A Correlational Study Of Emotional Intelligence And Aggression In Adolescents., Andrew William. Johnston Jan 2003

A Correlational Study Of Emotional Intelligence And Aggression In Adolescents., Andrew William. Johnston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between adolescent emotional intelligence and adolescent aggression was investigated. Seventy one 7th and 8th grade students participated in the study. The students ranged in age from 11 to 14 years. All subjects completed the Baron Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version (Baron EQ-i:YV) as a measure of emotional intelligence. They also completed an Aggression Questionnaire (Buss & Perry, 1992, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 63, 452--459). Pearson product-moment correlations were examined indicating an overall significant negative correlation between Emotional Intelligence and Aggression (r = -.693, p < .001). Stepwise multiple regression analysis was used to further investigate relationships between components of Aggression and Emotional Intelligence. Analysis indicated that Stress Management (beta = -.736, p < .001) and Intrapersonal (beta = -.268, p < .001) measures were significant predictors of Physical Aggression. A second stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that Anger (beta = .591, p < .001) and Hostility (beta = .292, p < .05) were also significant predictors of Physical Aggression. A one-way analysis of variance indicated significant gender differences with males scoring higher on Physical Aggression (p < .001) and Total Aggression (p < .01) and females scoring higher on Emotional Intelligence (p < .05). A Hybrid Load Balancing Algorithm For Coarse-Grained Applications., Xinyu. Gan Jan 2003

A Hybrid Load Balancing Algorithm For Coarse-Grained Applications., Xinyu. Gan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A non-preemptive hybrid load balancing algorithm is proposed for heterogeneous distributed computing environment, since no single load balancing algorithm works well for all kinds of applications and environments. The agents' computing capabilities may also change during runtime because of the background load. This algorithm makes use of the idea of several sub-algorithms. The hybrid model initially classifies the computers and jobs into different groups. Two priority queues are maintained at each worker to record the processes' estimated computing time and the real time. Based on historical experiences, a centralized scheduler can dynamically change the parameters in order to improve the …

Comparing Wais-Iii Profiles Of Traumatic Brain Injury And Chronic Pain., Cherisse Margo. Mckay Jan 2003

Comparing Wais-Iii Profiles Of Traumatic Brain Injury And Chronic Pain., Cherisse Margo. Mckay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common neuropsychological phenomenon characterized by both behavioural and cognitive sequelae, the most common of which include working memory and information processing deficits. To improve its usefulness as a neuropsychological measure, the newest revision of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, the WAIS-III, developed specific tasks tapping these deficits (e.g., Symbol Search, Letter-Number Sequencing). Despite considerable research examining WAIS performance in TBI sufferers, previous research failed to compare TBI sufferers to other clinical groups with observed processing speed deficits, such as chronic pain sufferers. This study compared the WAIS-III profiles of both mild and moderate-severe TBI …

Computing The Minimum Perimeter Triangle Enclosing A Convex Polygon: Theory And Implementation., Anna Valentinovna. Medvedeva Jan 2003

Computing The Minimum Perimeter Triangle Enclosing A Convex Polygon: Theory And Implementation., Anna Valentinovna. Medvedeva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Geometric optimization, an important field of computational geometry, finds the best possible solution to a computational problem that involves geometric objects. An attractive fundamental problem in this area is one of approximating a convex n-gon with a simpler convex k-gon, where k < n, and the area or the perimeter of the approximate object is minimized. This problem arises in a wide range of applications, such as geographic information systems (GIS), spatial databases, pattern recognition, and computer graphics, to name but a few. The approximation of convex polygons with their respective enclosing triangles is a particularly interesting problem; however, finding an optimal linear time solution for computing the minimum perimeter triangle enclosing a convex polygon was a long-standing open problem, which turned out to be more difficult than determining an enclosing triangle of minimal area. In this thesis, we suggest some theoretical and practical justifications for the linear time complexity of a recently proposed optimal solution and provide an efficient and robust implementation of that solution. Constructing A Reproducible Testing Environment For Distributed Java Applications., Kun Wang Jan 2003

Constructing A Reproducible Testing Environment For Distributed Java Applications., Kun Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The emergence of the global Internet, wireless data communications, and the availability of powerful computers is enabling a new generation of distributed and concurrent systems. However, the inherent complexity of such systems introduces many new challenges in system testing and maintenance. One of the major problems in testing such systems is that executions with internal non-deterministic choices make the testing procedure non-repeatable. A natural solution is to artificially force the execution of a program to take desired paths so that a test can be reproduced. However, with geographically distributed processes and heterogeneous platform architectures, distributed systems have imposed new challenges …

