A Helping Hand Through Dying Light, Jason Moessing
A Helping Hand Through Dying Light, Jason Moessing
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Many people go into martial relationships with a previous history of childhood maltreatment. This can cause marital problems later on in the marriage if steps are not taken to help the individual heal from the abuse. To find relevant information to help in this understanding, a diverse amount of websites were researched including blogs, scholarly articles, data observations, and therapy websites. Past history of childhood maltreatment can cause lasting problems in marriages, but when couples decide to find help those marriages can become beautiful symbols of love. Men and women have been found to react differently to different types of …
Temporal Expectations In Delay Of Gratification, Jeremy M. Haynes, Mariah E. Willis-Moore, D. Perez, Devanio J. Cousins, Amy L. Odum
Temporal Expectations In Delay Of Gratification, Jeremy M. Haynes, Mariah E. Willis-Moore, D. Perez, Devanio J. Cousins, Amy L. Odum
Psychology Faculty Publications
We examined how temporal expectations influence preference reversals in a delay of gratification task for rats based on a hypothesis of Rachlin (2000), who suggested that preference for a larger-later reward may shift in favor of a smaller-immediate reward as a result of changes in when that larger reward is expected. To explore Rachlin’s hypothesis, we pre-exposed two groups of rats to the delays associated with a larger-later reinforcer from a delay of gratification task. One group experienced the delays as a function of their choices in an intertemporal choice task and the other group experienced delays yoked from the …

Bipoc Contributions Are Largely Excluded From Introductory Social Work Textbooks, Porscha Doucette
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
The National Association of Social Workers first added social justice to its Code of Ethics in 1979. However, the major focus for social justice was outside the profession itself. In order to genuinely work towards social justice, lingering institutional racism and white supremacy must be identified and rectified at every level of the profession, including its education.
Chicanos' Negotiation Of Language And Culture With Standard English In Cache Valley, Ut, Vanessa Garcia Vazquez
Chicanos' Negotiation Of Language And Culture With Standard English In Cache Valley, Ut, Vanessa Garcia Vazquez
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Gloria Anzaldúa theorized that the Chicano English, which she felt best depicted her identity, is seen by educators and American society as an "illegitimate, bastard language" (1987). The stereotypical view on various language variations and vernaculars has contributed to this idea that non-standard English is "illegitimate" or wrong. A Chicano's first language is essentially both English and Spanish. They typically begin speaking Spanish at the beginning of their lives and shortly after they begin to learn English at school. However, this new language is introduced before they can learn the first—which produces a mix of both languages and is commonly …
Examining Cultural And Chemical Treatments To Fusarium Bulb Rot In Onions, Tim Miller
Examining Cultural And Chemical Treatments To Fusarium Bulb Rot In Onions, Tim Miller
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Onions are grown in 1,500 acres in northern Utah and are a large part of growers' income. In the fall of 2021, 30% of a grower's onion yield was affected by Fusarium bulb rot (caused by a fungus known as Fusarium proliferatum) and the onions were unmarketable. The literature surrounding this pathogen is sparse and losses of this magnitude could cause growers to lose between six and seven thousand dollars per acre. Samples of the fungus were plated onto potato dextrose agar at half strength and maintained fresh throughout the winter. In vitro experiments were performed with various fungicides at …
Reversing The Gaze: Using Indigenous And Western Media Frames To Compare Coverage Of Climate Change And Indigenous Peoples In The News Media, Eric Wilkes
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
The news media acts as an important conduit for shaping societal views of the socio-politics of climate change. While climate change will indeed affect everyone, it will not affect everyone equally. Indigenous peoples are among the populations whose well-being is threatened the most by climate change. International scholarship finds it is not uncommon for Indigenous cultures, communities, and perspectives to be underrepresented and misrepresented in Western climate change media. Research also indicates that fair Indigenous representation occurs when Indigenous peoples are the authors of news articles themselves. We performed a comparative content analysis of media coverage of climate change, environmental …
Keep Sweet: An Ideological Analysis Of The Flds Cult Led By Warren Jeffs, Kassidi Andrus
Keep Sweet: An Ideological Analysis Of The Flds Cult Led By Warren Jeffs, Kassidi Andrus
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
This presentation is an ideological criticism of the 'keep sweet' ideology that contributes to the hegemonic society of the FLDS religious cult led by Warren Jeffs. The fundamentalists of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are a cult that practices polygamy and communalism. According to Michael McGee, humans are not conditioned directly to beliefs but to a vocabulary of concepts, called ideographs, that function as guides, excuses for behavior, and act as building blocks for an ideology. Two ideographs will be analyzed: perfection and obedience.
