Assessing Achievement On A First-Grade Economics Course Of Study, A. Guy Larkins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Problem

Despite the surge of interest in economic education in the elementary school in the last two decades, there have been very few attempts to assess the ability of young children to learn economic concepts. In the primary grades, this problem is compounded by the difficulty of measuring knowledge in six and seven year old children.

Objectives

The primary objective of this dissertation was to determine whether first-grade children can learn the basic concepts in Our Working World: Families at Work. Since instruments suitable for assessing achievement on Families at Work were not available when this study was initiated, …

Foods prepared electronically and by the combination method required significantly less time with the exception of lemon cake. Foods prepared by the combination and conventional methods were preferred by the taste panel over foods prepared electronically with the exception of custard which was rated superior to custard cooked …

Systemic Studies Of The Genus Gila (Cyprinidae) Of The Colorado River Basin, Paul Bernard Holden May 1968

Systemic Studies Of The Genus Gila (Cyprinidae) Of The Colorado River Basin, Paul Bernard Holden

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three Hundred and nine specimens of Gila from the Colorado River basin were studied. A form of numerical taxonomy, taximetrics, was used to help classify the specimens. The data from these fish indicate that many of the present hypotheses concerning their taxonomy are not valid. The concept of ecosubspecies or ecological subspecies does not fit the Colorado basin Gila. The roundtail and bonytail chubs, G. robusta Baird and Girard and G. elegans Baird and Girard respectively, currently treated as subspecies, are well separated morphologically, ecologically and reproductively and therefore are better considered two valid species. The relationship between G. …

A Study Of Scholastic Achievement And Physical Performance At Logan Junior High School, Richard Sackett May 1967

A Study Of Scholastic Achievement And Physical Performance At Logan Junior High School, Richard Sackett

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

It has been a common statement by many educators that the athletic type is a person who has "more brawn than brain." Many people assume that low physical ability usually accompanies superior mental ability and high physical ability usually accompanies inferior mental ability. Some members of the academic faculty object to relinquishing school time for athletic and sporting activities. They assume that the majority of the students involved are of the poorer academic type and cannot afford to miss school time for sporting and athletic activities. Research on previous studies support the contention that mental achievement and physical fitness are …

A Study Of The Natural Rubber Industry, With Special Reference To Thailand, Suratana Vayagool May 1967

A Study Of The Natural Rubber Industry, With Special Reference To Thailand, Suratana Vayagool

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relative share of natural rubber in the world's total rubber consumption had been decreasing from 75 percent in 1948- 1949 to 44.4 percent in 1965. Since the production of natural rubber has been rising over the same period, some predictions have been made indicating that there will be a surplus of production over consumption of natural rubber in the near future.

In the world output of natural rubber industry, Thailand ranks third, being surpassed only by Malaysia and Indonesia. Of all the exports of Thailand, rubber ranks second in value and is exceeded only by rice. Almost all of …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ditylenchus dipsaci (Kuhn) Filipjev. is one of the most destructive nematodes to crop plants. It attacks and damages more than 300 species of cultivated and uncultivated plants. The nematode can be differentiated into many races, each of them having a preference for a group or even a single plant species.

Alfalfa stem nematode is one of the races in this species which attacks the above ground portion of alfalfa but does not infest the roots. Larvae of this nematode may migrate from the plant tissue to soil in moist conditions. These nematodes migrate actively to nearby plants or are carried …

A Monte Carlo Study Of Non-Linear Regression Theory, Ya-Ming Liu May 1966

A Monte Carlo Study Of Non-Linear Regression Theory, Ya-Ming Liu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Multiple regression provides the capability of using non-linear functions to fit various curvilinear surfaces. These non-linear functions are, however, linear in the parameters. Non-linear term of the variables such as X2, X3, ln X, X, YX are incorporated in a linear model. For example:

Y = b0 + b1 x1 + b2 x12 + b3 lnx2 + ϵ

Many practical situations require the fitting of mathematical functions which are non-linear in the parameters and perhaps the variables. For example:

Y = b, eb2X + ϵ

A Field Study Of Miscible Displacement In Saturated Soils, Lloyd Dowley Mcfadden Sadler May 1963

A Field Study Of Miscible Displacement In Saturated Soils, Lloyd Dowley Mcfadden Sadler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Extensive research has been carried out in both field and laboratory to explain water and solute movement under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. The importance of such work is obvious, since any attempt at exploring land reclamation by leaching or nutrient movement in plant feeding (to name only two) is subject to interpretations and theories of moisture flow.

Water flow through soil during reclamation by leaching can be termed miscible displacement since soil water and leaching water do not have a distinct fluid-fluid interface and will physically mix. It is probable that miscible displacement investigations can contribute to an understanding …

A Further Study Of Perceptual Defense, Alma L. Carlisle May 1963

A Further Study Of Perceptual Defense, Alma L. Carlisle

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For many years, psychologists have been trying to find the relationship between perception and different factors of personality. Different experimental techniques were constructed to measure these concepts. One of the tools used to measure personality factors and their effect on perception was the tachistoscope. Through the use of this instrument, words or pictures could be flashed on a screen at varying rates of speed, or illumination. The subject upon watching these flashes, would relate the information which he perceived.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In many parts of the world where milk production is limited, there is an opportunity to process dairy foods from imported concentrated milk products. Dry ingredients can be shipped conveniently and some can be stored several months generally without deterioration. In these milk deficient areas, dried ingredients of good quality and with proper processing should increase the use and consumption of dairy products.

