Over-Policing And Under-Protecting In American Cities, Margaret Hession Dec 2022

Over-Policing And Under-Protecting In American Cities, Margaret Hession

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In recent years there have been numerous protests all over the United States focused on the over-policing of African Americans by law enforcement. Those involved are protesting against a term known as over-policing, the blatant brutality and senseless murders, that have taken place for decades but have been made ever more visible by our modern media channels. “Over-policing allows police to use excessive force and brutalize disenfranchised neighborhoods and target people of color indiscriminately. Ironically, as politicians take a “tough on crime” stance, violence has actually gone down, but police budgets and presence have increased. The American criminal justice system …

How The Vegan Vs. Non-Vegan Diet Affects Strength Training Athletes, Kelsey Craig

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Today, there are a myriad of diets for consumers to choose from. Some people chose to follow a diet where they exclude certain foods groups, such as meat, and others choose to consume a diet with no moderation whatsoever. This literature review examines the vegan diet, and one that can be portrayed as a healthy standard diet, to analyze dietary needs of a strength training athlete. This review will not conclude which diet is better, rather, an approach for finding gaps within one’s diet, relative to their activity level.

The Effects Of Multilingual Learning On Social-Emotional And Cognitive Development In Children, Jasmine Won

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Children worldwide learn multiple languages at a young age, especially if they do not live in a country with English as the dominant language. While teaching young children languages other than English has not been a common practice in the United States, research shows that the practice is still growing and there is increased awareness of cultural competence in teaching languages (Garcia-Vazquez et al., 2021; Ingle, 2021). This study aims to discover the cognitive and social-emotional effects of learning an additional language at a young age. To examine this, 90 fifth-grade English Learner students were observed for 35 hours in …

From Massachusetts To Ravensbrück: Betty Laurie, The United States, And The Holocaust, Delainey Bostley

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The United States has taken a large responsibility in regards to the remembrance and legacy of the Holocaust and World War II, yet the way in which the U.S. remembers the event is fairly narrow. Despite both the war and the Holocaust being a transnational event, remembrance in the United States is so focused on American triumphs and victories that it ignores many elements that give insight into the the overall understanding of the events. Why is that? The life and story of Betty Laurie will provide insight into the answer. Born in the 1890’s in Scotland, she immigrated to …

The Parental Perception Of The Effects Of Therapeutic Riding On Children With Disabilities’ Academics Before And During Covid-19, Ashley Drake

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The search for effective forms of intervention is ongoing and therapeutic riding is emerging through research as a successful form. It is now more important than ever to discover effective interventions as the COVID-19 pandemic has jolted the education of many students, especially those with a disability. Most teachers were forced to implement an online teaching method to continue serving their students safely. Even when special education institutions remained open, many parents elected to keep their children home due to medical vulnerability and the risks that attending in-person education posed (Asbury et al., 2021). According to, Raghul et al. (2021) …

Prostitution And The Contagious Diseases Acts In Nineteenth-Century England, Victoria Knox Dec 2022

Prostitution And The Contagious Diseases Acts In Nineteenth-Century England, Victoria Knox

Honors Program Theses and Projects

During England’s Victorian period, the Contagious Diseases Acts were established, which regulated women’s bodies and represented the intersectionality of gender, class, and power. Before the CD Acts, England began to grow rapidly during the Industrial Revolution, which was in part made possible by the work of underpaid and undervalued working-class women. One option for women to earn an income was prostitution. Men who worked as sailors and soldiers were common customers in prostitution, which contributed to the rapid spread of venereal disease throughout the British Empire. In the spirit of protecting men, the first CD Acts were passed in the …

Holes Where People Go, Lucienne Quirk Dec 2022

Holes Where People Go, Lucienne Quirk

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Holes Where People Go is a short story collection that explores an inaptitude to properly feel and process grief. Each narrator in the collection begins by avoiding the acknowledgement of their own grief and loss, even while they’re convincing themselves otherwise. When outside forces arise that confront and challenge their emotional stasis, there is a promise–yet never a certainty– that they may change. The titular hole, therefore, is not just a metaphor for the unnamed places lost people occupy in our subconscious, but also the defensive willingness to keep them there. This is where I feel this collection offers something …

Exploring The Binding Of Anticancer Drug Bi-3802 With Dna Using Optical Tweezers, Jared Mcauliffe Dec 2022

Exploring The Binding Of Anticancer Drug Bi-3802 With Dna Using Optical Tweezers, Jared Mcauliffe

Honors Program Theses and Projects

BI-3802 is a relatively new anticancer drug known to bind to the transcription repressor BCL6 which can lead to the regression of the most common form of cancer in the lymphatic system, B-cell lymphoma. Based on the structure of BI-3802 we believe this small molecule drug can bind to DNA through intercalation. Intercalators are a special type of molecule which have a flat planar section that can stack between DNA base pairs. In this study, we use Optical tweezers to trap a single DNA molecule in order to explore the binding of BI-3802 with DNA. Once we trap a single …

Utilizing Anti-Racist Pedagogy In The Modern U.S. Classroom, Jessica Sweeney Dec 2022

