The Priorities And Accomplishments Of Kentucky Legislators : Is There A Gender Difference?, Amanda Allen
The Priorities And Accomplishments Of Kentucky Legislators : Is There A Gender Difference?, Amanda Allen
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
This thesis uses Kentucky as a case study of gender differences in the policy priorities and perceptions of accomplishments of state legislators. The research question is, “are there gender differences in the legislative priorities and perceptions of accomplishments of Kentucky legislators?” The legislative priorities of the legislators seemed to be similar, along with their own classification of women’s issues. The perceptions of success demonstrated that male legislators were not necessarily more likely to attribute success to themselves, whereas women would attribute success to collaboration efforts. The research was completed through confidential interviews with Kentucky legislators and analysis of the 2015 …
Characterization Of Plethodontid Timp-Like Protein (Ptp) And Its Role In Tissue Remodeling During Pheromone Gland Development., Andrew Knight
Characterization Of Plethodontid Timp-Like Protein (Ptp) And Its Role In Tissue Remodeling During Pheromone Gland Development., Andrew Knight
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Plethodon shermani is a species of lungless salamander that has a complex courtship ritual during which the female straddles the male’s tail. The male then uses a submandibular mental gland to secrete nonvolatile proteinaceous pheromones to increase females’ receptivity to mating. Investigation of the pheromone extract indicated the presence of a protein, termed Plethodontid TIMP-like protein (PTP), with no pheromonelike activity that bears sequence similarity to a group of proteins known as Tissue Inhibitors of Matrix Metalloproteinases (TIMPs). PTP was functionally characterized by measuring its ability to inhibit a range of mouse and human Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs). The results of …

An Investigation Into The Adiponectin Receptor Levels In Cardiac, Liver And Skeletal Muscle Of Mature Rats., Jacqueline Sippel
An Investigation Into The Adiponectin Receptor Levels In Cardiac, Liver And Skeletal Muscle Of Mature Rats., Jacqueline Sippel
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Both obesity and diabetes are domestic and international health problems. Adiponectin is a protein secreted from adipocytes and other tissues such as muscle which influences carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. For this reason, Adiponectin is a primary target for therapeutic treatment of metabolic diseases. Adiponectin interacts with receptors termed AdipoR1 and AdipoR2, which are structurally similar to G protein-coupled receptors except with a reverse membrane topology. The aim of this study is to determine the levels of AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 within cardiac, skeletal, and liver tissue samples of mature non-obese rats. The objective of determining potential differences in the tissue levels …

Obergefell V. Hodges And Support For Same-Sex Marriage : Changes In National And State Public Opinion., Adria Neal
Obergefell V. Hodges And Support For Same-Sex Marriage : Changes In National And State Public Opinion., Adria Neal
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Many have argued that Supreme Court decisions on culture war issues, issues that cause conflict between conservative and liberal values, stifle public progression on the very problems they are meant to resolve. They often cite political and electoral backlash following a decision as evidence of this stagnation in opinion. However, this backlash may not be representative of widespread public opinion. In order to understand the relationship between Court decisions and public opinion, changes in opinion on culture war issues following a Supreme Court ruling must be measured. This study utilizes national and state survey data in order to examine this …

The Effect Of Interspecies Signaling On Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia Growth., Zachary Ethan Dickinson
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that effects over 70,000 people worldwide, and is particularly prevalent in those of Caucasian descent. CF increases susceptibility to chronic infections of the lungs and GI tract, often leading to decreased quality of life and early death to afflicted individuals. No cure is available, and so treatment is limited to treating the frequent infections that afflict CF patients. Several species of bacteria are commonly implicated in these infections, including Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Infections of this species is of particular interest as it has been shown to be highly antibiotic resistant. This is a concern …
The State Of Tobacco : A Remote Sensing Approach To Understanding Tobacco Crop Production In Kentucky., Laura Krauser
The State Of Tobacco : A Remote Sensing Approach To Understanding Tobacco Crop Production In Kentucky., Laura Krauser
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Agricultural policy allows for governing bodies to better control the landscape, economy, and security of resources. Because of this power, it is essential for policy and its effects to be thoroughly understood. This study examines the Tobacco Transition Payment Program (TTPP, “tobacco buyout”), in effect from 2005 to 2014, using a mixed methods approach. The TTPP lifted the existing geographic restrictions of tobacco production and deregulated market prices formerly controlled by the government. Kentucky’s economic, social, and agricultural landscapes changed significantly in the wake of this legislation. To explore these changes, this study employs semi-structured interviews and remote sensing analyses …

