Real-Time Multimedia-Based Education Through The Internet, Abhay Arun Bakshi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The rapid advances in computer and communications technologies are challenging the American education systems to provide increased educational opportunities beyond the traditional geographic boundaries at a reasonable cost. Many educational institutions are answering this challenge by developing distance education programs. Distance education provides effective learning environment. An important requirement for effective distance education is the availability of continuous interactivity and immediate feedback. Over the Internet, synchronous sharing of multimedia content introduces unacceptable delays as network bandwidth is limited. In this thesis, the issue of Internet bandwidth is minimized and a novel system is developed for distance education using multimedia course …

Droplet Coalescence In The Shear Flow Of Model Emulsions, Adam Abdallah Al-Mulla Dec 1998

Droplet Coalescence In The Shear Flow Of Model Emulsions, Adam Abdallah Al-Mulla

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

During the flow of an emulsion, droplets of the dispersed phase can deform, breakup, coalesce or migrate to other regions within the flow field. Understanding these different processes, both individually and jointly, is relevant, for example, to the development of morphology in immiscible liquid-liquid systems such as polymer blends formulated using single screw or twin screw extruders. While deformation and breakup have been well researched for single drops, migration occurs only for concentrated emulsions. In this study, dilute emulsions of silicone oil and castor oil were employed to observe drop coalescence in the absence of drop breakup; flow fields utilized …

Development And Validation Of A Modular Hybrid Electric Vehicle Simulation Model, William Frederick Kellermeyer Iii Dec 1998

Development And Validation Of A Modular Hybrid Electric Vehicle Simulation Model, William Frederick Kellermeyer Iii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

To attempt to bring rigor and analysis to the design process, accurate simulation programs are crucial. Most hybrid electric vehicle hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) simulation programs are written for very specific component configurations and only allow changes in component sizes. These programs prove helpful only if one designs a component configuration similar to the one already simulated. A modular based program such as the one developed here allows simpler reconfiguration of the components for an accurate simulation of almost any component configuration design. This HEV simulation program allows for simulation of all three types of hybrids, with several engine types …

Synthesis And Reactions Of Antimony Allyloxides, Matthew Alan Moser Dec 1998

Synthesis And Reactions Of Antimony Allyloxides, Matthew Alan Moser

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Heterogeneous catalysts usually consist of a high metal oxide or metal dispersed on a reducible oxide support. "Inert" supports have been shown to be intimately involved in heterogeneous catalytic processes. Of interest is the MoO3/Sb2O3 catalyst used in the ammoxidation of propene to acrylonitrile. Simple molybdenum complexes have provided a model for the role of the MoO3/Sb2O 3 catalyst, but the role of the support is not well understood. In order to better understand the role of the support, a series of antimony allyloxide compounds of the formula Sb(OR)3 (where OR = allyl oxide, 3-Methyl-2-buten-1-oxide, 2-Methyl-3-buten-2-oxide, and 3-Methyl-3-buten-1-oxide) by metathesis …

Productive Performance And Fertility Of Broiler Breeders Maintained In Commercial Colony Cages And On The Conventional Floors, Kitogho J. Mwashighadi Dec 1998

Productive Performance And Fertility Of Broiler Breeders Maintained In Commercial Colony Cages And On The Conventional Floors, Kitogho J. Mwashighadi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

A trial with four replicates was conducted to compare performance and fertility of naturally mated broiler breeders maintained on litter floor versus their counterparts maintained in two tiered colony cages. Cage maintained hens with restricted feeding weighed less (P 0.05) was found in egg weights among treatments. No difference (P > 0.01) was found in feed conversion ratio per dozen eggs produced by hens maintained in cages and those on the conventional floors. A higher (P < 0.05) hen-day production was observed from 29 to 35 weeks of age in broilers maintained in cages than those on the conventional floors, but after this period no difference (P > 0.05) occurred. There were more (P < 0.05) eggs collected with cracks from cages than from the litter floors. The fertility rate was different (P 0.05) difference in mortality rate occurred between hens maintained on the fitter floors versus those in cages. When the breeders were 41 weeks of age, eggs from each treatment group were randomly collected, weighed, and incubated. Offspring from these treatments were randomly allocated to litter floor pens. Progeny were spaced at 23 CM.2 and were reared to 42 days. There was no significant (P > 0.05) difference in growth rate and feed conversion ratio in offspring from hens maintained on the litter floors versus …

Velocity Profile In Confined Elliptic Fractures, Stephen Ronald Pack Jr. Dec 1998

Velocity Profile In Confined Elliptic Fractures, Stephen Ronald Pack Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The primary objective of this research is to determine the friction inside a smooth fracture and to incorporate the effect of friction on a fluid transient inside a tapered-elliptical-confined fracture. In order to do so, the non-uniform velocity profile in an elliptic fracture with laminar flow of both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids was calculated. A transient flow computer program is presented using the method of characteristics, to show the frictional effects on acoustic damping. However for flow inside a hydraulic fracture, the 3D velocity profile is highly non-uniform, and the use of Vav creates an error as Vmax >> Vav. The …