The Effects Of Raising A Child With Companion Animals, Abby Murcray
The Effects Of Raising A Child With Companion Animals, Abby Murcray
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
What were the effects on children who were raised with companion animals? As someone who has grown up with companion animals most of my life, I wanted to learn what impact the animals had on my growth and development. The research was conducted using library and internet resources to locate both primary and secondary resources. For this study, I looked at specific studies done on children that are surrounded by companion animals versus those that are not, using mostly Utah State's Academic Search Ultimate to find my sources. Raising a child with a domestic animal benefits a child in many …

Music Therapy As An Alternative To Traditional Therapy, Andrew Rasmussen
Music Therapy As An Alternative To Traditional Therapy, Andrew Rasmussen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
I have always been fascinated by music and its ability to help myself focus and influence my mood. I never knew there was a specific therapy based on music itself. Originally I had planned to make an essay around if music was helpful for dementia research, which sadly was proven to be one hundred percent true and there was no room for an argument. In response I looked more into music therapy, and realized just how viable this form of therapy is. I personally evaluated around 20 sites worth of material, this allowed me to form a strong idea of …
Active Analysis In Secondary Education, Alisha Grant
Active Analysis In Secondary Education, Alisha Grant
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
My research project is about the use of Konstantin Stanislavski's acting method of active analysis in secondary education. I am a student teacher at a middle school this semester and I decided to utilize active analysis in my classroom. It is a method of acting that involves using movement as well as text analysis to learn more about the character an actor is embodying. Active analysis is newer to the United States and has only just in the past year had a full English translation be printed. I wanted to see if active analysis could be used just as effectively …
Impact Of Cannabinoids On Human Neural Differentiation And Oxidative Stress Response, Emily Brothersen, Dillon Weatherston, Ashton Young, Bryan Gustafson
Impact Of Cannabinoids On Human Neural Differentiation And Oxidative Stress Response, Emily Brothersen, Dillon Weatherston, Ashton Young, Bryan Gustafson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Cannabinoids are a group of over 144 known compounds extracted from hemp species. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in hemp, and the non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) are the most commonly known and most well studied cannabinoids. As cannabinoids can be sold for medicinal or recreational purposes, it's important to understand the impact of these cannabinoids on the brain. To explore the effects of cannabinoids on neural development, undifferentiated SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells were used as a model of fetal neurons. SH-SY5Y cells were fully differentiated in the presence of no cannabinoids, THC, and/or CBD and analyzed for any developmental differences. In …
Latinx Culture Centers At Utah Universities: An Analysis Of Services And Web Presence, Vanessa Garcia Vazquez
Latinx Culture Centers At Utah Universities: An Analysis Of Services And Web Presence, Vanessa Garcia Vazquez
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Many universities offer culture centers for their minority students to support them as they navigate school. The purpose of this research is to see what student services are being offered to minority students, specifically Latinx students, at public universities in Utah. The universities analyzed were Utah State University, Weber State Univeresity, University of Utah, and Utah Tech University. The argument is framed using an analysis of the websites of the centers at these 4 universities, and interviews of staff and faculty overseeing these centers in the state of Utah. The findings of this research should push for future discourse about …
Developing A Test Method To Determine The Maximum Allowable Leakage Limit Of Microbial Ingress For Dialysis Films, Lexi Phillips
Developing A Test Method To Determine The Maximum Allowable Leakage Limit Of Microbial Ingress For Dialysis Films, Lexi Phillips
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
The purpose of this project is to design and develop a testing-apparatus and test-method to measure the maximum allowable leakage limit (MALL) for films used by Fresenius Medical Care (FMC). The MALL is the greatest leak size that does not pose a risk to the product. This is the first step in developing container closure integrity testing for sterile containers. This test is designed using guidance from USP 1207, a document detailing integrity assurance of packages holding sterile medical products, and 21 CFR 211. This test is focusing on microbial ingress rather than physical or chemical leakage. The test-method design …
Black Scholes Delta Hedge In Imperfect Markets, Mitchell Pound
