Behavioral, Electrophysiological, And Neuroanatomical Plasticity In The Rat, As A Result Of Complex Environment Housing, Eric Lynn Hargreaves Jan 1993

Behavioral, Electrophysiological, And Neuroanatomical Plasticity In The Rat, As A Result Of Complex Environment Housing, Eric Lynn Hargreaves

Digitized Theses

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is an electrophysiological phenomenon of neuroplasticity, whereby synaptic transmission of specific brain pathways become enhanced, or potentiated, after the delivery of a series of brief, high-frequency electrical trains. The increase in synaptic efficacy is of substantial duration, and therefore LTP has been likened to the theoretical reverberatory circuit that lead to permanent memory traces, as originally hypothesized by Hebb (1949). To further examine the direct relations between LTP and learning this thesis focused on the paradigm of complex environments, which have been shown to enhance learning, neocortical thickness, and hippocampal evoked potentials. It was decided to examine …

Synthetic Applications Of The Photochemical Cycloaddition Reactions Of N-Acylindoles And Conformational Studies Of The Cycloadducts, Boke Zhang

Digitized Theses

The ability of a series of nitrogen-substituents to activate the cycloaddition photochemistry of indoles has been examined; the N-substituents were chosen in order to enable their removal following cycloaddition under mild neutral, acidic or basic conditions. N-substituted indoles, 17, 12 and 104c-g, were prepared in which the N-substituent is COPh, CO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}Et, CO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}CH{dollar}\sb2{dollar}CH{dollar}\sb2{dollar}SiMe{dollar}\sb3{dollar}, CO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}CH{dollar}\sb2{dollar}CH{dollar}\sb2{dollar}CN, CO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}Bu{dollar}\sp{lcub}\rm t{rcub}{dollar}, CO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}Ph, and CO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}CH{dollar}\sb2{dollar}Ph, respectively.;The silylethoxycarbonyl group of photoadducts derived from 104c can be removed by treatment of the adduct with fluoride ion in dichloromethane, the tert-butyloxycarbonyl group of adducts derived from 104e by treatment with trifluoroacetic acid at room temperature; the benzyloxycarbonyl group of adducts …

The Free Vibration Of Plates, Shallow Shells And Solids, Philippe Georges Young Jan 1993

The Free Vibration Of Plates, Shallow Shells And Solids, Philippe Georges Young

Digitized Theses

The Ritz approach is used in this thesis to study the free structural vibration problem of a wide class of plates, shallow shells and solids. The boundaries and/or internal supports of the systems considered are described by polynomials in Cartesian coordinates. The geometric boundary conditions at these boundaries or internal supports are enforced by including in a simple polynomial trial series the polynomial equation describing the position of the support raised to the appropriate power. For plates and shallow shells, in some instances, the displacement field is discretized into several domains or elements, as in the standard finite element method, …

Regulation Of Choline Acetyltransferase In Rat Hippocampal Synaptosomes, Bonnie Marie Schmidt Jan 1993

Regulation Of Choline Acetyltransferase In Rat Hippocampal Synaptosomes, Bonnie Marie Schmidt

Digitized Theses

Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT; EC 2.3.1.6) catalyses the biosynthesis of acetylcholine (ACh) from choline and acetylCoenzyme A in cholinergic neurons. Within nerve terminals, this enzyme exists in both cytosolic and membrane-bound forms, although the role of the latter fraction is not clear. ChAT is clearly subject to long-term regulation (over periods of hours to days), likely through alterations in protein synthesis, however very little is known about short-term regulation (seconds to minutes). Therefore, the goals of this study were to determine the mechanisms of short-term regulation of ChAT activity and to elucidate the physiological role of membrane-bound ChAT in ACh biosynthesis.;Using …

Surface Modifications Of Silicon Induced By Low Energy Reactive Ion Bombardment, Wayne Harold Chang Jan 1993

Surface Modifications Of Silicon Induced By Low Energy Reactive Ion Bombardment, Wayne Harold Chang