Data Warehouse Stream View Update With Hash Filter., Mohammed Shariful Islam Jan 2003

Data Warehouse Stream View Update With Hash Filter., Mohammed Shariful Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A data warehouse usually contains large amounts of information representing an integration of base data from one or more external data sources over a long period of time to provide fast-query response time. It stores materialized views which provide aggregation (SUM, MIX, MIN, COUNT and AVG) on some measure attributes of interest for data warehouse users. The process of updating materialized views in response to the modification of the base data is called materialized view maintenance. Some data warehouse application domains, like stock markets, credit cards, automated banking and web log domains depend on data sources updated as continuous streams …

Depth Recovery Using A Plenoptic Camera., Mohamed. Amtoun Jan 2003

Depth Recovery Using A Plenoptic Camera., Mohamed. Amtoun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Depth recovery is a central problem in Computer Vision. Stereopsis is one of the most extensively investigated techniques amidst the approaches addressing it. Though sufficiently accurate, stereopsis is highly dependent on the success of point correspondence, an ill-posed problem that is known to suffer from a number of underlying difficulties. Single-lens stereo systems emerged recently as an effective means to thwart some of the problems of correspondence. The plenoptic camera in particular, has a special image formation geometry that claims to resolve the correspondence ambiguities and simplify depth recovery. However, to our knowledge, prior to this work, no study has …

Down Regulation Of Gene Expression In Toxoplasma Gondii By Engineered Delta Ribozymes., Ju. Sheng Jan 2003

Down Regulation Of Gene Expression In Toxoplasma Gondii By Engineered Delta Ribozymes., Ju. Sheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Delta ribozyme is a RNA enzyme derived from the genome of hepatitis delta virus (HDV). It can specifically cleave a RNA substrate and is the only ribozyme that can function naturally in human cells. These properties make the delta ribozyme attractive as a gene modulator. Toxoplasma gondii, a pathogenic parasite to humans and pets, has been used for genetic studies. Genes encoding uracil phosphoribosyltransferase (UPRT) and hypoxanthine-xanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HXGPRT), which are the operative enzymes of the pyrimidine and purine salvage pathway, respectively, in T. gondii , were chosen for the study of the down regulation effect of delta ribozymes. Different …

An Object-Oriented Analysis Technique For Developing Object-Oriented Simulations In Silk., Lia. Zannier Jan 2003

An Object-Oriented Analysis Technique For Developing Object-Oriented Simulations In Silk., Lia. Zannier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Simulation is very popular as an analysis tool for complex systems. A new paradigm shift towards object oriented simulations is hoping to make simulations even more powerful and accessible. However, in order for those not familiar with object oriented techniques to join this shift, methods must be developed for them to build object oriented simulations, until they acquire an understanding of this programming paradigm. This is an attempt to develop a procedure for just such novice model builders. This thesis begins with some background on object oriented paradigm concepts. It then provides an overview of several different object oriented analysis …

Camouflaged Liaisons: The Social Organization Of Turkish Male Sexual Minorities., Tarik. Bereket Jan 2003

Camouflaged Liaisons: The Social Organization Of Turkish Male Sexual Minorities., Tarik. Bereket

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This ethnographic study analyses the discourses of twenty Turkish men who have sex with other men, aiming to make sense of discernable patternings in their most intimate lives. The research documents the meanings ascribed to same-sex behavior by various participants, and sheds light on how homosexual desire is structured by the existing gender structure in Turkish society as a whole. The broader social and sexual culture within which discourses around anal intercourse are articulated show connections between homosexuality and heterosexuality, masculinity and femininity, and eventually, sexual penetrability and receptivity---in which all categories reveal certain 'gendered' power relations. My attempts to …

Can The Sociodramatic Theories Of Social Change Of Boal Be Used To Change Intermediate Student Outlook On Life? (Augusto Boal)., Deanna Marie. Pecaski Mclennan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined whether weekly drama sessions based on the sociodramatic theories of Boal (1985) could be used to change intermediate student outlook on life. Grade Eight students participated in ten, forty-minute weekly drama sessions. Each session consisted of activities based on the work "Theatre of the Oppressed," created by Augusto Boal. This was a pre-existing group of "at-risk" adolescents. They had been identified by school staff as being "at-risk" due to behavioural problems in the classroom, lack of motivation in classroom activities, social problems in the classroom and playground, and lack of respect towards peers and/or staff. Often these …
