosclerosis In Rabbits, Janet Smitheran Bissell
Theses and Dissertations
Arterial disease is virtually a universal entity in man. Some cultures, such as the African Bantus have very little in the way of vascular lesions, while in the United States and other industrialized nations atherosclerosis affects a large segment of the population. With this in mind it is not hard to understand why ischemia, or arteriosclerotic heart disease, is second only to cardiovascular diseases in general as the major cause of death in the United States (4, 42).
Ruffer (112) noted the presence of arterial lesions in Egyptian mummies dating back 3,400 years. The presence of atherosclerotic lesions has also …
Prostaglandin Synthesis In The Feline Adrenal Cortex, Suzanne Gale Laychock
Prostaglandin Synthesis In The Feline Adrenal Cortex, Suzanne Gale Laychock
Theses and Dissertations
Studies were carried out on the feline adrenal gland to ascertain the role of prostaglandins in the mechanism of action of ACTH. Using tritiated arachidonic acid as a prostaglandin (PG) precursor , it was demonstrated by column and thin layer chromatography techniques that isolated trypsinized adrenocortical cells possess an active PG synthetase capable of synthesizing radiolabeled PGE, PGF, and PGA/B-like substances. Concentrations of ACTH (125 - 250 μU) which stimulate steroidogenesis enhanced the conversion of radiolabeled arachidonic acid to PGE, PGF and the PGA/B products extracted from cortical cells and incubation media.
PG biosynthesis by isolated cortical cells was …
Metastatic Patterns And Functional Disability In Disseminated Breast Carcinoma, Stephen Adam Gudas
Metastatic Patterns And Functional Disability In Disseminated Breast Carcinoma, Stephen Adam Gudas
Theses and Dissertations
Thirty female outpatients with metastatic breast carcinoma were evaluated using two operational models constructed for the purpose of assessing and assigning a quantitative score for (A) extent of metastatic disease and (B) level of functional disability. These patients were drawn from the population of patients with disseminated breast carcinoma attending the medical oncology clinics at the Medical College of Virginia Tumor Clinics for a 49 day period in 1975. The data from this patient sample were used to test several hypotheses.
Each patient underwent an initial screening procedure designed to clearly identify those patients with disseminated disease. This was followed …

It was found that M. salmoides and E. niger were …
Distribution And Effects Of Bacterial Endotoxin, Anne Carter Adams
Distribution And Effects Of Bacterial Endotoxin, Anne Carter Adams
Theses and Dissertations
In this study the distribution and effects of bacterial endotoxin were examined. Adult male BALB/c and adult male DUB/ICR mice were used in all experiments. Endotoxic activity of a number of strains from three genera of bacteria, Pseudomonas, Bacteroides, and Listeria, was detected using vincristine-treated mice as sensitized indicators for endotoxin and resistance to purified endotoxin induced by pretreatment with selected bacteria. Also, the effect of bacterial endotoxin and endotoxin-like substances on the course of primary amebic meningoencephalitis in mice, caused by Naegleria fowleri, was assessed.
The Bending Of Wood With Steam, James H. Cottey Jr.
The Bending Of Wood With Steam, James H. Cottey Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Based on experimentation with the steam bending of wood to curved shapes, this thesis describes my involvement with three basic aspects of the process. First is the procurement, assimilation, and construction of the equipment and apparatus necessary for the steam bending of wood. Secondly, the determination of certain qualities of particular woods in reference to steam bending is made. This includes: woods easily bent; woods not easily bent; the time required to plasticize stock; and the time required to set curves. Also noted are some of the physical limitations involved in bending stock with steam in the craftsman's studio. Thirdly, …
An Evaluation Of Centrifuged Vs Electronically Determined Hematocrits In Assessing The Degree Of Polycythemia In Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease, Marsha Rene Jones
An Evaluation Of Centrifuged Vs Electronically Determined Hematocrits In Assessing The Degree Of Polycythemia In Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease, Marsha Rene Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Secondary polycythemia is defined as an absolute erythrocytosis caused by an enhanced stimulation of red blood cell production. One of the most common methods of monitoring the degree of polycythemia is the measurement of the hematocrit. The hematocrit is the measurement of the volume of red blood cells.expressed as a percentage of the volume of whole blood in a sample. This measurement is usually done using one of two methods: (1) the Coulter Model S® or (2) the centrifuged micro-hematocrit method. However, we have noted a significant difference in the hematocrit values determined by these two methods when the hematocrits …
The Porcelain Groups, Robert Edward Chance
The Porcelain Groups, Robert Edward Chance
Theses and Dissertations
My background in clay has emphasized the development of technical considerations in functional ceramics as well as the search for personal images. The past two years have seen an emphasis on the exploration of technical areas chosen to lead to the development of a familiarity with techniques and a solidification of statement. The process has nurtured in me the realization that the objects I produce do not represent an attempt to attain an axiom of art but are personal statements developed through an empirical use of forms and images.