Digitized Theses

The effects of low energy reactive ion bombardment of semiconducting silicon material have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The residual surface damage induced by a conventional fluorocarbon plasma reactive ion etching of silicon consisted of a uniform fluorocarbon deposited film approximately 4nm in thickness which covered a silicon compound reaction layer. This reaction layer was comprised of silicon oxides, carbide and fluorosilyl species distributed in depth to approximately 2nm. The removal of the residuel surface damage was accomplished by an ozone oxidation plus a wet oxide chemical etching step processing and monitored by surface charge spectroscopy. This residual surface …

Dynamical Symmetry Breaking And Electroweak Processes, Nicholas Christopher Hill Jan 1993

Dynamical Symmetry Breaking And Electroweak Processes, Nicholas Christopher Hill

Digitized Theses

The on-mass-shell renormalization prescription of electroweak theory is extended to account for shifts in the mass-shell. These shifts arise from dynamical contributions generated by the nonperturbative content of the vacuum to the quark self-energies. Upper limits for the value of the dimension-3 fermion-antifermion condensate are found by considering its contribution to the u-d mass difference and the strangeness-changing nonleptonic decays of the kaon. Dynamical generation of fermion masses under chiral gauge interactions is also examined by considering the coupling of light fermions to a heavy fermion-antifermion condensate.

Cognitive Profiles Of Psychological Maladjustment, Henny Alice Westra Jan 1993

Cognitive Profiles Of Psychological Maladjustment, Henny Alice Westra

Digitized Theses

A review of the literature investigating various cognitive constructs across different maladjustment patterns indicated that, despite numerous cognitive similarities, the content domains to which cognitive processes apply may be one potentially important feature distinguishing various forms of psychological maladjustment. This proposal was empirically tested in a pilot study, in which irrational belief profiles were examined concurrently across four maladjustment patterns: depression, anxiety, the Type A behaviour pattern, and bulimia. Correlational data gathered from 63 introductory psychology students yielded data consistent with content specificity proposals.;Using a university undergraduate population, content specificity proposals were comprehensively investigated across four cognitive components: irrational beliefs, …

The Response Of An Hyperpure Germanium Detector To Ionizing Radiation, Shao Ying Tong Jan 1993

The Response Of An Hyperpure Germanium Detector To Ionizing Radiation, Shao Ying Tong

A basic understanding of the response of semiconductor detectors to ionizing radiation is important for their proper usage and their further development. Such devices may also be used to explore the energy deposition process in semiconductors.;The detailed response of an HPGe detector ({dollar}\sim{dollar}1 cm{dollar}\sp3{dollar} hyperpure Ge with an ion-implanted front contact) to ionizing radiation has been studied with regard to the radiation ionization energy ratio, {dollar}\varepsilon\sb{lcub}\rm ion{rcub}{dollar}/{dollar}\varepsilon\sb0{dollar}, using radioactive {dollar}\alpha{dollar} and {dollar}\gamma{dollar} sources and accelerated ion beams ({dollar}\sp1{dollar}H, {dollar}\sp{lcub}3,4{rcub}{dollar}He, {dollar}\sp7{dollar}Li). The data span the energy range of a few hundred keV to a few MeV. Effects of temperature and bias …

The Characterization And Chemical Reactivity Of Airborne Particulates, Marco Eugenio Giuliacci Jan 1993

The Characterization And Chemical Reactivity Of Airborne Particulates, Marco Eugenio Giuliacci

Digitized Theses

The characterization of airborne particulates requires the use of sensitive analytical techniques such as SIMS, AUGER, XPS, SEM/EDX, EMP, XRF, IOP-MS and XRD. These techniques supply information on trace element distributions of single or bulk particulates. In addition, we have found that the kinetics of the conversion of S(IV) to S(VI) in contact with particulate matter is useful to identify high levels of catalytic material, possibly of anthropogenic origins, present in the air mass. The reactivity of the airborne particulate matter can be combined with analytical methods to help in the identification of particulate sources. In addition, trace metal analysis …

A Characterization Of The Fast Pyrolysis Of Cellulose And Wood Biomass, Robert George Graham Jan 1993

A Characterization Of The Fast Pyrolysis Of Cellulose And Wood Biomass, Robert George Graham

