Student Perception Of Study At International Branch Campuses: Implication For Educators And College Managers, Stephen Wilkins, Melodena Stephens Balakrishnan

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

It is widely accepted that in any service industry it is the customer who defines service quality, so it is logical for researchers and practitioners to research the customer perspective. The international branch campus has emerged as a popular form of transnational higher education but to date little research has been undertaken on student attitudes, beliefs and experiences, other than the student feedback evaluations conducted by institutions. This quantitative study employed a survey questionnaire to investigate student perceptions of study at international branch campuses in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the country which hosts the largest number of branch campuses …

Technology Use Takes A Boost Among University Students, Zeenath Reza Khan Jan 2012

Technology Use Takes A Boost Among University Students, Zeenath Reza Khan

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

The speed with which the information technology has evolved is unparallel to any other technological evolution man has ever witnessed. From hospitals to classrooms, technology seems to have taken over people's lives. Where there have been studies to see the impact of technology in varying aspects of life, there seem to be little or no studies on the actual rate of increase in usage of e-technologies among university students and why they have become so popular. This paper uses a survey tool that captures responses from 900 students to study the rate of increase in student use of various e-technologies …

Identification Vs. Self-Verification In Virtual Communities (Vc): Theoretical Gaps And Design Implications, Kathy Ning Shen

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

Identity-related processes have been identified as important in explaining virtual community (VC) member behavior as well as informing system design of VCs. In particular, the two distinct identity processes of self-verification and identification have been identified and investigated separately, portrayed as two distinctive or contradictory identity processes with different practical implications. This chapter compares and reconciles these two theoretical perspectives in explaining VC participation. Based on a critical and comprehensive review of prior literature, the author identifies three major theoretical gaps that suggest how VC research and management can be advanced through an identity perspective. Finally, the chapter is concluded …

The Corporate Strategy Of Dubai Duty Free, Prakash Vel, Bernard Creed, Roshni S. Narayan

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

The business arena is abundant with myriad organizations offering a wide variety of products and services. But only those organizations that are able to function successfully in the marketplace are able to survive and subsequently evolve. For an organization's performance to be determined as successful, the metrics of the organization prove to be vital indicators. Some commonly used metrics to measure organizational success are total sales and revenue, total assets held, employees training expense, attrition rate, investment in IT, market share, awards and recognition received, press/media mentions, CSR campaigns etc (Finney and Corbett, 2007; Liebowitz and Suen, 2000; Self, 2004). …

Mobilizing In Different Political Opportunity Structures The Cases Of French And British Muslims, Imene Ajala

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

I ssues related to Islam in the European sphere have increasingly been at the forefront of public spaces and part of decision makers' agendas. According to the European Union (EU) Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia, the EU includes at least 13 million Muslims, representing 5 percent of Europeans.1 For Jocelyne Césari, "Muslim immigration to Europe and North America can be seen as the foundational moment for a new transcultural space-a space where individuals live and experience different cultural references and values that are now disconnected from national contexts and boundaries."2 Such a transcultural space is characterized by the forceful …

The objective of this paper is to investigate Supply Chain Management (SCM) performance of selected companies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) countries upon successful implementation of Information Technology (IT) applications. By carrying out an in-depth qualitative analysis, the paper seeks to evaluate how IT can enhance the SCM performance from a practitioner perspective. The survey results have indicated that respondents are aware that adopting IT does not necessarily translate to immediate benefits. Companies in UAE will, therefore, need to ‘educate’ their senior managers on using IT systems to streamline their supply chain operations, reduce cycle time and improve supply …

Global: Are Branch Campuses Serving Students Well?, Stephen Wilkins, Melodena Stephens Balakrishnan Jan 2012

Global: Are Branch Campuses Serving Students Well?, Stephen Wilkins, Melodena Stephens Balakrishnan

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

The academic literature and professional journals both reveal no shortage of criticisms of the international branch campus. Yet each year more branches are established around the world, and existing campuses continue to expand. So it seems that there must be a demand for these campuses. But how well are they actually serving students? It is interesting that the growth of student numbers at international branch campuses does not seem to have affected enrolments at the home campuses of Western universities. This implies that branch campuses have found a new, additional demand for higher education.

A 4-Node Coverage Approach To The Localization Problem In Uwsns, Mohamed K. Watfa

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

Wireless sensor networks have emerged as a fast-growing technology that has enabled us to monitor physical and environmental states. As of yet these valuable sensor networks have been bound to terrestrial terrains; however, seventy percent of the Earth's surface is covered by enormous bodies of water: oceans, seas and rivers. Most of this territory remains unchartered, and this primarily gave a rise to the implementation of these sensor networks underwater. In this paper, we present a new technique for localizing an event of interest in an underwater environment monitored by an underwater sensor network. We reduce the localization problem to …

Query Expansion Based-On Similarity Of Terms For Improving Arabic Information Retrieval, Khaled Shaalan, Sinan Al-Sheikh, Farhad Oroumchian

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

This research suggests a method for query expansion on Arabic Information Retrieval using Expectation Maximization (EM). We employ the EM algorithm in the process of selecting relevant terms for expanding the query and weeding out the non-related terms. We tested our algorithm on INFILE test collection of CLLEF2009, and the experiments show that query expansion that considers similarity of terms both improves precision and retrieves more relevant documents. The main finding of this research is that we can increase the recall while keeping the precision at the same level by this method.

Adoption Of Mobile Commerce: A Confidence Model, Mohamed Khalifa, Sammi K. N Cheng, Kathy Ning Shen

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

This study was driven by three underlying motivations. One of them is the gap between high penetration rate of mobile phone and relatively low adoption rate of m-commerce. The second is to reconcile the inconsistent findings in prior IT adoption research regarding the consistency of the relationship between attitude and intention. Finally, we hope to provide the theoretical underpinning for various interventions to promote m-commerce adoption. In this study, we extended the theory of planned behavior (TPB) by integrating confidence as a moderator for the relationship between attitude and intention. Furthermore, trial, communication and observation are identified as the sources …

A Market Risk Model For Asymmetric Distributed Series Of Return, Kostas Giannopoulos, Ramzi Nekhili

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

In this paper we propose to model short-term interest rates by taking into consideration both the asymmetric properties of returns, using Pearson’s type IV distribution, and the time-varying volatility, using GARCH models. We show that conditional skewness is negatively related to spot price interest rates and that negative conditional skewness can lead the process to generate steady returns.

A stage by stage analysis is made comparing with existing academic models on brand development, including the models of de Chernatony, Logman and Kapferer, and a revised model is …

Protective Capital And Poverty Traps, Ali Saedvandi Jan 2012

Protective Capital And Poverty Traps, Ali Saedvandi

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

We investigate a protective role for capital and the implications on poverty reduction policies. Within the framework of an overlapping generations model, the accumulation of tax-funded 'protective capital' increases the survival probability of productive capital from disastrous events. Key findings highlight how a low survival probability of capital can stimulate a shift to higher or lower early consumption, which might result in escapable or inescapable traps. The model explains that injection of capital can be ineffective if the required level of protection has not been attained. We show how higher TFP assists wage tax system to escape from traps.