The Western Diet's Negative Impact On The Health Of The Pacific Islands., Jessica Ruikka
The Western Diet's Negative Impact On The Health Of The Pacific Islands., Jessica Ruikka
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
In an already challenging environment, the Western diet has introduced noncommunicable diseases (NCD) such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease to the Pacific Islands (PIC). Without modern medicine, many of these regions, including Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia are ill equipped to handle the long-term effects of these noncommunicable diseases. A high percentage of the Pacific Island population is obese and overweight; and the Islands are struggling to combat the epidemic. Many programs and proposals have been implemented, such as changes in trade policy, local activism, and government modifications, but there has been no evidence of a decline in noncommunicable diseases. There …
Effects Of Talker Variability On Spectral Contrast Effects., Asim Mohiuddin
Effects Of Talker Variability On Spectral Contrast Effects., Asim Mohiuddin
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Spectral contrast effects are context-dependent effects that influence the way we perceive certain sounds. Evidence of these effects can be seen in experiments where a precursor sound (e.g. a sentence) is followed by a target vowel sound (like /ɪ/ as in "bit" or /ɛ/ as in "bet"). If the precursor's frequency was emphasized in areas more consistent with the frequency of /ɛ/, listeners tend to perceive the target sound to be the opposite i.e. /ɪ/. A recent study shows using sentence precursors from 200 different talkers diminishes these effects questioning previous claims that talker variability has no influence on spectral …
The Effect Of Medicaid Expansion On Emergency Department Utilization In Kentucky., Anmol Kanotra
The Effect Of Medicaid Expansion On Emergency Department Utilization In Kentucky., Anmol Kanotra
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
This paper analyzes the impact of a major healthcare reform in Kentucky on outpatient emergency department (ED) visits. I exploit the variation in treatment intensity across counties to determine the effect of expanded Medicaid coverage on Medicaid ED usage rate. I find that there was an insignificant 1 percent increase in ED usage following expansion when utilizing fixed effects. Counties with a high percentage of females experience significantly higher ED rates. Additionally, counties with a lower percentage of children under 21 have higher ED rates.

Lung Cancer-Related Emotional Growth : The Role Of Coping Styles And Prior Trauma., Moriah Horn
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
The objective of this study was to explore the relationship of prior traumatic history, coping styles, and post-traumatic emotional growth in participants diagnosed with lung cancer. Participants (n = 40) completed baseline questionnaire packets as part of their initial entry into the ongoing study “Understanding the Prognostic Significance of Circadian Disruption in Lung Cancer.” Linear hierarchal regressions adjusted age at diagnosis, stage, and household income. Analyses revealed no relationship between traumatic history and post-traumatic emotional growth. However, lung cancer patients who endorsed active coping styles were significantly more likely to report post-traumatic emotional growth. Secondary analyses revealed this relationship appeared …

Filifactor Alocis, A Newly Appreciated Oral Pathogen, Fails To Induce The Respiratory Burst Response Of Human Neutrophils., Jacob S. Edmisson
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Almost 50% of adult Americans suffer from periodontitis which is a bacterially induced inflammation of the tissue that surround and support the tooth. The accumulation of neutrophils, a critical cell component of the innate immune system, in the gingival crevice contributes to tissue damage. Filifactor alocis is a newly appreciated pathogen present in oral biofilms at periodontal disease sites. Studying the interactions between neutrophils and F. alocis will provide valuable information for delineating the role of this bacterium in periodontal disease and enhance our understanding of bacterial strategies to evade leukocytes’ antimicrobial mechanisms. The hypothesis that F. alocis modulates human …