Black Scholes Delta Hedge In Imperfect Markets, Mitchell Pound
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
The Black-Scholes model for pricing European call options relies on continuous delta hedging with prices distributed log-normally with a known, constant volatility. This only works in a perfect, "frictionless" market. We simulate cumulative returns for a market maker using a discrete delta hedge with different time intervals between rebalancing the portfolio. A Julia package is developed by the authors to achieve this goal, which will be open source for the benefit of the public. Using the Julia package, we estimated the distribution of cumulative returns for a delta hedged portfolio by Monte Carlo analysis. This is done using both a …

Tissue Engineered Representation Of Human Blood Vessel Using Hagfish Protein, Parker Goldsberry, Hayden Johns, Jaden Storrer, Jessop Oliver
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Scaffolds used in in vitro cellular growth are a common method of more accurately representing the structure and extracellular matrix of the tissue being grown. Tissue engineers are constantly testing novel biomaterials as scaffolds to determine their representativity of native tissue. One of these such biomaterials is hagfish protein, which when bound together or cross-linked has properties similar to many tissues found in the body. Specifically, there are some properties that could make it a viable option for human blood vessels. Being a simpler organ than most, comparatively, it is also a prime selection for in vitro studies attempting to …

All Current Publications
This fact sheet outlines considerations for using solar-powered irrigation in Utah:
• Solar powered irrigation (SPI) is becoming more cost effective and practical to consider on the farm as the cost of alternative sources of energy are rising.
• Irrigators can now benefit from incentives such as tax credits to help offset costs.
• Investing in solar provides more independence from price fluctuations and energy shortages.
• Considerations for SPI systems include energy demand of the irrigation system, type and value of crops grown, available incentives and support, cost and accessibility of alternative energy sources, and multiple uses of the …
Assessing The Impact Of Storage Time And Shape Of The Block On The Slicability Of Commercial Cheddar Cheese, Nathan Pace
Assessing The Impact Of Storage Time And Shape Of The Block On The Slicability Of Commercial Cheddar Cheese, Nathan Pace
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Cheddar cheese is one of the world's most popular cheeses and is consumed in blocks and slices. The slicability of cheddar cheese can depend on textural and rheological properties. Understanding these characteristics can enhance desirability and reduce material loss occurring during slicing. In this study, we focused on four main parameters: slice thickness, cheese shape, storage period, and cheese type. Four thicknesses (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm) and two shapes (triangular and square) of mild, medium, sharp, and extra sharp were selected. Cheeses were purchased from Walmart and the Utah State University creamery. At first, cheese blocks were cut …

Laughing All The While: Race, Gender, And Recreational Violence In The Mechanisms Fanwork, Katelyn Allred
Laughing All The While: Race, Gender, And Recreational Violence In The Mechanisms Fanwork, Katelyn Allred
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
From 1960s housewives exchanging Star Trek zines, to early-internet Harry Potter message boards, to small pockets of community on modern social media, fans have been connecting over their shared love of a source material for decades, and the Internet has made creating and finding both original and fan content more accessible around the globe. This kind of worldwide connection brings people into contact with people they might not meet otherwise and can foster an awareness of others' lives and perspectives. Though fandom has always been at least subtextually political, the last few years have brought more and more conscious use …
One More Clever Writer Gone Wrong': A Critical Pentadic Analysis Of The Reception Of Kate Chopin's 'The Awakening', Maren Archibald
One More Clever Writer Gone Wrong': A Critical Pentadic Analysis Of The Reception Of Kate Chopin's 'The Awakening', Maren Archibald
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
In 1898, Kate Chopin was a generally well-received author of short stories, her previous works described as "clever." But after the publication of her 1899 novel "The Awakening," Chopin's reputation was destroyed. To better understand the novel's disastrous failure, I will present a pentadic analysis of two initial reviews of the novel published in local newspapers. Corse and Westervelt explain that "the dominant interpretive strategy of reviewers in 1899 was built on assumptions of reading as moral instruction and of women as selfless nurturers." Reading with these assumptions, critics were appalled at the immoral and selfish behavior depicted in the …
Inter-Step Height Variation And Observations Of Fall-Related Events During Stairway Negotiation, Shandon Poulsen
