Comparison Of Mercury Dynamics In High Arctic Lakes, Karista Elizabeth Hudelson Nov 2020

Comparison Of Mercury Dynamics In High Arctic Lakes, Karista Elizabeth Hudelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Arctic lakes and their watersheds are being simultaneously subjected to the deposition of atmospheric pollutants such as mercury (Hg), and warming. Once Hg enters an ecosystem, it may become methylated, greatly increasing its toxicity and reducing organisms’ ability to eliminate it. Mercury is bioaccumulative and thus found at high concentrations in land-locked Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) and other top predators. In sediment, Hg methylation rate is temperature-dependent, and [Hg] in Arctic predatory fish has been correlated with trends in air temperature. Despite reductions in Hg emissions in North America and Europe, [Hg] continues to rise in some Arctic species. The …

Community Composition Of Aquatic Invertebrates Along Dissolved Oxygen Gradients In Lake Huron Coastal Wetland Wet Meadows, Danielle Elizabeth Gunsch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wetlands are an ecotone between terrestrial and aquatic environments and therefore support a diverse and unique flora and fauna. Macroinvertebrates make up a substantial portion of the biodiversity. The relationship between aquatic invertebrate community composition and the association with submergent and emergent macrophyte biomass is relatively well documented. However, the constraints imposed by conditions in wet meadow zones – areas that are intermittently flooded but whose soils are typically water-saturated and anoxic are less well understood. I investigated the relative importance of dissolved oxygen along the water depth gradient and its influenced on invertebrate community composition in comparison to the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diagnosing the correct types of the disease is essential to the effective treatment. The diagnosis may not always be straightforward from the biological tests especially during the early stages of the disease. Human body responds to the disease by producing certain proteins. If we know which genes are active, that is, which proteins are being produced, we can more accurately classify disease subtypes. This study is based on the genetic information extracted from the patient’s biological sample and is used to classify cancer subtypes. Among different types of genetic data, we consider RNA-seq data in this thesis. Studies based on …

Progress Towards The Synthesis Of Carbohydrate-Based Biomedical And Material-Science Relevant Molecules, Seyed Iraj Sadraei Nov 2020

Progress Towards The Synthesis Of Carbohydrate-Based Biomedical And Material-Science Relevant Molecules, Seyed Iraj Sadraei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cancer cells express unique carbohydrate signatures on their surfaces known as tumour-associated carbohydrate antigens (TACAs). These antigens are not typically found on healthy cells and therefore are promising targets for immunotherapy using adap-tive immune response tools. If the immune system could theoretically be “trained” to tar-get this molecule, then the immune system could be used to help eradicate any cancer cells from the host. A problem with carbohydrate-based targets is they are not stable in the body because of their inherent acetal functionality: the glycosidic bond. This research aims to remove the unstable acetal functionality in carbohydrates by replacing the …

Molecular Techniques To Advance The Conservation Of Imperilled Freshwater Fishes, Ryland George Corchis-Scott Nov 2020

Molecular Techniques To Advance The Conservation Of Imperilled Freshwater Fishes, Ryland George Corchis-Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The conservation of imperilled fishes should be informed by species-specific genetic information. However, there are a lack of molecular data for most species at risk with the development of species-specific primer acting as a barrier to genetic evaluations. Here, I describe the development and preliminary testing of a set of microsatellite markers for the imperilled Lake Chubsucker (Erimyzon sucetta). These markers are apparently diploid, are polymorphic, and have been demonstrated to amplify individuals from across the species’ North American range. The microsatellite markers described in this thesis have applications for population genetics as well as informing source population selection for …

Perception And Performance Of Working Memory: Insights Into Test Anxiety, Rebecca Grossman Nov 2020

Perception And Performance Of Working Memory: Insights Into Test Anxiety, Rebecca Grossman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Test anxiety is a common phenomenon that can be detrimental to cognitive performance, academic achievement, and mental health. One mechanism consistently identified as playing a role in such deficits is working memory. While many studies have investigated the relationship between working memory and test anxiety, approaches to measuring working memory have varied between using assorted standardized behavioural measures and self-report inventories. While self-report inventories are often found to be valid, there is some evidence suggesting that subjective appraisal of functioning might not be accurate in all contexts. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether self-appraisal of working …

Visual inspection results are highly dependent on the operator’s way of analyzing corrosion and operator’s experience. Thus, visual inspection method lack …

Control Of Four-Wire Inverter-Interfaced Dgs For Accurate Fault Type Classification, Wael Radwan Nov 2020

