It does so mainly via looking at the most popular right-wing magazines in either country at the time; The Spectator and National Review.

A Test For Heritable Variation In A Wild Population In Response To Endocrine Disrupting Events, Emily Van Den Blink Jun 2016

A Test For Heritable Variation In A Wild Population In Response To Endocrine Disrupting Events, Emily Van Den Blink

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a pervasive threat to the health of both human and wildlife populations. EDCs bind to hormone receptors and mimic or block their action, causing disrupted growth, metabolism and reproduction. Fertility affected by EDCs might be compensated if some individuals are genetically resistant. Genetic resistance in a variable population might cause hormonal feedback pathways to be more resilient to disruption. The effects of EDCs on fertility will be studied using a naturally variable population. A wild population of neonatal male mice, Peromyscus leucopus, was treated with testosterone propionate during a critical developmental period. Genetic variation was …

Blurring The Lines Between Collaboration And Resistance: Women In Nazi Germany And Vichy And Nazi-Occupied France, Katherine Michelle Thurlow Jun 2016

Blurring The Lines Between Collaboration And Resistance: Women In Nazi Germany And Vichy And Nazi-Occupied France, Katherine Michelle Thurlow

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In Nazi Germany and Vichy and Nazi-Occupied France during World War II, women were involved in numerous activities that fell upon a spectrum of resistance and collaboration. Although these two categories appear at first glance to be complete opposites, women were able to maneuver their society by going back and forth along the spectrum. Individuals were motivated by their families and loved ones, survival, and ideologies to participate in both resistance and collaboration. Women in particular were able to play upon societal expectations in order to navigate the spectrum. They took a role, often following societal ideas of women being …

Testing The Unconscious Effect Of Visual Context Illusions, Evan Douglas Jones Jun 2016

Testing The Unconscious Effect Of Visual Context Illusions, Evan Douglas Jones

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This study tested the effects of a visual context illusion when it was suppressed from the subjects conscious awareness. Using a mirror stereoscope and a particular form of binocular rivalry, subjects made estimations of size with and without awareness of the presence of the illusory elements. No differences were found, suggesting that effect of the illusion may require conscious awareness and perhaps is not a product of early visual processing. Keywords: Ebbinghaus, Consciousness, CFS, Illusion

Between Third Reich And American Way: Transatlantic Migration And The Politics Of Belonging, 1919-1939, Christian Wilbers Jun 2016

Between Third Reich And American Way: Transatlantic Migration And The Politics Of Belonging, 1919-1939, Christian Wilbers

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Historians consider the years between World War I and World War II to be a period of decline for German America. This dissertation complicates that argument by applying a transnational framework to the history of German immigration to the United States, particularly the period between 1919 and 1939. The author argues that contrary to previous accounts of that period, German migrants continued to be invested in the homeland through a variety of public and private relationships that changed the ways in which they thought about themselves as Germans and Americans. By looking at migration through a transnational lens, the author …

Resolution Limits Of Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry With Pulsed Source, Guangzhi Qu Apr 2016

Resolution Limits Of Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry With Pulsed Source, Guangzhi Qu

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization (MALDI) is a time-of-flight mass spectrometry commonly used to detect a wide mass range of biomarkers. However, MALDI requires a high laser pulse energy to create ions with a mass higher than 50,000 Daltons. That high laser energy increases the net ion production but it also degrades the instrument's mass resolution. This project uses a Room Temperature Ionization Liquid (RTIL) as a liquid matrix with a self healing surface instead of a standard crystal matrix to increase shot to shot reproducibility, enabling a systematic study of the origin of the resolution degradation. This study shows that …

Differences In Sockeye Salmon Antibody Composition: Testing The Immunological Imprinting Hypothesis, Maxwell Elliott Chappell Apr 2016

Differences In Sockeye Salmon Antibody Composition: Testing The Immunological Imprinting Hypothesis, Maxwell Elliott Chappell

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Anadromous fish such as sockeye salmon return to their natal streams to spawn, during which they undergo significant physiological changes including the release of cortisol, a known immunosuppressive hormone. Our lab has proposed the Immunological Imprinting Hypothesis, which suggests that juvenile anadromous fish respond to pathogens specific to their natal site by producing protective long lived plasma cells (LLPCs) that constitutively produce antibodies against those pathogens. These LLPCs are believed to be highly cortisol resistant. Thus, fish returning to their natal streams have immunological protection from pathogens found at that specific location. I investigated the Immunological Imprinting Hypothesis through analysis …

Apocalypse Now: War And Religion In Late Colonial And Early Republic America, Nicole Marie Penn Apr 2016

Apocalypse Now: War And Religion In Late Colonial And Early Republic America, Nicole Marie Penn

