Writing The Young Adult Novel: Analysis And Process, Lucinda Boone
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The thesis consists of two sections: research and creative. The research section includes brief analyses of five young adult novels that received the Newbery Medal, awarded annually by the American Library Association to the author of the most distinguished contribution to children's literature. The creative section is an original young adult novel that incorporates some of the characteristics uncovered in the analysis of the Newbery novels. The Newbery Medal winners analyzed for this thesis are The High King by Lloyd Alexander; Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary; Missing Maxj by Cynthia Rylant; A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle; and …
A Study Of The Thermal Properties Of Peti-5/Im7, Yan Tang
A Study Of The Thermal Properties Of Peti-5/Im7, Yan Tang
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
PETI-5 (Phenylethynyl-terminated polyimide) is a substance that shows a great deal of potential in the high-speed aircraft and the aerospace industry. PETI-5 has been used for the High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT), a supersonic passenger aircraft in development at NASA. In this project, four staging samples, one fresh sample, one fully cured sample and one partially cured sample were analyzed and compared using thermal analytical techniques. The sample staged at 450°F with full vacuum showed the highest thermal properties among four staging samples. The results indicated that vacuum is helpful in improving the thermal stability of PETI-5. The mechanism of …
Screening For Mutants In The Output Pathway Of The Circadian Clock In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Wei Yuan
Screening For Mutants In The Output Pathway Of The Circadian Clock In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Wei Yuan
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The circadian clock is a basic component of biological systems and has been found in many organisms. It is composed by three major components: the input pathway, the oscillator and the output pathway. The purpose of this research is to study the output pathway of the circadian clock in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strain Carnil by screening mutants, which were generated by insertional mutagenesis via glass bead transformation. The plasmid pSP124S containing the ble marker was used to introduce mutations. The CABII-1 gene has been reported to show a circadian rhythm in expression. The reporter gene ARS2 that was transcriptionally fused to …
Perceiving Organizational Conflict: The Effect Of Occupational Rank And Sex On Perceptions Of Conflict In The Workplace, Eric Hatcher
Perceiving Organizational Conflict: The Effect Of Occupational Rank And Sex On Perceptions Of Conflict In The Workplace, Eric Hatcher
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this study, perceptions of conflict were examined with respect to sex and occupational rank. The model for this study was Tjosvold's cooperation theory. Yet, unlike much of Tjosvold's work, I examined cooperation as a dependent rather than an independent variable. A reward-level pre-test was used to account for the predisposition to cooperate, and a mixed motive scale (post-test) was used to measure any differences in cooperation between occupational ranks and the sexes. Two hypotheses in this study were tested. First, in a between-rank conflict, supervisors were expected to view the conflict as competitive, while subordinates were expected to view …
Social Identity And Substance Abuse In The Lesbian Community, Molly Kerby
Social Identity And Substance Abuse In The Lesbian Community, Molly Kerby
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of substance use (alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs) among members of the lesbian community. Additionally, the investigator attempted to determine if there was a relationship between negative social identity and low selfesteem that is reflected in higher rates of substance abuse. The data collection method employed in this study was a type of nonprobability sampling procedure referred to as a purposive sample. The questionnaire was derived from instruments used by other researchers and validated by an expert panel. In order to select respondents from the lesbian population to be included …
Increased Severity Of Murine Infection With Toxioplasma Gondii Following Vitaman E And Selenium Supplementatoin, Susan Mccarthy
Increased Severity Of Murine Infection With Toxioplasma Gondii Following Vitaman E And Selenium Supplementatoin, Susan Mccarthy
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
At present, toxoplasmosis is one of the most common opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. The need for a reliable experimental model is crucial not only for achieving a better understanding of the pathophysiology of this infection but also for developing a better method to evaluate new therapeutic regimens. This study was organized to determine if the antioxidants vitamin E and selenium would provide a beneficial effect in mice chronically infected with Toxoplasma gondii. In the first phase of the study, 35 female Swiss Webster mice were infected with oocysts of the Me49 strain of Toxoplasma gondii while receiving diets supplemented …

A Construction Of Orthogonal Compactly-Supported Multiwavelets On $\R^{2}$, Bruce Kessler
Mathematics Faculty Publications
This paper will provide the general construction of the continuous, orthogonal, compactly-supported multiwavelets associated with a class of continuous, orthogonal, compactly-supported scaling functions that contain piecewise linears on a uniform triangulation of $\R^2$. This class of scaling functions is a generalization of a set of scaling functions first constructed by Donovan, Geronimo, and Hardin. A specific set of scaling functions and associated multiwavelets with symmetry properties will be constructed.