Investigation Of The Formation Of Residual Ash On Candle Filters, Sharath J. Simha Dec 1998

Investigation Of The Formation Of Residual Ash On Candle Filters, Sharath J. Simha

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

When coal undergoes combustion, not all the carbon in the coal may be consumed. This is due to improper mixing of reactants, proximity of cold surfaces and the desire to operate combustors at lower temperatures. Depending on the type of coal and the operating conditions of the combustor, there may be about 4--6% of unburned carbon in the refuse. This unburned carbon is carried along in the flow of gases and ash. If the combustion gas products are to pass through a high temperature gas filtration system, ash and unburned carbon are deposited on the wall of a candle filter. …

Pseudospectral Techniques For Non -Smooth Evolutionary Problems, Chris Palmer Guenther Dec 1998

Pseudospectral Techniques For Non -Smooth Evolutionary Problems, Chris Palmer Guenther

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

A pseudospectral approach is used to solve non-smooth evolutionary problems using Fourier collocation and Chebyshev collocation. It is well known that pseudospectral methods for smooth problems can offer superior accuracy over finite difference and finite element methods.;This paper explores the use of pseudospectral methods for non-smooth evolutionary problems in the area of hyperbolic heat transfer. Boundary and initial conditions are considered which cause instantaneous jumps, in the temperature and flux, prior to the propagation of a thermal wave into the medium. There is a considerable amount of literature that has investigated hyperbolic heat transfer under similar conditions, the common problems …

Resistance-In-Series Modeling In High-Shear Rotary Ultrafiltration, Ronald L. Vaughan Jr. Dec 1998

Resistance-In-Series Modeling In High-Shear Rotary Ultrafiltration, Ronald L. Vaughan Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Large volumes of spent oil-in-water emulsions are produced in the metal working (MW) industry. In high-shear rotary ultrafiltration (HSR-UF), disk membranes are rotated at speeds up to 1,750 rpm to generate hydraulic turbulence, which scours the membrane surface. Thus, the pump is required only to provide transmernbrane pressure and a small amount of recirculation.;A parametric waste-specific study was conducted to assess the ability of the resistance-in-series (RIS) permeate flux model to predict pressure-flux data collected in the HSR-UF of a synthetic MW fluid. Experiments were conducted using a pilot-scale HSR-UF system with a 0.11 mum average-pore size membrane at a …

Computational Models Of Particle Size Effects On Brittle Oxide Scale Erosion, Ravi S. Tangirala Dec 1998

Computational Models Of Particle Size Effects On Brittle Oxide Scale Erosion, Ravi S. Tangirala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Metals and alloys designed for machines at elevated temperatures have microstructures and chemistries optimized to provide strength and resistance to oxidation. The majority of the commercial high temperatures metal or alloys intended to use at temperatures below 850°C or so rely on the formation of a continuous surface layer of essentially oxide scale for further oxidation resistance. Erosion of these machine parts by the small solid particle entrained in the liquid or gaseous working environment is a serious problem in many industrial applications. Numerous experiments have been conducted to obtain empirical relations for predicting material loss during erosion and to …

Subjects reached rate criterion faster and with less …

Scale And Texture In Digital Image Classification, Christopher John Sebastian Ferro Dec 1998

Scale And Texture In Digital Image Classification, Christopher John Sebastian Ferro

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This thesis is a theoretical and empirical study on textural properties of digital images. Spatial information exists at a hierarchy of scales and texture is a consequence of the objects in that hierarchy. Within-class texture results from the spatial arrangement of objects at the next finer level in the hierarchy than the informational class. Between-class texture results from spectral differences between adjacent classes and is most obvious near class edges, especially for smooth classes. In rough classes between-class variance may not differ much from within-class variance. Errors in classifications using texture, therefore, are most likely associated with, class edges; however, …

Perturbation Studies Of Excitable Media, Lisa Elizabeth Seagraves Dec 1998

Perturbation Studies Of Excitable Media, Lisa Elizabeth Seagraves

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) based systems are probably the most often studied polymer gels due to their dramatic change in volume, swelling and deswelling. Since this system has the best response to pH between 4 and 7, the ferrocyanide-iodate-sulfite (FIS) reaction, which exhibits pH oscillations between 4 and 7.5 in a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR), is a good candidate for studies of oscillatory gel systems.;This work also focused on two dynamical phenomena in the ruthenium catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. One is self-organized criticality and the other is periodic forcing and how they can be studied with the BZ reaction. Self-organized criticality …