Inter-Step Height Variation And Observations Of Fall-Related Events During Stairway Negotiation, Shandon Poulsen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
INTRODUCTION: Variation in step height within a stairway could negatively impact safe stairway negotiation by decreasing step height predictability, and consequently, increasing stair users' fall risk. Unfortunately, inter-stairway step height variability is common, particularly in older stairways, but its impact may be lessened by highlighting steps' edges using high-contrast stripes on the top front edge of each step. Such contrast enhancement may draw greater attention to the steps' edges and potentially enhance the precision of the edge's estimated location. PURPOSE: To determine (1) if fall-related events are associated with greater inter-step height variation, and (2) if such fall-related events are …
What's With The Web? A Cross-Culture Web Design Analysis, Dylan Johnson
What's With The Web? A Cross-Culture Web Design Analysis, Dylan Johnson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
The internet has flourished into a global marketplace of goods, services, and ideas. With this surge in cross-culture interactions, we must turn our attention to the commonalities and differences in our web-based world. Despite potential language barriers, users want to interact with overseas markets. But how do westerners try to find tourism destinations? How do they shop online through overseas websites? Are there any frustrations or design differences that can create gaps? By conducting interviews with two native Japanese people who have extensively interacted with US and Japanese internet, this study hopes to hear of their perceptions and experiences with …
Facilitative Parasitization Of Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Eggs Between Native And Invasive Trissolcus Wasps, Zachary Ross
Facilitative Parasitization Of Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Eggs Between Native And Invasive Trissolcus Wasps, Zachary Ross
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys, BMSB) is an extremely successful invasive species with over 300 different host plants ranging from ornamental to agricultural species. One of the primary controls of BMSB in their native range is the parasitoid wasp Trissolcus japonicus (T.j). While T.j has the ability to control BMSB populations, native species of parasitoid wasp have also been documented targeting BMSB eggs, although with minimal success. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether or not a beneficial facilitative relationship existed between the invasive Trissolcus japonicus and the native egg parasitoid Trissolcus euschisti (T. eu). …
Why America Should Switch To Nuclear Energy As Its Primary Power Source, William Fike
Why America Should Switch To Nuclear Energy As Its Primary Power Source, William Fike
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
While nuclear waste and public fear hurt the image of nuclear energy, I believe that nuclear energy should be used instead of alternative power sources because it is safe, carbon-free, and more fuel efficient than alternative energy sources. Nuclear power is the process of using uranium 235 to make energy. Nuclear energy is a very clean and safe energy producer. My target audience would be someone who does not know a lot about nuclear power. Or they are possibly scared because of past nuclear disasters. My goal in this poster is to convince you that nuclear power is safe and …
The Continuing Value Of 20th Century Modernist Architecture, Mattheus Wardle
The Continuing Value Of 20th Century Modernist Architecture, Mattheus Wardle
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
20th century modernist architecture has begun to age in the 21st century, and the debate of its preservation has begun as well. As the defining architectural style of the 1920s through the 1970s, modernism displayed progressive materials and ideas of the time. In its application, however, it often mirrored the societal injustices it was meant to solve. This project analyzes the various characteristics of modernist architecture and their lasting importance. By looking at the theory surrounding modernism and specific built examples, I argue that the interactions between the style and society provides a way to understand how the built environment …

Isolation Of Bacterial And Fungal Microbes From The Rhizosphere Of Shepherdia Utahensis 'Torrey', Ty Wilson, Katie Hewitt
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
My presentation is on the Isolation of Bacterial and Fungal Microbes from the Rhizosphere of Shepherdia x utahensis 'Torrey' also known as Hybrid Buffaloberry. Hybrid Buffaloberry is a combination between two varieties native to the Intermountain West: Shepherdia argentea, a highly drought tolerant variety, and Shepherdia rotundifolia, a common more aesthetically pleasing variety. Both native varieties are well documented to have nodule forming microbes that help aid their development in such harsh conditions. We acquired our Rhizosphere sample by shaking the roots and nodules from our sample in a phosphate buffer and serially diluted it to a useful concentration. We …
