Engineering The Development Of Neuromuscular Circuitry On-Chip, Inès Khiyara Dec 2022

Engineering The Development Of Neuromuscular Circuitry On-Chip, Inès Khiyara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Neuromuscular development happens in a complex interconnected network of biochemical pathways. This complicated embryonic development follows a strong, functional, and precise neuromuscular network that has interested both scientists and engineers who seek to better understand neuromuscular diseases. These disorders can be inherited or acquired, and their severity and mortality can vary. Researchers first studied the neuromuscular network from an organismal perspective, and more recently from an embryological, cellular, molecular, biochemical, and genetic perspective. From these studies, the fundamental principles of motor neuron pathfinding to muscles are widely understood, but the molecular drivers of specific nerve-muscle pairing remain unknown. Although in …

Regional Scale Generalizations Of Firn Thickness And Snow Accumulation In Southeast Alaska: An Applied Deep Learning Framework, Jonathan Maurer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High elevation mountain glaciers are referred to as the “water towers of the world” due to their ability to store water internally and release it later through melt and runoff. Much of the work to understand these complex environments has focused on cold based polar glaciers in high latitude regions, neglecting temperate glaciers and associated snowpack which are more responsive than polar systems to minor climatic changes. Advancements in the availability of open source data, deep learning theory, and computational efficiency has opened up new methods of “data hungry” modeling that may be well suited to the type of complex …

Redefining Safety: A Reproductive Justice Ethics Of Care Approach To Maternal Health, Elizabeth Balskus Dec 2022

Redefining Safety: A Reproductive Justice Ethics Of Care Approach To Maternal Health, Elizabeth Balskus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation will argue for the adoption of a multi-dimensional concept of safety in healthcare to include emotional, psychological and communal health. It will then illustrate how this concept of safety is foundational to a dignity-enhancing ethics of care approach that finds its normative grounding in Reproductive Justice and human capabilities, given that both patient and provider need to feel safe in order to fully engage in a dialogical-interpretive process of care and that caring efforts must strive to be equitable on both interpersonal and structural levels. This framework will then be applied to maternal health, showing how an approach …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study utilizes in-situ measurements and numerical weather prediction datasets collected during the Coupled Air-Sea Processes Electromagnetic Ducting Research East field campaign to assess how thermodynamic properties in the marine atmospheric surface layer influence evaporation duct shape and to develop a simple near-surface modified refractivity estimation method. This study utilizes a logarithmic linear parametric model, which describes evaporation ducts via three main parameters: evaporation duct height, evaporation duct curvature, and mixed layer slope. Notably, most studies utilizing this type of model assume the curvature, C0, to be a theoretical value derived assuming neutral atmospheric stability; a thermodynamic regime that is …

Arctic Sea Ice Loss In The Pacific Sector And Its Impacts On Sudden Stratospheric Warming Events, Jiarong Zhang Dec 2022

Arctic Sea Ice Loss In The Pacific Sector And Its Impacts On Sudden Stratospheric Warming Events, Jiarong Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Arctic sea ice is a critical indicator of climate change. The extent of sea ice coverage over the Arctic Ocean has dramatically declined over the past few decades. The impact has been extensively studied through observations suggesting a linkage between the anomalously warm Arctic surface associated with the Arctic sea ice loss and the mid-latitude surface cooling in the subsequent boreal winter. This linkage could involve the wintertime stratospheric circulation by enhancing the upward planetary wave activity and weakening the polar vortex. With recent advances in climate model, more relevant studies relied on numerical simulations and some suggested that …

Fine-Scale Site Selection Of Strand-Feeding Common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) And Their Prey, Deborah Kleinclaus Dec 2022

Fine-Scale Site Selection Of Strand-Feeding Common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) And Their Prey, Deborah Kleinclaus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Strand-feeding is a unique, cooperative foraging strategy used by some common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) at low tide in South Carolina and Georgia salt marshes, where a group of dolphins charges schools of fish, thrusting them onto the bank with their bow wave and then capturing prey items onshore. Strand-feeding dolphins are estuarine residents and frequent predictable stranding sites, suggesting an intimate knowledge of the area. Dolphin behavior prior to stranding suggests they do not herd the fish before charging, but instead prey on fish already shoaling near the bank. The use of active acoustics from strand-feeders in order to …

Question Modifiers In Vqa: Evaluating Model Sensitivity, William Johnstone Britton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Visual Question Answering (VQA) is a challenge problem that can advance AI by integrating several important sub-disciplines including natural language understanding and computer vision. Large VQA datasets that are publicly available for training and evaluation have driven the growth of VQA models that have obtained increasingly larger accuracy scores. However, it is also important to understand how much a model understands the details that are provided in a question. For example, studies in psychology have shown that syntactic complexity places a larger cognitive load on humans. Analogously, we want to understand if models have the perceptual capability to handle modifications …

The Relationship Of Dichotic Listening Abilities And Sound Sensitivity For Older Adults, Rachel Huber Dec 2022

The Relationship Of Dichotic Listening Abilities And Sound Sensitivity For Older Adults, Rachel Huber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT While amplification is the most prevalent treatment for mild to moderately severe hearing loss, many individuals with hearing loss report discomfort with amplified sounds. Despite attempts to resolve these issues with digital sound processing, adverse effects continue to be reported. It is possible these adverse effects are due to sound sensitivity rather than over amplification. Sound sensitivity has been found to relate to personality traits, emotionality, anxiety, depression, and self-reported hearing disability. One way to evaluate sound sensitivities is to explore how individuals accept sound. Sound acceptability is a holistic construct that attempts to evaluate a sound’s aversiveness, pleasantness, …

Dopaminergic Modulation Of Discounting Of Delayed Punishment, Grace L. Minnes Dec 2022

Dopaminergic Modulation Of Discounting Of Delayed Punishment, Grace L. Minnes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Effective decision-making involves careful consideration of all potential positive and negative outcomes. Importantly, negative outcomes often occur later in time, leading to underestimation, or “discounting,” of these consequences. The Delayed Punishment Decision-making Task (DPDT) was developed to study sensitivity to delayed vs immediate punishment during cost/benefit decision-making in rats. Rats choose between two levers, one resulting in a small, single-pellet reward with no foot shock punishment, and the other resulting in a larger, three-pellet reward followed by a mild foot shock punishment. This punishment is preceded by a systematically increasing delay as the blocks progress (0, 4, 8, 12, 16 …
