The Economic Impact Of A Short Term Event On Tourism: 1994 National Slo-Pitch Tournament, John Macdonald Aug 1995

The Economic Impact Of A Short Term Event On Tourism: 1994 National Slo-Pitch Tournament, John Macdonald

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines whether short-term special events provide a positive net economic benefit to the host community with a specific focus on the 1994 Canadian National Slo-Pitch Championships held in Niagara Falls. A participant survey designed to identify demographic information and direct spending patterns was conducted, in addition to a survey of the hotels that accommodated the participants. The findings reveal that significant economic benefits can be gained by hosting short-term special events and the extent of the economic benefits is increased considerably when the event requires participants to stay in the host community overnight.

Intermunicipal Servicing Agreements: Four Case Studies In Huron County, Jennifer Hosack Aug 1995

Intermunicipal Servicing Agreements: Four Case Studies In Huron County, Jennifer Hosack

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines how local servicing problems – with a specific focus on sewage and water services – can be dealt with effectively based on four case studies of municipalities in Huron County. An analysis of municipal and provincial documents and interviews with key stakeholders were conducted. The findings reveal that local servicing problems can be successfully addressed with servicing agreements, which involve adjacent municipalities working cooperatively with one another in order to obtain the level of servicing that they each desire.

Evaluation Of Leadership In Ontario Public Libraries, Reed Osborne Aug 1995

Evaluation Of Leadership In Ontario Public Libraries, Reed Osborne

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines whether the leadership performance appraisal ratings of public library chief executive officers (CEOs) are influenced by the gender of the CEO. Surveys with 272 board members and management or professional staff at public libraries in Ontario were conducted to determine their evaluations of the CEO for 14 leadership qualities. The findings reveal that female CEOs carry an additional burden in the form of ongoing gender role tensions that male CEOs do not have to endure.

The Incidence And Impact Of Strategic Human Resource Management In Canadian Municipalities, Cheryl Smith Aug 1995

The Incidence And Impact Of Strategic Human Resource Management In Canadian Municipalities, Cheryl Smith

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines the incidence and effectiveness of strategic human resource management (SHRM) in Canada based on a survey of 68 municipalities in eight provinces with populations exceeding 38,500. The findings reveal that SHRM is being practiced in a small majority of Canadian municipalities and the majority of the respondent municipalities with SHRM have fully integrated their human resources function within the strategic planning process, which suggests that there is significant potential for the improvement of organizational effectiveness.

The Regulation Of A Type Iv Phosphodiesterase From L6 Myoblasts, A Thomas Kovala Jan 1995

The Regulation Of A Type Iv Phosphodiesterase From L6 Myoblasts, A Thomas Kovala

Digitized Theses

A potential role for cAMP in regulating the differentiation of myoblasts has lead to the examination of the components of the cAMP signalling system, in this case a cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE). A Type IV PDE isozyme was identified in L6 myoblasts using consensus sequence PCR primers, and its regulation by cAMP studied. Sequencing of RT-PCR products showed the presence of a Type IV PDE mRNA known as ratPDE 3.1. High levels of cAMP induced dramatic increases in the PDE mRNA levels as demonstrated by northern blot analysis. Run-off transcription experiments showed increased rates of transcription. L6 myoblasts which had …

Joint Venture Ownership Structure And Performance: Japanese Joint Ventures In Asia, Shigefumi Makino Jan 1995

Joint Venture Ownership Structure And Performance: Japanese Joint Ventures In Asia, Shigefumi Makino

Digitized Theses

This study examines the relationship between the ownership structure of international joint ventures (IJVs) and their performance. This under-researched relationship was examined using a JV ownership structure typology newly developed in this study. Four distinct JV ownership structures were identified based on both partner nationality and affiliation: Intrafirm JVs--those JVs formed between affiliated Japanese firms; Cross-national DJVs--those JVs formed between unaffiliated Japanese firms; Traditional IJVs-those JVs formed between Japanese and local firms; and Trinational IJVs--those JVs formed between Japanese and third-country based firms. Two primary hypotheses were tested: (1) a JV ownership structure is chosen primarily on the basis of …

La Voix Enfantine De L'Apres-60: Refus Du Double Normatif, Recherche Du Double Marginal, Marie-Diane Tuyet-Mai Clarke

