Effects Of Frost Heave On A Soil Nail Wall In Brunswick, Maine, Sandra Mcrae Duchesne Jan 2003

Effects Of Frost Heave On A Soil Nail Wall In Brunswick, Maine, Sandra Mcrae Duchesne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soil nail walls have been used as retaining structures worldwide since the early 1970s. The technology is particularly well suited for constructing walls in areas with limited overhead clearance and maneuvering room for heavy equipment, such as highway bridge underpasses. However, designers have been reluctant to experiment with soil nailing in areas with cold-weather climates and frost-susceptible soils, due to the lack of quantifiable data on the behavior of these walls when subjected to freezing conditions. The University of Maine collaborated with the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) in a research initiative on the first soil nail wall project in …

Anthropogenic Influences And Meteorological Effects: How They Are Changing The Sand Beaches In Southern Maine, Heather W. Heinze Dec 2001

Anthropogenic Influences And Meteorological Effects: How They Are Changing The Sand Beaches In Southern Maine, Heather W. Heinze

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although sand beaches in southern Maine comprise only a small segment of the coastline, they are economically important to the state. From September 1999-March 2001, volunteers made monthly topographic profiles along nine beaches in southern Maine to monitor changes. The volunteers used the Emery Method of beach profiling to take simultaneous measurements at spring low tide. The beaches are significantly different with respect to physiography, incident wave energy and direction, available sediment supply and extent of development. An average of the profiles for each category demonstrates that the undeveloped beaches experienced regular seasonal fluctuations and a consistent berm elevation from …

Maine Hospice Volunteers: A Study Of Motivations, Death Awareness And Religious Beliefs, Anne F. Donovan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Volunteers are an essential part of the hospice movement, which is designed to provide services to the terminally ill, their families, and friends, in a manner that allows death to be as dignified and peaceful as possible. Motivations for volunteering, attitudes about death and dying, and demographic characteristics were assessed in this survey study of Maine hospice volunteers (573 females, 128 males). The extent to which religious and spiritual beliefs were associated with volunteers’ ability to cope with the many aspects of death and dying that they confront were also examined. Based on responses to a standardized instrument, the Collett-Lester …

Freedom Of Commerce: The History And Archaeology Of Trade At St. Castin’S Habitation 1670-1701, Brooke Ann Manross Dec 1994

Freedom Of Commerce: The History And Archaeology Of Trade At St. Castin’S Habitation 1670-1701, Brooke Ann Manross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Settled on the often disputed border of New England and Acadia during the last quarter of the 17th century, the Baron Jean Vincent de l’Abbadie de St. Castin operated a trading post at the confluence of the Penobscot and Bagaduce Rivers near the modem town of Castin, Maine. Castin was an entrepreneur who traded with the Abenaki Indians of Acadia and Maine for peltry. Although he was French, Castin exchanged this peltry with Massachusetts merchants in order to get the European trade items necessary to supply his Abenaki clientele. Castin preferred trade to warfare, nevertheless, he was often embroiled in …

Osgood Bradbury: A Biobibliographical Study, Francesca J. Ruggieri Aug 1972

Osgood Bradbury: A Biobibliographical Study, Francesca J. Ruggieri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The writer became interested in the lack of information relating to the little-known Maine author of the nineteenth century, Osgood Bradbury. This biobibliographical study carries out a review of his life and work. Bradbury is almost completely unknown in Maine literary circles in spite of having written nearly sixty novels. Many aspects of his life are as nebulous as many of the characters in his own stories. Even his birthdate is suspect, although there is some evidence to indicate that he was born in 1795, in New Gloucester, Maine. The writer found no evidence of his whereabouts from his birthdate …

Separation Of Maine From Massachusetts 1785-1820, Ronald Fillmore Banks Jan 1966

Separation Of Maine From Massachusetts 1785-1820, Ronald Fillmore Banks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The movement to separate Maine from Massachusetts commenced in 178£ as an "anticolonial" movement. Led at first by conservatives who desired independence for Maine in order that they could become leaders in the style of their political brethren who led Massachusetts, the movement was eventually taken over by men such as William King, John Holmes, Albion K. Parris, William Pitt Preble, and John Chandler, all of whom formed the leadership of the Jeffersonian- Republicans in Maine.

