Curriculum Based Information Literacy Skills For First Year Undergraduate Students, Lynne Wright, Catriona Mcgurk

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

This case study centres on the information literacy program for first year undergraduate students at the University of Wollongong Library. The university has one central library servicing an eftsu student population of approximately 9,100. In 1995, 3,000 of these are commencing undergraduates. In global terms this is a small university and, mainly due to physical restrictions of~e campus, it is not predicted to grow above 10,700 eftsu by the year 2000. Therefore, the impact of student numbers on the provision of service will not dramatically change in the near future. The library has always provided bibliographic instruction, either basic orientation …

Australian Aboriginal Dreaming Stories: A Chronological Bibliography Of Published Works 1789-1991, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The bibliography lists published works relating to Aboriginal stories which have been labelled by non-Aboriginal Australians with a variety of terms: myths or mythology, legends, fairy tales, superstitions, fables, traditions, stories, dreamtime stories, narratives or even ghost stories. Preference is now given to the use of the term ‘dreaming stories’. For a discussion of the various definitions and classifications of such material by Australian anthropologists and ethnologists refer Hiatt (1975). Interpretation by local and overseas researchers and academics has not been addressed in detail within this bibliography as such a topic covers a vast field, but some such items have …

A Conspiracy Of Silence - The Nsw National Parks And Wildlife Service And Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Sites, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service (NP&WS), under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 (NSW) ('the Act'), is responsible for the 'care, control. and management' of Aboriginal cultural hentage sites (middens, burial sites, rock art sites, etc.) throughout NSW.2 Section 90 of the Act states that it is an offence to destroy, deface or disturb an Aboriginal site, and that consent to do so must be sought from the Director of the Service. It is questionable not only whether it is appropriate that the Service should wield such power, but also if it is adequately carrying …

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The writer of this story was born in Illawarra over 76 years ago [c1857], and during his childhood and youth he shared in the experiences and struggles of the pioneer settlers in that rich and beautiful portion of the State. In this story he has attempted to give a detailed account of the manner in which the Crown Lands of Illawarra were disposed of, for the information of all who are interested in matters pertaining to Illawarra, and, more particularly, the large body of farmers now occupying those lands, many of whom are descendants of the pioneers who came from …

In January 1839 a young Scottish couple – Dr. Robert Menzies and his recent bride Margaret (nee Tindell) - arrived in Sydney aboard the Earl Durham. Like so many other free immigrants of the time, they had journeyed to New South Wales with the intention of settling on a farm and making a future for themselves and their family there. They had high hopes of perhaps even acquiring a small fortune within a decade or so, selling up at a profit, and retiring to their beloved family and friends back home in Scotland. However, such was not to be …

Arthur Cousins 1866-1960, Michael K. Organ Jan 1994

Arthur Cousins 1866-1960, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

He was that "rara avis" in Australian historiography, the devoted local historian who has a realisation of the broader implications of regional development. So wrote Sydney University Archivist D.S. Macmillan in an obituary notice published in the October 1960 number of the Union Recorder, commemorating the death of Arthur Cousins on Wednesday, 17 August, at his Cremone residence, aged 94 years. Though having known him for only a brief period at the end of a long life, Macmillan had developed a degree of admiration and respect for this elderly gentleman, who, along with G.E. Hall and others, had worked towards …

Conrad Martens : Journal Of A Voyage From England To Australia Aboard Hms Beagle And Hms Hyacinth 1833-35, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Conrad Martens (1801-78) is widely regarded as Australia's foremost watercolourist of the colonial period, having produced a large body of work whilst resident in New South Wales between 1835-78. His journal of a voyage from England to Australia during 1833-35 aboard HMS Beagle with Charles Darwin and HMS Hyacinth was for a long period catalogued as an `Anonymous Journal of a Voyage on board H.M.S. Hyacinth' in the collection of the Mitchell Library, Sydney (ML A429). However in 1993 it was identified as by Conrad Martens. This was a significant find as it also contained an account of Martens' time …

Illawarra And South Coast Aborigines 1770-1900, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The following compilation of historical manuscript and published material relating to the Illawarra and South Coast Aborigines for the approximate period 1770 to 1900 aims to supplement that contained in the author's Illawarra and South Coast Aborigines 1770- 1850 (Wollongong University, 1990). The latter was compiled in a relatively short 18 month period between 1988 and 1989, and since then a great deal of new material has been discovered, with more undoubtedly yet to be unearthed of relevance to this study. As a result the present document contains material of a similar nature to that in the 1990 work, with …