Digitized Theses

Canada's Multinationals: A Study In Outward Foreign Direct Investment, Stephen Paul Meyer Jan 1995

Canada's Multinationals: A Study In Outward Foreign Direct Investment, Stephen Paul Meyer

Digitized Theses

Regarding the foreign direct investment (FDI) situation in Canada, most of the attention has historically been centred on incoming rather than outgoing controlling capital. Yet, the activities of Canada-based multinational enterprises (MNEs) have fostered an impressive outflow of direct investment abroad to foreign localities.;To appreciate the importance of Canada's MNEs, it is compulsory to understand the spatial and functional characteristics of Canadian parent companies and their foreign direct investments. To realize this goal, a sizeable sample of over 20,000 examples of Canadian FDI (at various points in time) has been retrieved and subsequently agglomerated into a data set. From there, …

A Test Of The Effects Of Leadership Style And Task Feedback On Self-Efficacy, Performance Quality And Attitudes, Christine M. Shea

Digitized Theses

The present study examined the effect of three leadership styles (i.e., charismatic, structuring and considerate) and three feedback conditions (i.e., internal inspection, external inspection and no feedback) on individual performance on a manufacturing task and on attitudes towards the task and the leader.;One hundred and forty eight graduate business students were randomly assigned to one of three leadership conditions and one of three feedback conditions. They then participated in an exercise which required them to build four electrical wiring harnesses and complete a series of questionnaires. The questionnaires measured their self-efficacy before each trial and their attitude towards the task …

"Two Kinds Of Geography": Complicity And Resistance In Canadian Pioneer Literature, Gillian Heather Siddall Jan 1995

"Two Kinds Of Geography": Complicity And Resistance In Canadian Pioneer Literature, Gillian Heather Siddall

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to consider the Canadian wilderness as an actual and a mythological site for discursive change. Part One analyses five pioneer journal/handbooks, and Part Two examines four contemporary texts which focus on the pioneer experience.;Chapters One to Three explore the extent to which the disruption of their political and social assumptions caused the female pioneers to explore alternative constructions of gender. These chapters illustrate that the women do indeed see the potential in the wilderness for redefining themselves, for shifting away from the restrictive nineteenth-century construction of women. This shift comes in part from their …

Structure/Function Analyses Of Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin, Wayne Peter Bocchinfuso Jan 1995

Structure/Function Analyses Of Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin, Wayne Peter Bocchinfuso

Digitized Theses

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a homodimeric glycoprotein that transports sex steroids in the blood and extravascular fluids, such as seminiferous tubule fluid, where it is often referred to as androgen-binding protein (ABP). A cDNA for the human SHBG precursor polypeptide was expressed in mammalian cell lines. Recombinant human SHBG bound steroids with the same affinity and specificity as natural SHBG, and was immunologically indistinguishable from its natural counterpart. Site-directed mutagenesis of the SHBG cDNA was used to introduce amino acid substitutions that selectively removed glycosylation sites from SHBG. Analysis of these glycosylation mutants demonstrated that carbohydrates are not involved …

Leaving Parental Homes In Canada: An Examination Of Gender, Family And Culture, Zhihong Zhao Jan 1995

Leaving Parental Homes In Canada: An Examination Of Gender, Family And Culture, Zhihong Zhao

Digitized Theses

This dissertation first explores a theoretical synthesis for the home-leaving of young adults in Canada. It proposes that home-leaving decisions are made at the family level, instead of at the individual level. While young adults may base their considerations concerning their living arrangements primarily on their own self-interest, parents are more likely to consider not only their own interests but also the best interests of their children. Young adults from social groups with different levels of familism will also have different patterns of home-leaving.;The analysis involves the life table and the proportional hazards models, as well as logistic regression, using …

Transcriptional Regulation Of The Urea Cycle Enzyme Genes In The Liver Of Rana Catesbeiana Tadpoles During Spontaneous And Thyroid Hormone-Induced Metamorphosis, Yuqing Eugene Chen Jan 1995

Transcriptional Regulation Of The Urea Cycle Enzyme Genes In The Liver Of Rana Catesbeiana Tadpoles During Spontaneous And Thyroid Hormone-Induced Metamorphosis, Yuqing Eugene Chen

