The Decoding Of Facial Expressions And Its Relationship To Compliance Behavior In Boys Characterized As Externalizers., Diane J. Zanier Jan 1991

The Decoding Of Facial Expressions And Its Relationship To Compliance Behavior In Boys Characterized As Externalizers., Diane J. Zanier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The interest in the present study was on examining the relationship between affective decoding and maladaptive behavior patterns in the classroom. Six- and ten-year-old externalizing boys and controls (classified using the Teacher's Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist; Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1986) were compared on their ability to decode nonverbal signals of emotion as measured by the DANVA (Diagnostic Analysis of Nonverbal Accuracy Scale; Nowicki & Duke, 1989). Subjects were also compared on their interpretations of various facial expressions (happy, angry, neutral) depicted by a "teacher" to examine whether interpreting anger/hostility by such boys is related to: (1) their …

The Psychological Effects Of Parental Pressure To Achieve On Children., Anne. Robinson Jan 1991

The Psychological Effects Of Parental Pressure To Achieve On Children., Anne. Robinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There seems to be a trend toward a new type of childrearing in which parents push their children to achieve. The psychological effects of parental pressure, however, have been virtually ignored by researchers. The present study examined children's responses to parent pressure. This phenomenon was explored in the context of a model, which traced the influences of SES and sex of a child on parent expectations, through to the perception of these expectations on the child's psychological functioning. One hundred and eighteen families (children enrolled in sixth through eighth grade and their parents) participated in the study. Questionnaires assessing expectations …

The Systematic Distortion Hypothesis And Diagnostically Meaningful Student Ratings Of University Instructor Teaching Effectiveness., Adam C. Lodzinski Jan 1991

The Systematic Distortion Hypothesis And Diagnostically Meaningful Student Ratings Of University Instructor Teaching Effectiveness., Adam C. Lodzinski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a series of four studies using data from a longitudinal investigation and a clinic database, the neuropsychological characteristics of normal and disabled reader groups were compared and contrasted and the predictive validity of 5 neuropsychological factors in determining later reading achievement was investigated. As expected, the performance of the disabled reader groups was significantly below that of the normal reader group; however, differences between the school and clinic samples of disabled readers were also observed. Disabled readers in the clinic sample were more impaired, overall, than either the normal or disabled readers from the school sample. The best predictor …

Program Evaluation Utilization In Canada And Its Relationship To Evaluation Process, Evaluator And Decision Context Variables., Michael Patrick. Shea Jan 1991

Program Evaluation Utilization In Canada And Its Relationship To Evaluation Process, Evaluator And Decision Context Variables., Michael Patrick. Shea

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Data on the extent and type of program evaluation utilization in a sample of recent Canadian program evaluations were analyzed and then assessed with the characteristics of the evaluation processes employed, the evaluators who conducted the evaluations and the decision contexts in which the evaluations were performed. Surveys were mailed to all members of the Canadian Evaluation Society (CES) and the Program Evaluation Section of the Canadian Psychological Association (PES-CPA) during the fall of 1988. These individuals were followed up using procedures prescribed by Dillman (1978) resulting in a response rate of 68%. Additional data were obtained by mailing surveys …

Stress And Satisfaction In Nurses: Perfectionism And Self-Efficacy As Moderating Variables., Sean P. O'Brien Jan 1991

Stress And Satisfaction In Nurses: Perfectionism And Self-Efficacy As Moderating Variables., Sean P. O'Brien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The results provide support for the validity of the perfectionism and self-efficacy constructs, since higher levels of socially-prescribed and other-oriented perfectionism, as well as lower levels of self-efficacy, predicted levels of satisfaction in nurses. There was mixed support for the hypothesis that a higher number of job stressors would be related to levels of satisfaction, since significant negative correlations were only obtained between the number of stressors and job satisfaction scores. Overall, the best predictors of job and life satisfaction were likelihood of remaining a nurse, and socially-prescribed perfectionism, respectively. In addition, subjective analyses indicate nurses are most concerned about: …

Analysis Of The Peer Review Process In Neuropsychological Journals., Peter J. Wass Jan 1991