The Morphologic Changes In The Muscles Of Mastication Due To Direct Intramuscular Injection Of Lidocaine, Carbocaine, Procaine And Citanest, Kurt Elliot Friedman
The Morphologic Changes In The Muscles Of Mastication Due To Direct Intramuscular Injection Of Lidocaine, Carbocaine, Procaine And Citanest, Kurt Elliot Friedman
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most commonly experienced symptoms in dentistry and one that is of major concern to the dentist is pain. Since pain is manifested when an environmental change occurs causing injury to responsive tissues, it is often spoken of as a protective mechanism.
Pain has been described by a variety of terms: sharp, burning, aching, cramping, dull and throbbing! (Monheim, 1969). Therefore, it is a difficult term to define. Monheim (1969) describes pain as an unpleasant sensation created by a noxious stimulus that is mediated along specific nerve pathways into the central nervous system, where it is interpreted as …
A Survey Of Parental Knowledge Of Asthma, Nancy Aldred O'Donnell
A Survey Of Parental Knowledge Of Asthma, Nancy Aldred O'Donnell
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of parents' knowledge regarding asthma.
Twenty-five parents of children who have asthma were interviewed during their child's hospitalization for status asthmaticus. Adequate knowledge about environmental control and medication was noted in the majority of the subjects but over half were unable to explain the pathological changes which caused wheezeing. While most parents appear to have adequate knowledge of medications and environmental control on which to base their decisions about their child’s care there appears to be a need for more information regarding the pathophysiology.
A Comparison Of Acrosomal Proteinase Activity In The Male And Female Reproductive Tracts Of The Guinea Pig, Thomas Joseph Morris
A Comparison Of Acrosomal Proteinase Activity In The Male And Female Reproductive Tracts Of The Guinea Pig, Thomas Joseph Morris
Theses and Dissertations
The spermatozoon has been the subject of numerous investigations because of its remarkable specialization for locomotion and fertilization. Although the spermatozoon of the guinea pig is relatively large when compared with other mammalian spermatozoa, its small size has hidden many of the details of its structure from the light microscopist. It was not until the invention of the electron microscope that a thorough study of spermatozoon structure could be accomplished. The following anatomical description is based on the works of Fawcett and Hollenberg (1963), Fawcett (1965), and Fawcett (1970). The principle parts of the guinea pig spermatozoon are the head …
Activation Of The Gamma Motor System In The Cat Following Selective Stimulation Of The Motor Cortex And The Pyramidal Tract, James Elliott Forbes
Activation Of The Gamma Motor System In The Cat Following Selective Stimulation Of The Motor Cortex And The Pyramidal Tract, James Elliott Forbes
Theses and Dissertations
Until the mid to late 1800's, the cerebral hemispheres were considered to be only the sites of mentation and intellectual activity. On the basis of his observations of epileptic patients, HughIings Jackson (cited from Walshe, l935a) theorized that the cerebral hemispheres were also sites of motor control and sensory experience. The electrical excitability of the cerebrum was first demonstrated by Fritsch and Hitzig in 1870. Since then the motor representation of the various muscles has been mapped out and the types of movement in response to stimulation of the motor cortex and the pyramidal tract have been thoroughly studied.
