The Role Of Zip Superfamily Of Metal Transporters In Chronic Diseases, Purification & Characterization Of A Bacterial Zip Transporter: Zupt., Iryna King Jan 2011

The Role Of Zip Superfamily Of Metal Transporters In Chronic Diseases, Purification & Characterization Of A Bacterial Zip Transporter: Zupt., Iryna King

Wayne State University Theses

In mammals zinc is the second most abundant essential trace metal. Since Zn2 is a small, hydrophilic, and a highly charged ion, it cannot be transported across the plasma or intracellular organelle membrane by passive diffusion. Different types of cells require a different constant concentration of zinc at all times. Presence of excess free Zn ions can be toxic to the cell. All cells must have tightly regulated homeostatic mechanisms in order to preserve healthy levels and proper compartmentalization of zinc. This is accomplished through the actions of specialized proteins that facilitate zinc uptake, efflux and compartmentalization. If the …

Temperament And Sex As Moderators Of The Relationship Between Maternal Smoke Exposure During Pregnancy And Child Externalizing Behaviors, Amy Beth Kohl Jan 2011

Temperament And Sex As Moderators Of The Relationship Between Maternal Smoke Exposure During Pregnancy And Child Externalizing Behaviors, Amy Beth Kohl

Wayne State University Theses

Cigarette smoking during pregnancy has been associated with negative child behavioral outcomes. Though many studies have found links between maternal smoking during pregnancy and behavior problems in children, few if any have looked into potential moderating factors of that relationship and few have examined the effects of second-hand smoking. This study examined child temperament at 6 months and sex as potential moderators of the relationship between maternal smoke exposure and both internalizing and externalizing behaviors at 24 month, 36 months and first grade. Both maternal smoking and maternal exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) were examined. Data for this study …

Social Workers' Knowledge And Attitudes About Treating Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Angelah Dawn Gomez Jan 2011

Social Workers' Knowledge And Attitudes About Treating Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Angelah Dawn Gomez

Wayne State University Theses

The current research seeks to understand how social work students and social work professionals increase their knowledge about AD/HD and how they formulate their attitudes about the disorder. The literature provided illustrates the many components of AD/HD risks, etiology, treatments, and professional opinions about the disorder. AD/HD is one of the most studied childhood mental health disorders in the nation. However, there is little research providing insight to social workers' knowledge and attitudes about the disorder. This is especially alarming because social workers are one of the largest professional populations to provide mental health services to children and their families. …

Fathers' Perceptions Regarding Parenting And Discipline Based On Community Norms And Practices, Anna Marie Yelick Jan 2011

Fathers' Perceptions Regarding Parenting And Discipline Based On Community Norms And Practices, Anna Marie Yelick

Wayne State University Theses

Determining fathers' perceptions of community norms on discipline is paramount to understanding how to develop social work interventions that target fathers' parenting behaviors. Understanding why a father engages in one form of discipline over another in child rearing and understanding how fathers view their parenting role is important when discussing implementation of parenting programs. This study was conducted using qualitative focus groups comprised of men ranging from late adolescents to mid-adulthood. The majority of the men were lower economic status, African American fathers recruited from a human services agency in Detroit. One-hour long, semi-structured focus group discussions were content coded, …

ANALYSIS OF GABA AND GLUTAMATE IN MICE BRAIN

by

STELLA WISIDAGAMA

May 2011

Advisor: Dr. Tiffany Mathews

Major: Chemistry (Analytical)

Degree: Master of Science

GABA and glutamate are the predominant inhibitory and excitatory amino acid neurotransmitters in the central nervous system (CNS), respectively. However, their altered levels cause several neurological diseases including Parkinson's and Huntington's disease, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. It is important to measure their levels in the extra- and intracellular environments to better understand and develop improved therapeutics that will treat these neurological disorders. The principle aim of this study is to study the impacts of different endogenous …

Speaking The Part - Is Black English In The Workplace A Detriment To Climbing The Corporate Ladder? A Sociolinguistic Study Regarding Black English In The Workplace, Kanika Nicole Jackson Jan 2011

Speaking The Part - Is Black English In The Workplace A Detriment To Climbing The Corporate Ladder? A Sociolinguistic Study Regarding Black English In The Workplace, Kanika Nicole Jackson

Wayne State University Theses

This study aims to explore how African Americans who speak Black English (BE), particularly members of Generation X, function communicatively in corporate America, where the dominant language spoken is Standard American English (SAE). Much of the literature theorized African Americans as being resistant to speaking SAE in mainstream settings in fear of compromising their identities or "acting white." Using in-depth interviews with six African Americans across the country who work in corporate America, this study examines their lived communicative experiences in the workplace and how they learned language balance (the ability to codeswitch).

With data compiled into case studies and …

Control Of A Single Ground Vehicle Using Aerial And Onboard Camera Views, Vishal Lowalekar Jan 2011

Control Of A Single Ground Vehicle Using Aerial And Onboard Camera Views, Vishal Lowalekar

Wayne State University Theses

Controlling a ground vehicle using only onboard and aerial camera views, can be a tedious task, as it is challenging for the operator to estimate information about the robots location and orientation using only these view. However the visual data can be sufficient for computerized calculation of this information even in the absence of other sensors. This approach is of interest to the military because the use of passive sensors instead of active sensors (e.g. LIDAR) would be easier and more reliable and would not give off detectable signatures.