Analysis Of The Peer Review Process In Neuropsychological Journals., Peter J. Wass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present investigation was to study the peer review process in the Journal of Clinical Neuropsychology/Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology (JCN/JCEN). Interrater reliability between two independent reviewers regarding the decision of whether or not a manuscript should be published was analyzed, as well as the rates of agreement between the reviewer's recommendations and the final editorial decision. Reviewer reliability on the recommendation for publication fell within the low range for acceptable intraclass correlation coefficient values. Reviewers agreed more often on the recommendation to reject a manuscript than on the decision to accept a manuscript. The editors …

Navigation In Electronic Space: Users' Learning Strategies Of Word Processing., Lisa Chen Jan 1991

Navigation In Electronic Space: Users' Learning Strategies Of Word Processing., Lisa Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In communication research, there has been a lack of studies that investigated how people interact with technologies. As technologies become more complex, the issue of usage must also be addressed. Twenty-eight secretaries and support staff were given a word processing test to assess their level of proficiency. Out of this group, four novice and six advanced users were selected for non-directive interviewing. The study found that advanced and novice users shared very different thought worlds about word processing. Additionally, it was found that there were novices who displayed characteristics of advanced users and there were novices who tended to learn …

Justice Within Organizations: Perceptions Of Family Support Programs., Victoria L. Macfarlane Jan 1991

Justice Within Organizations: Perceptions Of Family Support Programs., Victoria L. Macfarlane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The implementation of workplace family support programs such as on-site child care and flexible work arrangements, represents an important step toward acknowledging the increasing numbers of women and mothers of young children within the work force. Nonetheless, work organizations have been slow to adopt these programs. Managers have expressed the fear that some employees will view family support programs as unfair (Fernandez, 1986). The present study addressed how employees conceptualize the justice of family support. A scale designed to measure the perceived importance of six justice rules--equity, equality, need, equality of opportunity, profit maximization, and social responsibility--was administered to 233 …

Expressed Emotion And Child Disturbance: An Investigation Of Parent And Family Functioning., Jodi G. Kershner Jan 1991

Expressed Emotion And Child Disturbance: An Investigation Of Parent And Family Functioning., Jodi G. Kershner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The expressed emotion index is a measure of emotional attitudes that is thought to reflect the affective quality of the home environment. Studies have consistently shown that a high level of expressed emotion (i.e., high levels of criticism and/or excessive emotional involvement) in caregivers is associated with poor clinical outcome in patients with schizophrenia, depression, and eating disorders. The present study examined the association between expressed emotion in parents and two other family risk factors known to contribute to child disturbance, psychological distress in parents and overall family dysfunction. The degree to which this set of risk factors predicted child …

The Utility Of The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales: Survey Form For Differentiating Between Mentally Retarded And Language Impaired Pre-School Age Children., Penelope A. Hope Jan 1991

The Utility Of The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales: Survey Form For Differentiating Between Mentally Retarded And Language Impaired Pre-School Age Children., Penelope A. Hope

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Analysis of Covariance with age as the covariate indicated significant differences between the groups on the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Composite (F (3,33) = 22.34, p $<$.0001). Post hoc analyses suggested significantly stronger (p $<$.001) overall adaptive skills for control and language impaired than for mentally retarded subjects. A three (group) by four (Vineland subdomain) MANCOVA with age as the covariate indicated a significant effect by group on the combined dependent variables (F (2,33) = 5.80, p $<$.0001). Univariate and post hoc comparisons indicated consistently weaker skills for mentally retarded subjects, although the socialization mean scores were not significantly different for the retarded and language impaired subjects. The language impaired subjects evidenced significantly weaker skills than did the controls on only one Vineland Domain: Communication. A discriminant function analysis was also employed. This analysis indicated that on the basis of the Vineland profile, 81.82% of the Mentally Retarded, 76.92% of the language impaired and 61.54% of the control group were correctly classified. Overall, results of this study suggest that the Vineland can differentiate between the language impaired and mentally retarded preschoolers. (Abstract shortened by UMI.) Processes Of Participation In Decision-Making: Self-Efficacy And Performance-Outcome Instrumentalities As Mediating Variables In Three Levels Of Employee Participation., James E. Cheston Jan 1991

