Active Analysis In The Beginning Acting Classroom, Michael Shipley Oct 2023

Active Analysis In The Beginning Acting Classroom, Michael Shipley

Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

Often, the exercises in the acting classroom can feel at odds with the processes used in the rehearsal room. I believe Konstantin Stanislavsky’s rehearsal method of Active Analysis provides tools and perspectives for dealing with these challenges. At The S Word Symposium in November 2022, I outlined a process I developed for teaching beginning acting using principles of Active Analysis as a tool to bridge the gap between training and rehearsing. This article outlines the experiences and thought processes that went into creating this class structure and reviews the benefits for students. Applied in this way, Stanislavsky’s impulse to place …

Collective And Creative Learning To Enhance Interlibrary Loan, Lars Leon, Carol A. Kochan

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

The resource sharing community has a proud history of sharing knowledge through conferences, workshops, and online resources in support of training and development. People have enjoyed these opportunities and received various levels of benefit depending on access and whether instruction aligns with the methods they learn best. However, it is clear there aren't enough collective actions to meet the needs. We hosted a series of focus groups on training and development to find out from participants what has worked for them, what is still needed, how they learn best, and the types of training and information that will help them …

Writing Centers should teach tutors how to praise to create a better experience for students and tutors alike. Tutors are often encouraged to give praise in their comments and conversations with students, but are rarely instructed on how to do so effectively. This article examines the purpose of praise in tutoring, why it is important for tutors to learn how to praise, and what strategies may be used to teach praise to tutors.

Training And Pruning Tart Cherries, Sheriden M. Hansen, Tiffany Maughan, Brent Black

All Current Publications

Training and pruning tart cherry trees is critical to the production of quality fruit. The benefits of proper pruning and training are abundant yields of high-quality fruit. Pruning and training early in the life of the tree is critical to establish the desired tree form, and to make future pruning and maintenance less complicated. It is important to note that not every tree will be picture-perfect, as trees are unique in their shape and form, however, following proper pruning principles will give imperfect trees the best opportunity to produce fruit. The main objectives of pruning are to 1) develop good …

Virtual Reference Power Boost: Conducting A Chat Transcript Analysis At Utah State University, Teagan Eastman, Mckenzie Hyde, Katie Strand, Mckenzie Hyde

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

Chat reference at USU Libraries has decreased since introducing the service. In order to understand this trend, we analyzed a year’s worth of chat transcripts from August 2016 to August 2017. In addition to examining the types and timing of patron questions, we coded qualities of the chat interactions themselves. We will share how the results of our analysis might inform future changes to the chat reference service and staff training in an effort to “level up” the library’s virtual reference.

Counseling in audiology is an important aspect of service delivery. How audiologists interact with patients and foster counseling relationships to help patients and families understand and live with hearing loss can impact outcomes of audiological interventions. Currently, variability exists in how graduate training programs are teaching counseling skills, and the extent to which counseling skills development is supported in clinical experiences is unclear. This article seeks to explore the perspectives related to the importance of counseling and counseling training experiences received through clinical instruction of Au.D. students beginning their final year of study, to identify where counseling training might be …

Graduate programs emerging in universities over recent decades support the advanced study of sustainability issues in complex socio-environmental systems. Constructing the problem-scope to address these issues requires graduate students to integrate across disciplines and synthesize the social and natural dimensions of sustainability. Graduate programs that are designed to foster inter- and transdisciplinary research acknowledge the importance of training students to use integrative research approaches. However, this training is not available in all graduate programs that support integrative research, often requiring students to seek external training opportunities. We present perspectives from a group of doctoral students with diverse disciplinary backgrounds conducting …

Ultimate Spoons, Mealii Enos

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

Amber Rae: Yes, so it is played at the student athlete mentor spring training, um it’s a tradition that we have continued to do annually, we do it at the end of the first night of training as kind of our final, fun, competition after we’ve covered a lot of in depth information. And it’s, played similarly to spoons, um, with cards and ss—having the number of spoons minus on of the number of competitors. However the difference is that we play at the Bear Lake Training Center and we play by, hiding the spoons throughout the room um in …

The office at ABC pediatric dentistry is bright, colorful, and has a very open concept. It is a place designed for children. The first thing patients notice when they walk in are the building blocks and toys. They can also see the giant glass windows that allow them to look into the north cleaning bay. The purpose of this is to lead by example. They can see other children getting their teeth cleaned, so they feel more comfortable letting us clean their teeth. Each colored chair has a TV placed above it and the children get to choose from one …

Cognitive Task Analysis-Based Training: A Metaanalysisof Studies, Colby Tofel-Grehl, David F. Feldon Sep 2013

Cognitive Task Analysis-Based Training: A Metaanalysisof Studies, Colby Tofel-Grehl, David F. Feldon

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Cognitive task analysis (CTA) is enjoying growing popularity in both research and practice as a foundational element of instructional design. However, there exists relatively little research exploring its value as a foundation for training through controlled studies. Furthermore, highly individualized approaches to conducting CTA do not permit broadly generalizable conclusions to be drawn from the findings of individual studies. Thus, examining the magnitude of observed effects across studies from various domains and CTA practitioners is essential for assessing replicable effects. This study reports the findings from a meta-analysis that examines the overall effectiveness of CTA across practitioners and settings in …

Instructional Team Training: Delivering Live, Internet Courses To Teachers And Paraprofessionals In Utah, Idaho And Pennsylvania, D. E. Forbush, Robert L. Morgan

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

Shortages of fully qualified special education teachers have been present in rural, suburban and urban America since the formal inception of special education. Public schools have mitigated special education teacher shortages by hiring paraprofessionals. Though hiring of paraprofessionals has been common practice, it is becoming more difficult to recruit and retain paraprofessionals once hired due to factors related to, or exacerbated by, the lack of pre-service training that teachers receive to effectively supervise paraprofessionals. In response to this training need, a project developed, implemented, and evaluated two live internet-based real-time video and audio courses delivered to teachers and paraprofessionals in …
