Emotional Resilience For Educators, Rosario Martinez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The purpose of this project is to implement a program that will provide emotional resilience support for educators in the Salinas Union High School District. This is a voluntary program designed to support staff through the work of Elena Aguilar. The purpose of this capstone project is for school staff to have that extra support and resources. The problem is classroom teachers do not have the necessary training to deal with students' problems. One contributing factor that relates to the problem is about students experiencing trauma and ACE (adverse childhood experiences) in their lives/community. As a result, they carry more …

Datashare Monterey County Website, Audra Ketchem

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The DatashareMontereyCounty website was created by combining Conduent technology and knowledgeable staff from the Monterey County Public Health Department. This project attempted to solve the disengagement between many people in Monterey County and health interventions/prevention initiatives set in place by the health department. Two contributing factors related to community disengagement were that residents were not always aware of works the health department was attempting to promote and the complexity of health data (statistics). The main focus of the project demonstrates how understanding health information may or may not impact decision making. When concepts are difficult to understand this can deter …

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) at the University Corporation of Monterey Bay mission statement aims to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. The educational issue for low-income students is the lack of accessibility to resources that assists with preparedness and success in post-secondary education. Teaching Early Literacy Skills To Low-Income Mothers, Cecilia Regalado Dec 2020

Teaching Early Literacy Skills To Low-Income Mothers, Cecilia Regalado

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many mothers categorized as low-income families don't know how to help their children to build language and early literacy skills. One of the main reasons why they are struggling a lot is because of the lack of knowledge and resources within their grasp group. Thus, the Women’s, Infant’s, and Children’s is a federal assistance program that will help many of them to provide early literacy techniques, food coupons, and healthy eating habits to pregnant women and children under 5 years old. For example, by teaching children how to talk or just making simple conversations at an early age will help …

The agency I interned at for the last year and half was Visiting Nurses Association & Hospice (VNA). The problem that I was looking into was social isolation in our aging adult population. Social isolation is a growing problem as the baby boomers are retiring and becoming senior citizens. Contributing factors to this problem are; loneliness, disabilities, and a decrease in sensory abilities. The consequences are; mental health decline, a decline in their physical ability , and mortality. My capstone project was implementing a birthday celebration with a local skilled nursing facility to gather as many occupants together to get …

Support Group Outcomes For Hispanic/Latinx Youth In San Benito County, Melina M. Perez Dec 2020

Support Group Outcomes For Hispanic/Latinx Youth In San Benito County, Melina M. Perez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Relatively few studies have examined the process of social/cultural detachment in Hispanic/Latinx youth in the United States. The present project adopted an ecological approach to this issue, focusing on mezzo- and macro-level support system development, apart from micro-level character and self-esteem development. Educational disparities, acculturation stress, and familial oppression lead to gaps between parents, adolescents, schools, and the community. Following the Youth Alliance’s philosophy that youth need support from multiple sources in order to heal, the Guiding and Understanding Individuals in Achieving Success (GUIAS) program’s support group sessions bridge these gaps. By offering culture- and gender-sensitive lessons, hands-on activities, and …

Salinas Union High School District Resource Video, Carmen Ambriz Dec 2020

Salinas Union High School District Resource Video, Carmen Ambriz

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The Wellness Center at Harden Middle School opened in the Fall of 2019 and is new for students, parents, and faculty. Due to misconceptions about the Wellness Center and the resources offered, students are either not utilizing the Wellness Center or not using it correctly. Results from pre-surveys indicated that a combined 74.7% answered they didn’t know or sort of knew what a Wellness Center was used for. The factors contributing to this problem are the stigma surrounding mental health, parents not likely to support their children receiving services, and students dealing with socio-emotional issues that are impacting class time. …

Promoting Higher Education, Sandra Estrada Dec 2020

Promoting Higher Education, Sandra Estrada

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Learning For Life Charter School is an alternative school that serves at-risk students. Due to challenges these students face, it is difficult for them to graduate and pursue higher education. Higher education can provide students with many opportunities. Financial issues, low motivation, and even lack of awareness of the multiple college opportunities available contribute to students failing to attempt or complete higher education. This leads to consequences including less opportunities in the future, lower lifetime earnings, and long-term health effects. In order to support and encourage the Learning For Life Charter School students to pursue higher education, educational workshops were …

Science In Early Childhood Education, Olivia Kocina Dec 2020

Science In Early Childhood Education, Olivia Kocina

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Science is often limited or absent in an early education classroom. It is important to give children an outlet to experience science in the classroom or through lesson plans. Having science at an early age can provide children the opportunities to build up their reasoning, to question things about the world, and later in life to feel more confident in other STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities or areas. To address this need, I created a 3-day program for 3 to 5 year-olds at Little Learners of Aptos School in Aptos, California.

