Social Responsibility Perceptions Of Community Flood Resilience In Nigeria, Reginald Olisa Oranye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Flooding is a severe threat to livelihoods and socioeconomic development in Ogbaru riverine communities of Anambra State, Nigeria. Limited success in the traditional approach of using predominantly structural measures, such as flood channels, to manage floods makes it imperative to explore nonstructural resilience initiatives that would potentially better protect vulnerable flood-prone communities. This study contributes to addressing the problems of ineffective flood management by developing vital social responsibility (SR) data and information that can enhance community flood resilience through individual and collective responsibilities for resilient action. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to explore SR perceptions of flood …

Beyond Borders: Nigerian Diaspora, Men's Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence, Christiana Ifeyinwa Chineme
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Culture and social structures are factors in the way people view or think of intimate partner violence (IPV). A significant gap exists in the current literature regarding whether changes exist in IPV experience because of continuous and direct contact between individuals from different cultural origins. Despite the increasing emphasis on the social and structural determinants of IPV-related behaviors, research and interventions lag on how people view IPV while they live in their native country and when they migrate and are exposed to a different culture and social structure. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research was to explore the IPV …

Predicting Certification Success For The Family Nurse Practitioner, Tammy Lee Gravel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
High-stakes licensure or certification examinations are required for many health professions disciplines to ensure safe entry-level practice. Accrediting agencies set a benchmark for graduates' first-time licensure or certification success as a measure of program effectiveness. Failures of graduates on licensure or certification examinations may directly affect the school's recruitment and retention of qualified students and faculty, as well as institutional financial viability. A health science university has added Health Education System, Inc. (HESI) standardized examinations using computer adaptive testing into the family nurse practitioner (FNP) master's program to support certification success, although research on these advanced practice examinations as related …

The Effect Of Rules On Racially-Influenced Policing And Police Uses Of Force, Joe D. Mazza
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Public opinion polls have shown the public lacks confidence in U.S. police to use appropriate amounts of force and treat racial minorities fairly, which undermines police legitimacy and the quality of life of all citizens. Although rules have been shown to positively constrain police uses of force, researchers have not demonstrated the effect of rules on racially influenced policing (RIP). In 2005, the RIP directive which prohibits officers from using race as a factor in taking discretionary actions was promulgated in New Jersey. The purpose of this study was to determine through the theoretical lens of Lipsky's street-level bureaucrat theory …
Principals As Instructional Leaders As Opposed To School Managers, Lolita Annette Rockette
Principals As Instructional Leaders As Opposed To School Managers, Lolita Annette Rockette
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the Denver metropolitan area, many elementary school principals have been focused more on management than on instructional leadership issues, even though school administrators have been charged with overseeing academic achievement based on state and federal standards. According to research, participating in these 2 disconnected roles hinders principals' ability to achieve the academic and social success of their students. Guided by Bandura's self-efficacy theory and Hallinger's distributed leadership theories, this qualitative study explored factors that influenced 6 principals' adoption of the instructional leadership role to learn how principals might shift from managing the school to becoming its instructional leader.