Processes Of Participation In Decision-Making: Self-Efficacy And Performance-Outcome Instrumentalities As Mediating Variables In Three Levels Of Employee Participation., James E. Cheston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The potential of two variables, performance-outcome instrumentalities and self-efficacy, to mediate the relationships between employees' participation in decision making (PDM) and the outcomes of PDM, job satisfaction and work performance, were investigated within the framework of Dachler and Wilpert's (1978) conceptual model of participation. Sixty-two direct-care workers on eight residences in a large Provincial residential facility for developmentally delayed persons completed the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (Weiss, Dawis, England & Lofquist, 1967), two scales constructed for the present research to measure instrumentalities and self-efficacy, the Work Locus of Control Scale (Spector, 1988), and a perceived skill-utilization scale (Dowling & O'Brien, 1980). …

The Impact Of Perceptions Of Self And Others On Self-Reported Shyness., Todd. Jackson Jan 1991

The Impact Of Perceptions Of Self And Others On Self-Reported Shyness., Todd. Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the impact that perceptions of oneself and others have on shyness. Data were collected from 286 undergraduates who completed a questionnaire containing measures of shyness, expectations of rejection, desire for affiliation, 5 domains of interpersonal competence, self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism and interpersonal trust. Consistent with hypotheses, very shy subjects had higher expectations of rejection and similar levels of desire for affiliation compared to nonshy subjects; the relationships between shyness and these measures were also in the predicted direction. The very shy had significantly lower ratings on all interpersonal competence domains and the relationship between shyness and …

Neuropsychological Predictors Of Socioemotional Disturbance In Young Reading-Impaired Children., Maureen E. Wass Jan 1991

Neuropsychological Predictors Of Socioemotional Disturbance In Young Reading-Impaired Children., Maureen E. Wass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of the present investigation were to study the relationship between reading impairment and socioemotional functioning and to consider the predictive validity of neuropsychological tests of linguistic functioning for socioemotional subtype. The subjects consisted of 274 clinic-referred children. One group was defined as reading-impaired (on the basis of WRAT scores for Reading and Spelling), and the remaining children served as controls. Children in the reading-impaired group were found to comprise a significant proportion of the Normal socioemotional subtype, while no group differences were noted for the six subtypes identified. Neuropsychological linguistic measures of pure language functioning were found to …

Patterns Of Psychopathology In Sexually Abused Girls., Dianne Mary. Maing Jan 1991

Patterns Of Psychopathology In Sexually Abused Girls., Dianne Mary. Maing

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several domains of child functioning were examined in 20 sexually abused girls, aged 5-12 years, referred to a child protection agency. Twenty clinical and 20 non-clinical nonabused girls, group-matched on age, parents' marital and socioeconomic status, served as comparison groups. Standardized measures, such as the Child Behavior Checklist and Teacher Report Form, were used to assess, in the children, intelligence, academic achievement, behaviour problems, impulsivity, social competence, sexualized behaviour, gender identity disturbance, and activity level. Multiple informants were utilized for some measures. Multivariate and univariate analyses indicated that the sexually abused girls were more impaired in behavioural and cognitive/academic functioning …

The Process Of Adjustment Among Sojourning Foreign And Canadian Students., M. Jacqueline. Antonio Jan 1991

The Process Of Adjustment Among Sojourning Foreign And Canadian Students., M. Jacqueline. Antonio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first year adjustment of 28 international student sojourners was assessed and compared to that of 28 local Canadian students and 27 Canadian students who came from outside the immediate area to attend the University of Windsor. Participants completed a general research questionnaire (GRQ) to assess demographic background, academic and social support variables. They also self-reported current psychological distress, social difficulties and available coping resources. International students did not differ significantly from the Canadian students on symptomatic distress but did report greater social difficulty. The study also investigated the relationship between the psychosocial adjustment of international students and study variables. …

Sexuality And Body Image In Canadian University Students., Lisa. Keith Jan 1991

Sexuality And Body Image In Canadian University Students., Lisa. Keith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It was the purpose of the current study to examine the relationship between sexual experience and attitudes, and both perceptual and affective measures of body image in male and female noneating-disordered university students. Previous findings (Mable, 1985) were supported in that women tended to overestimate their body size, whereas men tended to underestimate their body size. Women and men differed significantly in their body image dissatisfaction, with women reporting greater dissatisfaction than men. With respect to university student sexuality, approximately 14% of women and 12% of men reported virgin status, which appears to be almost 20% lower than previous research …