Digitized Theses

The science of biomass fast pyrolysis is relatively young and incomplete. To date, there has been no systematic attempt to define fast pyrolysis in terms of chemistry, product distribution, kinetics, heat transfer requirements, and requisite process conditions. Neither has there been any experimental work which tracks the reaction progress as a function of both temperature and residence time. Furthermore, the literature provides a fragmented and often contradictory view of the nature of fast pyrolysis.;This thesis provides a coherent picture of the fast pyrolysis of cellulose and wood via an extensive literature review and systematic research. The literature review is an …

Radiotracers For The Angiotensin System, Vincenzo Quiquero Jan 1993

Radiotracers For The Angiotensin System, Vincenzo Quiquero

Digitized Theses

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), a dipeptidyl carboxypeptidase, is one of the enzyme components of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. ACE is responsible for the production of angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor, and for the inactivation of the potent vasodepressor peptide bradykinin. The enzyme is a vascular endothelial component of many tissues (i.e. lungs, kidney, preoptic region of brain) and has been shown to be localized on the lumenal surface of the vascular endothelium. Diseases involving granuloma (i.e. sarcoidosis, silicosis, asbestosis) are known to change the distribution of ACE and to cause hypertension. A radiolabelled pharmaceutical which binds with ACE could permit the …

Child Sexual Abuse And The Mother-Daughter Relationship: Moderating Effects, Patricia Anne Bourdeau Jan 1993

Child Sexual Abuse And The Mother-Daughter Relationship: Moderating Effects, Patricia Anne Bourdeau

Digitized Theses

The enormous variability of negative effects putatively resulting from childhood sexual abuse has prompted researchers to consider situational and environmental factors that may contribute to differential outcome. Because the clinical literature has traditionally focused on sexual abuse of female children, the relationship with nonoffending mothers is thought to play a crucial role in recovery. However, empirical evidence is sparse.;The present study investigated the moderating effects of mother-related variables in relation to features of child sexual abuse and subsequent maladjustment. Child adjustment was assessed by standardized measures, both parent- and child-report. Information about mothers' histories of childhood sexual abuse was obtained …

Regulation Of Gene Expression Of Surfactant-Associated Proteins In Developing Rabbit Lung, Jiejing Xu Jan 1993

Regulation Of Gene Expression Of Surfactant-Associated Proteins In Developing Rabbit Lung, Jiejing Xu

Digitized Theses

Pulmonary surfactant replacement therapy and antenatal glucocorticoid administration are the two treatment strategies used for Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Because of the important roles surfactant-associated proteins play in surfactant function, understanding the mechanisms involved in regulation of the genes encoding for the proteins in fetal development or upon glucocorticoid treatment is therefore of paramount importance in the overall design of an effective treatment regimen. We attempted in this project to investigate the developmental and glucocorticoid regulation of three surfactant proteins, SP-A, SP-B and SP-C, using the rabbit as a model. The mRNA levels for these three proteins were examined in developing …

The Lake Erie Program: Monitoring Fish Stock Changes Over Years, Jacques Lemaire Jan 1993

The Lake Erie Program: Monitoring Fish Stock Changes Over Years, Jacques Lemaire

Digitized Theses

The Lake Erie Fisheries Program of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources used a stratified sampling design with partial replacement of catch stations from 1987 to 1990 to monitor the fish community. Estimation methodology associated with partial replacement sampling design based on double sampling regression estimates was not suitable for the small sample sizes encountered and for multivariate descriptive study.;An unbiased estimation methodology for detecting changes and for descriptive study has been developed for two or more sampling occasions in either a simple or a stratified statistical population. The methodology for two occasions links well known cases in statistical inference …

Electrical Strengthening Of Clays By Dielectrophoresis, (Julie) Qiulin Shang Jan 1993