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

ABSTRACT French “Idolators,” British “Heretics,” Native “Heathens”: The Seven Years’ War in North America as a Religious Conflict With France and Great Britain as its primary belligerents, the Seven Years' War was an international conflict with a decidedly religious dimension, one based on the longstanding rivalry between Catholicism and Protestantism. In North America, the conflict galvanized clergymen in both the British and French colonies to frame the war as a religious struggle with potentially apocalyptic consequences. This discourse remains understudied by historians, and efforts to address religion's role in America during the Seven Years' War is usually one-sided, focusing either …

Beyond The Campus Tour: College Choice And The Campus Visit, Justine Rebecca Okerson

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

College choice, the decision-making process for students of whether and where to attend college, is complex. The college choice process also affects a range of stakeholders: high school students, parents, public policymakers, high schools, admission professionals, and institutions of higher education. Understanding the influences of college choice for prospective students allows colleges and universities to examine best practices in admission and enrollment management. Even though the campus visit has a significant affect on a student’s decision for application and enrollment, what remains unknown is how the construct of the campus visit is perceived among students and how students’ perceptions of …

Different Faces In Our Classrooms: Teachers' Cultural Perspectives Of Heterogeneous School Environments, Paige Hendricks Apr 2016

Different Faces In Our Classrooms: Teachers' Cultural Perspectives Of Heterogeneous School Environments, Paige Hendricks

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The foundation of the United States’ educational system is that all students will be educated equally by offering access to knowledge, opportunities, and services resulting in the creation of positive societal contributors. However, this task is complex and challenging. Heterogeneous student populations due to increased culturally diversity, do not match the stable teacher population. Therefore, a disconnection occurs between student and teacher populations and corresponding cultural views. Adopting cultural theories from anthropology, business, and education, this quasi-ethnographic study, within one elementary school, examined the relationship between the created culture and understandings of various sociocultural student identities by three first grade …

Community Of Practice: Evaluation Of A Collaboration Program In An Educational Setting, Denise Citarelli Jones Apr 2016

Community Of Practice: Evaluation Of A Collaboration Program In An Educational Setting, Denise Citarelli Jones

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Although collaborative programs are used in a variety of educational contexts, during the implementation of new curricula, collaboration among teachers is essential since the difference between curriculum-in-theory and curriculum-in-use lies specifically with teachers’ adherence to the implemented curriculum rather than the curriculum that was written. When multiple teachers implement a curricular initiative and interact with the materials in different, teacher-specific ways, curriculum fidelity across teachers is a true concern, rendering an evaluation of the curricular program unstable. For this reason, consistent, embedded collaboration during the first year of new curricula has the potential to provide a vehicle for implementation alignment. …

The study employed comparative case study methodology to examine the details of two school districts that had engaged in turning around low-achieving schools …

Comprehensive Internationalization: Examining The What, Why, And How At Community Colleges, Debra-Ann C. Butler Apr 2016

Comprehensive Internationalization: Examining The What, Why, And How At Community Colleges, Debra-Ann C. Butler

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Community colleges enroll nearly half of the total U.S. undergraduates, have the most diverse student population, and serve as the only contact with postsecondary education for many students. Community colleges have engaged in internationalization efforts for decades. Most rely on study abroad and international students as the only methods to internationalize their campuses. A focus on study abroad is not an effective method to internationalize the campus and provide all students with the global awareness and skills necessary to be successful in today’s society. The American Council on Education Model for Comprehensive Internationalization (2012a), Knight’s (1997) rationales framework, and Knight’s …

Seeing The Paradigm: Education Professionals' Advocacy For The Gifted Student With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Patricia Costis

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Meeting the needs of the gifted student with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) requires addressing both conditions. Education professionals are in a unique position to begin this process by referring the student to school specialists for evaluation. However, diagnostic confusion surrounding autism, misconceptions about special education, varying conceptions of giftedness, and overlapping behaviors of giftedness and ASD can inhibit education professionals’ ability to recognize unique behaviors of gifted students with ASD, and make appropriate referrals, placing the student at academic risk. Autism and giftedness have been studied separately in the fields of education and psychology for more than half a century. …

Experience, Time, And Opportunity: An Exploratory Case Study Regarding The Artistic Journeys Of Middle School Adolescents And Their Perceptions Of The Influence Of Environmental Factors On The Development Of Their Visual Art Talent In Rural Montana Communities, Gayle B. Roege

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Artistic talent is critical to offering creative contributions to society’s challenges and opportunities (in balance with technical, business, and other domains). Emphasis on art experiences and skills is missing in school programs, due to financial and accountability constraints, and encouraging prioritization on “core” subjects. Rural environments present particular challenges: while they are identified as fertile ground for developing a creative class, low population density makes it difficult to provide substantial support for in-depth exploratory, experiential creative endeavors. A crucial element of maintaining personal commitment to one’s talent area is support. While support from the family is essential, the value a …