Digitized Theses

The ornithine urea cycle enzymes, carbamyl phosphate synthetase (CPS-1), ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) and arginase, are liver-specific proteins. Their expression is coordinately activated during the metamorphosis of the Rana catesbeiana tadpole by thyroid hormone (TH), and their presence is critical for the shift of this amphibian from an aquatic, ammonotelic larva into a terrestrial, ureotelic adult. My studies were focused on analyzing the transcriptional regulation of the genes encoding these urea cycle enzymes and determining whether these genes were upregulated directly or indirectly by TH. With this thought in mind, I isolated and characterized the sequences in the promoter regions of …

Infants' Use Of Spatial Co-Location In A Cross-Modal Perception Task, Kimberley Diane Fenwick

Digitized Theses

The role of spatial co-location between sight and sound in infants' cross-modal learning was examined. In Experiments 1 and 2, 4- and 6-month-old infants were familiarized with toys and an accompanying soundtrack using a cross-modal learning paradigm. Across conditions, spatial congruity between sight and sound was varied so that the sound was: (1) co-located with one toy (40 cm from midline); (2) 20 cm to the far side of one toy toward midline; (3) 20 cm to the far side of one toy opposite midline; and (4) 60 cm to the far side of one toy opposite midline. In Experiment …

Design Of A Collimated Line Source For Transmission Ct Imaging Of The Head With A Spect System, Brad James Kemp Jan 1995

Design Of A Collimated Line Source For Transmission Ct Imaging Of The Head With A Spect System, Brad James Kemp

Digitized Theses

Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) has the potential to provide absolute quantitative information about the function of an organ. However, two factors which limit accurate quantification are the attenuation of the gamma rays emitted from the radiopharmaceutical concentration and the inability to define the anatomic region being quantified. Presented in this thesis is an attenuation correction that compensates SPECT brain images for attenuation and a transmission imaging system that (a) provides the distribution of attenuation coefficients required for the attenuation compensation and (b) simplifies regional identification by registering the functional SPECT images onto the anatomic transmission images. The attenuation …

Digitized Theses

The oxidative addition of E-X bonds (E = Si, Ge, Sn; X = halide) to {dollar}\lbrack\rm PtMe\sb2(diimine)\rbrack{dollar} yields a number of new Pt(IV) complexes containing Pt-E linkages. The complexes {dollar}\lbrack\rm PtXMe\sb2(Me\sb3Si)(diimine)\rbrack{dollar} (X = Br, I) are the first well-characterized examples of Pt(IV)-silyl species. The X-ray structure of {dollar}\lbrack\rm PtIMe\sb2(Me\sb3Si)(bipy)\rbrack{dollar} shows the longest single Pt-I bond reported, and demonstrates the very strong trans influence of the {dollar}\rm Me\sb3Si{dollar} ligand. The X-ray structure of {dollar}\lbrack\rm PtIMe\sb2(Me\sb3Sn)(bipy{dollar}-{dollar}\sp{lcub}t{rcub}\rm bu\sb2)\rbrack{lcub}\cdot{rcub}0.5Me\sb3SnI{lcub}\cdot{rcub}CH\sb2Cl\sb2{dollar} reveals a five coordinate {dollar}\rm Me\sb3SnI{dollar} unit with a novel {dollar}\rm I\cdot\cdot\cdot Sn{dollar}-I interaction.;Many of the Pt-Sn systems studied involve the rapid reversible oxidative addition …

High Resolution And Wideline Nmr Studies Of Membrane Associated Molecules Involved In Signal Transduction, Alan Cavell Rigy Jan 1995

High Resolution And Wideline Nmr Studies Of Membrane Associated Molecules Involved In Signal Transduction, Alan Cavell Rigy

Digitized Theses

The primary focus of our investigations were centered around understanding the biochemical basis of the early events involved in signal transduction. Our work has involved two novel systems: (1) sphingolipid metabolites and (2) a synthetic peptide representing the transmembrane region of the human epidermal growth factor receptor (hEGFR).;Sphingolipid metabolites have emerged as physical modulators of many signalling pathways, including cell growth regulation, and signal transduction. N,N-({dollar}\sp2{dollar}H{dollar}\sb6{dollar}) -dimethylsphingosine and ({dollar}\sp2{dollar}H{dollar}\sb4{dollar}) -lysogalactosyl ceramide were produced by partial synthesis and studied via wideline {dollar}\sp2{dollar}H NMR, as a function of pH. Spectra of ({dollar}\sp2{dollar}H{dollar}\sb6{dollar}) -dimethylsphingosine identified that the molecule's orientation and behaviour are largely …

