Children's Mental Health, Yvonne A. Asare-Bediako Jan 2014

Children's Mental Health, Yvonne A. Asare-Bediako

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The study of children’s mental health has largely been the domain of developmental psychologists and psychiatrists. These studies focus on parental mental health, and examine its direct and indirect effects, through a family’s psychosocial environment. Relatively little attention is given to socio-structural factors. By contrast, the sociology of mental health focuses on such structural factors as poverty and income, examining the extent to which stressors and strains may pattern the effects of these factors on children’s psychopathology. Adding to the divergence in research is the use of maternal reports in the assessment of children’s mental health. These reports often reflect …

Song As An Honest Indicator Of Developmental Stress In Song Sparrows, Kimberly L. Schmidt Dec 2013

Song As An Honest Indicator Of Developmental Stress In Song Sparrows, Kimberly L. Schmidt

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Developmental Stress Hypothesis proposes that the honesty of birdsong is maintained by costs incurred during development, such that song in adulthood reflects exposure to early-life stressors. The purpose of this thesis was to provide a rigorous test of the Developmental Stress Hypothesis in song sparrows (Melospiza melodia). My three objectives were to determine the long-term effects of early-life stress on: 1) physiological traits (Chapters 2, 3, and 4); 2) male song production (Chapter 5); and 3) the response of females to song (Chapter 6). Nestlings were hand-reared in captivity under one of three treatment conditions: control, food …

Interpretive Bias In The Context Of Life Stress And Depression: An Examination Of Stress Generation And Diathesis-Stress Models, Pamela M. Seeds Jun 2012

Interpretive Bias In The Context Of Life Stress And Depression: An Examination Of Stress Generation And Diathesis-Stress Models, Pamela M. Seeds

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Purpose: Researchers have recently demonstrated interest in interpretive bias, the tendency to interpret ambiguous information more negatively and/or less positively. The extent to which interpretive biases influence the occurrence of life stressors and potentially compound the negative effects of life stress in the development of depression is presently unknown. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate interpretive bias for ambiguous social information within the context of stress and depression. This study examined interpretive bias in the context of two theoretically and empirically supported models of depression – stress generation and diathesis-stress – to determine the mechanism through which …

Coping Experiences Of 911 Communication Workers, Sarah G. Horsford Apr 2012

Coping Experiences Of 911 Communication Workers, Sarah G. Horsford

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This research explored coping experiences among emergency communications personnel. Ten individuals from a communication centre of a policing unit in Ontario participated in semi-structured interviews. Seven themes emerged to form the content analysis including Meaning-Focused Coping, Emotion-Focused Coping, Problem-Focused Coping, Reappraisal, Comm Centre Culture, Occupational Dimensions and Organizational Structure. Themes were compared to workplace stress, coping and burnout literature in addition to literature regarding organizational interventions and emergency responders. Implications were presented for counselors working with communications personnel and emergency responders.

The Relationship Between Hpa Regulation And Fitness In A Free-Living Population Of Song Sparrows (Melospiza Melodia), Ainsley Anne Furlonger Jan 2011

The Relationship Between Hpa Regulation And Fitness In A Free-Living Population Of Song Sparrows (Melospiza Melodia), Ainsley Anne Furlonger

Digitized Theses

In a changing environment, individuals must have the ability to physiologically cope with unpredictable stressors. The endocrine response to stressors is one mechanism vertebrates can use. The corticosterone (CORT)-fitness hypothesis predicts a negative relationship between acute stress induced levels of CORT and fitness. I examined the effectiveness of hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulation through exogenous hormone stimulation and plasma CORT levels as a predictor for various fitness measures in free-living song sparrows (Melospiza melodia). CORT levels at 30 minutes and in response to dexamethasone injection were predictive of lay date in this population. However, no relationships were observed between HPA regulation …

Sources Of Workplace Stress And Levels Of Burnout In Counsellors, Sarah Marguerite Flynn Jan 2008

Sources Of Workplace Stress And Levels Of Burnout In Counsellors, Sarah Marguerite Flynn

Digitized Theses

Individuals employed in occupations that involve an intense emotional element, such as counselling, are particularly affected by stress and burnout. This study established levels of counsellor burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction in 76 counsellors using the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL). Using both quantitative and qualitative means, this study examined how such variables as the domain of counselling, professional experience, case load, and the amount of engagement in self-care affect counsellors’ burnout levels. The counsellors in this sample were significantly less burned out and showed significantly more compassion satisfaction than the ProQOL normed sample. Furthermore, burnout and compassion …
