Extending Asterism Decoding To Qam And Its Complexity In Rician Fading Mimo Systems, P. Conder, Tadeusz A. Wysocki Dec 2004

Extending Asterism Decoding To Qam And Its Complexity In Rician Fading Mimo Systems, P. Conder, Tadeusz A. Wysocki

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The area of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) communications systems has received enormous attention recently as they can provide a roughly linear increase in data rate by using Multiple Transmit and Receive antennas. The optimal detection strategy for a MIMO receiver is to perform a Maximum-Likelihood (ML) search over all possible transmitted symbol combinations has an exponential complexity when the constellation size of number of transmit antennas increase. A number of sub-optimal decoders, such as VBLAST, provide linear decoding only where the number of receive antennas is at least equal to the number of transmit antennas . Asterism decoding proposed …

Load-Balanced Route Discovery For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Mehran Abolhasan, Justin Lipman, Tadeusz A. Wysocki Dec 2004

Load-Balanced Route Discovery For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Mehran Abolhasan, Justin Lipman, Tadeusz A. Wysocki

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents Flow-Aware Routing Protocol (FARP), a new routing strategy designed to improve load balancing and scalability in mobile ad hoc networks. FARP is a hop-by-hop routing protocol, which introduces a flow-aware route discovery strategy to reduce the number of control overheads propagating through the network and distributes the flow of data through least congested nodes to balance the network traffic. FARP was implemented in Glomosim and compared with AODV. To investigate the load distribution capability of FARP new performance metrics were introduced to measure the data packet flow distribution capability of the each routing protocol. The simulation results …

Observations On The Message Integrity Code In Ieee802.11wireless Lans, Jianyong Huang, Willy Susilo, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper surveys the security of the message integrity code used in the IEEE802.11 Wireless LANs. To address the security flaws of Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), the IEEE802.11i draft defines two data confidentiality and integrity protocols, Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) and Counter-Mode-CBC-MAC Protocol (CCMP). TKIP is based on RC4, andCCMP is based on the AES cipher. TKIP includes a keyed hash functions, called Michael, as the messag integrity code. The aim of this paper is to summarise the recent research results of Michael and analyse the practicability of two attacks against Michael.

Intranasal Vaccination With Streptococcal Fibronectin Binding Protein Sfb1 Fails To Prevent Growth And Dissemination Of Streptococcus Pyogenes In A Murine Skin Infection Model, Jason D. Mcarthur, E. Medina, J. Chin, B. J. Currie, K. S. Sriprakash, S. R. Talay, G. S. Chhatwal, Mark J. Walker

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Fibronectin binding protein F1 (Sfb1) of Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus [GAS]) is a well-characterized adhesin that has been shown to induce protection in mice against a lethal intranasal GAS challenge after intranasal immunization with cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) as adjuvant. With a murine skin infection model, we have shown that Sfb1/CTB vaccination neither elicits opsonizing antibodies nor prevents systemic bacterial growth and dissemination to internal organs after a subcutaneous GAS challenge. These results indicate that an Sfb1-based vaccine should be complemented with additional protective antigens in order to be used in areas such as the tropical north of …

A Study Of Umts Turbo Codes Across Space Time Spreading Channel With The Case Of M = 1 And M = 2, I. S. Raad, Peter James Vial, Tadeusz A. Wysocki

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The study presented in this paper is that of Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (UMTS) Turbo Codes across Space Time Spreading channel with one transmitter antenna, one receiver (m = 1) and two transmitter antennas and one receiver (m = 2) to see to what extent the bit error rate (BER) can be improved. Using the Max-log decoding algorithm and 12 iterations it is shown in the simulation results that an extra 5 dB is achievable.