These leaders of the Republicans of Maine desired independence in order to be freed from the economic and political constraints placed on their activities …

A Study Of Maine Central Railroad Passenger Service Since 1900, Henry G. Stenberg Jun 1965

A Study Of Maine Central Railroad Passenger Service Since 1900, Henry G. Stenberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A general study was made of the Maine Central railroad’s passenger service from 1900 to its elimination in I960. Because of the difficulties encountered in obtaining information regarding the Maine Central, the author has relied upon records of the Maine Public Utilities Commission and other sources.

The Maine Central Railroad once operated an extensive network of passenger trains. Additional services also included airlines, buslines, ferries, and hotels. As the popularity of the automobile increased, the railroad was forced to curtail its passenger service and end all operations of ferries, buses, and hotels. The number of passengers steadily declined, and passenger …

The S. P. G. In New England, 1760-1784: A Social Aspect Of The American Revolution, Irving Henry King Dec 1961

The S. P. G. In New England, 1760-1784: A Social Aspect Of The American Revolution, Irving Henry King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The history of the religious organizations in New England during the American Revolution has been written largely in terms of the experience of the Congregational Church. That is natural, for the part played by the Congregational Church loomed larger there than that of any other denomination, and it was the Congregational organization which took some of the most important steps in initiating the colonial resistance which led to independence. But while the role of the Anglican Church in the crisis was not so significant as that of the Congregational it certainly was not trivial. It constitutes a story that deserves …

An Investigation Of The Origin Of Place Names Of Towns In Penobscot County, Maine, William F. Fox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study was made of the origin of place names of towns in Penobscot County, Maine. Each of the sixty-one town names is taken up in chronological order. A list of the previous designations of each town, beginning with the survey designation, is included and an attempt has been made to find the origin of these wherever possible as well as the name used today. In many cases the dates of the first settlements, names of early settlers, and brief outlines of the towns’ histories have been included, particularly if these had any bearing upon the origin of the names. …

The Executive Council Of Maine, William Adams Newdick Jun 1951

The Executive Council Of Maine, William Adams Newdick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the state government of Maine there is an Executive Council which has gained such powers that it has become an important unit of the system of checks and balances. Thus, it becomes of importance to examine the extent of these powers, and to determine the advantages and disadvantages of the Executive Council.

The first section of the thesis examines the various councils that preceded the formation of the State Constitution of 1820. The history of councils in other states, particularly that of Massachusetts, is discussed and evaluated. The debates of the Constitutional Convention of 1820 are covered in order …

The Origin And Development Of The Open Air School, Marion Frances Quinn Aug 1946

The Origin And Development Of The Open Air School, Marion Frances Quinn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Open Air Schools came into existence because people had found a need for them. Some children were for one reason or another not profiting by a regular school routine. There were several causes for this. One cause was that some children had come in contact with tuberculosis and scientific studies showed that the tuberculosis germs could be best treated by out-of-door rest and good nourishing food. Other children were malnourished so didn’t have the resistance to fight off colds and tiredness. Still others had had operations and were not strong enough to attend a regular school.

Open Air Schools are …

An Investigation Of The Mill Development Of Aroostook County, Maple Ismay Percival Jan 1939

An Investigation Of The Mill Development Of Aroostook County, Maple Ismay Percival

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study of mill development in Aroostook County attempts to survey a phase of Aroostook’s industrial history up to the time of the County’s definite emergence as a predominantly agricultural area. The treatise likewise has tried to show how the present status has been achieved out of a definitely varied background. The scope of treatment has been, of necessity, somewhat restricted because, by and large, source materials relating to the County’s history are scattered and fragmentary. In only a few localities have there been any attempts made toward a concrete analysis of the town’s activities, economic or otherwise. Where possible …

The Study Of Relief Map Construction And The Construction Of A Relief Map Of The Mt. Katahdin Area In Maine, Winston Churchill Robbins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The project of the construction of a relief map of the Mt. Katahdin area is a step toward the construction of a relief map of the State, by serving to create added interest in such a project and to solve some of the technical problems. The Mt. Katahdin area was chosen for this project because topographical data was available for building a relief map of Maine’s most prominent topographic feature and because of the familiarity of the writer with this section.