Role Of Dietary Fatty Acids In Liver Injury Caused By Vinyl Chloride Metabolites In Mice., Heegook Yeo
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Background. Vinyl chloride (VC) is an environmental pollutant found in many industrial sites and it ranks 4th on the 2013 Hazardous Substances Priority List published by Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry’s (ATSDR). We have previously reported increased hepatocellular necrosis with high occupational VC exposure in human and in in vitro models; however, the effect of subtoxic VC exposure on liver with underlying conditions is unknown. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the hepatic injury caused by chloroethanol (CE; VC metabolite) and inflammatory response in two experimental models of high-fat diet (HFD) induced obesity. Methods. Mice …

Movement Patterns Of The Cave Salamander (Eurycea Lucifuga) In Sauerkraut Cave, Kentucky., Paige N. Wilson
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
The Cave Salamander, Eurycea lucifuga, is a common but poorly understood species of salamander that inhabits limestone features and karst systems across the eastern and midwest United States. As a species that can bridge the gap between subterranean and epigean environments, E. lucifuga may behave as a top predator and act as a significant facilitator in the flow of energy from the outside environment into the dark zone. The goal of this study was to document the seasonal movements of a local population of cave salamanders in Louisville, Kentucky, and the relationship between those movements and abiotic factors. Secondarily, …
Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In Natural Environments Within Kentucky., Steve Tran
Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In Natural Environments Within Kentucky., Steve Tran
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Rates of antibiotic resistance in bacteria are rapidly rising; this is, in part, due to overuse of antibiotics resulting in a great burden on the U.S. healthcare system. With the rise of resistant bacteria, a large-scale outbreak of antibiotic resistant bacterial infections may also occur. Research on developing antibiotics has also decreased. Thus healthcare is at a great disadvantage in the arms race against bacteria. The environmental reservoirs of antibiotic resistance are currently being explored in Kentucky, in which bacteria have been collected from a broad spectrum of natural environments to analyze their antibiotic resistant capabilities and their interactions with …

Evaluating The Role That A Putative Fxiii Binding Site Plays In The Reactivity Of Three Glutamines Within The Coagulation Substrate Fibrinogen Aα (233-425)., Chad A. Stephens
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Formation of a stable thrombus in vivo depends on the interaction between fibrinogen and the transglutaminase factor XIII (FXIII). Characteristics of blood plasma, such as concentration of Ca2+, are well known to regulate the activation and subsequent reactivity of FXIII. Despite this knowledge, the role fibrin(ogen) plays in modulating FXIII activation and reactivity is not entirely delineated. Currently, the coagulation substrate fibrinogen Aα is proposed to contain a binding site for the active factor XIII with fibrinogen Aα E396 serving a major role. A series of mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy studies was conducted to assess whether putative interactions between …

Syndecan-1 Tagged Liposomes As A Theranostic Nanoparticle For Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma., Wenyuan Yin
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
Theranostic nanoparticles are emerging as a novel mechanism for detecting and treating cancer. Due to the difficulties in detection and treatment of pancreatic cancer, these particles could serve within this unique niche. In this study, a Syndecan-1 ligand was utilized to increase tumor specificity of fluorescent dye encapsulated liposomes which were evaluated as a potential theranostic nanoparticle for pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Their diagnostic capabilities and specificity to pancreatic adenocarcinoma were determined in vitro using immunocytochemistry and in vivo using multi-spectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT). Immunocytochemistry showed that liposomes preferentially bound and released their contents into cells expressing high levels of Insulin-Like Growth …
