Incomplete Compensation And Migration Behavior: Has Anything Changed Between 1990 And 2000?, William E. Herrin, David E. Clark, Thomas Knapp, Nancy White Dec 2006

Incomplete Compensation And Migration Behavior: Has Anything Changed Between 1990 And 2000?, William E. Herrin, David E. Clark, Thomas Knapp, Nancy White

School of International Studies Faculty Articles

Spatial equilibrium models rely on migration to arbitrage away differences in utility across locations net of moving costs, where remaining differences in wages and rents reflect the compensating differentials related to site-specific amenities. Recent refinements to the spatial equilibrium model focus upon the prospect of disequilibrium in amenity markets. Amenity market disequilibrium implies over- or undercompensation (incomplete compensation) across some locations, which suggests a role for these factors in subsequent migration. This paper follows the theoretical and empirical approach of Clark, Herrin, Knapp, and White (2003). An intercity wage regression is estimated where fixed effects capture the impact of site …

Characterization Of Host Cell Death Induced By Chlamydia Trachomatis, Songmin Ying, Silke F. Fischer, Matthew A. Pettengill, Debye Conte, Stefan A. Paschen, David M. Ojcius, Georg Hacker

Chlamydia are obligate intracellular bacteria that modulate apoptosis of the host cell. Strikingly, chlamydial infection has been reported both to inhibit and to induce apoptosis. Although the ability to inhibit apoptosis has been corroborated by the identification of cellular targets, confirmation of cell death induction has been complicated by a mixture of apoptotic features and atypical cell death during infection, as well as by differences in the experimental techniques used to measure cell death. Here we use a panel of well-established approaches in the study of apoptosis to define the form of cell death induced by Chlamydia trachomatis infection. Infected …

Tris(1,9-Diethyladeninium) Triiodide Diiodide, Elizabeth F. Day, Norman S. Dean, Andreas H. Franz Sep 2006

Tris(1,9-Diethyladeninium) Triiodide Diiodide, Elizabeth F. Day, Norman S. Dean, Andreas H. Franz

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

X-ray analysis of the title compound reveals three crystallographically distinct cations of 1,9-diethyladeninium, two iodide anions and one triiodide anion in the asymmetric unit, giving six residues and the formula 3C9H14N5+·I3-·2I-. Standard purine nomenclature is used to identify the atoms of each adenine moiety. Hydrogen bonding is observed between atoms N6 and N7 of a pair of cations [N...N = 2.885 (4)/2.902 (3) and 2.854 (3)/2.854 (3) Å], with additional hydrogen bonding to I- anions via the other N6 H atom [N...I = 3.708 (3), 3.738 (3) and 3.638 (3) Å]. The triiodide anion is not involved in hydrogen bonding. …

Homework As An Outcome Assessment: Relationships Between Homework And Test Performance, Abel Fernandez, Camilla M. Saviz, Jeffrey S. Burmeister

All Faculty Presentations - School of Engineering and Computer Science

Homework imposes a significant load on undergraduate engineering students and faculty, and typically represents 10 to 30 percent of a student’s final course grade. One of the fundamental purposes of homework is to help students master the course material, mastery ultimately assessed through quizzes, tests and a final examination. To understand whether homework grades are a significant factor in determining student performance on tests, a study was conducted to examine the correlation between individual student scores on homework, quizzes, tests and final examination. Data from four courses taught by three different instructors showed very weak correlation between homework and quiz, …

Swept Wind Turbine Blade Aeroelastic Modeling For Loads And Dynamic Behavior, Scott M. Larwood, Mike Zutek Jun 2006

Swept Wind Turbine Blade Aeroelastic Modeling For Loads And Dynamic Behavior, Scott M. Larwood, Mike Zutek

All Faculty Presentations - School of Engineering and Computer Science

A dynamic modeling effort of a swept-blade wind turbine rotor has been conducted. The swept-blade concept was used for increased energy capture without an increase in the turbine loads. The work is part of a Department of Energy contract for increased wind energy capture at low-wind speed sites. The blade works by twisting to feather under aerodynamic loads at the outboard region. Conceptual design of the blade resulted in a 28 m blade radius for eventual testing on a normally 50 m diameter turbine. The blade was modeled with codes developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Comparisons were made …

Recruitment Of Bad By The Chlamydia Trachomatis Vacuole Correlates With Host-Cell Survival, Philippe Verbeke, Lynn Welter-Stahl, S. Ying, J. Hansen, Georg Hacker, Toni Darville, David M. Ojcius

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Chlamydiae replicate intracellularly in a vacuole called an inclusion. Chlamydial-infected host cells are protected from mitochondrion-dependent apoptosis, partly due to degradation of BH3-only proteins. The host-cell adapter protein 14-3-3β can interact with host-cell apoptotic signaling pathways in a phosphorylation-dependent manner. In Chlamydia trachomatis-infected cells, 14-3-3β co-localizes to the inclusion via direct interaction with a C. trachomatis-encoded inclusion membrane protein. We therefore explored the possibility that the phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) pathway may contribute to resistance of infected cells to apoptosis. We found that inhibition of PI3K renders C. trachomatis-infected cells sensitive to staurosporine-induced apoptosis, which is accompanied by mitochondrial cytochrome c …

Prophecy And Porneia In Shenoute's Letters: The Rhetoric Of Sexuality In A Late Antique Egyptian Monastery, Caroline T. Schroeder Apr 2006

Prophecy And Porneia In Shenoute's Letters: The Rhetoric Of Sexuality In A Late Antique Egyptian Monastery, Caroline T. Schroeder

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

The writer examines the apparently ubiquitous sexual references in the first surviving letters of Shenoute. Shenoute's references to sexuality constitute one aspect of his self-representation as his community's prophet. His textual performance as a prophet in these texts indicates that his sexual rhetoric served not only to condemn sexual activity among ascetics but also to help construct a relationship between God and the monastic community that is based on the relationship between God and the people in the Christian Old Testament. The sins of the monastery, as understood by Shenoute, like those of Israel or the nations in the prophetic …

Is Hollywood Good For Mathematics? (A Brief Discussion)., Christopher D. Goff Jan 2006

Is Hollywood Good For Mathematics? (A Brief Discussion)., Christopher D. Goff

College of the Pacific Faculty Presentations

Mathematics has played a role in many recent films, such as Good Will Hunting, A Beautiful Mind, and Proof. But how exactly is mathematics being portrayed? What ramifications does this portrayal have on our ”students,” broadly defined? In Good Will Hunting, mathematics is Will’s ticket out of his lower-class life and into a prestigious existence. In A Beautiful Mind, mathematical talent and schizophrenia are identified, at least in part. In Proof, mathematics not only links a daughter to her late father, but it also provides a backdrop for much of the story’s conflict. In this discussion, we will begin by …
