Homology And K-Theory Of Loop Spaces, Jesus-Manuel Mayorquin-Garcia Jan 1985

Homology And K-Theory Of Loop Spaces, Jesus-Manuel Mayorquin-Garcia

Digitized Theses

Part 1 of this work is an application of the Dyer-Lashof Algebra modulo p, an odd prime, to the determination of the Steenrod annihilated indecomposables in the /p homology of the infinite loop space associated to a CW-complex.;Part 2 is concerned with the determination of the algebra struc- ture of K(,*)((OMEGA)('2)S('2n+1); /2) where K(,*)((,-); /2) stands for mod 2, periodic, reduced, complex K-homology theory. Moreover the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence for K(,*)((OMEGA)('m)S('n)X; /2) is studied. The main tool in Part 2 are the mod 2 Dyer-Lashof operations acting on finite loop spaces, as well as the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence for K-homology.

Reflectivity: A Generalization Of Commutativity, Cancellation And Separativity In Semigroups, George Rubin Thomas Jan 1984

Reflectivity: A Generalization Of Commutativity, Cancellation And Separativity In Semigroups, George Rubin Thomas

Digitized Theses

The concept of reflectivity is interesting in that it is a simultaneous generalization of commutativity, cancellation and separativity. This thesis studies reflective semigroups as well as a related notion called reflexive subset of a semigroup.;In Chapter 2, a new notion called strongly viable semigroups is introduced. This notion is weaker than reflectivity. Some previously known results for reflective semigroups are shown to hold for strongly viable semigroups. The maximal separative homomorphic image of any given periodic strongly viable semigroup is described. Every homomorphism into a group of a reflective semigroup with a minimal one-sided ideal is shown to have a …

The Iterative Solution Of A Nonlinear Equation Using The Integral-Equation Formulations Of An Imbedding, Yves Beaudoin Jan 1984

The Iterative Solution Of A Nonlinear Equation Using The Integral-Equation Formulations Of An Imbedding, Yves Beaudoin

Digitized Theses

The thesis demonstrates how iterative algorithms for the numerical solution of a nonlinear equation can be deduced from the integral-equation representations of a homotopic imbedding.;As with continuation methods, we begin by imbedding the nonlinear equation in a continuous one-parameter family of problems by means of a homotopy. A root of the original equation is then the end point of the path of the homotopy's zeros which connects the root to an initial estimate. The path is formulated as the solution of a first-order initial value problem.;Instead of numerically solving the differential expression for the end point, as is the case …

Numerical Solution Of Three Instability Problems, Jacob Greydanus Jan 1983

Numerical Solution Of Three Instability Problems, Jacob Greydanus

Digitized Theses

This thesis obtains numerical solutions for three instability problems.;The first is a Rayleigh-Taylor interfacial instability problem. Numerical solutions are obtained using a co-ordinate transformation technique and two approaches are tested for use in solving the field equation: (a) transformation and extremization of the variational integral, and (b) transformation of the differential equation itself. The latter is also tested with the use of higher order finite difference formulae. Solutions are generated with the most suitable method and compared with the predictions of Nayfeh's non-linear perturbation theory. While there is good qualitative agreement it is found that the quantitative agreement degrades with …

Boundary Layer Flow In Streamwise Concave Corners, Steven Ray Wilkinson Jan 1983

Boundary Layer Flow In Streamwise Concave Corners, Steven Ray Wilkinson

Digitized Theses

Laminar boundary-layer theory has been correctly developed for streamwise corners using singular perturbation techniques. Theoretical predictions, however, do not compare well with experimental measurements due to the observed breakdown of flow stability and similarity. Both of these properties appear as basic assumptions of the boundary-layer theory, thereby providing needed simplification as well as imposing limitations upon the mathematical model.;Any theoretical investigation of similarity breakdown would require knowledge of the similar solution not only as an initial condition, but also for insight into how to proceed. Examination of the cross-flow behavior, which affects the onset of similarity breakdown, may suggest ways …

Generalized Hausdorff Matrices With Applications To Strong And Absolute Summability, John Edward Sayre Jan 1982

Generalized Hausdorff Matrices With Applications To Strong And Absolute Summability, John Edward Sayre

Digitized Theses

Hausdorff summability methods include such well known methods as those of Cesaro, Holder, and Euler. Consequently, the properties of Hausdorff matrices have been extensively investigated since 1921 when the German mathematician Flex von Hausdorff first published his paper entitled "Summationsmethoden und Momentfolgen I" {lcub}11{rcub}.;In 1922, Hausdorff published "Summationsmethoden und Momentfolgen II" {lcub}12{rcub} in which he defined what are now known as generalized Hausdorff matrices. The question then arose of finding appropriate conditions so that results about ordinary Hausdorff matrices would be true more generally. In this thesis, questions concerning strong and absolute summability are addressed.;In order to deal with the …