Visualization And Analysis Of Multiple Sclerosis Lesions In Magnetic Resonance Images, J Ross Mitchell Jan 1995

Visualization And Analysis Of Multiple Sclerosis Lesions In Magnetic Resonance Images, J Ross Mitchell

Digitized Theses

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides very sensitive indication of the presence and extent of the lesions of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). As a result, quantifying changes in the number and extent of lesions in MR images has been used to indicate disease activity in clinical trials of new therapies. However, lesion quantification is long, arduous, and subject to variability between and within operators. These factors limit the application of quantitative techniques and increase the duration, and thus cost, of clinical trials which rely on their measurements to assess therapeutic effect.;A computerised system was developed for assisted 3-D quantification and analysis of …

Developmental Potential Of Rat Myoblast Lineages, Christopher Louis Pin Jan 1995

Developmental Potential Of Rat Myoblast Lineages, Christopher Louis Pin

Digitized Theses

Skeletal muscle consists of multinucleated fibres which are classified as slow (I) or fast (IIA, IIB, IIX) muscle fibre types which differ in their contractile properties and their expression of contractile protein isoforms. Individual muscles contain characteristic distributions of fibre types which can be identified based on their myosin heavy chain (MyHC) content. While classical studies have demonstrated that the fibre type composition of adult muscles can be altered by extrinsic factors (such as changes in the pattern of innervation), recent studies suggest that different fibre types may be formed from distinct myoblast lineages. The purpose of this study was …

Prenatal Risk Factors For Neurological Abnormalities In The Term And Near Term Neonate, Kathleen Owen O'Connor

Digitized Theses

An abnormal neurological examination in the neonatal hospital stay may indicate a transient or permanent neurological disturbance. Abnormal neurological symptoms therefore place an infant at increased risk for subsequent neurological problems.;This case-control study was designed to investigate prenatal and perinatal risk factors for an abnormal neurological examination in the term infant. Infants were born between 1 January, 1988 and 30 June, 1990. The sample consisted of 222 neonates with neurological abnormalities and 666 controls who were free of such problems. Data on the prenatal histories of their mothers, course of the pregnancy, intrapartum events and status of the infant after …

Computational Solution Of Inverse Problems With Simulated Annealing, Douglas John Moseley Jan 1995

Computational Solution Of Inverse Problems With Simulated Annealing, Douglas John Moseley

Digitized Theses

The examination of inverse problems represents a fascinating, diverse and difficult area of study. Almost any problem in mathematics, physics and engineering has an associated inverse problem. The method of quasi-solutions allows one to reformulate inverse problems as a function minimization involving the associated forward problem. The function to minimize is known as a penalty function or cost function and is defined as the least squares difference between some measured quantity and a quantity computed by the forward solver. This strategy avoids the need to construct the inverse operator. The forward problem is often well posed and can be solved …

Evaluation Of Doppler Ultrasound Velocity And Flow Measurements, Daniel William Rickey Jan 1995

Evaluation Of Doppler Ultrasound Velocity And Flow Measurements, Daniel William Rickey

Digitized Theses

Doppler ultrasound instruments have been used clinically for about 30 years and have proved to be highly reliable for the detection of arterial disease. In addition, a number of different Doppler instrument designs and techniques have been proposed to provide quantitative measurements such as volume blood flow, percent stenosis, and waveform indices. Before any measurement technique can be used, it must be validated.;We chose a two-pronged approach to the problem of evaluating Doppler ultrasound measurements of blood flow. We first developed a flow system that mimics the vasculature. The flow system comprises a computer-controlled pump, blood mimic, and a wall-less …

The Dynamic Behavior Of Guys And Guyed Masts In Turbulent Winds, Bruce F. Sparling Jan 1995

The Dynamic Behavior Of Guys And Guyed Masts In Turbulent Winds, Bruce F. Sparling