Mammalian …
The Development Of An Idea, Marianne Stikas
The Development Of An Idea, Marianne Stikas
Theses and Dissertations
Whereas certain people start with a recollection or an experience and paint that experience, to some of us the act of doing it becomes the experience; so that we are not quite clear why we are engaged in a particular work. And because we are more interested in plastic matters than we are in a matter of words one can begin a picture and carry it through and stop it and do nothing about the title at all.
I believe that this statement by Baziotes has a great deal to do with the way I feel about my painting. Perhaps …
Hepatic Ornithine Metabolism In Hydrazine-Treated Rats, Van Saxton Hubbard
Hepatic Ornithine Metabolism In Hydrazine-Treated Rats, Van Saxton Hubbard
Theses and Dissertations
Ornithine plays an important role in mammalian intermediary metabolism. Ornithine can be (1) utilized as a component of the urea cycle, (2) decarboxylated to form putrescine, a precursor of the polyamines, spermidine and spermine, and (3) converted metabolically to arginine, proline and glutamate. In prior investigations conducted in our laboratories and others, free endogenous hepatic pools of ornithine were found to be elevated following hydrazine administration. Consequently, time-course alterations of arginase, ornithine δ-transaminase, ornithine transcarbamylase, and ornithine decarboxylase activities were investigated regarding the effect of hydrazine treatment on hepatic ornithine metabolism in the rat. As an outgrowth of these investigations, …
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Some Arylalkenyl And Arylepoxyalkyl Hydrogen Succinates And Hydrogen Glutarates As Inhibitors Of Rat Liver Β-Hydroxy-Β-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Reductase, Paul Emil Marecki
Theses and Dissertations
Atherosclerotic disease is an almost universal phenomenon and increases in severity and frequency with increasing age. Atherosclerosis may contribute to several disorders including bursting of an artery, blockage of an artery, or induction of arterial clotting. The culmination of these diseases is usually premature since at the time of death the unaffected organs are in reasonably satisfactory condition and could have operated for several more years. Among the many factors which act in concert to produce the disease, serum cholesterol levels play a central role. It has been suggested that the lowering of cholesterol levels will provide an effective means …

The Relationship Of The Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire Inventory To Clients Of A Methadone Maintenance Program, Margaret Ann Neale
Theses and Dissertations
An original study was undertaken to examine the relationship of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., a methadone maintenance program, to changes in personality factors as measured by R.B. Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Inventory, to compare the national norms of drug addicts/methadone users to the result of the 16 PF of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., and to determine if significant differences appear among treatment phase I, phase II, and phase III.
Twenty-one clients of the program, seven subjects in each of phases I, II, and III, were given the 16 PF by their counselors between September 10 and …
The Effect Of Security And Dominance On Task Perseverance, Gary M. Katz
The Effect Of Security And Dominance On Task Perseverance, Gary M. Katz
Theses and Dissertations
The present study investigated Maslow's assertion that individuals who were insecure and dominant would express their insecurity in a different manner than those individuals who were insecure and submissive. The amount of time spent on a puzzle solving task was used as an index of the expression of insecurity. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant interaction of security and dominance on the amount of time spent on the puzzle solving task, with the insecure-dominant group demonstrating more persistence than the insecure-submissive group at the task.
A pool of potential subjects completed Maslow's (1952) Security-Insecurity Inventory and the …
Corticospinal Fibers In A Prosimian Primate, Galago, George Edward Goode
Corticospinal Fibers In A Prosimian Primate, Galago, George Edward Goode
Theses and Dissertations
The function of the central nervous system cannot be understood from inspection of a single region, for each cell and fiber has discrete connections. Therefore, a study of the nervous system requires distinct approaches. One fundamental approach has been the study of comparative neuroanatomy.