Electrical Strengthening Of Clays By Dielectrophoresis, (Julie) Qiulin Shang

Digitized Theses

Dielectrophoresis, the action of a strong, non-uniform electric field on particles, is potentially a new technique for soil improvement. The principles and technical implementation of dielectrophoretic strengthening of natural clays were investigated in this study. The research included two aspects: the theory of dielectrophoresis in clay-water-electrolyte systems and the experiments of dielectrophoretic treatment on natural clays.;The dielectrophoretic force imposed on a clay-water-electrolyte system is determined by the configuration of the non-uniform electric field and the effective polarizability. The direction of the dielectrophoretic force is governed by the effective polarizability that is in turn controlled by the permittivity and conductivity of …

Kinetics Of Growth And Ice Nucleation Activity Of Pseudomonas Syringae, Amarjeet Singh Bassi Jan 1993

Kinetics Of Growth And Ice Nucleation Activity Of Pseudomonas Syringae, Amarjeet Singh Bassi

Digitized Theses

Pseudomonas syringae causes freezing of supercooled water at temperatures close to 0{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C. In this study, the growth kinetics and ice nucleation activity (INA) of the bacterium P. syringae cit 7 were investigated under a variety of culture conditions as well as in batch and continuous bioreactors. The "drop freezing assay" technique used for measurement of INA was first investigated and the effect of several variables on this assay was examined. When P. syringae cit 7 was cultured aerobically in a medium consisting of sucrose, peptone, K{dollar}\sb2{dollar}HPO{dollar}\sb4{dollar}, KH{dollar}\sb2{dollar}PO{dollar}\sb4{dollar}, and MgSO{dollar}\sb4\cdot{dollar}7H{dollar}\sb2{dollar}O (pH 7.0) at 25{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C for 48 h, the highest INA was …

Cell Surface Phosphorylation And Myogenesis In L6 Rat Myoblasts, Xiaoyong Chen Jan 1993

Cell Surface Phosphorylation And Myogenesis In L6 Rat Myoblasts, Xiaoyong Chen

Digitized Theses

Cell surface components are important for myogenic differentiation. Studies with subconfluent day-2 cultures of rat myoblasts revealed that a cell surface 112 kDa protein was phosphorylated by a Ca{dollar}\sp{lcub}++{rcub}{dollar}, F{dollar}\sp-{dollar}, and Mg{dollar}\sp{lcub}++{rcub}{dollar}-dependent ectoprotein kinase (ecto-PK), and that adequate ATP was present on the cell surface for the efficient functioning of this ecto-PK. The following evidence suggests that both the 112 kDa protein and the ecto-PK may play important role(s) in the initiation of myogenesis. (i) The highest phosphorylation activity was observed in subconfluent culture, i.e. before the onset of myogenesis. (ii) Treatment of cells with myogenesis inhibitors also resulted in …

Segregation And Oxidation Studies Of Aluminum-Lithium And Aluminum-Magnesium Alloys, Frank Joseph Esposto

Digitized Theses

Auger electron spectroscopy, work function measurements, low energy electron diffraction, nuclear reaction analysis, dynamic/static secondary ion mass spectrometry, thermal desorption spectroscopy, and synchrotron radiation-photoemission spectroscopy have been used to investigate the segregation and oxidation of (111) oriented Al-6.5(at.%)Li and (110) oriented Al-1.45(at%)Mg single crystal binary alloys. The resulting Li and Mg equilibrium surface concentrations are found to be 0.16 and 0.47 respectively. For both alloys, the increase in surface concentration was associated with a decrease in {dollar}\Delta\phi{dollar}. {dollar}\surd 3\rm x\surd 3R30\sp\circ{dollar} and c(2x2) superlattices were observed at the equilibrium surface concentrations for the Al-Li and Al-Mg alloys respectively. This is …

Polysemy Effects: Evidence For Dual Access Routes To Word Meanings, Yasushi Hino Jan 1993

Polysemy Effects: Evidence For Dual Access Routes To Word Meanings, Yasushi Hino

Digitized Theses

The effects of polysemy (number of meanings) and word frequency were examined in lexical decision and naming tasks. Polysemy effects were observed in both tasks. In the lexical decision task, polysemy was additive with frequency. Polysemy effects appeared for both high and low frequency words. In the naming task, however, polysemy effects interacted with frequency, with polysemy effects being limited to low frequency words. When degraded stimuli were used in both tasks, the interaction appeared not only in naming but also in lexical decision. When pronounceable nonwords were replaced by pseudohomophones in lexical decision tasks, however, polysemy was once again …