Image Quality Assessment Using A Neural Network Approach, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, A. Havstad, A. Beghdadi Dec 2004

Image Quality Assessment Using A Neural Network Approach, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, A. Havstad, A. Beghdadi

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

In this paper, we propose a neural network approach to image quality assessment. In particular, the neural network measures the quality of an image by predicting the mean opinion score (MOS) of human observers, using a set of key features extracted from the original and test images. Experimental results, using 352 JPEG/JPEG2000 compressed images, show that the neural network outputs correlate highly with the MOS scores, and therefore, the neural network can easily serve as a correlate to subjective image quality assessment. Using 10-fold cross-validation, the predicted MOS values have a linear correlation coefficient of 0.9744, a Spearman ranked correlation …

Ontology Trend Analysis Of Dynamic Signals, David A. Stirling, P. Zulli Dec 2004

Ontology Trend Analysis Of Dynamic Signals, David A. Stirling, P. Zulli

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper describes a novel approach to analysing trends of a performance signal indicator from an industrial metallurgical reactor over a number of years of operation. Using a minimum message length algorithm, a detailed ontology of the signal behaviours or modalities was established. An abstraction of these yielded a number of related super states that in turn provided an insightful correspondence for the domain experts. Further detailed identification of the likely composition and causal influences contributing to each mode was subsequently induced with supervised learning.

Distributed Range Assignment For Reliable Channel Access And Reuse In Ad-Hoc Networks, G. Srivastava, P. Boustead, Joe F. Chicharo Dec 2004

Distributed Range Assignment For Reliable Channel Access And Reuse In Ad-Hoc Networks, G. Srivastava, P. Boustead, Joe F. Chicharo

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The available bandwidth in an ad-hoc network can decrease rapidly due to the shared access to the communication channel. Power control can enhance the available bandwidth by allowing non-interfering nodes to communicate simultaneously. A number of power aware topology control algorithms have been proposed, where low power transmissions are used to forward duta. However, evaluating the power level for the data packets is not sufficient. Reliable transmission of the data packets in a shared channel network requires a number of signalling messages at the Medium Access Channel (MAC) layer. The trmsmission power of the signalling messages is crucial for both …

Igniting Concern About Refugee Injustice, Sharon Callaghan, Brian Martin

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Injustice is a prominent theme in the news but there is far less attention to how to be effective in opposing it. For activists, it is crucial to understand how reactions against injustice can be ignited and/or inhibited. Injustice towards refugees provides a revealing case study.

Innovation-Export Linkages Within Different Cluster Models: A Case Study From The Australian Wine Industry , D. K. Aylward Dec 2004

Innovation-Export Linkages Within Different Cluster Models: A Case Study From The Australian Wine Industry , D. K. Aylward

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper examines innovation and export linkages within different levels of cluster development. The aim of the paper, using empirical data from the Australian wine industry, is to demonstrate that the association between innovation and export activity intensifies as the cluster develops. Dividing wine clusters into ‘innovative’ (highly developed) and ‘organised’ (less developed) models the paper uses selected core indicators of innovation and export activity to explore levels of integration within each model. This integration is examined in the context of Porter’s theory of ‘competitive advantage’, showing how these lessons can be translated to industry clusters in general.

Technological Disadvantage Of The Digital Age, N. F. Johnson Dec 2004

Technological Disadvantage Of The Digital Age, N. F. Johnson

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

Debates continue about the relative benefits, costs and risks of the diffusion of computer-based technologies throughout society and schooling. One area that has received considerable attention is gender equity. Early work on gender and computers focused on differences between male and female access and use (e.g. Huff, Fleming & Cooper, 1992; Kirkman, 1993; Morritt, 1997; Nelson & Cooper, 1997; Sofia, 1993), with concerns focused on the potential for girls to be disadvantaged. In some respects, it is arguable that problems of gender equity in schools with respect to computers have been overcome. For example, in a small study I conducted …

Accuracy Limitations Introduced By Digital Projection Sources In Profilometric Optical Metrology Systems, Matthew J. Baker, Joe F. Chicharo, Jiangtao Xi, Enbang Li

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The accuracy of profilometric optical metrology systems utilising Digital Fringe Projection (DFP) is analysed. An analytical model to describe theoretical accuracy limitation is derived and given as a function of object distance from the projector, projector resolution, projection angle and also object gradient. Associated limitations of the model are also discussed and analysed. The validity of the new model is demonstrated through practical experimentation.