In a comparative study of the evolution of the primates and subsequently man, the investigator is confronted with a variety of animal forms. Each form represents an end product of a long vertical line of evolutionary development. The problem is to try to reconstruct the vertical line (ancestral forms) from the horizontal end products (extant forms). …
The Two-Way Mixed Model Analysis Of Variance, Kenneth Davis Buckley
The Two-Way Mixed Model Analysis Of Variance, Kenneth Davis Buckley
Theses and Dissertations
The analysis of variance for experiments where the fixed effects or random effects model is appropriate is generally agreed upon with regard to testing procedures and covariance structure. It is only in experiments involving both random and fixed factors, i.e. mixed effects models, that controversy occurs as to the proper analysis. The mixed effect model has been considered by many statisticians, and several techniques have been developed for explaining its structure and performing its analysis for balanced data sets. The relationship of these techniques have been discussed in several papers as well.
The simplest case of the difficulties presented by …
The Molecular Nature And Replication Of R Factor 222 In Proteus Mirabilis, Dennis Jon Kopecko
The Molecular Nature And Replication Of R Factor 222 In Proteus Mirabilis, Dennis Jon Kopecko
Theses and Dissertations
The molecular nature and replicative behavior of R factor 222 was examined in Proteus mirabilis . In deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA} from R+ P. mirabilis , R factor 222 was identified by CsCl density gradient centrifugation as 2 satellite DNA bands at densities corresponding to 50 and 58 moles percent guanine plus cytosine (% GC) . Replication of the 50 and 58% GC components of R factor 222 in P. mirabilis was analyzed during growth in the presence and absence of chloramphenicol (CAM} and after shifting exponentialand stationary- phase cells to conditions which inhibit host protein or DNA synthesis . CAM …
The Effect Of Aflatoxin B1 On Growth Rate And Iron Metabolism In Juvenile Mongolian Gerbils (Meriones Unguiculatus), William Stanley Hastings Jr.
The Effect Of Aflatoxin B1 On Growth Rate And Iron Metabolism In Juvenile Mongolian Gerbils (Meriones Unguiculatus), William Stanley Hastings Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The metabolic secretions from Aspergillus flavus, aflatoxins. are often found as contaminants of agricultural products used for human and animal consumption. Aflatoxin B1 is the most toxic and carcinogenic of the aflatoxins. A reduction in weight gain has been observed when juvenile animals are fed aflatoxin B1 over an extended period of time. This reduction in weight gain may possibly result from an anemic condition induced by an alteration of iron absorption and/or distribution. The effect of chronic sublethal levels of this hepatocarcinogen on weight gain and the uptake and distribution of 59Fe++ were studied in this investigation.
An experimental …
Modulation Of Cortical And Pyramidal Tract Induced Motor Responses By Electrical Stimulation Of The Basal Ganglia, Roberta Ann Newton
Modulation Of Cortical And Pyramidal Tract Induced Motor Responses By Electrical Stimulation Of The Basal Ganglia, Roberta Ann Newton
Theses and Dissertations
Since the early 1800's, the basal ganglia have been recognized as an extrapyramidal subcortical motor area. Much of the knowledge of basal ganglia involvement in movement has been obtained through clinical symptomology. Consideration of the basal ganglia as a pure inhibitory influence upon motor regulation was a concept generated by early researchers (24,57,58). In spite of the fact that the basal ganglia was considered an inhibitory center, it was known that the basal ganglia produced fore limb flexion or contraversive head ‘turning. At the present, both facilitatory and inhibitory influences upon motor activity have been demonstrated (50). Physiological mechanisms underlying …

Studies Of Teratogenic Viruses: Minute Virus Of Mice And Colorado Tick Fever Virus, Robert Eldred Harris
Studies Of Teratogenic Viruses: Minute Virus Of Mice And Colorado Tick Fever Virus, Robert Eldred Harris
Theses and Dissertations
Studies were conducted in DUB/ICR mice with minute virus of mice (MVM), a single stranded DNA virus, and Colorado tick fever (CTF) virus, a double stranded RNA Virus, to determine if CTF virus had teratogenic potential and to characterize further MVM and its teratogenic effects. MVM is a known teratogen, whereas CTF virus had never been investigated previously for teratogenic potential.