Recrystallisation Of Strontium Titanate, Todd William Simpson Jan 1993

Recrystallisation Of Strontium Titanate, Todd William Simpson

Digitized Theses

The recrystallisation rate of amorphous strontium titanate is dramatically enhanced by thermal annealing in water vapour as compared with a dry ambient. Time resolved optical reflectivity (TRR) has been combined with Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) and ion channelling to investigate this effect. Thin amorphous films were produced on single crystal substrates of (100) strontium titanate by ion bombardment. Specimens were annealed under controlled ambient conditions and the solid phase epitaxial recrystallisation monitored in situ by TRR. The TRR data were calibrated ex situ by RBS measurements. Isotope substitution, nuclear reaction analysis and secondary ion mass spectrometry were utilised to reveal …

Fabrication Of Indium Phosphide Misfet, Raymund Wai-Man Kwok Jan 1993

Fabrication Of Indium Phosphide Misfet, Raymund Wai-Man Kwok

Digitized Theses

The presence of excessive energy states in the bandgap of III-V semiconductor surfaces is commonly found and has considerably hindered the development of III-V semiconductor technology. Although InP metal-insulator-semiconductor field effect transistors (MISFETs) are attractive switching and driving elements for the InP-based optoelectronic devices which have been widely used for communication applications, interface states of the dielectric/InP structure are known to cause surface Fermi level pinning and drain current drifting, a fact which causes the MISFETs to be unacceptable for any practical usage. In this study, we used a wide range of surface and interface analytical techniques to investigate a …

Reproductive Individualism And Divorce: An Examination Of Attitudes And Marriage Dissolution In Canada, David Roy Hall Jan 1993

Reproductive Individualism And Divorce: An Examination Of Attitudes And Marriage Dissolution In Canada, David Roy Hall

Digitized Theses

In documenting the dramatic increase in divorce in recent decades, several observers have uncovered strong empirical associations between religiosity and marriage dissolution. As well, many studies show a substantial relationship between premarital cohabitation and the risk of divorce.;What is it about religiosity and cohabitation that explains these statistical links to divorce? The main objective of this inquiry was to answer this question by placing marriage dissolution within a sociological framework. Building on concepts and ideas developed in the sociological theory of Anthony Giddens, it was argued that the recent proliferation of "expert systems" of knowledge and technology in the area …

Response Statistics Of Shell Structures With Geometrical And Material Nonlinearities, Meilan Liu Jan 1993

Response Statistics Of Shell Structures With Geometrical And Material Nonlinearities, Meilan Liu

Digitized Theses

The investigation in this thesis is concerned with response statistics of shell structures with geometrical and material nonlinearities under stationary and non-stationary Gaussian random excitations.;A series of hybrid strain based three node flat triangular shell elements is developed for linear and nonlinear shell structural analyses. In the former the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle is employed. The elements are obtained by combining a triangular bending element and a plane stress element, and incorporating the drilling degrees-of-freedom. For the nonlinear analysis the updated Lagrangian formulation and the incremental Hellinger-Reissner variational principle are applied, with incremental displacements and strains being the independently assumed fields. …

Unsteady Rotational Shear Flow Of Power Law Fluids, Jean-Paul Pascal Jan 1993

Unsteady Rotational Shear Flow Of Power Law Fluids, Jean-Paul Pascal

Digitized Theses

In this thesis we have investigated unsteady circular Couette flow for Non-Newtonian fluids of power law behaviour. We considered two specific problems: (1) A solid cylinder rotating in a power law fluid of infinite extent and (2) A power law fluid filling the gap between two concentric rotating cylinders.;Due to the nonlinearity of Non-Newtonian constitutive equations, velocity disturbances from a rotating cylinder propagate through the fluid with finite speed. The existence of this moving velocity disturbance front was observed in the analytic similarity solutions and numerical solutions. For the problem with one cylinder two numerical methods were used to determine …