Woody Plant Materials Suitable For Landscape Planting In Maine, Roger Clapp Jun 1932

Woody Plant Materials Suitable For Landscape Planting In Maine, Roger Clapp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study has been to determine the full range of woody plant materials suitable for landscape planting in Maine. Essentially, the survival of a perennial plant out-of-doors in this State is determined by its hardiness. It is desirable not only to know that a particular plant exists or is hardy at a given place, but also to know over what area the plant may reasonably be expected to be thrifty. This immediately suggests dividing the State into climatic or plant zones. Such a zoning of the State is undertaken in this paper and the plant material is …

Cross Section Of Maine History At The Time Of The Separation From Massachusetts, Harold Howard Inman Jun 1931

Cross Section Of Maine History At The Time Of The Separation From Massachusetts, Harold Howard Inman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper is intended to present a picture of Maine as it was in 1820, at the time of the separation from Massachusetts. I have endeavored to give a cross-section of the state just at the time it was taking a place among the more mature council, known as the United States. Maine had been for a long time under the tutelage of Massachusetts, but now felt able to strike out on its own.

In 1820 Maine presents an interesting picture. It is a good period of which to make a sketch for the state was entering upon the new …

The Penobscot Boom And The West Branch Of The Penobscot River, Alfred Geer Hempstead Jan 1930

The Penobscot Boom And The West Branch Of The Penobscot River, Alfred Geer Hempstead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Penobscot River, the largest and most important drainage system in Maine, for many years made Bangor the lumber market of the world.

Lumbering in Maine was confined to the coast and navigable parts of rivers until the most desirable timber had been removed from these areas. Gradually the lumbermen had to go farther inland to find the large trees. This meant the logs must be driven down the rivers to market. The farther inland the timber was cut, the greater were the obstacles to be overcome. The building of dams, the removal of rocks and other such work must …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the present status of the fish fauna of Maine. Data assembled during the course of this study includes descriptions of native and introduced species, records concerning their present distribution, and the extent of the official introduction of non-indigenous species. From this material may be derived conclusions respecting the survival of the introduced species and the probable capacity of the native species to successfully compete with them. Through the use of descriptive material assembled during the investigation of species it has been possible to construct a key as an aid in identifying any …

Temperature Conditions At Orono, Maine, Ernest Claude Drew Jun 1912

Temperature Conditions At Orono, Maine, Ernest Claude Drew

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an outgrowth of a much larger piece of work which the Department of Physics, thru its instructors and major students, has undertaken to complete. The task referred to, is the compilation, arrangement, and summarizing of the various meteorological records taken at the University of Maine for the past forty-four years. These records were begun in the above department by Dr. M. C. Fernald in the year 1869 and were continued by him until 1893. The work was then transferred to the Experiment Station, where observations were made under the direction of Doctors W. H. Jordan and C. …

Apple Varieties In Maine, Frederick Charles Bradford Jun 1911

Apple Varieties In Maine, Frederick Charles Bradford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The following pages represent an effort to trace the causes of the changing procession of varieties of apples grown in Maine. To this end the history of fruit growing in Maine has been carefully studied, largely through the Agricultural Reports from 1850 to 1909 and the columns of the Maine Farmer from 1838 to 1875. The inquiry has been confined as rigidly as possible to this state, outside sources being referred to only for sake of comparison. Rather incidentally, soil influences, modifications due to climate, etc., have been considered.

Naturally, since the inquiry was limited to printed record, nothing new …
