Retrieval Of Temperature And Pressure Profiles For The Stratospheric Aerosol And Gas Experiment Iii, Michael Charles Pitts Jan 1999

Retrieval Of Temperature And Pressure Profiles For The Stratospheric Aerosol And Gas Experiment Iii, Michael Charles Pitts

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The goals of this research are to develop an algorithm to operationally retrieve profiles of atmospheric temperature and pressure for the upcoming Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) III satellite missions, validate the approach through simulated retrievals, and derive an error budget for the retrieved products. The retrieval algorithm is based on SAGE III multi-spectral measurements of the oxygen A-band absorption feature centered near 762 nm. The retrieved products will consist of vertical profiles of temperature and pressure at 1-km intervals from 1 to 85 km.;The A-band absorptivity measurements are dependent on temperature and pressure in a complicated, non-linear fashion …

Dynamic Load Balancing Via Thread Migration, David Cronk Jan 1999

Dynamic Load Balancing Via Thread Migration, David Cronk

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Light-weight threads are becoming increasingly useful for parallel processing. This is particularly true for threads running in a distributed memory environment. Light-weight threads can be used to support latency hiding techniques, communication and computation overlap, and functional parallelism. Additionally, dynamic migration of light-weight threads supports both data locality and load balancing. Designing a thread migration mechanism presents some very unique and interesting challenges. One such challenge is maintaining communication between mobile threads. A potentially more difficult challenge involves maintaining the correctness of pointers within mobile threads. Since traditional pointers have no concept of address space, moving threads from processor to …

Eying Italians: Race, Romance, And Reality In American Perception, 1880--1910, Joseph Peter Cosco Jan 1999

Eying Italians: Race, Romance, And Reality In American Perception, 1880--1910, Joseph Peter Cosco

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation explores how American representations of Italians and Italian Americans engaged, reflected and helped shape the United States' developing concepts of immigration, ethnicity, race, and national identity from 1880 to 1910, when masses of Italian and other "new immigrants" rigorously tested the country's attitudes and powers of assimilation. In a larger sense, the research examines how the process of constructing the modern Italian/Italian American was part of the process of America constructing for itself a modern national identity for a new century.;The dissertation looks at a variety of "texts," including journalism, travel literature, autobiography, fiction, and photographs and illustrations …

Turbulence In Binary Fluid Flow Systems: A Lattice Boltzmann Approach, Darren M. Wah Jan 1999

Turbulence In Binary Fluid Flow Systems: A Lattice Boltzmann Approach, Darren M. Wah

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A method for simulating a turbulent binary fluid flow system based on the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is presented. The fluid equations up to the Navier-Stokes transport level are derived for this two fluid system, and results from numerical simulations using this method are shown. Finally, grid resolution is performed in a single fluid (LBM) simulation which determines the largest valid mesh size for a simulation that seeks to resolve physical structures of all scales.

Thermoelastic And Photoelastic Full-Field Stress Measurement, Deonna Faye Woolard Jan 1999

Thermoelastic And Photoelastic Full-Field Stress Measurement, Deonna Faye Woolard

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Photoelasticity is an optical technique that measures the difference of the principal stresses plus the principal stress direction. A complementary technique is thermoelasticity which measures the sum of the principal stresses. Combining these two full-field, non-contact nondestructive evaluation techniques allows the individual stress components to be measured. One of the main difficulties in merging these two measurement systems is in identifying an appropriate surface coating. Thermoelasticity demands a highly emissive surface, while photoelasticity requires a thick, stress-birefringent, transparent coating with a retro-reflective backing. Two coatings have been identified that can be used for combined thermoelastic and photoelastic stress measurements: PMMA …

Teacher Efficacy And Behavior: Their Relationship And Impact On Student Learning, Linda Diane Avery Jan 1999

Teacher Efficacy And Behavior: Their Relationship And Impact On Student Learning, Linda Diane Avery

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purposes of this study were to explore the relationships between teacher efficacy and changes in teacher behavior and student learning espoused by the standards-based reform movement and to examine the impact of a curriculum innovation on student learning and teacher efficacy The study was designed to target sophisticated pedagogical behavior associated with setting high learner expectations.;The context for the research was a federally funded project to develop and implement model lessons in elementary social studies in an urban setting. The sample was comprised of 25 experimental and 17 comparison teachers. Instrumentation included two measures of teacher efficacy, two measures …

Morphological, Electrophysiological And Behavioral Investigation Of Visual Acuity Of The Juvenile Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta), Soraya M. Bartol Jan 1999

Morphological, Electrophysiological And Behavioral Investigation Of Visual Acuity Of The Juvenile Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta), Soraya M. Bartol

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A majority of the research on sea turtle vision focuses on the turtle's ability to perceive shapes, colors and brightness cues on land. However, aerial vision is a minor component of the visual ability of sea turtles, potentially used only when surfacing to breathe, while basking, and during female reproductive activities. For my doctoral dissertation, I examined the aquatic visual acuity of juvenile loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) by investigating the morphology of the eye, the electrophysiology of response to stimuli, and the behavior to specific stimuli. For the morphological experiments, eyes were obtained from loggerheads, euthanized due to injury, …

Principals' Knowledge Of Legal Issues Related To Search And Seizure Issues In Virginia, Nicholas Everett Kalafatis Jan 1999

Principals' Knowledge Of Legal Issues Related To Search And Seizure Issues In Virginia, Nicholas Everett Kalafatis

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Today, public school administrators have the responsibility to provide a safe and secure educational environment for all who enter the school building. Amid continued drug use by students and a proliferation of weapons at school, principals at all levels face the unenviable task of maintaining an environment conducive to learning. In order to do so, principals often must balance the need to preserve individual student rights against the need to make schools safe.;The present study was conducted to determine if public school principals in Virginia meet minimum competency levels with respect to their knowledge of search and seizure law, and …