A large supply of high quality milk by-products which are fit for human consumption are available in the world today.

Many investigators and manufacturers have used dried milk by-products as a source of milk solids in frozen …

They learned something of our American way of life and enjoyed it enough to want to share in it. They knew that to be able to compete with others they would have to get an education and be able to speak English. When these veterans and defense workers returned to the reservation after the war, they started a movement to get the children into school. This movement grew until 91 percent of all school age children were in school in 1957 compared with 32 percent in 1945 when the movement started.

A Study To Determine The Content Of An Industrial Arts Program In The Elementary Schools Of Box Elder County, Charles M. Hawkes

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The child is the reason for the school. He is the one for whom learning experiences are provided. Our understanding of the child as a growing individual and as a learner, his personality and his purposes and interests, supply the foundation for developing an effective educational program.

No longer do we look at the education program as a sole preparation for some future life. Instead it has now become more a process whereby we make the most of present living in order that we might live a more full and rich life each day. Education is something that goes on …

A Study Of Elementary Physical Education At The Whittier School, Logan, Utah, Phyllis C. Jacobson May 1954

A Study Of Elementary Physical Education At The Whittier School, Logan, Utah, Phyllis C. Jacobson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the First World War, there has been an increased recognition for the need of physical education in the elementary school. Although educators recognize and agree on the need, they are not in agreement as to how to best achieve this need. Some educators believe that physical education should be taught as a specialized subject. Through this means, instruction is provided by a specialist who is trained in physical education. Some educators believe that physical education should be integrated with every other phase of the school program and taught by the classroom teacher. There are other educators who believe that …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Each person in education from the Commissioner of Education down to the classroom teacher is concerned with administration. Each has administrative duties. The way these duties are conducted and carried out will have a direct influence on the outcome of any physical education program and each child within this program.

Through the Tenth Amendment responsibility for the administration of education has been turned over to the various states. Most of the states through their constitutions place the responsibility upon the legislature to provide for organization and maintenance of public school systems. This body then draws up the statutory laws and …

Physical education has made unusually rapid progress during the past 50 years. Emphasis has deviated from absolute academic objectives to those permitting a well rounded educational program including the physical aspect. Physical education has been influenced by educational, spiritual, political, and social conditions.

As a result of these influences, the necessity of developing the physical has assumed major proportions. There is now a greater demand for physical education than ever before in the history of our country. For the welfare of not only the individual, but also to the state and nation, it is essential that an extremely high degree …

A Study Of Semisterility And Its Lineage Relationships In Translocation Stocks Of Barley, Horace Marr Waddoups May 1949

A Study Of Semisterility And Its Lineage Relationships In Translocation Stocks Of Barley, Horace Marr Waddoups

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Barley (Hordrium sp.) is the most important spring sown cereal crop in Utah, both in acreage and in yield of total digestible nutrients per unit area. It also rates high as a feed crop in the United States. For this reason it is important that varieties are available which are high in yield, high in quality, and disease resistant, along with other desirable characteristics. In order to work toward this end most efficiently, it is first necessary that the genetics of the barley plant be worked out.

A Study Of The Equilibria Between Bentonite And The Various Replacing Agents In Alcoholic And Water Solutions, Joel E. Fletcher

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Investigators in soils have long recognized the importance of the colloidal fraction of soil, and also the almost inseparable problem of replaceable bases. It is generally accepted that the replaceable base fraction of a colloid controls to a large degree the physical properties exhibited by it. Volumes of work have been written on the problem of controlling the reactions of this fraction and on studies of the properties exhibited by it when it is saturated with various cations. Each worker has proceeded in his own individual way or followed the example set by some previous worker with specific modifications.

A Study Of Certain Economic Factors Involved In The Organization And Management Of Poultry Farms In Utah, Robert L. Wrigley Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the organization and management of poultry farming many problems arise which call for a solution. Among such problems are the following: The amount of floor space per hen which will prove the most economical, the value of electric lights in poultry houses, amount of labor which can be profitably invested in a poultry flock, and the amount of feed which can be economically fed to poultry.

There are many influences which determine poultry profits that cannot be controlled directly, but the factors mentioned here are largely within the control of the poultryman. He should, therefore, direct them as far …

A Study Of The Seasonal History Of Alfalfa Flowers As Related To Seed Production, John W. Carlson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A few researches have been concerned with the structure and pollination of alfalfa flowers. Others have considered the biological problems concerned in the pollination and fecundation of the flowers. In none of these studies, however, has an attempt been made to follow carefully the alfalfa flowers through various stages of development. Nor has any effort been made to determine what effect the condition and duration of these stages may have upon the resulting seed crop.

The work that follows is a study of the changes through which the alfalfa flowers pass during the season while functioning as organs of seed …

A Study Of Size Inheritance In Wheat, Peter Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The results presented in this paper are from data accumulated by a study of the F3 generation of a cross between the two varieties, Sevier and New Zealand wheat. This cross was made during the summer of 1920 by Professor George Stewart with the object of combining the high-yielding power of Sevier with the strong straw of New Zealand. In the fall of 1922 the problem was assigned to me, at which time I selected about 150 superior plants, possessing the desired characteristics, at least so far as appearance was concerned. Since then these plants and the F3 generation have …
