Design-Based Research And The Learning Designer, Deidre Seeto, Janice A. Herrington Jan 2006

Design-Based Research And The Learning Designer, Deidre Seeto, Janice A. Herrington

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

The role of the learning designer has expanded from the commonly known activities of an instructional designer to incorporate a range of new roles, largely prompted by new technologies. In this paper, we articulate an approach that further extends the role of the learning designer to encompass evaluation and design-based research, in collaboration with the subject matter expert. Such collaboration is professionally enhancing for both parties, and adds to the sum of knowledge on the effective design of learning environments, by documenting and disseminating the learning design process.

The Use Of A Visual Learning Design Representation To Document And Communicate Teaching Ideas, Shirley Agostinho Jan 2006

The Use Of A Visual Learning Design Representation To Document And Communicate Teaching Ideas, Shirley Agostinho

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

A learning design is a representation of teaching and learning practice documented in some notational form so that it can serve as a model or template adaptable by a teacher to suit his/her context. This paper presents a work-in-progress of a research study that is examining how a learning design representation developed in an Australian federally funded project known as the Learning Designs project (www.learningdesigns.uow.edu.au) is being used. Eleven participants were interviewed to investigate how they are using the learning design representation and how such a representation could be improved. Preliminary findings indicate that the visual characteristic of this learning …

The Design And Analysis Of Multi-Phase Plant Breeding Experiments, A B. Smith, P Lim, Brian R. Cullis Jan 2006

The Design And Analysis Of Multi-Phase Plant Breeding Experiments, A B. Smith, P Lim, Brian R. Cullis

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Despite the importance of selection for quality characteristics in plant improvement programmes, literature on experimental design and statistical analysis for these traits is scarce. Most quality traits are obtained from multi-phase experiments in which plant varieties are first grown in a field trial then further processed in the laboratory. In the present paper a general mixed model approach for the analysis of multi-phase data is described, with particular emphasis on quality trait data that are often highly unbalanced and involve substantial sources of non-genetic variation and correlation. Also detailed is a new approach for experimental design that employs partial replication …

A Robust Design Procedure For Improvement Of Quality Of Lower-Limb Prosthesis, Nian-Zhong Chen, Winson Lee, Ming Zhang Jan 2006

A Robust Design Procedure For Improvement Of Quality Of Lower-Limb Prosthesis, Nian-Zhong Chen, Winson Lee, Ming Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Lower-limb prostheses are used to restore amputee's walking. Monolimb is one of the designs referring to socket and the shank being molded into one piece of thermoplastic material. Appropriate shank flexibility of a monolimb can improve gait of an amputee. However, during the fabrication, the variations of design variables are inevitably produced which may lead the unexpected shank deflection and directly influence on gait efficiency of an amputee. This paper presents a robust design procedure for improvement of quality of the monolimb by simultaneously minimizing performance variations caused by variations in design variables and bringing the mean value of performance …

On The Design Of Early Generation Variety Trials With Correlated Data, Brian R. Cullis, A B. Smith, N. E. Coombes Jan 2006

On The Design Of Early Generation Variety Trials With Correlated Data, Brian R. Cullis, A B. Smith, N. E. Coombes

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This article considers the design of early generation variety trials with a prespecified spatial correlation structure and introduces a new class of partially replicated designs called p-rep designs in which the plots of standard varieties are replaced by additional plots of test lines. We show how efficient p-rep designs can be readily generated using the modified Reactive TABU search algorithm. The expected and realized genetic gain of p-rep and grid plot designs is compared in a simulation study.

Strategic Design Of Service Orientated Web-Based Supply Chain Infrastructure, Leone J. Dunn, Peter R. Gibson Jan 2006

Strategic Design Of Service Orientated Web-Based Supply Chain Infrastructure, Leone J. Dunn, Peter R. Gibson

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The traditional 'make and sell' attitude of industrial manufacturing organisations has now almost entirely given way to customer orientated 'sense and respond' service philosophies to the extent where this has become a major competitive key success factor in a global manufacturing industry. In order to become service orientated, manufacturing industry is increasingly dependent on efficient and effective supply relationships. This trend is compounded by needs for waste avoidance, minimal inventory, cost efficiency and appropriate service to the customer. This paper considers the strategic opportunities for large engineering project firms that have identified a need to establish advantages over their competitors …

A Technology-Enhanced Multiliteracies Learning Design For Geography Education, Lori Lockyer, Barry Harper Jan 2006

A Technology-Enhanced Multiliteracies Learning Design For Geography Education, Lori Lockyer, Barry Harper

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

Educators are being challenged to prepare students to effectively participate in our increasingly globalised society. Contemporary views of pedagogy suggest supporting learners by providing scaffolds for their engagement in real world tasks - tasks that provide opportunities to both explore and apply their learning through multi-modal expressions' within their diverse contexts. This article describes a project that draws upon the emerging views of multiliteracies in the design of a K-12 education excursion program. The multiliteracies learning design developed for .the program is applied to specific discipline-focused learning objectives and implemented within a technology-enhanced environment, which provides learners with access to …

Developing Familiarity With Learning Design Tools Through Subject Analysis, Christine A. Brown Jan 2006

Developing Familiarity With Learning Design Tools Through Subject Analysis, Christine A. Brown

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The application of quality processes to tertiary teaching can result in a more team-based approach to course curriculum planning, the instructional design of individual subjects or units, the learning support associated with subject implementation and subsequent evaluation. The "art" of teaching requires more explicit communication within and across different teams that may be involved in each stage. Learning designs provide tools for design teams to map out learning environment attributes such as resources, tasks, people and interactions. Experienced teaching academics, unfamiliar with such tools, require orientation to them to achieve their communication potential. One way to introduce learning design models …

Identifying Authentic Mobile Learning In Teacher Education: A Design-Based Approach, Anthony J. Herrington, Janice A. Herrington Jan 2006

Identifying Authentic Mobile Learning In Teacher Education: A Design-Based Approach, Anthony J. Herrington, Janice A. Herrington

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

The adoption of mobile technologies in higher education has been variable and inconsistent across the sector. Little is known about how people learn best from mobile devices such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants and portable digital audio players, and yet these are the technologies of choice of a generation of young adults who are proficient and competent in their use. This paper describes a project to explore, implement and document pedagogies that go beyond the use of mobile technologies for information delivery and communication. It describes a design-based approach to researching the use of mobile devices as cognitive tools …
