Three-Dimensional Knapsack Problem With Pre-Placed Boxes And Vertical Stability, Hanan Mostaghimi Ghomi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A three-dimensional knapsack problem packs a subset of rectangular boxes inside a bin with fixed size such that the total value of packed boxes is maximized. Each box has its own value and size and can be freely rotated into any of the six positions while its edges are parallel to the bin's edges. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming is developed for the 3D knapsack problem, while some practical constraints such as vertical stability are considered. However, the given model can be applied to two dimensional problems as well. The proposed solution methodology is based on the sequence triple. Simulated …

Designing And Implementing A Hospital Environmental Management Framework, Taylor Purdy Aug 2013

Designing And Implementing A Hospital Environmental Management Framework, Taylor Purdy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern Canadian hospitals are large generators of landfilled waste. However, much of the waste disposed of by hospitals is divertible. A Hospital Environmental Management Framework (HEMF) was designed and implemented in a local hospital in an effort to control the organization's landfilled waste and improve environmental performance. Environmental issues are gaining awareness among businesses in other sectors, but are not commonly addressed in hospitals, where patient care takes priority over the environment. While specific, recommended waste reduction initiatives tailored to hospital operations have been widely published, information on how to implement these initiatives is lacking. The results from this research …

Role Of Spy1 In Hematopoiesis: Implications For Blood Malignancies, Kaitlyn N. Matthews Jan 2013

Role Of Spy1 In Hematopoiesis: Implications For Blood Malignancies, Kaitlyn N. Matthews

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In blood malignancies, the balance of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) self-renewal and differentiation is disturbed such that HSCs produce abnormal cells with an increased capacity to proliferate; however, the exact causes of this imbalance are not known. SpeedyA1 (Spy1) is a positive cell cycle regulator known to enhance cellular proliferation by direct binding and activation of Cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) Cdk2 and by promoting degradation of the Cdk inhibitor (CKI) p27 Kip1 . I demonstrate that Spy1 expression levels are elevated in early stem and progenitor cells during hematopoiesis, but that Spy1 may also be implicated in later stages of myeloid …

Characterization Of Scf Ubiquitin-Ligase Subunits In Arabidopsis, Mohammad Haj Dezfulian Jan 2013

Characterization Of Scf Ubiquitin-Ligase Subunits In Arabidopsis, Mohammad Haj Dezfulian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Arabidopsis thaliana genome encodes several families of polypeptides that are known or predicted to participate in the formation of the SCF-class of E3-ubiquitin ligase complexes. One such gene family encodes the Skp1-like class of polypeptide subunits, where 21 genes have been identified and are known to be expressed in Arabidopsis. The complexity of this family of Arabidopsis Skp1-like--or ASK --genes, together with the close structural similarity among its members, raises the prospect of significant functional redundancy among select paralogs. We have assessed the potential for functional redundancy within the ASK gene family by analyzing an expanded set of criteria …

In this dissertation, we study the asymptotic properties of pretest and shrinkage estimators of the large-scale effect in some spatial regression models, and compare their relative performance with respect to the classical maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) analytically and numerically through Monte Carlo experiments and real data examples. The shrinkage estimators were also numerically compared with three penalty estimators, namely, the LASSO, adaptive LASSO, and the SCAD penalty functions. A linear model with conditional autoregressive errors was studied in Chapter 2. The asymptotic properties of the shrinkage estimators, under local alternatives, were established, including the derivations of the asymptotic distributional bias, …

Automated Classification Of Medical Percussion Signals For The Diagnosis Of Pulmonary Injuries, Bhuiyan Md Moinuddin Jan 2013

Automated Classification Of Medical Percussion Signals For The Diagnosis Of Pulmonary Injuries, Bhuiyan Md Moinuddin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Used for centuries in the clinical practice, audible percussion is a method of eliciting sounds by areas of the human body either by finger tips or by a percussion hammer. Despite its advantages, pulmonary diagnostics by percussion is still highly subjective, depends on the physician's skills, and requires quiet surroundings. Automation of this well-established technique could help amplify its existing merits while removing the above drawbacks. In this study, an attempt is made to automatically decompose clinical percussion signals into a sum of Exponentially Damped Sinusoids (EDS) using Matrix Pencil Method, which in this case form a more natural basis …

Minimization Of Electrical Losses In A Vector Controlled Induction Machine Drive, Debarshi Biswas Jan 2013

Cooperative Functions Of Duetting Behaviour In Tropical Wrens, Kristin Ashley Kovach Jan 2013

Cooperative Functions Of Duetting Behaviour In Tropical Wrens, Kristin Ashley Kovach

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vocal duets occur when two breeding partners coordinate their songs into a joint display. Duetting serves functions both within and between pairs, and functionality is often context dependent. I explore the function of temporal coordination of male and female songs into duets, testing the hypothesis that coordinated duets are more threatening territorial signals than poorly coordinated duets or solos in three closely related species of wren. Results indicate that birds respond with similar levels of physical aggression to all three levels of coordination; however, they sing more duets in response to both categories of duets. I also explore duets and …

Bell Hooks On Critical Thinking: The Successes And Limitations Of Practical Wisdom, Jamie Sewell Jan 2013

Bell Hooks On Critical Thinking: The Successes And Limitations Of Practical Wisdom, Jamie Sewell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bell hooks' work on pedagogy covers a great deal of material in very broad strokes. She relies on the work of John Dewey and Paolo Freire, often drawing upon their critiques of traditional educational models to criticize the values she claims drive current models of education. When hooks addresses critical thinking explicitly, she reorients critical thinking toward practical aims, specifically democratic social progress. In order to better understand the potential value of her approach, and the relationship between critical thinking and democracy, I attempt to situate her conception of critical thinking as practical wisdom within current philosophical scholarship on critical …