Control Of Four-Wire Inverter-Interfaced Dgs For Accurate Fault Type Classification, Wael Radwan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inverter-interfaced distributed generators (IIDGs) generate fault currents that are different from those generated by conventional synchronous generators (SGs). As a result, commercial relays—that utilize current-angle-based phase selection measurements—misidentify faulty phase(s), which adversely impact the grid resiliency and reliability. In this thesis, a new control scheme is proposed to regulate the sequence components of the IIDG currents during unbalanced faults to ensure accurate fault type classification by commercial relays. The proposed controller controls the positive-sequence and negative-sequence currents in the dq-frame with a decoupled synchronous reference frame (DDSRF) based phase-locked loop (PLL) for components extraction and synchronization. It also uses a …

Testing The Circadian Regulation Of The Jak/Stat Signaling Pathway, Daniela Bianca Bachetti Oct 2020

Testing The Circadian Regulation Of The Jak/Stat Signaling Pathway, Daniela Bianca Bachetti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many organisms coordinate behavioural and physiological processes with the Earth’s 24-hour light/dark cycle. This cycle, the circadian rhythm, is anticipated by the circadian clock, a 24-hour timekeeper that is comprised of a transcription-translation feedback loop. The clock regulates the transcription of genes, which can influence the expression of oscillating circadian behaviours, such as sleep/wake. Maintaining tissue homeostasis is an important process, especially in tissues with high cellular turnover rates, such as the intestine. Involved in this intestinal regenerative response is the Janus Kinase/Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway. Damaged cells or exposure to a stressful environment will activate …

Development Of Graphene-Filled Fluoropolymer Composite Coatings For Condensing Heat Exchangers, Mitchell Jacob Cierpisz Oct 2020

Development Of Graphene-Filled Fluoropolymer Composite Coatings For Condensing Heat Exchangers, Mitchell Jacob Cierpisz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Low-temperature waste heat recovery employs condensing heat exchangers to recover both sensible and latent heats. Due to the condensation of flue gases within these heat exchangers, they are subjected to severe corrosion. Perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) has been applied as a barrier layer on the surfaces of these heat exchangers for the prevention of corrosion. However, PFA has exhibited poor thermal properties and durability, which are requirements in low-temperature heat recovery applications. In this thesis, carbon-based nano-materials (8 nm and 60 nm thickness graphene particles and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, MWCNT) were incorporated into fluoropolymer (PFA) powders to generate thermally conductive and corrosion …

Gas Migration Testing At Abandoned Well Sites In Western Canada, Kelsey Lauren Friesen Oct 2020

Gas Migration Testing At Abandoned Well Sites In Western Canada, Kelsey Lauren Friesen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fugitive releases from natural gas wells are a persistent issue in the oil and gas sector and comprises 27% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions. Natural gas within this sector accounts for 44% of Canada’s methane releases and 70% of Alberta’s. Releases from wells are documented; however, knowledge gaps persist for abandoned assets. When fugitive gases are suspected, regulatory standards require gas migration testing. This thesis presents the beginnings of developing ‘best practices’ in testing recommendations to better estimate emissions from abandoned wells. Testing requires detection of stray gases utilizing a worker-safety portable handheld multi-gas monitor; however, our work shows this …

Author Name Disambiguation Using Co-Training, Yan Gao Oct 2020

Author Name Disambiguation Using Co-Training, Yan Gao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the community of bibliometrics, author name ambiguity means that author's name is not a reliable identier for associating academic papers with their authors. Author name ambiguity has been the problem in bibliometrics and service providers like Google Scholar, generating a domain of study call Author Name Disambiguation (AND). Author name ambiguity is often tackled using classication techniques, where labeled papers are provided, and papers are assigned to correct authors according to the paper text and paper citations. When applying classication methods to author name disambiguation, two issues stand out: one is that a paper has multiple views (paper text …

What Trying To Forget Tells Us About Trying To Remember: A Link Between Associative Memory And Directed Forgetting, Brette E. Lansue Burns Oct 2020

What Trying To Forget Tells Us About Trying To Remember: A Link Between Associative Memory And Directed Forgetting, Brette E. Lansue Burns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much of directed forgetting research has pitted two competing hypotheses against each other: selective rehearsal and retrieval inhibition. Primarily, the current work explores a novel link between directed forgetting and associative memory, such that the item and cue are unitized and encoded together at study and at test, participants make their old/new judgement based on this association. Specifically, a more typical directed forgetting procedure where participants were told to remember specific items (R-cue) and forget others (F-cue) was compared with a procedure where participants were told to remember which cue (Blue-cue vs. Yellow-cue) was associated with each item. At test, …