Control Of Tonic Sympathetic Nerve Activity By The Brainstem In Rats, Kristen Hayes Jan 1993

Control Of Tonic Sympathetic Nerve Activity By The Brainstem In Rats, Kristen Hayes

Digitized Theses

Control of tonic firing of sympathetic nerves by the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) and the pontine reticular formation (PRF) was investigated. Electrical activity of renal, splenic, mesenteric and preganglionic greater splanchnic nerves and T{dollar}\sb{lcub}13{rcub}{dollar} white rami was recorded in artificially respired, urethane-anaesthetized rats. Glycine (1.0M;180nl) was microinjected into the RVLM to inhibit neuronal discharge and effects on these nerves were compared. To study descending inhibitory influences on these nerves, effects of RVLM blockade were compared to effects of cervical spinal cord transection. RVLM blockade caused greater decreases in discharge of renal ({dollar}-44\ \pm\ 3\%{dollar}) than splenic ({dollar}-31\ \pm\ 2\%{dollar}) nerves, …

Multiple Maltreatment, Attribution Of Blame, And Adjustment Among Adolescents, Robin A. Mcgee Jan 1993

Multiple Maltreatment, Attribution Of Blame, And Adjustment Among Adolescents, Robin A. Mcgee

Digitized Theses

The present study had two purposes. First, it examined the combined and unique contribution of five maltreatment types to variance in adolescent adjustment (i.e., physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect and exposure to family violence). In accordance with contemporary social learning theory (social cognitive theory), it was hypothesized that aggressive forms of maltreatment would predict externalizing problems, particularly for boys, whereas nonaggressive maltreatment would predict internalizing problems. Second, the study examined the predictive utility of blame attributions for maltreatment. Integrating the writings of several theorists regarding blame attribution, it was predicted that self-blame would mediate or moderate internalizing problems, …

Dynamics Of Morbidity And Mortality In Africa And Implications For Health Care Planning, Sulaiman Maladoh Bah Jan 1993

Dynamics Of Morbidity And Mortality In Africa And Implications For Health Care Planning, Sulaiman Maladoh Bah

Digitized Theses

The dissertation aims to tie together the empirical, theoretical and policy oriented aspects dealing with the dynamics of morbidity and mortality in Africa. On the theoretical aspect, scholars are arguing that the epidemiologic transition theory which provided the framework for understanding African mortality in the past, is actually part of a broader health transition theory which also includes a health care transition. In this theory, the overemphasis on biomedical interventions is down-played. To understand African mortality, it is argued, we have to consider the social and cultural determinants. Also we have to consider morbidity and its relationship to mortality. This …

Essays On Recursive Nonparametric Kernel Estimation Of Regression, Miang Hong Ngerng Jan 1993

Essays On Recursive Nonparametric Kernel Estimation Of Regression, Miang Hong Ngerng

Digitized Theses

In the practice of economics it is common that the data are observed not as a sample of fixed size, but rather as an ongoing sequence of a time series. It could be computationally advantageous if the estimate of the unknown function could be updated for each newly arriving data point. On some occasions, there is also a need to update the existing estimate with the newly realized observations. Kalman filter and Bayesian estimation are the commonly encountered techniques to handle these problems in the paradigm of linear parametric estimation. However, few procedures are available for nonlinear models, especially in …

Individual-Organizational Value Congruence: Operationalization And Consequents, Paul R. Mcdonald Jan 1993

Individual-Organizational Value Congruence: Operationalization And Consequents, Paul R. Mcdonald

Digitized Theses

Organizations can no longer rely on traditional means of competitive advantage (financial, strategic, and technological capabilities) to maintain a footing in the global marketplace. Recent literature has emphasized organizational capability (managing people in a manner that generates commitment) as a means to sustain competitive advantage.;The central thesis of this dissertation is that employees whose personal values are congruent with the cultural values of the organization will be more committed to the organization, experience higher satisfaction, have lower turnover intent, behave in a more prosocial manner, and be less absent, than those employees whose values are incongruent. While this proposition is …
