A mechanized harvest system combined with whole-tree chipper producing mixed hardwood chips was investigated on two harvesting sites in the central Appalachian region, USA. Production and machine rate data of the operations were collected through time-motion study, with chipping time elements categorized into feeding, chipping, and loading. Chipping cycles averaged 21.5 minutes to produce 23.54 green tons per truckload, providing an hourly rate of 65.82 green tons/PMH (41.1 dry tons) by the whole-tree chipper. Total cycle time including truck delivery averaged 183 minutes, giving an hourly rate of 7.7 green tons/PMH (4.8 dry tons/PMH). The hourly cost of the harvesting …
Nondestructive Evaluation Of Frp Composite Bridge Componenets Using Infrared Thermography And Digital Tap Tesing, Ruben Mangal Joshi
Nondestructive Evaluation Of Frp Composite Bridge Componenets Using Infrared Thermography And Digital Tap Tesing, Ruben Mangal Joshi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Aging of civil infrastructures is one of the major problems faced by the engineering industry today, with the concrete structures cracking and the steel reinforcement corroding due to exposure to deicing chemicals, resulting in shorter service life. An alternative to the degrading infrastructures made of concrete and steel is the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites, which are noncorrosive. Use of FRP as structural components such as bridge decks and retrofitting jackets can solve the problem of aging with enhanced durability in future constructions. But, proper installation of newer material in structurally important infrastructure requires a reliable method of …
Rethinking Interaction: Identity And Agency In The Performance Of “Interactive” Electronic Music, Jacob A. Kopcienski
Rethinking Interaction: Identity And Agency In The Performance Of “Interactive” Electronic Music, Jacob A. Kopcienski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
This document investigates interaction between human performers and various interactive technologies in the performance of interactive electronic and computer music. Specifically, it observes how the identity and agency of the interactive technology is experienced and perceived by the human performer. First, a close examination of George Lewis’ creation of and performance with his own historic interactive electronic and computer works reveals his disposition of interaction as improvisation. This disposition is contextualized within then contemporary social and political issues related to African American experimental musicians as well as an emerging culture of electronic and computer musicians concerned with interactivity. Second, an …

Effects Of Humor Use By Brands And Their Parody Accounts On Twitter, Nick Eckman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
This study examines the impact of humor use by brands and brand parody accounts on Twitter. Specifically, this research investigates how the type of humorous message and the message source influence perceptions of the brand, behavioral intentions toward the brand, and perceived parasocial interaction with the brand. It also examines the relationship between gender and perceptions of humor. Accordingly, this study uses a 2 (humor: wordplay vs. disparagement) x 2 (source: brand account vs. parody account) between-subjects online experiment to answer these questions. Key results suggest that parody Twitter accounts, particularly those using disparagement-style humor, may be advantageous to the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Context: Chronic onset of sacroiliac joint dysfunction (SIJD) is increasing in adolescent athletic populations including soccer. However, there is currently no pre-season screening tool for SIJD in this population. There are variables that are currently associated with SIJD, however, it is unknown if these variables developed into a screening tool can accurately predict the risk of sustaining SIJD. Objective: The purpose of this study was to create an effective screening tool for SIJD in adolescent soccer athletes and establish predictive values for SIJD injury risk. Design: A retrospective exploratory study to screen for risk factors contributing to SIJD in the …

Integrated Sensing Systems For On-Orbit Robotic Satellite Servicing Applications, Eric Loy
Integrated Sensing Systems For On-Orbit Robotic Satellite Servicing Applications, Eric Loy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
There are a variety of stakeholders when it comes to space (the military, other governmental entities, private sector companies, consumers, the scientific community, etc.), and they would all prefer the operational lives of their satellites, observatories, space stations, and other assets to be maximized. Out of the large number of assets in space, only a few were designed with serviceability as a goal. The ability to service "non-cooperative" satellites is an ongoing project being investigated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and Satellite Servicing Projects Division (SSPD), along with other industrial partners. This …

The Use Of Genetic Tools To Assist In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Management In West Virginia, Darren M. Wood
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Although nearly extinct historically, the current population of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in West Virginia serves as a plentiful resource, however; currently there are two uncertainties to the socio-economic benefits of white-tailed deer in West Virginia: poaching and chronic wasting disease (CWD). While infection with the disease invariably results in a 100% fatality rate, previous studies have indicated that nucleotide polymorphisms in the 285th and 286th position of the prion precursor gene (PRNP) have been associated with the delay of clinical disease symptoms. To determine the association with CWD positive individuals in a CWDaffected population in West Virginia and determine …

Remotely Sensed Hydroclimatic Variability For Water Security In An Agricultural Basin, Ashish Kondal
Remotely Sensed Hydroclimatic Variability For Water Security In An Agricultural Basin, Ashish Kondal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
The Indus Basin has supported agricultural practices since the Harappan civilization (3000-1500 BC). Abundance of water has always supported agriculture in the region and built the Indus Basin as one of the major agriculture based economies of the world. The obvious dependency of agriculture on weather and the vagaries of climate emphasizes the necessity of a comprehensive hydro-climate study of the region. The role of climate change in the Indus Basin has always been a contentious issue. Groundwater depletion is evident in the region, and its steady and alarmingly declining rate has brought concerns for the future of agriculture in …

Effects Of Topography On Near-Roadway Particulate Matter Concentrations And Diesel Emissions, Andrew D. Epperly
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of topography on the concentrations of particulate matter near heavily trafficked roadways. Particulate matter is an attractive tracer for diesel emissions and these emissions have been linked to a variety of negative health effects. Much research has been conducted to characterize particulate matter emissions near roadways, however this work has been conducted on relatively flat terrain. This study was conducted within a valley in the Appalachian Mountains to see if the alternate terrain influenced the size of the particulate matter plume near a roadway.;Particulate matter concentrations were collected and compared …

Experimental Analysis Of Unsteady Aerodynamic Covert Feather Behavior, Laura J. Ordaz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
The interest in man-made flying vehicles has existed for over 100 years. Bird flight has been the major inspiration for the creation of such vehicles. More recently, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have become more popular and their use in more applications has developed the need for improved maneuverability. UAVs are also decreasing in size which has allowed them to operate within similar flight conditions as birds. Studying bird feather behavior may open doors and shed some light as to how the bird achieves such agility and control, which may then be adapted to UAV flight. In this research, the motion …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
In legumes, symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) occurs through a cooperative relationship established with rhizobial diazotrophic bacteria. This association triggers the de novo development of a highly specialized organ from root, called nodule. In this dissertation, we explore the molecular functional genetics of nodulation in the model legume Medicago truncatula in the scope of knowledge. Followed by a linearization of the current knowledge about the roles of Transcription Factors in legume nodule symbiosis. In an attempt of understanding the orchestration dynamics of nodulation and processes that generate SNF. Legumes evolved novel genes related with nodule development, symbiosis establishment and nitrogen fixation, …

Three Essays On Nonlinear Effects In Development Economics: An Applied Semiparametric Approach, Jinjing Tian
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
The first chapter studies the finance-growth nexus with firm-level data to examine the impact of debt on firms' productivity growth in Chinese industrial firms, utilizing a newly-developed nonparametric threshold regression. It shows that while debt is overall positively related with productivity growth in Chinese industrial firms, each sample group exhibits a significant threshold effect of debt, beyond which the firms' debt exhibits diminishing returns on productivity growth. Also, the magnitude of both the estimated threshold levels and partial effects of debt is heterogeneous across ownership types and regions, with state-owned enterprises (among ownership types) and firms in the western region …
