Aim and objectives To explore the thoughts and experiences of aged care nurses following participation in an ageing‐suit simulation intervention. Background Globally, people are living longer, and for nurses, there are increasing challenges to meet the needs of the higher numbers of older people in hospital. Educating nurses to understand the ageing process and the experiences of older people in hospital is crucial to addressing these challenges. Ageing‐suits were identified as a possible approach to assist with these educational needs. Design This study adopted a qualitative descriptive design. Method A convenience sample of nurses (n = 15) were selected from …

Queen Garnet plum (QGP), known for its high levels of anthocyanins, is a hybrid of the Japanese plum developed in Queensland, Australia. Anthocyanins provide the red, blue and purple pigments in plants with demonstrated beneficial health effects. This study hypothesized that low-dose anthocyanin QGP intake will have a significant positive effect on cognition, blood pressure and gut microbiota in healthy older adults. A randomized crossover trial was conducted to determine the effect and within subject variance on cognition and 24 hr. ambulatory blood pressure in older adults without cognitive impairment following daily consumption of 200 mL low-dose anthocyanin (5 mg/100 …

Food and beverage packaging is increasingly used in hospital food service provision. Previous research has identified that the packaging used in New South Wales hospitals can be difficult to open by older adults. As older adults experience high rates of malnutrition, it is important to understand the effects of packaging on actual consumption of food and fluids. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of hospital food and beverage packaging on dietary intakes of 62 independently living older people (65 years and over) in a university simulated hospital ward in NSW, Australia. Participants were allocated to either …

Aims: To compare the differences between acupoint pressure, abdominal massage and laxatives in treatment of constipation for residents in two nursing homes. Background: There is lack of evidence on the utility of complementary therapies in the management of constipation among older adults. Design: Quasi-experimental. Methods: A total of 90 participants from two nursing homes in Taiwan were assigned to three groups: the control group (with laxatives only), group I (with laxatives and abdominal massage) and group II (with laxatives, acupoint pressure therapy [APT] and abdominal massage). The intervention was performed over 10 days. A double-blind technique was applied in both …

Background Postoperative delirium is a major complication associated with anaesthesia and surgery, more commonly seen in older people. Aims The aims of this study were to explore the knowledge and understanding of anaesthetists and nurses involved in anaesthesia through their responses to two case scenarios of postoperative delirium experienced by older people. Methods A 30-item online survey was sent to 500 potential respondents. Results Two hundred and twenty-six practitioners from Australia, New Zealand and Scotland responded. Most had no workplace protocols for anaesthesia planning in older people. There was substantial variability in practice in relation to postoperative delirium screening, detection, …
