A Critical Examination Of The Ethical Philosophy Of Ayn Rand, Virginia Jean Osborn

Masters Theses

The central purpose of this paper is to critically examine and to render consistent three major areas of Ayn Rand's ethical philosophy "Objectivism." The Questionable Moral Value Of Major Characters In The Later Works Of Henry James, Joseph R. Fiore Aug 1973

The Questionable Moral Value Of Major Characters In The Later Works Of Henry James, Joseph R. Fiore

Masters Theses

Chapter I: Introduction

As human beings, when we cannot see clearly into the workings of life, we call it ambiguous--and rightly so. Judgment of our own behavior and that of others is always suspect. We have a tendency to label this person as "good" or that act as "evil," but there should always be a certain amount of uncertainty as to whether or not our perceptions and our ensuing judgments are correct. Those of us who are literature have also, by habit, come to look at literature as reflecting the same standards of right and wrong, of good and evil. …

Establishing Dramatic Space On Non-Proscenium Stages Through Lighting, David Kip Kriebs Aug 1973

Establishing Dramatic Space On Non-Proscenium Stages Through Lighting, David Kip Kriebs

Masters Theses

The volume of space which contains an individual actor's psychological environment is defined, for the purpose of this thesis, as the dramatic space inhabited by that actor. These spaces are considered to be the volumes within which a measurement of the internal and externals forces remains constant. Dramatic spaces vary in quality with the actions of the occupants of the spaces and with varying conditions existing in the surrounding universe.

The lighting of a volume of space on an open stage represents a major proportion of the force exerted by the external universe. Because the lighting is under the control …

Nikos Kazantzakis And Albert Camus, Maria Eugene Oakberg Aug 1973

Nikos Kazantzakis And Albert Camus, Maria Eugene Oakberg

Masters Theses

It is not without apprehension that I approach the work of two of the greatest writers of our century, Nikos Kazantzakis and Albert Camus. I chose these two writers as the subject of my thesis because I was deeply moved by their never-ending struggle to achieve happiness in their terrestrial existence. To me these two figures, who tried to reach the unreachable, to bear witness to the anguished cry of man, to defy God and become free.

The purpose of this thesis is to follow Kazantzakis and Camus on their road to freedom, in a world without a master. We …

Masters Theses

This study is a survey of the critical reactions of American film critics and scholars to the cinema career of Clarence Brown. It is an initial step toward the illumination of Brown's contributions to film history.

Film critiques were gathered from sources contemporary to Brown's career as well as from modern-day sources. After a biographical sketch, the general critical reactions to Brown and his career are examined. Reviews of specific films are viewed in terms of the technical dimension of his film art, the dramatic dimension, and rhetorical dimension, and historical dimension. After an appraisal of these critical evaluations, conclusions …

Celibacy And The Gregorian Reform, Raymond M. Rademacher Apr 1973

Celibacy And The Gregorian Reform, Raymond M. Rademacher

Masters Theses

Included in the Gregorian Reform of the eleventh century was the clerical discipline of celibacy. Even though celibacy was not a new discipline at that time, Pope Gregory VII vigorously enforced the canons on celibacy. In a matter of such intimacy there was bound to be opposition to the enforcement of these canons. Tradition offered ample support to both parties of the conflict. The long standing tradition of married clergy served as a strong support to those who opposed the Gregorian enforcement. However, the traditional canons in favor of celibacy gave impetus to the reformers of the eleventh century.

Pope …

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to try to determine whether or not the way that a homosexual recalled his parent child relationships might be a function of the population from which he was drawn.

The primary hypothesis of this paper was that attitudes would not differ significantly between homosexual and heterosexual groups. A secondary hypothesis was that attitudes would not differ significantly between groups in each area covered; therapy, social action, and non-social action.

Sixty male homosexuals and 60 male heterosexuals volunteered to participate in this study.
