The Future Of Maine's Forests Under Alternative Socioeconomic, Climate And Conservation Pathways, Jianheng Zhao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Maine is a historically important timber supply region in North America and understanding the potential change in forestlands and their product industries affected by climate change and various socio-economic conditions can better improve the forest healthy and sustain a sustainable product industry. A statistical harvest choice model for the state of Maine was developed in chapter 1. It was estimated using a multinomial logit model of two products, under varying management intensities, and ownership classifications across varying market conditions. Results indicate that stumpage prices have a significant effect on forest landowners' harvest decisions and that the expansion of conservation land …

The Effect That Testing Has On Nondeclarative Memory, David Smith
The Effect That Testing Has On Nondeclarative Memory, David Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Testing has been shown to improve long-term memory retention by decreasing the amount of material forgotten, a phenomenon known as the testing effect. This positive impact of testing has been shown using direct tests of memory that require declarative memory, things like memorizing word-pairs and single-word lists. This dissertation is the first research to investigate how testing impacts nondeclarative memory using three experiments. The first and second experiment utilize the word fragment completion task to measure the effect that testing has on words learned via methodology thought to recruit either declarative or nondeclarative memory. The third experiment utilizes a probabilistic …

An Experimental Investigation Of Alternative Wave Attenuation Mechanisms For A Modular Breakwater, Richard Perry
An Experimental Investigation Of Alternative Wave Attenuation Mechanisms For A Modular Breakwater, Richard Perry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Global warming and sea level rise threaten to render traditional coastal protection structures as less effective. Floating breakwaters offer the advantages of adapting to rising sea level, allowing important material transport to occur, and being able to deploy and adapt to varying environmental conditions (seabed, depth, etc.). Traditional floating breakwaters typically consist of reflective concrete structures that are limited semi-sheltered locations. This research aimed to construct floating breakwaters out of lightweight materials with a smaller footprint while utilizing alternative attenuation mechanisms. Three breakwaters consisting of a box, beach, and pipe designs were constructed at 1:40 scale and tested in a …
Mechanical Strength Assessment Of Pharmaceutical Compacts With Refractive Index Measurements From Terahertz Time Of Flight Spectroscopy, Shikhar Mohan
Mechanical Strength Assessment Of Pharmaceutical Compacts With Refractive Index Measurements From Terahertz Time Of Flight Spectroscopy, Shikhar Mohan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The mechanical strength of pharmaceutical compacts is often considered as a critical quality attribute for roller and tablet compaction processes. Most traditional mechanical strength tests are destructive, thus, preventing further material testing. This thesis expands on the application of terahertz time of flight spectroscopy (THz-TOF) as a nondestructive technique for assessing mechanical strength. This technique is able to extract the refractive index; which is a function of porosity and crystallinity of the solid. Thus, it was hypothesized that refractive index measurements from terahertz time of flight spectroscopy are directly related to porosity; therefore, these nondestructive measurements are able to correlate …

