Canadian Youth Criminality And Identity Formation: A South Asian (Sikh) Perspective, Jaspreet S. Sidhu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the experiences of second generation Sikh males in Canada, focusing on involvement in criminal activities during adolescence. Using a deeply qualitative autoethnographic approach (Anderson, 2006), I conducted unstructured "active" interviews (Holstein & Gubrium, 1995) with seven males ranging from 20 to 26 years of age. In analyzing 300 news articles, this thesis explores the media's use of the protest paradigm, and theorizes the potential impact of citizen journalism on the mainstream media's constructions. This thesis also explores how media constructions used both text and images. The results of this study indicate that media constructions of protests change overtime and are occasionally receptive to new evidence; the media does not always …

Understanding The Rhetoric Used In The Discussion Of Gm Seeds And Biotechnology, Meghan Fraser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using qualitative methods this research uses Aristotelian theory as a framework to explore the rhetorical strategies used in the discussion and portrayal of biotechnology within Canada's seed industry. Using Aristotle's modes of persuasion (ethos, logos, and pathos) and his three types of rhetoric (deliberative, forensic, and epideictic) this research analyzed an example of each type of rhetoric. As an example of deliberative rhetoric this research analyzed a House of Commons debate on agricultural policy and biotechnology. The lawsuit between Monsanto and Percy Schmeiser was analyzed as an example of forensic rhetoric. Lastly, as an example of epidictic rhetoric, Monsanto's Canadian …