In characterization studies of MVM infectivity, the following were determined: (a) Rat embryo cells proved to be superior to six cell lines in assaying for MVM infectivity; (b) MVM infectivity could be inactivated with common laboratory disinfectants, ultraviolet radiation, …
The Serlogical Specificity Of The Lectin From Lens Culinaris, Deborah Ward Heritage
The Serlogical Specificity Of The Lectin From Lens Culinaris, Deborah Ward Heritage
Theses and Dissertations
Lens culinaris, the common lentil, contains a lectin which has been shown to be specific for a glycoprotein saliva antigen and a glycolipoprotein serum antigen. Both the saliva and serum precipitin reactions with the lectin are directly inhibited with saccharides, especially those related to D-mannose. Electrophoresis of the serum antigen showed that it migrates as three bands, while appearing as a single band in double diffusion precipitin patterns. Quantitative studies of the saliva antigen levels by hemagglutination inhibition titration indicated a polygenic, quantitative mode of inheritance with a minimum heritability of O. 34. Blood group ABH secretor individuals were found …
The Anatomical Relationships, Ultrastructure, And Function Of The Pineal Gland In Some Common Laboratory Rodents, Joseph Chester Gregorek
The Anatomical Relationships, Ultrastructure, And Function Of The Pineal Gland In Some Common Laboratory Rodents, Joseph Chester Gregorek
Theses and Dissertations
The pineal complex of rodents is made up of a pineal organ which developmentally always originates from the area between the habenular and posterior commissure and a pineal sac which is continuous with the choroid plexus of the third ventricle. This sac appears to be identical to the choroid plexus at both light and electron microscopic levels. The pineal sac abuts the deep and superficial pineal organs of the golden hamster. In the PET mouse, gerbil, kangaroo rat and Chinese hamster, the sac is contiguous with only small areas of pinealocytes. This sac never abuts true pineal parenchyma in the …

Effect Of D-Amphetamine, Guanethidine, Disulfiram, And Stress On Gastric Ulceration In The Rat, Thomas M. Beall
Effect Of D-Amphetamine, Guanethidine, Disulfiram, And Stress On Gastric Ulceration In The Rat, Thomas M. Beall
Theses and Dissertations
Albino rats were injected with various doses of d-amphetamine (.02 mg/kg- 9 mg/kg) and subjected to 4 hours restraint in a cold (+5 degrees C) environment. Differential effects on ulceration were observed as a function ot the d-amphetamine dose level. Pretreatment with a .50 mg/kg injection of d-amphetamine significantly inhibited ulceration over that of saline injected, control animals, while a 9 mg/kg dose injection of the drug significantly facilitated it. Such results were explained in terms of a model interaction between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activity, and the effect that such activity has on gastric conditions conducive to ulceration. …
An Ultrastructural Study Of Tubules, Vasculature And Interstitium In Human Renal Homografts, Marilyn Hatch
An Ultrastructural Study Of Tubules, Vasculature And Interstitium In Human Renal Homografts, Marilyn Hatch
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years renal homotransplantation has become more frequently used in the treatment of terminal renal disease in man. By carefully selecting donors with the aid of tissue compatibility tests and employing immunosuppressive drugs, these transplants have become increasingly more successful. It is true, however, that even with good tissue match-up and drug treatment rejection episodes occur, frequently within the first two-postsurgical weeks. The majority of these rejection crises may be reversed by increasing drug dosages and occasionally applying x-irradiation to the area of the transplant. In other cases rejection by the recipient is responsible for cessation of function of …
Mechanisms Of Drug Distribution In Rat Submaxillary Gland In Vitro, James W. Putney Jr.
Mechanisms Of Drug Distribution In Rat Submaxillary Gland In Vitro, James W. Putney Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The access of drugs to variofis sites of action in the body is impeded by a succession of membranes. Likewise, the removal of a drug or foreign substance from the body is similarly dependent on the ability of the substance under consideration to permeate biological barriers. A con-committant problem generally arises concerning the overall time course of drug action: that of drug storage through binding or similar processes. Schanker (196h) however, has stated that "Although the mechanisms of localization and those of membrane transfer are in many respects different problems, there are some instances in which they are inseparable parts …
