Scent glands (ScGs) are defensive glands that are found among a wide variety of insect orders. These glands represent a specialized function of the exocrine system; however, the developmental mechanism remains unclear. Previous functional studies of the endocrine glands revealed that the endocrine and tracheal systems utilize similar genetic regulatory networks which indicate that these systems have common primordia. In Drosophila, sal is localized in the prothoracic gland while in Oncopeltus the gene is localized in the duct cells of the abdominal scent glands (Hanna & Popadić, 2020; Sánchez-Higueras et al., 2014). Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) causes severe disease in immunocompromised individuals and is a leading cause of congenital disease. Efficient assembly of virions (viral particles) is an intricate process that requires modulation and modification of host systems. HCMV induces an extensive rearrangement of the cellular endocytic recycling compartment into the site of virion maturation and egress: the cytoplasmic virion assembly compartment (cVAC). Lipolysis is a metabolic pathway in which free fatty acids are mobilized from stored triglycerides. The rate-limiting enzyme in this process is adipose triglyceride lipase, which is regulated by α/β-hydrolase domain-containing protein 5 (ABHD5) via both natural and synthetic pathways. With advanced artificial neural networks, image processing methods can extract quantitative results from fluorescence images. The segmentation of complex biological images, in which regions of the image are labeled as distinct masks, is the first step in image analysis. Cytochrome c (Cytc) is a pivotal multifunctional mitochondrial protein that serves as a single electron carrier between complexes III and IV of the electron transport chain. It has important roles in both cellular respiration and apoptosis. The novel Thr49 (T49) phosphorylation of Cytc likely affects mitochondrial respiration, membrane potential, ROS production, ATP production, and apoptosis. Based on the functional characterization of previously mapped phosphorylation sites (Tyr97, Tyr48, Thr28, Ser47, Thr58) of the lab, we hypothesize that T49 phosphorylation will lead to controlled respiration, optimal intermediate mitochondrial membrane potential, lower ROS production, and inhibition of apoptosis compared to unphosphorylated Cytc. Two out of three people are obese in the United States, but Western culture isn’t the only population suffering from obesity and comorbidities. Many factors contribute to this global epidemic and more recently various research suggests that personality traits can be used to predict eating behaviors. This study investigated the Big Five personality trait’s influence on food consumption to determine what traits contribute to healthy eating and what traits are susceptible to overeating and therefore, poor health consequences. There has been a recent surge in popularity for cannabidiol (CBD), a major non-psychotropic constituent of cannabis, due to numerous claims of potential therapeutic properties, which include, but are not limited to, anxiolytic, antinociceptive, and anti-inflammatory effects. Ceruloplasmin (Cp) is a secreted ferroxidase produced by the hepatocytes that assists in the transport of iron throughout the human body. In human aceruloplasminemia patients, due to Cp deficiency excess intracellular iron buildup leads to ailments like liver cirrhosis, neurodegeneration, and blindness. We recently found that the biogenesis of Cp in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is regulated by a principal ER quality-control process, ER-associated degradation (ERAD). ERAD clears misfolded ER proteins for cytosolic proteasomal degradation, with the Sel-1 suppressor of lin-12-like (Sel1L)-HMG-CoA reductase degradation 1 (Hrd1) protein complex representing the most conserved branch in mammals. Historical and contemporary use of lead (Pb) in gasoline, paints, and industry have caused lead to be ubiquitous in the urban soil environment, disproportionately affecting low-income minority children. As soil is a major exposure pathway for children, an effective remediation technique for lead-contaminated soil is urgently needed. Common remediation techniques, such as excavation or soil capping, are expensive and environmentally destructive, especially on a city-wide residential basis. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most prevalent type of leukemia among children. It is characterized by chromosomal and genetic variations and abnormalities occurring in the leukemic cells. Prognosis predictors of ALL depend on risk-based stratification and the reaction to the initial therapy. Current treatment regimens of ALL contribute to the survival of approximately 80% of pediatric ALL patients with 90% 5-year event-free survival. Multiple sclerosis (MS) produces neurological impairments that are variable in duration and severity, and that are unique to each case of MS. In addition to variability of symptoms, the length of the MS diagnostic process often affects quality of life. In this mixed qualitative and quantitative study, we used ethnographic interviews to investigate the underlying thoughts and feelings of two very different individuals with MS and Spastic-Ataxic Dysarthria. The two that are most important and were discussed in this thesis are aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase) and dihydroorotase (DHOase). Both play an important role in not only pyrimidine biosynthesis production, but also mechanistic regulation of de novo synthesis. Anthrax is an infection caused by Bacillus anthracis. Background: The DNA base excision repair (BER) pathway is responsible for processing of genomic uracil lesions however, in some tissue types the excisional and gap-filling steps performed by UNG2 and POLβ, respectively, are impaired by folate deficiency in human and murine models in vitro. Genomic uracil damage can be acquired by inadequate conversion of uracil to thymine nucleotide precursors resulting from insufficient folate cofactors, or through activation induced cytosine deaminase (AID) activity during antibody diversification in B-cells in the context of adaptive immunity.
