Abstract

As a result of 2000 legislation changes regarding entry-to-practice for nurses, collaborative nursing education programs were formed in Ontario. These legislative changes required Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology (CAATs) to find university partners to enter into collaborative arrangements in order to continue delivering nursing education, due to their inability to confer university baccalaureate degrees independently. Subsequently, 21 CAATs in Ontario merged with 13 university nursing programs and entered into an education partnership in order for their graduates to meet an entry-to-practice requirement of a university baccalaureate degree. Companies rely on teams to combine their different skills and solve multidisciplinary problems (Engestrom, 2008; Schrage, 1995). One crucial characteristic of teams is their interdependent nature (Sundstrom, de Meuse, & Futrell, 1990). However, interdependence as a construct is not well understood and its role in dynamic team processes is not clear. Recent theoretical advances have proposed a new model of interdependence – one that places two forms of interdependence at the beginning of a path that leads through task and social constructs to team effectiveness (Courtright, Thurgood, Stewart, & Pierotti, 2015). Since the release of the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada in 2015, the post-secondary sector has focused their attention on the indigenization of programming and practices with mixed results. This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) presents a possible solution to embed Indigenous knowledge and culture in a program offered at a large urban college in Canada.

This organizational improvement plan (OIP) presents possible leadership approaches and solutions to the enhance team motivation through a period of rapid change. The OIP focuses on a team within an educational training institute, strategically aligned to a large educational organization. The training institute was previously known as the professional learning and development (PLD) department and was situated within the corporate office of the organization.