Identification Of Math Anxiety Subtypes, Aline Elizabeth Rabalais Dec 1998

Identification Of Math Anxiety Subtypes, Aline Elizabeth Rabalais

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Conceptualizations of mathematics anxiety, as well as factors that are empirically related to it, were identified from the existing literature. These factors are test, evaluation, trait, and state anxiety, as well as gender and level of math ability. Differences in these factors were hypothesized to distinguish subtypes of highly math anxious individuals from one another. In order to determine whether subtypes exist, cluster analyses were performed on a sample of 96 highly math anxious college students. The results revealed three clusters distinguished by completion time on two versions of a math test and age. Furthermore, participants' responses on a variety …

Semi-Automated Modeling Approaches To Route Selection In Gis, Binfei Chen Dec 1998

Semi-Automated Modeling Approaches To Route Selection In Gis, Binfei Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

As an alternative to traditional graphical intuitive approaches (GIA), a semi-automated modeling approach (SMA) can more efficiently identify linear routes by using powerful iterative and automated methods. In this research, two case studies were investigated to examine critical issues relating to the accuracy and effectiveness of raster-defined algorithmic approaches to linear route location. The results illustrate that different shortest-path algorithms do not necessarily result in markedly different linear routes. However, differing results can occur when using different neighboring-cell links in the cell-based route network construction. Cell-based algorithmic approaches in both Arc/Info and IDRISI software generate very similar results which are …

Willingness To Pay For Industrial Recruitment: A Look At Local Decision-Maker Activity Versus Citizen Preference, Beth Ann Loy Dec 1998

Willingness To Pay For Industrial Recruitment: A Look At Local Decision-Maker Activity Versus Citizen Preference, Beth Ann Loy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Academic research in the area of economic development policy is overwhelmingly critical of industrial recruitment, recommending instead that resources be directed towards strategies such as business retention and expansion, fostering local entrepreneurship, and amenity development. This research moves beyond criticizing industrial recruitment policy and explores one potential reason, a high discount rate, for practitioners' reliance on recruitment over other available local development techniques. The research also investigates developer's probability of success for industrial recruitment as well as alternative development strategies and examines whether economic developer use of incentive packages to recruit local businesses is a rational decision, i.e., supported by …

Interoperable Components Across Multiple Component Architectures, Ravi S. Banda Dec 1998

Interoperable Components Across Multiple Component Architectures, Ravi S. Banda

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

A component is a pre-fabricated, pre-tested software object that provides clients with a well-defined set of services. Component software requires an architecture through which any developer or vendor can deliver a component at any time and have that component become immediately useful to applications on any given system. A system that supports component software must therefore support a generic service abstraction that is, an architecture that defines how all types of components appear and how they are manipulated. As part of the thesis various component architectures COM, JavaBeans and CORBA have been studied and the interoperability issues between the components …

Computational Modeling Of Brittle Impact Erosion Mechanisms, Shanmuga Sundaram Balasubramaniyam Dec 1998

Computational Modeling Of Brittle Impact Erosion Mechanisms, Shanmuga Sundaram Balasubramaniyam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Materials are subjected to an erosion-corrosion environment in a wide range of applications today. Elevated temperatures promote the formation of oxide layers in jet engines. In fluidized bed boilers, the bed materials and piping of slurries and caustic materials cause erosion and corrosion. The process of erosion-corrosion may result in material loss and damage. Proper analytical modeling of the erosion-corrosion processes validated by experiments is needed to estimate the extent of damage in the material.;Empirical relations are available in the literature for predicting the amount of material loss due to erosion. These are obtained by conducting large number of experiments. …

Impedance Effects Of Metallic Ground Plane On The Ctha Antenna, Tao Guan Dec 1998

Impedance Effects Of Metallic Ground Plane On The Ctha Antenna, Tao Guan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

As with the fast-paced development of the communication industry, antennas have become an indispensable part of daily life. However, everyone may have experienced the malfunction of a communication system or radio due to a nearby human body or building or automobile. Then comes the question of how adjacent objects influence the antenna. This thesis has concentrated on the study of these effects on the impedance of the CTHA (contrawound toroidal helical antenna).;The results of this study indicate the CTHA's input impedance changes as a damped sinusoid function of the distance between it and the metallic ground plane. For equivalent distances …

Fault-Injection Through Model Checking Via Naive Assumptions About State Machine Synchrony Semantics, Sabina Joseph Dec 1998

Fault-Injection Through Model Checking Via Naive Assumptions About State Machine Synchrony Semantics, Sabina Joseph

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Software behavior can be defined as the action or reaction of software to external and/or internal conditions. Software behavior is an important characteristic in determining software quality. Fault-injection is a method to assess software quality through its' behavior. Our research involves a fault-injection process combined with model checking. We introduce a concept of "naive assumptions" which exploits the assumptions of execution order, synchrony and fairness. "Naive assumptions" are applied to inject faults into our models. We use linear temporal logic to examine the model for anomalous behaviors. This method shows us the benefits of using fault-injection and model checking and …