Holistic Monitoring Of Maine Sea Lice (Lepeoptheirus Salmonis, Kroyer, 1837) Sensitivities To Therapies: Developing A Novel Assay To Examine Lice Behavior, Kathryn Liberman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sea lice (Lepeoptheirus salmonis) present significant economic and animal welfare challenges to salmon aquaculture globally. Chemical delousing agents are used in many countries, with each nation eventually reporting sea lice developing reduced sensitivities to treatments. While some countries have in place sea lice sensitivity monitoring programs, that is not the case in Maine, USA. Although chemical delousing agents are not currently used in Maine, they have been used in the past and are currently used in neighboring Canadian salmon farms. Different bay management areas (BMAs) were sampled during different seasons to determine if there is a seasonal or spatial component …
The Maine Teacher Resilience Study: Using Sem To Create A Teacher Costs To Caring Resilience Model, Sherry Pineau Brown
The Maine Teacher Resilience Study: Using Sem To Create A Teacher Costs To Caring Resilience Model, Sherry Pineau Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For decades, researchers have understood the deleterious emotional and psychological effects that can result from working with individuals who have experienced trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) including vicarious traumatization, compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress (STS), burnout, and an intent to leave the profession (Figley, 1995; McCann & Pearlman, 1990; Stamm, 1999). Figley (1995) deemed such effects as an almost inevitable “cost to caring” (p.1) for those who have experienced adversity. Teachers, however, have been largely left out of the discussion surrounding such effects. The purpose of this quantitative study is two-fold. First, the purpose is to understand the extent …
Evaluating Tlb (Translation Lookaside Buffer) Performance Overhead For Nvm (Non-Volatile Memory) Hybrid System, Xiang Guo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the non-volatile memory (NVM) technology offers near-DRAM performance and near-disk capacity, NVM has emerged as a new storage class. Conventional file systems, designed for hard disk drives or solid-state drives, need to be re-examined or even re-designed for NVM storage. For example, new file systems such as NOVA, HMFS, HMVFS and Ext4-DAX, have been developed and implemented to fully leverage NVM’s characteristics, such as fast fine-grained access. This thesis research uses a variety of I/O workloads to evaluate the performance overhead of the TLB (translation lookaside buffer) in various file systems on emulated NVM storage systems, in which NVM …
Optical Signatures Of Plankton In The Open Ocean: From Individual Cells To Global Patterns, Nils Haentjens
Optical Signatures Of Plankton In The Open Ocean: From Individual Cells To Global Patterns, Nils Haentjens
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Marine plankton ecosystems play a major role on Earth, having implications for the global carbon cycle and the food-web structures. Ocean color satellites and networks of autonomous platforms equipped with optical sensors are the primary tools used to study phytoplankton dynamics. They provide long term records while offering a synoptic view of our oceans, enabling to study impact of climate variability on planktonic ecosystems. Interpretation of these observations rely heavily on optical theory and how light propagating through the water is affected by particles who absorb and scatter light (e.g. phytoplankton, sediments). However, the complexity of the optical properties of …

In the second part of the …
Sustainable Production Of Feed For Recirculating Aquaculture Using Black Solider Flies And Microalgae, Patrick Erbland
Sustainable Production Of Feed For Recirculating Aquaculture Using Black Solider Flies And Microalgae, Patrick Erbland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The demand for high-quality, nutritious food continues to increase as human populations grow. As wild fisheries are depleted, aquaculture production is growing to meet the demand for seafood. Sustainable alternatives to wild caught fish meal are increasingly valued for aquaculture feed production. Microalgae and insect larvae are both valuable sources of fatty acids in aquaculture feed. Black soldier fly larvae, Hermetia illucens (L.) are used to convert organic waste streams into insect-based animal feeds. We tested their ability to retain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from feeding substrates, which has important implications for their use …
Use Of Gis To Find Optimum Locations For Anaerobic Digestion Or Composting Facilities In Maine, Usha Humagain
Use Of Gis To Find Optimum Locations For Anaerobic Digestion Or Composting Facilities In Maine, Usha Humagain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As per US EPA, in 2017, 41 million tons of food waste was generated, but only 6.3% was diverted from landfills (US EPA, 2020). When landfilled or incinerated, organic waste (food waste, sludge, manure, agricultural waste) causes environmental pollution through greenhouse gas emissions, land, water, and air pollution. In contrast, if we compost or digest organic waste, we can generate soil additives and a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide gas to produce electricity or energy. Both digestion and composting reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve the land through additives, and boost the economy. Many countries are adopting anaerobic digestion and …

The Rhetoric Of Jimmy Carter: Renewing America’S Confidence In Civic Leadership Through Speech And Political Education, Christopher Bondi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
July 15, 2019 marked the fortieth anniversary of President Jimmy Carter’s “Crisis of Confidence” speech, a catalyst for what became an often overlooked yet significant turning point in the nation’s history. Carter’s words were both poignant and pointed as he calmly, yet directly, addressed the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels and engagement in narcissistic practices that led to a coveting of material goods. In an examination of the events that shaped this historical moment, this dissertation contends that, despite President Carter’s attempt to steer America in a more environmentally and socially conscious direction, the nation instead acquiesced to Ronald Reagan’s …
Pharmacological Characterization Of Novel Serotonin Transporter Inhibitors Identified Through Computational Structure-Based Virtual Screening, Michael Wasko
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Depression is a mental health disorder affecting greater than 350 million people worldwide with roughly 7% of the United States population diagnosed as of 2017. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been the mainstay of pharmacotherapies for depression for the last 40 years. The SSRIs target the serotonin transporter (SERT), a monoamine transporter (MAT) responsible for terminating serotonergic neurotransmission. The SSRIs are not perfect therapeutics and suffer from delayed response times, inconsistent efficacy among patients, and often produce intolerable side effects. Therefore, a strong need exists to develop new antidepressants that are more efficacious and have fewer adverse effects. …