Digitized Theses

The dynamic response of guyed masts excited by wind turbulence is examined in this study using numerical methods. Specifically, the report addresses two main subject areas: the development of a simplified dynamic analysis method for guyed masts, and an investigation of the nonlinear dynamic response characteristics of guys and guyed masts.;A simplified patch load analysis method is proposed which reliably estimates the dynamic response of a wide variety of guyed masts. A series of static load patterns, or patch loads, are used to replicate the effects of wind gusts. Empirical scaling factors account for mast geometry and structural properties.;The proposed …

Sustainability And Canada's National Parks: Suitability For Policy, Planning And Management, Stephen William Boyd Jan 1995

Sustainability And Canada's National Parks: Suitability For Policy, Planning And Management, Stephen William Boyd

Digitized Theses

As a term, sustainability has often come to be adopted as the 'panacea' for many problems without any clear understanding that the solutions will vary given the nature of the problem, the scale involved and the goals and objectives set out. As a result, what has emerged in the literature has been many different 'pictures' of sustainability, all of which may be relevant in certain contexts. This research examined the potential of the concept within the context of Canadian national parks. Emphasis was directed toward understanding, through the perceptions of 'expert' groups knowledgeable about parks, the key elements needed to …

Intramolecular Aldol Condensation Reactions And Transacetalization Equilibria, Junan Guo Jan 1995

Intramolecular Aldol Condensation Reactions And Transacetalization Equilibria, Junan Guo

Digitized Theses

Part I. Intramolecular aldol condensation reactions. The detailed kinetics and equilibrium for the intramolecular aldol condensation reaction of 2,5-hexanedione, 2, 6-heptanedione, 1-phenyl-1, 5-hexanedione and 5-oxohexanal were studied and correlated in terms of Marcus theory. All the reactions, with the readily explained exception of the intramolecular aldol addition of 5-oxohexanal, gave us approximately constant intrinsic barriers: 14.49 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.82 kcal/mol for the intramolecular aldol addition step and 13.99 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.74 kcal/mol for the subsequent dehydration step, which are also in excellent agreement with the intrinsic barriers found for intermolecular aldol condensation reactions.{dollar}\sp{lcub}16{rcub}{dollar} This means that Marcus theory is applicable to intramolecular …

Intermolecular Forces And Statistical Mechanics Of Liquids, Maria Koulis Jan 1995

Intermolecular Forces And Statistical Mechanics Of Liquids, Maria Koulis

Digitized Theses

This research is involved with the construction of potential energy models for the interaction of closed shell atoms and/or molecules and with the study of the thermodynamic properties of pure liquids and liquid mixtures, through the use of statistical mechanical perturbation theory.;The previously developed Exchange-Coulomb potential energy model for the interaction of closed shell atoms is modified to correct its unphysical behaviour for small interspecies distances and so that it is applicable for interactions involving molecules. The new potential energy model is based on using the Heitler-London energy to represent the repulsive part, and a damped and overall corrected dispersion …

A New Statistic For The Contaminant Dilution Process In Turbulent Flows, Honglin Ye Jan 1995

A New Statistic For The Contaminant Dilution Process In Turbulent Flows, Honglin Ye

Digitized Theses

A new statistic, the expected fraction of release mass, is derived for the important practical problem of monitoring the dilution of concentrations that result when a quantity of contaminant is suddenly released in an environmental flow. This new statistic is the expected distribution of the conserved released mass amongst various levels of concentration. The advantage of this approach is that both theoretical prediction and experimental validation are made more tractable. The expected-mass-fraction is defined in terms of a spatial integral over the distributed one-point probability density function of concentration. This definition is shown to lead to a relatively simple differential …

The Perception Of Rhythm And Tempo Modulation In Music, Matthew Stratton Royal Jan 1995

The Perception Of Rhythm And Tempo Modulation In Music, Matthew Stratton Royal

Digitized Theses

Research is presented on the perception of rhythm, specifically, the detection of changing or "modulating" inter-onset intervals in simple musical stimuli. The types of changes of rhythmic patterns examined are "rhythm modulation" and "tempo modulation." These two terms are akin to the musician's concepts of agogics, rubato, accelerando and ritardando, all being common expressive devices in musical performance. Rhythm modulation occurs when an initially even or isochronous rhythm becomes increasingly more uneven. Tempo modulation occurs when the beat rate of a rhythm accelerates or decelerates.;Two approaches are adopted to elucidate how such modulating patterns might be perceived, a theoretical one …
