What explains U.S. family law? What are the origins of the current chaos and controversy in the field, the home of some of the most vituperative debates in public policy? To answer these questions, this Article identifies and examines family law's foundational principles. It undertakes a conceptual analysis of the legal practices that govern families. This analysis has yet to be done, and its absence hamstrings constructive thought on our family law. The Article develops a typology that conceptualizes U.S. family law and exposes its underlying principles. First, it identifies the significant elements, or rules, of family law. Second, it …

Study Design: A retrospective, descriptive study of clients with shoulder dysfunction referred to physical therapy. Objectives: To (1) describe the clinical and functional outcomes of clients with shoulder dysfunction following outpatient physical therapy, and (2) to compare the outcomes by type of shoulder dysfunction. Background: Although individuals with shoulder dysfunction are commonly referred to physical therapy, few large descriptive studies regarding outcomes following physical therapy are available. Methods and Measures: Data for 878 clients (468 female, 410 male) were retrieved and analyzed. Active Noise Control Of Stageloader Noise In Longwall Mining, Jeremy M. Slagley, Steven Guffey

With the large-scale mechanization inherent to the mining industry, noise-induced hearing loss remains a major concern. As part of on-going efforts to develop engineering controls to reduce noise levels in longwall mining, active noise control experiments were conducted above ground on a modified non-working stageloader. Recorded underground stageloader noise was broadcast into the above ground stageloader. The result was an average 7 dBA reduction when the active noise control was applied. These results suggest the possibility that active noise reduction can be a useful means to reduce stageloader noise if the control system can be made sufficiently rugged. The study …

Interdependent Consumer Choice And The Oval Of Cassini, Aharon Hibshoosh

This paper follows a theory of Nicosia and Hibshoosh regarding the choice by social consumer unit who is facing conflicting institutional norms. The paper presents a duo-centric consumer residential choice model with special disutility function. The properties of the Oval of Cassini play a key role in the parstmonious modeling of this phenomenon and in the analysis. Specifically, we develop a residential consumer choice model where the consumer utility is affected by conflicted demands for activities of work and non-work institutions. The consumer unit is simultaneously attracted to two predetermined centers of work and non-work, while making its residence choice. …