While much is written on organizational ethics in healthcare, this dissertation uniquely links organizational ethics and stakeholder theory to the ethical accountability of leadership to their distinct, vulnerable stakeholder communities. It does so by examining the healthcare organization’s moral agency in relation to stakeholder theory and applies those considerations to three major stakeholder categories: confidentiality and privacy of healthcare information, research and attention to specific pediatric populations, and ethics of care concerning the …
Railspace: A Geocritical Study Of The Railroad Through American Literature And Culture, Michael A. Smith
Railspace: A Geocritical Study Of The Railroad Through American Literature And Culture, Michael A. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation uses geocriticism to argue that the American railroad is best understood as a set of discursively constructed railspaces formed through a variety of viewpoints, a polysensorial awareness of space, and stratified social relationships and power struggles. This study takes up four railspaces, the constituent texts of which demonstrate how intertextual discourse shapes and is shaped by the railroad. The observation car, charted through California Zephyr advertisements and Muriel Rukeyser’s “Campaign,” is an apparatus that produces perpetual spectacle. Three novels—Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser, Double Indemnity by James M. Cain, and Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith—and …

The Haven: A Clinical Ethnography Of A Farm-Based Therapeutic Community, Monica Lawson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Therapeutic communities are communal spaces where individuals live for an extended period in hopes of recovering from personal crises, or while coping with severe mental illness. They provide a humanistic alternative to inpatient hospitalization. Although they are seldom studied, even less is known about farm-based therapeutic communities in the United States, where communal work is viewed as central to recovery. This dissertation examines the experience of living and working at the Haven. Originally conceived as a farm-based community where suffering individuals could experience reprieve from the demands of the “working world,” and heal by living in community, recent changes in …
Melatonin-Tamoxifen Drug Conjugates As Breast Cancer Drugs: Pharmacological Evaluation In Phenotypically Diverse Breast Cancer Models And Pharmacokinetic Assessment In Liver Microsome And Female Mouse Models, Mahmud Hasan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tamoxifen is a first-generation selective estrogen receptor modulator, which reduces the risk of both invasive and non-invasive breast cancer (BC) as well as tumor recurrence in several clinical trials. However, chronic use of tamoxifen can increase uterine cancer risk and induce tamoxifen resistance. In past studies, melatonin alone reversed tamoxifen resistance induced by light exposure at night in rodents. This study demonstrates that melatonin or melatonin-based ligands (e.g., melatonin-tamoxifen drug conjugates) may be novel BC therapies that are efficacious and free of side effects. To investigate this further, five melatonin-tamoxifen drug conjugates with different linker sizes were synthesized and screened …

Examining The Intersectionality Of Religious Faith, Spirituality, And Healthcare Communication, Felix Okeke
Examining The Intersectionality Of Religious Faith, Spirituality, And Healthcare Communication, Felix Okeke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is my own contribution in responding to the concern raised by certain communication scholars. Their concern was that little research and few publications have been done in the communication field by communication scholars that trace the relationship among religious faith, spirituality, and healthcare communication. While Parrott (2004) describes this apparent neglect as “collective amnesia,” others label it “religion blindness.” Thus, in trying to trace this relationship, this project uses Christian, biblical, and bioethics backgrounds to establish the value, sacredness, and dignity of human life, since these concepts make healthcare and healthcare communication necessary in the first place. These …

Effectiveness Of An Interdependent Group Contingency With Randomization Using The Ipad, Chelsea Gyke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Classroom management, although considered one of the essentials of the optimal learning experience, is often a challenge for teachers. Certain classroom management strategies, such as group contingency interventions and token economies, are evidence-based strategies to aid teachers in gaining successful management of the classroom. The utilization of Class Dojo, a popular classroom management website, as a mechanism to implement an interdependent group contingency (IGC) intervention with randomized components may increase both the effectiveness of the intervention and the social validity of the intervention when compared to a manual implementation.
Participants included students in an elementary school self-contained special education classroom …