New Age Cooperation: The Effect Of Technology On Library Cooperation, John Shipp, Neil Cairns Jan 1992

New Age Cooperation: The Effect Of Technology On Library Cooperation, John Shipp, Neil Cairns

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Novel and aggressive attitudes toward cooperation will need to accompany the development of information technologies if libraries are to maintain a central role in the information environment. Existing cooperative mechanisms must be expanded by the establishment of international strategic alliances with publishers, database producers, software developers and hardware suppliers. In particular, Australian librarians need to re-assess their involvement in scholarly publishing and develop strategies which meet the challenges posed by emergent communication and storage technologies.

W.B. Clarke As Scientific Journalist, Michael K. Organ Jan 1992

W.B. Clarke As Scientific Journalist, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

This paper comments on W.B. Clarke's role as a scientific journalist in Sydney, 1839-1878. It also argues that Clarke has been misrepresented over time because large sections of his published work - specifically anonymous and signed newspaper articles - have not been considered in analyses of his life and assessments of his place in the history of Australian science.

The Ghost Of Ghost Creek, Wollongong, Michael Organ Jan 1991

The Ghost Of Ghost Creek, Wollongong, Michael Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Every town has its tales of ghosts. Campbelltown has the famous Fishers Ghost and Wollongong is no exception, even to the point of having a ghost Creek, located at the Western end of Crown Street, near its junction with the Mt Keira Road and the expressway. Unfortunately much of the creek and its associated wooden and stone bridge dating from the 1830's is buried beneath the major roadworks in that area. The adjacent photo is all that is left to remind us of what the original Ghost Creek and bridge looked like. But why Ghost Creek? The answer takes us …

Clarke, Coal And Controversy: The Traumas Of Reverend W.B. Clarke In His Defence Of Australian Geology During The Nineteenth Century, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

[Extract] Though readily given the title Father of Australian geology , the Reverend W.B. Clarke remains something of a mysterious figure to Australian geologists. When asked what his major achievements were, few would be able to offer an answer. Yet such disregard is commonly the fate of many pioneers in the field of science, for once a discovery is made, or theory proven, the profession moves on to new and more challenging fields, with scant regard for the foundations upon which current work is based.... William Branwhite Clarke (1798-1878) was a pioneer in the field of Australian science who, though …

Cd Rom And Access To Information In Academic Libraries, Carole Alcock Jan 1990

Cd Rom And Access To Information In Academic Libraries, Carole Alcock

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

CD-Rom databases have been hailed as a means of avoiding the problems inherent in budgeting for online services, and hence also the need to charge for searching. However, some libraries are already considering charging for their use. This is a retrograde step. The University of Wollongong library has purchased a number of CD-ROM databases which have been enthusiastically received by both students and academic staff. At present, we do not charge for this service. Initial indications are that the introduction of CD-Rom databases has meant a slump in demand for online searches. Clearly, CD-Rom and online services could be complementary, …

The databases are available for use by all students and staff, and their use is continuing to be evaluated. The introduction of the CD··ROM service has had significant implications for library users and staff, e. g . the number of online searches has reduced, the use of serial literature has increased, the use of hard copy indexes has changed and staff involvement in the training …

Bibliographic Notes On Captain R.M. Westmacott's "Sketches In Australia", Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

During my investigations into the life and times of Robert Marsh Westmacott (Aide-de-Camp to Governor Bourke from 1832 to 1837; artist and settler in Illawarra from 1837 to 1847), a somewhat mysterious figure like so many of our early colonial artists, I have encountered a number of variations of his published collection of eighteen tinted lithographs plus descriptive text, entitled Sketches in Australia. The question arose: is the work a true 'book' or merely a collection of lithographs? The bibliographic details for this work are described by Ferguson, 4955. However my studies have revealed a number of important variations of …

Pioneers Of The Illawarra - A History Of The Family Of Elias Organ In Wollongong, 1839-1869, Michael K. Organ, Robert Hardy

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

This history deals with the life and times of members of the Organ family who settled in the Illawarra region in 1839. The account is based on official government records and newspaper accounts. Unlike other such histories no core of personal memorabilia including letters, documents or artifacts survives, upon which a more personal account can be constructed. Some personal reminiscences dictated by members of the family in the 1920s and '30s have been used, however they are sketchy and were only used to indicate a line of research. This detailed study focuses on the circumstances of the Organ family during …