Bullying Prevention Among Elementary School Children, Yazmin Mendez Dec 2020

Bullying Prevention Among Elementary School Children, Yazmin Mendez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Bullying is a problem in schools that often gets overlooked and remains undetected because children tend to not speak up on the subject. When bullying goes unreported, children can turn to inflicting self harm, harming others, withdrawing from activities and schoolwork. In order to address the lack of bullying prevention in elementary schools, I created a three-day workshop for third grade students at Sherwood Elementary School in Salinas, California.

Aging and Adult services in Monterey county joined with the Office of Emergency Services are joining forces to make sure that they understand and are ready to meet the needs of this specific population to provide the care needed in case of a natural disaster. The project concentrated in getting accurate community data in order to understand the volume of need for this population. The results showed not only information …

Basic Body Mechanics To Prevent Injuries During A Transfer, Veronica Gutierrez Dec 2020

Basic Body Mechanics To Prevent Injuries During A Transfer, Veronica Gutierrez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

There are many informal caregivers providing support to loved ones in their homes. Hiring a trained professional is often a financial barrier, leaving no choice but for a spouse or close relative to assume the role of primary caregiver. Many of them risk injury due to improper body mechanics when helping the patient transfer from one position to another. A four question survey was created to ask the public if they had any caretaker experience, felt comfortable performing a patient transfer, if they knew what a gait belt was, and finally if they were interested in learning a technique that …

Teaching Effective And Empathetic Communication Amongst Social Service Volunteers, Jillian Van Every

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Some volunteers working with homeless clientele may lack effective communication skills needed while working with this population. As a result, I have created a one-day training for volunteers at the Gathering For Women in Monterey, California.

Increasing College Students’ Awareness Of Imposter Syndrome, Gabriela Reyes Dec 2020

Increasing College Students’ Awareness Of Imposter Syndrome, Gabriela Reyes

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many college students are unaware of how imposter syndrome may be affecting them. Imposter syndrome consists of an individual's internalized feelings of phoniness and fear that someone will discover that they are not as competent as they were regarded to be. Imposter syndrome can have detrimental effects on an individuals education and career aspirations. To support students overcoming imposter syndrome, I created a workshop for TRIO students at California State University Monterey Bay in Seaside, California.

Increasing Nutrition And Healthy Eating Among Preschoolers, Hanyssa Usi Dec 2020

Increasing Nutrition And Healthy Eating Among Preschoolers, Hanyssa Usi

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

There is little nutritional education in preschools. Children are not being taught about the importance of eating nutritious foods. When children are taught about nutrition, they will create positive eating habits that could make them less susceptible to health complications. To address the lack of nutrition education, I created a three-day lesson about nutrition for preschoolers at Teddy Bear Learning Center in Monterey, California.

Casa Advocates Virtual Activities Capstone, Ana Guadalupe Borrayo-Garcia

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

CASA of Santa Cruz County's mission is to provide court-appointed volunteers and for every foster youth to receive the love and care that they deserve. The majority of the foster youth being served are Hispanic, but there are not enough bilingual volunteers, and this is a problem. One Contributing factors include a lack of awareness to become volunteers, cultural understanding of the role of a CASA volunteer, and that bilingual advocates need relevant outreach material to understand. Consequences include foster youth being on a waitlist, not enough advocates to serve the population in need, and a lack of support for …

Attendance Rates, Jamila Teal Dec 2020

Attendance Rates, Jamila Teal

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Absence is a normal part of childhood for kids going to school because sometimes life happens. Kids get sick, have family emergencies, the family might have to move, or lack consistent transportation to get to school. The Early Learning Program (ELP) is a non-profit organization that provides education for preschool aged children and focuses on making preschool easily accessible, primarily for low-income families. It is not uncommon for some families to take advantage of the ELP by not prioritizing taking their kids to school and getting them there on time. Now that the COVID-19 pandemic has altered the lives of …

Closing The Virtual Gap: Resources For At-Home Learning During Covid-19, Francis Nizza