Measuring Multiple Parameters In A Self-Mixing Optical Feedback System, Yanguang Yu, Jiangtao Xi, Enbang Li, Joe F. Chicharo, Thierry Bosch

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

We propose a new approach that yields the values of multiple parameters at the same time for self-mixing optical feedback interferometric systems. These parameters are the linewidth enhancement factor of Semiconductor Lasers, the optical feedback level factor as well as vibration information of a target including the frequency and the amplitude. The method is based on optical feedback interferometry. Its effectiveness has been confirmed by computer simulations and experiments.

Community Of Inquiry A Precondition Of Higher Learning In Online Journalism Courses, C. B. Borsoto

Asia Pacific Media Educator

This study explores the indicators of a community of inquiry present in the asynchronous computer conferences of three MA (Journalism) online courses offered at the Ateneo de Manila University. The Community of Inquiry Model, developed by Archer, Garrison, Anderson, and Rourke (2001), from the University of Calgary in Canada, illustrates how three elements – social presence, cognitive presence, and teaching presence – combine to create a community of inquiry, which is a precondition for higher learning. In the courses analyzed, where students were generally satisfied, a community of inquiry was created. Occurrences of social, cognitive, and teaching presence in the …

We've Come A Long Way, Or Have We? American Research On Asian Mass Communication, J. A. Lent

Asia Pacific Media Educator

About this time 40 years ago, I was in the Philippines, beginning my career as a researcher of mass communication in Asia. In preparation for that trip, I recall, I scoured the many historical, social-economic, political surveys of Asia at Syracuse University, which had an excellent collection of books on Asia. If there was a mention of media in those volumes, and there usually was not, it was only a sentence or two on how a newspaper reported an event. My search of the journalism/mass communication periodicals yielded very little as well. I’m rather sure that had I attended Asian …

Satellite Imagery In Media Representation Of Global Conflicts, M. Jones Dec 2004

Satellite Imagery In Media Representation Of Global Conflicts, M. Jones

Asia Pacific Media Educator

Media organizations relied on commercial civilian “spy satellites” to survey the battlefields and movement of troops during the 2003 Iraq War. Satellite photographs were also used to report the impounding of an American surveillance aircraft on Hainan Island in China, the September 11 terrorist strike, the blackout in New York city, the Black Christmas bushfires in Australia, and the war in Afghanistan. The implications of the technology on accurate and fair reporting of international conflicts in countries inaccessible by journalists, such as North Korea, Iran, Russia and China, is thus worthy of critical examination. This preliminary research, geared for completion …

Experience Based Reasoning For Recognising Fraud And Deception, Zhaohao Sun, G. Finnie Dec 2004

Experience Based Reasoning For Recognising Fraud And Deception, Zhaohao Sun, G. Finnie

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Fraud, deception and their recognition have received increasing attention in multiagent systems (MAS), e-commerce, and agent societies. However, little attention has been given to the theoretical foundation for fraud and deception from a logical viewpoint. We fill this gap by arguing that experience-based reasoning (EBR) is a logical foundation for recognizing fraud and deception. It provides a logical analysis of deception, which classifies recognition of deception into knowledge-based deception recognition, inference-based deception recognition, and hybrid deception recognition. It will examine the relationship between EBR and fraud as well as deception. It uses EBR to recognize fraud and deception in e-commerce …

The continuing economic and political transformation of Asian countries has been inexorable since the mid-1980s. John A. Lent, a long-time Asian media observer, stated: “Today, Asians are generally more politically vigilant and less apt to tolerate strongman rule than before.”1 A good illustration of democratic transitions in Asia is the expansion of political rights and civil liberties. Freedom of the press has continually increased in many parts of Asia. Freedom House’s survey of press freedom reported in 2003: “The Asia Pacific region … exhibited a relatively high level of press freedom, with 18 countries (46 percent) rated Free, 7 …

Public Journalism: Moving The Youth Agenda Forward, L. Petralia

Asia Pacific Media Educator

This paper seeks to reignite the debate about public journalism as a panacea for citizen disengagement from public life and the diminishing relevance of traditional news media. It argues that public journalism is both an attitude and a set of professional practices requiring incorporation into newsroom routines in order for community engagement to occur. The paper revisits the Public Journalism, Public Participation and Australian Public Policy Project conducted in 1998. It does this to complete the project’s examination of how public journalism practice might be reflected in the routines of New South Wales regional newspapers, specifically to enhance the access …
