Pedagogy And Materials For Teaching Piano To Children In China And The United States, Linxi Yang
Pedagogy And Materials For Teaching Piano To Children In China And The United States, Linxi Yang
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study compared the pedagogical teaching practices and piano materials used by five Chinese and two U.S. piano teachers. The teacher interviews were conducted in China and the United States based on semi-structured questions and then transcribed, translated as needed and interpreted for common themes. Interviews revealed details about specific pedagogical practices that are different based on the age of piano students, individual teacher ideas about selection of materials, and the impact of developing relationships and motivation for students. The piano materials revealed a lack of different material in the books published in the United States and China. The …
Hyperspectral Tomographic Ftir Imaging Using Two Illumination Geometries For Polymer Phantoms, Zahrasadat Alavi
Hyperspectral Tomographic Ftir Imaging Using Two Illumination Geometries For Polymer Phantoms, Zahrasadat Alavi
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to carry out non-destructive 3D imaging by applying Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectro-microtomographic techniques, and develop corresponding methods of data analysis. This is done by collecting 3D synchrotron-based and lab-based (Thermal) FTIR hyper spectral data at the Synchrotron Radiation Center (SRC) for the first time. Despite other 2D imaging techniques, this does not manipulate the sample, and suppresses the need to microtome 3D biological, material or biomedical samples into slices to study by spectroscopic imaging techniques. Spectro-micro-tomography is applicable for scientific, industrial, energy, biomedical samples such as stem cell characterization and materials such as …
Applications Of Microbial Desalination And Photocatalytic Disinfection For The Removal Of Contaminants In Drinking Water, Kristen Shirlee-Ann Brastad
Applications Of Microbial Desalination And Photocatalytic Disinfection For The Removal Of Contaminants In Drinking Water, Kristen Shirlee-Ann Brastad
Theses and Dissertations
Trends in drinking water treatment in recent years have been moving toward the use of membrane separation in order to reduce contaminants in water. There are many forms of membrane separation technology such as ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and extruded ion exchange membranes. These membranes have many different applications and may be used to remove many materials from water such as salts, viruses and bacteria, selectively remove cations or anions, or remove organics.
Microbial desalination cells (MDCs) are an emerging concept which use bioelectric potential produced from organics via microbial metabolism to accomplish desalination. MDCs consist of three compartments, …
Topics In Broadband Gravitational-Wave Astronomy, Sydney Joanne Chamberlin
Topics In Broadband Gravitational-Wave Astronomy, Sydney Joanne Chamberlin
Theses and Dissertations
The direct detection of gravitational waves promises to open a new observational window onto the universe, and a number of large scale efforts are underway worldwide to make such a detection a reality. In this work, we attack some of the current problems in gravitational-wave detection over a wide range of frequencies.
In the first part of this work, low frequency gravitational-wave detection is considered using pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). PTAs are a promising tool for probing the universe through gravitational radiation. Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), cosmic strings, relic gravitational waves from inflation, and first order phase transitions in …
Gender As An 'Interplay Of Rules': Detecting Epistemic Interplay Of Medical And Legal Discourse With Sex And Gender Classification In Four Editions Of The Dewey Decimal Classification, Melodie J. Fox
Theses and Dissertations
When groups of people are represented in classification systems, potential exists for them to be structurally or linguistically subordinated, erased or otherwise misrepresented (Olson & Schlegl, 2001). As Bowker & Star (1999) have shown, the real-world application of classification to people can have legal, economic, medical, social, and educational consequences. The purpose of this research is to contribute to knowledge organization by showing how the epistemological stance underlying specific classificatory discourses interactively participates in the formation of concepts. The medical and legal discourses in three timeframes are examined using Foucauldian genealogical discourse analysis to investigate how their depictions of gender …
Everyday Workplace Ethics For The Millennial Business And Engineering Undergraduate Student: A Situated Learning Model, Nisha Kumar
Theses and Dissertations
Undergraduate ethics instruction in business and engineering can be broadly divided into two models – disciplinary ethics (integrated within a course where discussions about ethics pertain to a particular profession or discipline) and standalone ethics (where the concept of ethics and ethical conduct are discussed in broad, theoretical terms). While both these models have educational value, they have not been able to help the millennial undergraduate student with everyday routine ethical decision making that they might encounter in the workplace. This is largely because both these models do not consider the organizational or the cultural context (the context in which …
Maximizing The Effects Of Passive Training On Visuomotor Adaptation By Incorporating Other Motor Learning Strategies, Yuming Lei
Theses and Dissertations
Passive training has been shown to be an effective rehabilitation approach for stroke survivors, especially for those who suffer from severe control loss or complete paralysis. However, the effectiveness of the treatments that utilize passive assist training is still low. The goal of this dissertation was to develop a training condition that can maximize the effects of passive training on motor learning by combining its effect with other motor learning strategies. To achieve this goal, two specific aims were pursued: one aim was to determine the effects of passive training on learning a visuomotor adaptation task; and the other aim …
Becoming "A Good Wife, A Good Mother, And A Good Woman": The Experiences Of Six Non-Literate Rural Ghanaian Women, Mary Assumpta Ayikue
Becoming "A Good Wife, A Good Mother, And A Good Woman": The Experiences Of Six Non-Literate Rural Ghanaian Women, Mary Assumpta Ayikue
Theses and Dissertations
The topic of women's literacy is prominent, current issue throughout the world. In the villages of Ghana, west Africa, most women have not experienced a basic elementary education. Although Ghana has free and compulsory education, several factors influence a woman's ability to pursue formal educational learning. According to the 2008 statistics of UNICEF (2011), regarding the literacy rate of adult women in Ghana (females age 15 and above), 59.30% remain illiterate while the rate of illiterate men (males 15 age and above) is 19.4%. Most households in the rural areas of Ghana do not recognize the importance of literacy education …