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In this time of COVID-19, at-home learning has become the new normal. In some cases, parents have been thrust into the dual role of at-home worker and at-home teacher. Additionally, disparities arise when you look at education levels of parents and socioeconomic factors. The goal of this project was to identify resources that are available to families to help overcome the many challenges to at-home learning: areas like access to the internet, proper work environments and access to wellness and mental health support, to name just a few. The process was done through collaborating with Learning for Life Charter School …

Revamping The Guitar Curriculum: Adapting Piano Methods And Theory To Apply To The Guitar, Brian Cummings

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In this paper I will discuss the importance of a well rounded pedagogy for beginning guitar students. The existing piano pedagogy has courses outlining lessons and appropriate pieces correlated with lessons in technique, theory, ear training, sight reading, as well as other disciplines; the guitar has nothing like it to compare. I will also include a creative project including examples of piano lessons adapted for the guitar, including theory ideas using the fretboard, finding intervals on one string using half steps represented by the frets, and example pieces that offer a variety in genres, among other things. I will draw …

Music Therapy: Revitalizing Alzheimer's Disease Patients, Natalie Villalobos

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This paper explains the different benefits that music therapy has on patients with Alzheimer's disease. It will briefly explain what Alzheimer’s disease is: the causes, some of the symptoms, and the effects it may have. Also, the paper will explore the impact music has on the brain in regards to affecting a specific area, its connection to memory, and to emotions. Although Alzheimer’s does not have a cure, research has shown that music therapy does decrease the rate at which it grows. By looking at results from different research studies, a better understanding of what treatment or a specific session …

Feeding Families And Our Students During Covid-19, Elyse Bryan Dec 2020

Feeding Families And Our Students During Covid-19, Elyse Bryan

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This Capstone project is focused on providing families and students with meals during a pandemic. The majority of students in California are enrolled in a free or reduced breakfast and lunch program. Due to virtual learning it has become increasingly more difficult for students to be provided with school meals. Schools give opportunities to students to pick up their lunches but this is not beneficial for students with a lack of transportation or two working parents. Food security is important to allow students to focus in school and continue developing correctly both physically and mentally. Evidence shows that the number …

Non-Prescription Sale Of Syringes In Monterey County, Ruby Ramos Godoy Dec 2020

Non-Prescription Sale Of Syringes In Monterey County, Ruby Ramos Godoy

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

I have interned for the Monterey County Health Department in the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Prevention Program. My capstone project focuses on a community problem targeting high HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) transmission rates in Monterey County. There are high HIV and HCV rates among injection drug users (IDUs), and many of our community members may partake in these harmful activities. The cause of these high HIV and HCV rates is because there are limited amounts of pharmacies selling syringes without a prescription, which then causes the high HIV and HCV rates among injection drug users and low life expectancy …

Enhancing Emotional Regulation In First Graders, Clarissa Miller Dec 2020

Enhancing Emotional Regulation In First Graders, Clarissa Miller

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Emotional regulation is the ability to have control over one’s emotions; and typically develops in early childhood. Once children reach school age, they tend to be able to manage their emotions. When children are not able to regulate their emotions, they may have poorer social skills, and have challenges when learning in school. To help children further their emotional regulation skills, I have created a three-day lesson for a first grader class at Robert H. Down Elementary School in Pacific Grove, California.

The quarantine caused a decrease in the services within Basic Needs while there was an increase of need within the student body. The internet barrier affected the services the organization offered …

How Can Social Emotional Learning Be Improved During Distance Learning?, Morgan Horn Dec 2020

How Can Social Emotional Learning Be Improved During Distance Learning?, Morgan Horn

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Social emotional learning (SEL) is an important aspect of school that does not get enough attention. Many teachers are currently focused on academics instead of how their students are handling the stress of COVID-19 and distance learning. The focus issue addressed in this capstone project is SEL in the online classroom during COVID-19. An argument is made that distance learning causes a higher rate of mental health problems in students in all grade levels. Considerations of the issue should include the perspectives of teachers, parents, and students. The three action options that emerged from an analysis of the data included: …

An argument is made that the children of those Hispanic parents are falling behind due to the language barrier. Thus, this capstone project focuses on the communication between a school and its Hispanic parents and how to improve it, so that it positively affects the performance of students. Considerations of the issue should include the perspectives of school administration, parents, and students. The three action options that emerged from interviews with school administration and parents include: hiring a translator, …
