Effectiveness Of Studying When Coupled With Exercise-Induced Arousal, Hannah A. Zabriskie, Edward M. Heath Jul 2019

Effectiveness Of Studying When Coupled With Exercise-Induced Arousal, Hannah A. Zabriskie, Edward M. Heath

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(5): 979-988, 2019. The basis of learning is knowledge of discrete information such as terms and definitions that can be developed through memorization. A strong knowledge base is something students strive to develop through self-directed study. Little research has investigated the role of simultaneous exercise and memorization on recall ability with a delay in recall of at least 24 hrs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of an exercise bout on memory by requiring participants to recall words 24 hrs after exposure to three different interventions: memorization while cycling, memorization after …

Sensitive And Reliable Measures Of Driver Performance In Simulated Motor-Racing, Christopher Irwin, Jamie Mollica, Ben Desbrow

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(6): 971-978, 2019. Motor racing is a physically and mentally demanding sport, associated with a high degree of risk for drivers. Hence, driving simulation provides a safe alternative to explore the impact acute physiological perturbations (e.g. heat stress or dehydration) on a driver’s performance. This study aimed to determine sensitive and reliable simulated driving performance parameters that could be employed in future driving performance studies. Thirty-six healthy males (age: 26.5 ± 8.1 y, body mass: 75.6 ± 12.2 kg, mean ± SD) completed a single experimental trial involving four simulated motor-racing drives (2 initial drives …

No Impact Of Heat Stress And Dehydration On Short Duration Simulated Motor-Racing Performance, Jamie Mollica, Ben Desbrow, Christopher Irwin

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(6): 960-970, 2019. Motor-racing drivers are often exposed to hot environments and may be susceptible to fluid loss and hydration issues, which could influence driving performance. This study assessed the effect of dehydration and heat stress on performance during a short, simulated motor-racing task. Nine healthy males (age: 26.6 ± 7.5 y, body mass: 78.8 ± 12.5 kg, mean ± SD) completed two passive dehydration (sauna) procedures (targeting -1% and -3% body mass loss (BML)) on separate occasions. Driving performance was assessed pre-dehydration (Baseline), immediately post-dehydration (Hot) and following a cooling period (Cool). Measures of …

This purpose of the research study is two-fold. The first aim is to establish strategies that can guide community colleges interested in the implementation of a mandated First Year Experience course as well as to identify barriers community colleges may encounter to help them move from desiring a mandated student success course to acting to create one. It is widely believed that student success course helps students learn to be successful, but it is not a widely accepted practice to mandate it for all students.

The second objective is to add to the limited body of research. A nonexperimental descriptive …

The Use Of Vouchers To Negatively Reinforce Number Of Weeks Compliant Among Clients In A Mental Health Court, Michele Nicole Murdock

Dissertations

The literature is sparse on the use of contingency management procedures in a mental health court (MHC). The purpose of this study was to examine the use of negative reinforcement for behavioral changes in a MHC. Specifically, the present study explored whether a voucher-based contingency management intervention improved the number of weeks compliant on MHC probation and whether participants were more externally than internally motivated to comply with MHC probation requirements. Vouchers were given for compliance with MHC probation requirements. The vouchers allowed participants to miss a future court date. It was hypothesized that participants who received the voucher would …

The Effect Of Providing Partial Presentation Notes On Student Success Factors, Sarah Elizabeth Mannon Cravero Jul 2019

The Effect Of Providing Partial Presentation Notes On Student Success Factors, Sarah Elizabeth Mannon Cravero

Dissertations

Psychologists and educators have examined the use of a wide variety of technological advancements in the classroom, and have studied the effects of these new tools on many factors that affect classroom performance. However, little research exists to demonstrate how specific teaching techniques, specifically the provision of partial or skeletal presentation notes (such as might accompany a Power Point presentation), affect factors that we already know to affect academic success, such as locus of control and academic self-efficacy. This study sought to discover the impact that providing partial presentation notes for use during lecture would have on students’ performance, as …