The goal of this research was to control a ground vehicle …

Novel Inhibitors Of Lysine Specific Demethylase 1 As Epigenetic Modulators, Michael Crowley Jan 2011

Novel Inhibitors Of Lysine Specific Demethylase 1 As Epigenetic Modulators, Michael Crowley

Wayne State University Theses

The recently discovered enzyme lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) plays an important role in the epigenetic control of gene expression, and aberrant gene silencing secondary to LSD1 over expression is thought to contribute to the development of cancer. We recently reported a series of (bis)guanidines and (bis)biguanides that are potent inhibitors of LSD1, and induce the re-expression of aberrantly silenced tumor suppressor genes in tumor cells in vitro. We now report a new series of isosteres that are also potent inhibitors of LSD1. These compounds induce increases in methylation at the histone 3 lysine 4 (H3K4) chromatin mark, a specific target …

Outcomes, Adaptations And Performance: A Local Evaluation Of Shelter Plus Care, Sloan R. Herrick Jan 2011

Outcomes, Adaptations And Performance: A Local Evaluation Of Shelter Plus Care, Sloan R. Herrick

Wayne State University Theses

Individual outcomes and barriers to program implementation for Shelter Plus Care are presented in an exploratory study investigating the impact of a permanent supportive housing program - Shelter Plus Care - in Detroit, a city that faces unique challenges and complicated needs. Individual outcomes including improved housing stability, increased income and reports of enhanced self-sufficiency suggest the program is achieving the goals projected by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Despite positive outcomes for individual consumers, barriers to program implementation emerged as thematic problems for organizations running the program. The study provides recommendations that may increase the …

Neuropathological Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease: The Relationship Between Postmortem Assessment, Cognitive Function And Functional Status In Centenarians, Emily Elizabeth Richardson Jan 2011

Neuropathological Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease: The Relationship Between Postmortem Assessment, Cognitive Function And Functional Status In Centenarians, Emily Elizabeth Richardson

Wayne State University Theses

Several sets of neuropathological criteria have been used for the postmortem diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD), but few studies have examined these criteria in the oldest old. For this study, we examined a sample of centenarians, all of whom received AD assessments using four different neuropathological criteria: Khachaturian, Braak and Braak, CERAD, and NIA-R. Findings indicate that NIA-R criteria differed significantly from CERAD and Khachaturian criteria. In addition, NIA-R and CERAD criteria predicted performance on the MMSE and three FOME indices; Braak and Braak criteria predicted performance on the MMSE and one FOME index. Finally, we examined the relationship between …

Abstract

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE ON TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP

By: JOSEPH DAVID

December 2010

Advisor: Dr. Richard Raspa

Degree: Master of Interdisciplinary Studies

Many people in today's world often submit to broad assumptions, generalizations and faulty reasoning in determining what constitutes a competent leader. Qualities such as high energy, positive attitude and charisma are unfortunately the sole traits that elect leaders. While positive thinking does help to produce compelling visions to inspire people, high energy is necessary for leadership given the workload and charisma needed to win people over. These are components for election not successful leadership.

Such narrow sighted values for …

Probabilistic Models For Patient Scheduling, Adel Alaeddini Jan 2011

Probabilistic Models For Patient Scheduling, Adel Alaeddini

Wayne State University Theses

In spite of the success of theoretical appointment scheduling methods, there have been significant failures in practice primarily due to the rapid increase in the number of no-shows and cancelations from the individuals in recent times. These disruptions not only cause inconvenience to the management but also has a significant impact on the revenue, cost and resource utilization. In this research, we develop a hybrid probabilistic model based on logistic regression and Bayesian inference to predict the probability of no-shows in real-time. We also develop two novel non-sequential and sequential optimization models which can effectively use no-show probabilities for scheduling …

Characterization Of Poly (Rc) Binding Protein (Pcbp2) And Frataxin, Sudipa Ghimire-Rijal

Wayne State University Theses

Iron is a micronutrient that acts as a cofactor in many prosthetic groups involving itself in almost every biological process. Iron is the key component in our body fluid, flowing in our veins all the time. Iron deficiency disorders affects more than 9 million people worldwide. Similarly, a high level of iron is associated with various disorders which suggest that in order for body to function properly level of iron should be tightly regulated. Many iron binding proteins help in maintaining cellular iron homeostasis by keeping iron in reduced form.

Working on the hypothesis that Poly (rC) Binding Protein family …

An Experience Report Of The Solo Iterative Process, Christopher Dorman Jan 2011

An Experience Report Of The Solo Iterative Process, Christopher Dorman

Wayne State University Theses

The field of software engineering is over 50 years old; originally, mathematicians and engineers thought software development was more of an art form than a defined process. These first software engineers managed to produce a variety of complex, working software; however, many software engineers today use agile processes. This thesis is an experience report in an agile process called the Solo Iterative Process.

In this thesis, previous research is reviewed in previous solo processes, team processes, individual phases of software evolution and software evolution tools. Then the Solo Iterative Process is defined. To begin the experience report a subject software, …