Utilizing Anti-Racist Pedagogy In The Modern U.S. Classroom, Jessica Sweeney

Honors Program Theses and Projects

For decades, scholars and educators have been looking at ways to make the U.S. classroom an equitable learning environment. Racism is one of the many deficits in society that make education, and the world at large, inequitable. The racism we often think about is overt. Yet racism functions systemically and manipulates institutions like education in more covert ways. Because people do not imagine the same level of overt racism in education, they often think it is not there anymore. This paper aims to outline the problem of systemic racism and how it affects assessment practices in the ELA classroom. Further, …

¿Pretérito O Imperfecto?: Advancing Spanish Past Tense Instruction For World Language Teachers And Their L2 Classroom, Jake Murray Dec 2022

¿Pretérito O Imperfecto?: Advancing Spanish Past Tense Instruction For World Language Teachers And Their L2 Classroom, Jake Murray

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The addition of a world language to one’s education is an exciting and possibly nerve-wracking moment (Krashen, 1982, as cited in Shrum & Glisan, 2016). For perhaps the first time, students witness how their classroom ushers in the sound system of a new language, the vivid colors of a previously unexplored culture, and the understanding that they have become global citizens. Such is the case for students whose home/first language (L1) is English and who begin their study of Spanish, the fourth-most spoken language in the world (Berlitz, 2022). With 534 million speakers, this language promises to give learners a …

How Slavery Is Taught In Schools, Aidan Mordas Dec 2022

How Slavery Is Taught In Schools, Aidan Mordas

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The debate about what should be taught to school children about slavery has been around since the days of Reconstruction. During that time, it was clear that different parts of the country wanted to teach different versions of that history. In certain parts of the country, many state legislatures believed it was best for parents to have those conversations with children. While in other parts of the country, it was clear that schools wanted to teach the a complex and accurate historical account. We can see the roots of this debate in the heated, divisive responses to the Black Lives …

The primary purpose of this research was to build a website that shares culturally responsive teaching methods that educators can implement for their students. This online resource shares techniques for implementing an array of culturally diverse books into the curriculum, integrating cultural aspects into math …

Treatment Of The Mentally Ill In The U.S. Gilded Age, Madeline Whelan Dec 2022

Treatment Of The Mentally Ill In The U.S. Gilded Age, Madeline Whelan

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The maltreatment of the working class and immigrants was quite prominent throughout the Gilded Age of the United States. The endless capitalist desires of a growing industrial nation often left American laborers at the mercy of corporations and businessmen. Workers endured strenuous labor, hazardous work environments, and unjust management; yet, earned barely enough money to pay for their rent, let alone food and other necessities. Immigrants flooded the country with hopes of securing profit for their relatives back home, only to encounter inhumane working conditions and prejudice from nativists. As the distribution of wealth between laborers and the middle and …

Challenging Wrongful Convictions And The Death Penalty In Three State-Level Cases, Theresa Debrah

Honors Program Theses and Projects

This paper aims to examine current high-profile state-level cases of those who have been put on death row and shed light on those individuals that may possibly be wrongfully convicted, either factually or procedurally. Previous studies have documented wrongful convictions within death row sentences, which is significant given the permanence of this penalty. This penalty is also disproportionately used against African American defendants. This study addresses three cases that expose similar factors and patterns that further our understanding of how race, victim-offender pairings, and legal irregularities affect death penalty cases. For this study, we used qualitative data to gather the …

Vertex-Magic Graphs, Karissa Massud

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In this paper, we will study magic labelings. Magic labelings were first introduced by Sedláček in 1963 [3]. At this time, the labels on the graph were only assigned to the edges. In 1970, Kotzig and Rosa defined what are now known as edge-magic total labelings, where both the vertices and the edges of the graph are labeled. Following this in 1999, MacDougall, Miller, Slamin, and Wallis introduced the idea of vertex-magic total labelings. There are many different types of magic labelings. In this paper will focus on vertex-magictotal labelings.

Black Lives Matter Vs. Anti-Lockdownand Stop The Steal: How Framing Affects Political Protests, Tarah Pierre-Louis

Honors Program Theses and Projects

For eight years the Black Lives Matter Movement has made consistent efforts to combat racial injustice, however, their message is often undermined by politicians, media elites, and partisan counter protestors who claim the movement is both aggressive and unwarranted. The same critics of the Summer 2020 Black Lives Matter protests drew comparisons to Anti-Lockdown protests in early 2020, and the insurrection on Capitol Hill in January of 2021 – despite inherently different messages behind each respective protest. This project sets out to find how the framing of the Black Lives Matter movement compares to other partisan protests such as the …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a devastating form of dementia with 5 million people suffering from the disease in the United States alone. Thus, there is a need to understand the cause of AD so that therapeutics can be developed to treat it. The greatest risk factor for AD is the APOE gene, which encodes the apolipoprotein Eprotein. Three predominant APOE alleles exist humans, which give rise to three isoforms, called apoE2, E3, and E4. Individuals with apoE4 are ten times more likely to develop AD. In contrast, the apoE2 isoform has a neuroprotective effect and is associated with a 2-fold …
